  • Review: "Poolside" - Falky

Falky’s latest track, “Poolside” is out of this world! This thrilling song explores the escapades of an ordinary guy who finds himself traveling with an ultra-wealthy woman for the fun of it. The song plays like a story wherein the protagonist abandons his normal life to be entertained by this surreal experience. Many of the lyrics of “Poolside” such as “I don’t know if it’s real or not so pour us up another shot” reveal a confusion between reality and fantasy. As a result, this light-hearted track emphasizes the excitement which living for thrills can involve, even if it’s only for a short amount of time. Not only are the lyrics of “Poolside” so much fun, but they also allow the listener to temporarily immerse themselves in a world where their usual rules don't apply. The vocals on “Poolside” are also quite light-hearted and fun, and they make a perfect match to the laid-back nature of the song. Rufus and Noah’s layered voices add great texture to the music; and the overall production quality is one of the most impressive aspects of “Poolside.” Falky has managed to encapsulate the feeling of carefree dancing within this track while its tone and mood are an impressive reminder of dance music legends Earth, Wind & Fire . What Falky does uniquely is blend this 70’s style dance music with their own eccentric music-making abilities. With a larger than life lyrical storyline to match, “Poolside” is infectious, ambitious, and clearly a passionate collaboration between two talented individuals. The story of musical duo of Falky begins in 2021 when members Rufus Mullhaupt and Noah Falk released their debut single “Dumb out of Luck.” With no specific sound or genre to pin them down, they have a significant plan to release new music every month of 2024 with no signs of slowing down. Intriguingly, these singer-songwriters have extremely different musical origin stories, with Rufus growing up in a household filled with instruments, and Noah with no familial musical background other than the sounds of the car radio. Together, Noah and Rufus now sport over 2,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, and they intend to keep paving their path towards notoriety with Falky’s eccentric sound. • Review: "Dead End Of A Dream" - MICHA

A breakup is the worst kind of heartache. In saying goodbye to a part of your soul and a version of yourself, you reflect on the ruins of your heart and try to understand your new reality. MICHA’s new song “Dead End of A Dream” is a raw message to a former partner, before the stage of letting go. In the first verse, he reveals that his feelings about their relationship haven’t gone away yet. The narrator feels deceived by his ex for having planted false hopes about their relationship. As the chorus builds, listeners witness the heart-wrenching remorse the singer feels, with the words “just give me back the heartbeats and the hours”. This visceral phrase connects time to the very thing that keeps us alive, alluding to the ex-partner being ingrained in the singer’s reason for living. The chorus concludes with a harrowing message: “you promised there was no way the love we had was ever gonna be the dead end of a dream.” It's a beautiful and tortured reminder, fuelled by the sting the narrator feels. A soulful melancholy mood comes from the melodic humming and a flowing acoustic picking pattern in a minor key as the song’s introduction. MICHA’s low, gravelly, and soulful vocals start simply. The depth of his voice brings a stimulating contrast to the gentle instrumentals. Only at the end of the verse does the melody in his vocals climb to showcase his bold range. A slight country influence to his sound, MICHA belts the chorus, with emotional texture and force. The sound of an acoustic guitar joins in with powerful strumming and a percussive pulse on each new bar. The last line of the chorus is echoed in background vocals, fading away. A soft electronic whooshing sound brings in the next verse, and vocals in the background harmonize. The instrumentals cut out entirely for the bridge as the melancholy humming from the song’s introduction plays gently. The vocals are belting with what feels like the force of a broken heart. The final chorus starts without the instrumentals, much quieter than before, until it breaks out with the same force until the end of the song. MICHA is a musician from the Netherlands whose solo music is new to the scene, with “Dead End of A Dream” being one of six releases on his debut EP of the same name. He engages with fans through social media, even hosting a contest for a living room concert. Recently, MICHA tried his hand at modelling for a collection called “Once Upon a Town” by Jasper Abels . He is part of Micah & Julia , a duo that released music between 2020 and 2022. He toured the Netherlands in 2023, performing in ten different cities. You can follow his music career on the links below, and enjoy his soulful voice as you listen to his songs. • Review: "Mess Around" - Daisy Gill

In the vein of her title debut EP, "It's Not You, It's Them," Daisy Gill is back with her new single about the trials and tribulations of modern love. "Mess Around" is a fun synthy jam about not knowing where you stand in a situationship. The track is as shamelessly relatable as it is endlessly catchy. Daisy's signature "retro pop" sound is as welcomingly present as ever. "Mess Around" blends in the funky disco aesthetics of old with modern productions that still sound fresh. It is a truly timeless pop cut. With "Mess Around," Daisy Gill proves herself to be a certified hitmaker. Daisy has an innate ability to exude confidence, and "Mess Around" is no exception. With her robust voice and lower registry, Daisy commands attention. She knows her partner is going around with others and will not have it. The sticky refrain "You're acting like, acting like, I don't know, you're running around" works not only because of its insane catchiness but also because of Daisy's performance. The singer states the track is based on her real experiences, and it shows. The song is equally savage as it is honest about her hurt, and she sings with such conviction that it expresses both. Daisy emotes complex feelings with ease. With a powerhouse vocal performance and an irresistible disco groove, "Mess Around" is pop perfection. Daisy Gill is a singer-songwriter from Liverpool, UK. She began officially releasing music in 2018 and has seen exponential career growth ever since. In 2023, the artist auditioned for The Voice UK, where she received the rare 4-chair spin with her rendition of " In the Name of Love ," which landed her on Tom Jones' team. • Review: "dreamer" - Maria Shockey

This song, “dreamer” by Maria Shockey, is an upbeat indie-pop song all about trying to push through when life is turning out a little bit more difficult than you expected. Written after a year-long hiatus from the music industry, Maria Shockey wanted this song to capture that feeling of knowing you’re meant for more than you are now, but not quite knowing if you’re ever going to get there. With lyrics like “But I was a dreamer in the way you just know how to breathe,” and “If I’m not a dreamer, I don’t know, I don’t know who I’d be,” she pins down exactly what it’s like to always be aspiring for something you can’t reach, and that crisis when you try to figure out where that leaves you now. Click here to listen to "dreamer"! “Dreamer” is an upbeat song that is sonically reminiscent of artists like Valley, Gatlin, and Nightly. Starting off slower and more on the somber side, you’re drawn into the song carefully and subtly. The tension starts rising around 45 seconds through the nearly 4 minutes, and then the beat really picks up at the minute mark. The chorus is energetic with heavy percussion, making you bop your head and tap your foot. Maria Shockey’s strong vocals are able to keep up with the powerful instrumentation, creating depth to the melody. An almost retro sounding guitar solo breaks into the mix at the three minute mark, breaking up the established rhythm and adding interest. Overall, this song is perfect for someone who loves strong indie-pop songs that balance emotional messages with fun and dance-worthy tracks. Maria Shockey is an up-and-coming singer/songwriter who’s made a name for herself in the indie-pop genre. Taking inspiration from artists like Valley, Gracie Abrams, and Taylor Swift, she’s learned from their lyricism and production and created her own unique sound. Struggling through the difficulties of the music industry, Maria Shockey finds a lot of her influence from her own life, making her both relatable and someone to look up to. She released her first single, “You Don’t Get to Know,” in 2019, followed by other singles and a full length album, Composure, in 2022. “Dreamer” marks her latest release. A person's bloodstream is the most integral part of their being. It passes oxygen through the brain, allows the heart to beat, and helps the body fight off infections that could cause it harm. • Review: "Dead of Night" - Anna Curreen

In the newly released "Dead of Night", Anna Curreen captures the many uncertainties , hopeless stares at the ceiling, and  late-night questions that flood our heads whenever romance is involved. Curreen sings of that vulnerable moment when love meets anxiety and we can't help but lie awake and wonder where things went wrong. Despite its heavy subject, "Dead of Night" is compelling, not only throwing the listener into a pool of unresolved feelings and nonexistent closure but also reassuring them that they aren't struggling alone. When someone begins to gradually distance themselves over time, one is left battling the grief caused by the emotionally unavailable partner, and Curreen masterfully translates our helplessness into song in her attempts to not let these feelings consume her. "Dead of Night" confronts the uncomfortable as we try to make peace with the present all while reminiscing about the past. The first sound that enters our ears is a smooth instrumental with a strong R&B vibe; it's laid-back, but just angsty enough to evoke those feelings of romantic distress and set the tone for the rest of the song. The periodic snaps in the background, along with the slow, steady pace are paired with passionate lyrics that have us anticipating the chorus. Curreen's clean tone has an underlying sense of heartache, and as she pours her soul into the song, she manages to convey the dilemma of having loved and cared for someone. Throughout the song, she vocalizes and riffs softly, creating an emotional feeling with a profound impact, as words aren't always needed to make us feel and understand a song's meaning. Anna Curreen's "Dead of Night", in all of its ethereal harmonies and graceful charm, does a beautiful job of capturing the tension, complexity, and chaos of momentary romance. Anna Curreen is a rising pop artist from the U.S., finding her niche in a unique mix of R&B and traditional pop. First releasing songs back in 2020, Curreen has since expanded her discography with popular additions like "Compassion" and "Not Jealous" that have reached a combined number of nearly 40k streams! Curreen is best known for her vulnerable lyrics and emotive deliveries, both showing off her beautiful voice and talent when it comes to writing meaningfully authentic lyrics. Fans from all over are excited to see the direction she takes in the near future, producing more sentimental songs to stick in our heads! As always, stay updated and follow the socials below! • Review: "Internet Star" - googly eyes

Discover an exciting and refreshing electronic landscape with “Internet Star” from googly eyes. The song is a kaleidoscope, displaying a wide range of differing qualities and bends in genre. The introduction leans heavily into an all-encompassing electronic sound, amplifying the voice of googly eyes in an ear-catching way that you don’t anticipate. Following this point, you’re made to focus, almost solely, on the melodic and calming voice of Internet Star. Her voice melds almost seemingly symbiotically with the sounds of the backing string instruments, working together in harmony, and additionally shares a similar relationship with a multitude of electronically produced, ear-striking, qualities. The overall sound to “Internet Star” sets googly eyes apart from other artists who incorporate details of different genres such as, in this scenario, electronic and pop. What googly eyes incorporates into this sound feels both personal and familiar, in a comforting way – something very difficult for musicians to find a proper balance between. While listening to “Internet Star”, I found myself relating to googly eyes’ perspective without previously being fully aware of how I feel about the subject matter of the song. “Internet Star” details how difficult it is to be an artist, and want to create, but feel the power of the internet and the sensation of going viral take over the creativity process. In doing so, this leads to confusion of what success and your dreams mean. Although I’m not a musician, I experienced strong feelings of resonation with both the lyrics to “Internet Star” and the confusion & passion googly eyes exemplifies in this track. The depth and exploration of art, the digital age, and personal growth discussed in “Internet Star” is something I respect, as well as something that more people should become immersed in. It’s refreshing, as well as healing and fun, to interact with music such as “Internet Star” that connects personal struggles, relatable issues, modern qualities, and well-crafted musicality altogether. It’s apparent that googly eyes has created a world of her own, yet its inviting and a safe place for all. googly eyes is an artist, writer, and producer from Houston, Texas. She recently became the first artist signed to Pretty Swede Records, an independent music label founded by artist Tove Lo. Since the music label’s foundation in 2022, googly eyes’ upcoming EP, Starlet , will be Pretty Swede’s first release apart from the work of Tove Lo. googly eyes’ focus in her music is on electronic influences, vocal production, and poetic lyricism. She aims to create vivid soundscapes with qualities of raw & natural, human elements along with ones of synthetic and manufactured traits. Bareback on the Motherfucking Plains , the first single from googly eyes, was recorded and produced in its entirety by googly eyes. With the upcoming release of the EP Starlet  on September 27th, I cannot wait to see what this new age of art brings to googly eyes and creative, all-around music lovers. • Review: "Like a Dog" - Natalie Barth

Having deep feelings for someone can be the most beautiful thing as well as the most exhausting thing. Driving yourself crazy imagining the life that could be instead of reality. Natalie Barths new song “Like a Dog,” portrays what it's like to love someone you can’t have and the restlessness that comes with it. She brings a mix of dog and religious metaphors to describe the longing she felt when writing this. With the religious metaphors, Natalie and her producer Michael Leto, played that into the track with the angelic layered vocals and the gospel touch on the instrumentation. This track falls into the alt-pop-rock genre which is a personal favorite of mine. If you’re a fan of artists like Olivia Rodrigo, Nessa Barrett or Sabrina Carpenter, this is a song you need to check out. Natalie wrote “Like a Dog” a few months back and brought it to Michael immediately. In her words, “The song is about yearning for someone to the point of exhaustion - when you miss them so much but you know you can’t have them - and the desperation that comes with that feeling.” I think she perfectly portrayed that and it all came from her vulnerability in the lyrics. “I haven’t seen in color since you left,” is one of my favorite lines because her use of imagery to express her desolation makes the message even more impactful. She used this song to tell this person all of the things she would do to have them, which led to her hook line “I’ll let you walk me like a dog.” Natalies tones and harmonies add a level of emotion that causes listeners to sympathize and relate. We have all had moments where we would do anything for that one person to love us, “Like a Dog” turns that intensity into words. Natalie Barth is a singer-songwriter from North Carolina. She has spent years writing and working on her craft, but just recently found the confidence to share her art. Music is a way for her to cope, as she takes negative experiences and works through them with her lyrics. Natalie finds passion in taking raw emotions and turning them into sorrowful lyrics over indie pop tracks. Her goal is to be truthful with what she writes in hopes her listeners relate. Music is a powerful healing tool and Natalie does it in such a beautiful way with her work. She has a handful of singles and her album “The Golden Years” to hold us over until her next release. • Review: "Subtlety Is Nothing" - Janna Jamison

In the beginning stages of liking somebody– the slightest bit of interest they show tells us their true feelings for us. It's what feeds the connection, it’s what sharpens the flutter in our hearts, how the simplest things can turn into utter bliss. However, after quite some time with no momentum flowing between this person, it can get quite old fairly quickly. At some point, we crave more than subtle gestures, we want this person to voice their thoughts to us, and tell us how they truly feel rather than relying on unpretentious hints that we must then decipher and figure out whether or not there is still that spark of interest, or if it will slowly fade out into nothing. “Subtlety is Nothing” by Janna Jamison depicts a similar scenario in the form of a catchy tune– it tells the story of wanting. A yearning for this person of interest to voice their true intentions, to put an awaited demise to the subtlety, and finally make something out of their apparent connection. “We need to say something, ‘cause subtlety is nothing” Janna sings– expressing her longing to move forward, into the next stages of their relationship. “Subtlety is Nothing” perfumes the air with hints of both heartache and yearning, a sound similar to alternative and pop rock. The strings of the electric guitar give it the added edge the song needs to create something that is, not only catchy, but is also sure to leave an impact by voicing its potent presence with a powerful sound that is refreshing to its listeners. Janna’s voice seems to just course through the strings of the instruments perfectly, acting as her own instrument throughout the song. It adds emotion and smolders of passion the song needs in order to deliver the message the lyrics are trying to portray. As someone who has encountered a similar situation depicted in the song, it’s almost frustrating when this person of interest is doing practically nothing to move things forward. I think Janna captures the frustration and wanting so incredibly well. Not only is it frustration, but it’s that yearning  that keeps us so enticed. Janna Jamison is an American singer and songwriter who mostly resonates with genres like pop, indie pop, and pop rock. Janna seems to have been singing since the early year of 2020, and like any other artist with a fiery passion for music, Janna would sporadically post videos and photos of herself singing and playing with her instruments. “Subtlety Is Nothing” was the first single released before her first EP titled “Lovesuite”. In which Janna touches up on topics that involve the growth period of shifting from girlhood, and into womanhood through love, lust, heartbreak, and infatuation. Each song included in this EP progresses throughout the journey of Janna’s itinerary through growth. Currently, Janna and her band are touring through the Eastcoast of the United States, playing in places like Chicago and New York, where they had their last show on August 25th, wrapping up the era of her EP “Lovesuite” in a bittersweet ending. It’s so clear that Janna has an immense passion for singing and performing on stage. As Janna continues to make music and sing her heart out, I can’t help but look forward to hearing more of her work! • Review: "House in My Memory" - Cami Walsh

Artist Cami Walsh releases her hauntingly beautiful and brilliant acoustic single, “House in My Memory.” A cathartic yet immersive listen, the track is metaphorically symbolic. Walsh describes building a house in her memory for her and her past partner whom she longs to be reunited. The image of this house is donned with haunting pictures and pieces of Walsh's past relationship, paying homage to the memories that the pair once shared as well as signifying hope of the pair reuniting and sharing their love again. “Your picture hangs in frames on every wall,” Walsh sings, “All your clothes still hang in the closet.” Walsh seems to be trapped in her memories, as she creates a perfect house for the pair to stay, though she alludes to her partner no longer sharing the same feelings. “I know I only reside in your periphery / I doubt you saved a space for me at all,” she writes. Still, Walsh somberly notes that she will move in instead since she holds no hope for her heart to move on. Melodically melancholic and reminiscent, “House in My Memory,” is a sweeping acoustic dream of nostalgia wrapped in an indie framework. Guitar strums are softened alongside Walsh’s tender and gentle voice, as if Walsh is beckoning her lover to come back home, back to their warm moments. A deep longing and sadness are found embedded in each note of the song, the melody poignant and moving. The single holds a transfixed quality, with its evocative nature displayed most powerfully through Walsh's somber voice and earnestly heartfelt lyrics. The ending chorus is accompanied by violin strings, an effect that ends the song further on a sorrow-filled note. As if cementing the pain forever and the memories that will always stay with the singer. “House in My Memory,” becomes a beautifully painful introspection of love and loss, and the memories that continue to haunt us far after the person is gone. “House in My Memory” is the last installment within Cami Walsh’s EP alongside tracks “My Name” and “Biggest Regret.” Another set of acoustic gems, Walsh’s EP is raw and expressive, organic and bittersweet with its simple tunes and Walsh’s honest lyrics. Described as a "bookend" to her other songs, “House in My Memory,” serves as a closure to Walsh's past relationship. While constructing the EP, Walsh wanted an earthy and authentic sound, as she opted for a more immersive music environment instead of traditional studios as we see her Chicago roots and Nashville influences shine through her music. The singer-songwriter became a viral hit when covering most notably an Evann McIntosh track that led her to collaborate with producer Jesty Beatz. The collaboration resulted in her singles spotlighting on several Spotify editorial playlists. Her covers were also shared on social media by artists like Still Woozy, Willow Smith, Lennon, and Maisy Stella. Known for her authentic sound and songwriting, Cami Walsh is a breath of fresh air in the music industry, creating music that beautifully captures the aches and pains of life. • Review: “Your World” - PEPTALK x Montaigne

If you have ever experienced a one-sided romance, you can understand how exhausting it can be trying to get through to someone who doesn’t return your feelings. “Your World” is a new collaboration piece by artists PEPTALK and Montaigne. It explores themes of frustration and the pointlessness of trying to please someone in a one-sided relationship. I think this song not only had some pretty straightforward lyrics; I feel like I could resonate with many of them. The chorus in particular I think was very well written. It’s short, but gets the point across pretty well. Despite the message behind the song, “Your World” had an incredibly upbeat and energetic sound. The song opens with a retro, and almost video game-inspired sound. I think this song shares a lot of similarities to artists such as Chappell Roan , MUNA , and Remi Wolf , particularly in its energetic vibe. I want to talk a bit more about these lyrics. I think they pair extremely well with the instrumentals for this song. In particular, one lyric I loved was just before the first chorus, at the start of the song. “I want to do my best to be who I am / While you were on a quest to not give a damn”. As I said before, “Your World” is a collaboration piece with PEPTALK and Montaigne. A few members of PEPTALK were chosen to participate in Troye Sivan’s pride writing camp. That’s where they met Montaigne. Thus, the partnership for this collaboration was born. PEPTALK is a group made up of all women. They first began releasing music back in 2022, with their debut hit, “White Sneakers”. Currently, they get around 46,000 monthly streams on Spotify. Montaigne is a Grammy-nominated and ARIA-winning artist who first began releasing music 10 years ago, back in 2014. They haven’t released any music aside from “Your World” since 2022, but they are currently slated to go on tour with The Script and the Ambassadors. This song was super fun to listen to, and I’m excited to hear what both artists release next. Go and stream “Your World” everywhere today!
