The story behind “We Are Not Machines” comes from Jupiter Winter’s brainchild, Lelia Broussard. Although the song draws you in with its pop complexion, its timing and purpose goes far beyond the sole discussion of human emotion and how it impacts us all. Broussard wrote “We Are Not Machines” in 2020 after the global outbreak of COVID-19, detailing all-around struggles felt at this time and discussion of a foundation for hope. Many elements, such as Broussard’s mixed vocal range and the level of relatability the lyrics offer, draw me to artists like Phoebe Bridgers and The Japanese House. Although on the other hand, aspects like the mix of supporting electronic instruments brings my mind to artists like Bleachers and Clairo. With the level of complexity put into this song, along with the quality in its sound, Jupiter Winter’s sophisticated pop transcends barriers put up against some areas of the pop scene today. While some areas of differing music genres are stuck in a rut, where the audience is left with no real connection to the music, this bite of indie-pop not only connects you to the piece but gives you something of substance and quality to listen to. I’ve noticed that I sometimes catch myself waiting for the “good parts” / more interesting pieces of songs to start playing, instead of just embracing what detail I’m given in the moment. With “We Are Not Machines”, it’s obvious that there is an attention to detail given here that translates throughout the song, rather than care being shown in varying, specific areas in the track. Jupiter Winter is the LA-based artist led by Lelia Broussard and Royce Whittaker, her creative partner and husband. Broussard is a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and seasoned artist. In 2015, after Whittaker decided to relocate from Canada and join Broussard in California, they transformed their home studio into the space that would propel Jupiter Winter forward. While the lyrics are graphically detailed, using words like “slaughtered” and phrases such as, “land of the free chained to the ground,” it is necessary and paints a relatable, accurate picture. Pop music is a multiplex system, yet it’s universal, and songwriting like Kushner’s has qualities that have the power to bring people together and relate to one another. Maybe it was you that was hurt, or the other person, or perhaps even both of you, but either way this track hits the nail on the head when describing the emotions you’d feel the moment that relationship ends and you’re left with your thoughts and consequences for your (or their) actions. Filled with passionate vocals and a soundscape that pulses with energy, “I Think I Learned My Lesson” is almost like a fable; it tells you both a story and a lesson learned, and hopefully makes you feel as if you’ve learned one, too. If there’s anything “I Think I Learned My Lesson” has, it is intense and powerful instrumentals. While the song begins fairly understated in the beginning, with a slight synth drone in the background and Taylor’s vocals atop of it, you’ll quickly find that the percussion comes in strong during the chorus. With each pulsing drum beat, you feel the punch behind every lyric, and can really feel the emotion in the words. This is one of those songs that has a beautiful balance between instrumentals and vocals which measure out the meaning of its lyrics with well-timed beats to support the overall composition. But no song is complete without its songwriting, and “I Think I Learned My Lesson” has it in spades; each verse is a small glimpse into the narrator’s relationship, and their thoughts after its fateful end. I love how the song has a slightly introspective angle to it, but is more on the side of regret. The chorus is especially compelling as it discusses the hatred the narrator feels toward themselves when they act out and are now faced with the consequences of those actions. These actions, too, are unintentional, described as "weapons" in the lyrics as the narrator has become accustomed to picking fights in relationships. Complex and layered, “I Think I Learned My Lesson” has both songwriting and a soundscape that support one another, creating a wonderfully intricate track that is a fantastic listen. Even on the first listen, I knew that this song was something special. St. Lundi’s voice paired with these lyrics and the music just fills the listener with such good vibes. I found myself singing along by the time the second chorus rolled around. The way St. Lundi’s voice navigates the lyrics is a true work of art. “If you love someone, go ahead and say so.” The ever-present reminder that life, although precious and exciting at times, is also fleeting. We live, we love, we lose, we win, we struggle, we succeed, and we, ultimately, die. One of the most heartbreaking aspects of life is losing a loved one. It forces you to ponder who you are without that person, how you’re expected to carry on with life without them there, guiding you, supporting you, making you laugh, cry, feel alive. St. Lundi writes of the inner turmoil surrounding living, loving, losing, and finding the innate ability to carry on. This song in particular makes me think of my relationship with him because of St. Lundi’s explanation for the song and how his relationship with his father was strained for years. My relationship with my grandfather was anything but perfect throughout my life, but he was still a constant in my life, especially in my younger years. It was only after his death that I realized how big an impact he’d had on my life. He was my only father figure, so he doubled as my granddad and stand-in dad. I did, however, let him know in no uncertain terms that I loved him before he left this earth and I’m so grateful that we were able to mend our relationship before he passed. It’s always so wonderful when a song can evoke such strong emotions from deep within your soul, I’ve no doubt that St. Lundi and his team put a lot of work into developing this song. Everything is pieced together perfectly, the instruments, the lyrics, the vocals that soften on the most intricate parts of the song. A masterpiece in every sense of the word, it helps the listener go ahead and have a good cry and appreciate the important people in their lives.
