I don’t listen to a lot of EDM or dance pop music, but after listening to this song, I have to say I really like it now! “Somebody To You” is a collaboration piece from musicians CVBZ, Anna Clendening, and teamwork. It’s a song filled with energy-pumping instrumentals, killer vocals, and addictive energy. The song is about feeling insignificant or unimportant in a relationship, and how these complexities could affect one’s self-worth. I think this song is super fun to listen to, and I can easily envision this being played at some kind of rave or music festival. I also love getting to hear collab songs, because it allows me to get to know other artists on one shared song. And in this single, I got to know three! Like I stated before, I don’t listen to a lot of EDM or dance pop. So, when I get a chance to do so, I know I’m going to have a blast listening! I put the song on my speaker and just had a fun time. I tend to judge how much I like dance pop based on how much dancing I actually do. And let me just say, I danced… a lot. What I love about music like this is how much production matters in the end. The technology used to create instrumentals that you hear in songs like “Somebody To You” gives me a lot of genuine respect for music producers and musical artists. CVBZ is a Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, and producer who has been releasing music since 2016. He has collaborated with and written for icons like The Chainsmokers and Fetty Wap, and even got to perform on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Anna Clendening first gained popularity on Vine, but later captured the hearts of many more when she was a contestant on Season 9 of America’s Got Talent!  She gets an impressive 1 million monthly streams, with her debut EP, waves , releasing back in 2019. Many of us have experienced having a forbidden crush — a situation where emotions develop for a friend, but pursuing them would complicate things, such as either not wanting to ruin the friendship, or that this person is already in a relationship. Kristina Rossi’s latest track, “ Off Limits ,” dives into this narrative. It follows Kristina realizing that her friend, who’s in a relationship of 2 years, has an attraction towards her, and has been splitting her time between Kristina and her boyfriend. Recognizing how unfair this is towards that relationship, Kristina maintains respect for them, and commits to distancing herself. However, it seems to be that the feelings are mutual! Well, this wasn’t a plot twist that I was expecting. Initially, this track kicked off with it seeming like Kristina was critiquing her friend for attempting to pursue her despite being in a committed relationship: “ I’m not gonna lie, it doesn’t seem fair. Does he even know?" However, it soon transformed into the beginning of an interesting confession from Kristina: “ I keep you off limits while you’re still with him .” This verse definitely caught me so off guard that I had to restart the song to make sure I understood that correctly. The surprise doesn’t stop there though! Kristina continues and dives deeper into her suppressed emotions, stating that she's been, “ Overthinking the most. About us, you and I. I can look but won't touch, just keep you on my mind. Every time that we talk I wanna hold you tight, but I keep it all inside .” Although the feeling is mutual, Kristina maintains respect for her friends' relationship, choosing to back off rather than jeopardize it. She tells herself that this friend is off limits  and definitely out of reach, which makes this a forbidden crush situation. Other than the fun and shocking emotional rollercoaster I’ve just experienced, I also enjoyed how this song evokes the sensation of a journey with pretty melodies, a calm tempo and ambiance that creates an experience that's similar to being alone in your room, lost in the thoughts of thinking about someone you like while staring at the ceiling. Sophia Alexa just dropped her brand new single “Losing by a Landslide!” It’s a folk-pop track that delves into the insecurities created by societal expectations for young adults. As an adult, she feels inadequate compared to the standards set up for her. She starts off the song by painting a late night scene in her room, the street lights burning through her windows. She “sick into [her] stomach/holding conversations with the moon.” She mindlessly scrolls on the internet, searching for a distraction. As the night progresses on, she starts to believe every lie she’s been told about her 20s. Sophia says she’s left in a “20 something drought” and can hear the voices telling her all the things she should and shouldn’t be. She says “I’ve been losing by a landslide now,” and is scared of feeling like she’s missing out on her life. In this illusion she describes as a “reckless game,” she feels like “[she’s] lying down in [her] fate” and feels perpetually stuck in this game. She dives more into this insecurity of missing out, saying she’s missing on friends and “occasions to [her] detriment.” This is a pattern in her life, but she still is “asking how it happens everytime” After repeating the pre-chorus and chorus again, she describes the feeling of trailing back home, “when all of a sudden/I lose all control,” but yet, she finds comfort in sadness. The production on “Losing by a Landslide” is pure bliss. With a folksy mandolin in the introduction and delicate, airy vocals from Sophia, it’s a calming yet exciting track. Despite the lyrics taking on a sadder tone, but because of the production, I imagine myself listening to this song while going on a late night beach walk in the summer. Sophia does something interesting with the double tracking of her voice. Double tracking is a technique created by recording two or more vocal lines to match each performance as close as possible to give the vocals depth or richness. Sophia, on the other hand, doesn’t completely replicate her original vocal line perfectly, which adds this interesting characteristic to the vocals that wouldn’t have been there. The verses stay pretty folk-pop, while the introduction of some drums in the choruses give the track a more pop edge. As a whole, the track is reminiscent of 70s folk and soft rock tracks from the greats like Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan. One thing I really like about the track is that the production sounds live. In the age of electronic instruments, live instrumentation is so refreshing to hear in mainstream music. Overall, “Losing by a Landslide” is a carefully crafted folk-pop track with 70s-inspired flairs that make a truly innovative song. Sophia is a singer-songwriter born in California but raised in New Amsterdam. However, she’s lived in London for over a decade. Constantly changing schools as a kid, she found herself feeling out of place and turned to music to be her constant in her life. She grew an affinity to artists like Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Stevie Nicks, and Neil Young, who have all had an influence on her sound, which is a fusion of modern music with a folk-pop flair. Heartbreak can leave us incapacitated. It can leave us implicitly impotent, succumbing to the interminable distress that weeps out from our perforated hearts. It takes a special kind of resilience to seek light out of such disconsolate heartache. Yet, when we take that first step to heal our deep wounds, we find that we may flourish even in the depths of a heartbreak that once seemed irremediable. We discover that the cavernous punctures in our hearts can heal even better than it was before. It’s a significant moment when we find just how empowering heartbreak can be, showing us that we can burgeon without the ones who caused such smarting pain. The song Symptoms by Laura Rizzotto does an incredible job of depicting heartbreak as such, it can be painful, but it can also be a time of healing. In the song, Laura illustrates a scene where she partakes in activities that destroy any recollections of her past love, singing about how she would be starting over, entirely wiping out any memories of her past love as though they had never even existed. This portrays how, although she was once wallowing in her affliction and suffering, she has now found it in her heart to heal herself from the utter bedlam her former lover left behind– making her heal even faster from such a daunting breakup. Anyone who has previously experienced such anguish can recognize these lyrics as a dagger to the heart, reminding us just how harrowing our past breakups were. Although the lyrics are partly morose, having the ability to remind anyone of any fallen relationship they may have faced, the song itself mixes in heartache with an added layer of a catchy melody, making it the perfect song to rediscover oneself and overcome such desolation. The staggering music video also adds another layer of skillful artwork to the song, how swiftly and effortlessly the singer motions her body, not just to the rhythm of the song, but with every efficacious lyric. I marvel at her inherent talent to move with such expression and emphasis– her emotions depicted throughout her expression and her emotive body. I couldn’t help but notice the way the mood changed once the singer mentioned her journey to recovering from her heartbreak, hinting at her triumph with the blend of trumpets that mingled in with the tune of the melodious guitar that once decorated the song with a crestfallen tune, mingling in with Laura’s exasperated, yet innately masterful singing voice. After listening to the song, I realized just how much I resonated with such an empowering message like the journey that follows a healed heartbreak. Such a debacle can be scarring, but in the end, I felt so empowered that I was able to crawl out of such pessimism. I was able to free myself from my despair, rejecting the morose colors that threatened to monopolize my life. Heartbreak allowed me to grow and find myself after losing myself in such a committed relationship where I tend to forget about myself and my own needs. Laura Rizzotto, the woman behind such an emotionally delicate song, is an award-winning singer and songwriter. Laura is a proudly Brazilian/Latvin singer and an evidently trained dancer who has worked professionally on music for more than ten years. She began her music career in the year 2010– when her inborn talents would take her to soaring heights. The band persevered, however, and gave their first live performance at London's The George. Videographer Lou Smith happened to attend the band's third live gig, filming the performance and sharing it on his YouTube channel, helping to skyrocket the band's popularity. With an eclectic sound that incorporates elements of art rock, baroque pop, indie rock, and folk music, there truly is something for everyone to enjoy. Track 1 - Prelude To Ecstasy While the debut album's instrumental title track is under two minutes in length, that does not diminish its impact by any means. Orchestral music ushers us in, slowly building in intensity and then gradually softening to intermingle with the delicate tones of a harp. The ominous tolling of church bells can also be heard, lending an air of mystery and intrigue. And, if listening closely, one may notice some melodic nods to the rest album's tracklist contained throughout the opening tune. Track 2 - Burn Alive Written by Abigail Morris, Burn Alive was the first track created by the band and has been the set opener ever since they started performing. Abigail wrote the song after the loss of her father, encapsulating those complex emotions within. The music begins with a dark, 80's goth vibe and a style that is reminiscent of Siouxie and the Banshees. The emotion conveyed via the vocal performance is tangible; you can feel its depth swallow you whole. 'I am not the girl I set out to be/Let me make my grief a commodity/Do what I can to survive/There is candle was melting in my veins/So I keep myself standing in your flames/Burn, burn me alive.' Track 3 - Caesar on a TV Screen The final release before the album's debut, this track is an absolute delight. It is chock-full of theatrical energy, creativity, and an eccentricity that takes you on a complete musical journey. Soft, alluring vocals and elegantly flowing music convey a dreamy quality before ramping up, transitioning to lively riffs and playful energy in the pre-chorus. But perhaps the song's biggest surprise is its chorus, which captures all the pomp and bombast of an exaggerated masculine swagger in song form. 'And just for a second, I could be one of the greats/I'll be Caesar on a TV screen, champion of my fate/No one can tell me to stop, I'll have everything I want, anyone/And everyone will like me then/Everyone will like me then.' Track 4 - The Feminine Urge This song explores the concept of being a woman, more specifically, feminine rage, the mother wound, and generationally shared traumas and experiences. More soft, dreamy music, with a dash of femme fatale thrown in for good measure, paired with beautiful vocals. The proverbial claws are unsheathed, and fangs bared as the song progresses, the vocal delivery, in particular, becoming more assertive, confident, cheeky, and defiant. 'Oh, ballerina, bend under the weight of it all/Ain't it fun to hold the world in your hands?/Do you feel like a man when I can't talk back?/Do you want me or do you want control?" Track 5 - On Your Side This track details the chronicles the lifecycle of a toxic relationship that is drawing to an end, a case where the fly begins the painstaking process of extricating itself from the spider's web. From the heights of passion and pleasure to the trenches of sorrow and despair, the feelings captured in the vocals make this song relatable to anyone who has had a similar experience. The shimmering keys, in particular, provide a gorgeous focal point that contrasts nicely against the pain of the lyrics. 'Back to the olive mount you lead me to/The wind was blinding so I clung to you/And you smiled so sweetly/As you threw me/Down to the rocks into the seaweed/You thought that I could fly.' Track 6 - Beautiful Boy Written about the experience of an attractive male friend, Abigail explains how this friend had lost his phone while hitchhiking solo through Spain, completing his journey thanks to the kindness of strangers met along the way. She reflects on her envy of his experience, knowing that if she were to attempt the same, the result would likely be quite different. The sweetly melancholic notes of the flute and the delicate notes of the keys provide a lovely backdrop for poignant vocals that feel achingly beautiful, developing an almost hymnal feel about midway through the song. 'The best a boy can ever be is pretty/He launches ships on which he sails to safety/And what I'm feeling isn't lust, it's envy/He has the Earth, makes love to her, to spite me.' Track 7 - Gjuha Translating to 'tongue' in Albanian, Aurora shares that this song describes her sorrow about not being as familiar with her mother tongue as she would like. Hailing from Kosovo, Aurora's family speaks Albanian, but having been raised in London, the keyboardist herself doesn't speak it so well. The result is a haunting, melancholy, and stunningly beautiful song that perfectly conveys her emotions despite any language barrier. 'Mund të marrë pak kohë/Kohë me folë shlirë' (It may take some time/Time to talk about it). Track 8 - Sinner The album's second release, this track is a journey of self-acceptance, a desire for one's past and present selves to integrate and fully become one. The featured video, directed by Balan Evans and the band, was shot in one take. Featuring lovely vocal harmonies, sparkling piano notes, and some truly excellent guitar work, this track continues in the same vein of avant-garde offerings, drawing musical inspiration from an array of genres and artists. '(Pray for me, on your knees) before the hillside turns to grey/Pray for me, kneel with me/Soak in the crystal stream/Wash the sin from your back/Cleanse my soul, make me whole/Dance in the morning glow/Hold me, we can't go back.' Track 9 - My Lady of Mercy The album's third release provides us with a heavier, darker atmosphere and imagery as it delves into the reconciliation of the conflict between one's sexual preferences and religious upbringing. With feelings of shame, excitement, fear, freedom, and guilt, this track is the most overtly sexual. Navigating the tensions that accompany a teenage crush is difficult enough as is, let alone one where you have to overcome religious conditioning. Double-entendres, brooding, moody instrumentation, and soaring vocals make this a memorable and enjoyable performance. 'I, I want to take your picture/Picture me in bed/Under your crucifix/Under your long black hair/I'll see you on Sunday/I wanna make them sing, ah.' Track 10 - Portrait of a Dead Girl This track was inspired by a portrait on Pinterest featuring an older woman wearing a red dress, seated on a bed, with an enormous wolf next to her. For Abigail, the picture embodied a toxic relationship. At first, you feel protected and safe because the wolf is tethered, but you gradually become aware of the peril in which you've placed yourself. This song resonates with anyone who has found themselves struggling to free themselves from similar circumstances. 'They look so safe/A guard dog there just for her/If only she knew that with one wrong move/He'll turn around and tear off her hands/And I wish you had given me/The courtesy of ripping out my throat/And I wish that I let you have/The dignity of letting me go.' Track 11 - Nothing Matters The album's debut single has undergone many iterations, starting off as a slow piano ballad. Eventually, additions such as horn sections, vocal experimentation, and guitar solos helped the track evolve into the version we know today. Written to capture the euphoric sensation of being in love, this song describes Abigail's relationship with her then-beau. This song, however, was intended to be a later release; initially, they had discussed reserving that honor for Burn Alive. 'Even when the cold comes crashing through/I'm putting all my bets on you/I hope they never understand us/I put my heart inside your palms/My home in your arms/Now we know, nothing matters/Nothing matters.' Track 12 - Mirror The album's final track examines concepts such as outside validation, self-identity, and emotional vulnerability. Raw, gritty, part curse, and part plea, this track delivers an experience that has a very witchy vibe to me, very reminiscent of Florence + The Machine. Haunting, breathy vocals interlace with particularly excellent work on keys and strings accented by Rebekah's contributions on drums. 'Cause lately I've been drinkin'/I need to stop my thinkin'/Tell me how you're feeling/I'll reflect the reason.' Prelude to Ecstasy is, without a doubt, going to be in my top ten albums for 2024. The creativity, talent, and vision of the band have come together to create an unforgettably rich and truly immersive experience for the listener. The Last Dinner Party is currently on tour in North America and has just recently announced newly added UK/Europe tour dates. VeeAlwaysHere stays true to his artist name, taking the oath to ‘always be there’ a little too seriously in his newest track. He has found himself in the ping-ponging of love that is a situationship, as so many of us do. His single released this past March, “Waste My Time”, details his emotions and frustrations. The song is fast paced and electronic, almost feeling like something that would be played at a club. He wastes no time getting into the verses, the only intro being a couple of words drowning in a synth effect and a couple of plucks of an electric guitar. The quick pace of his words and electronic drums and guitars in the background make this song feel like a fun track, even though his lyrics are emotional and irritated. His lyrics are a mix of foreground and background vocal tracks, giving the illusion of his main opinions, which then the voices in the back of his head combat. His chorus ends with “Even if we don't know where this is gonna go / isn't that what you're looking for / Go ahead and waste my time.” The bridge of this song is filled with his exasperation and annoyance at the situation, even though each line ends with him chanting “Go ahead and waste my time”. He would rather have this irritating situationship and at least have some of his partner than nothing at all. He gives her the go-ahead to keep playing around with his emotions, and he knows that all of this might just be for nothing. Despite this knowledge and his annoyance, this is not the end of this situation. VeeAlwaysHere is 28 years old, and has always loved American Pop music, despite language barriers when he was young. Born and raised in Siberian Russia, he began writing his own music at a young age after learning the English language in less than three years. He is entirely self-taught, and works to produce, write, record, and mix all of his own music. His main focus is to create music that tells stories, such as the songs he fell in love with when he was a child. The longer you wait, the older you get, and by the time you gather enough nerves to finally do what you want to, the chance might already be gone. So, be the fool, make that attempt, and try as best as you can because if you never take that initial leap, you’ll spend the rest of your life regretting not having done it. With such powerfully-charged lyrics, bouncing reggae-style guitar, and smooth vocals, “make a move” is all slick and sly, and encourages its listeners to get out of their comfort zone to take that chance before it’s too late. The first thing you’ll notice about “make a move” is just how groovy it is– there’s something so hypnotic about how the strings and percussion pull you in with their cyclical beats, coiling around one another as dee’s vocals tie them all together. Once you put all these factors together– rhythmic instrumentals, fantastic vocals, and a message that wraps the song together so nicely– “make a move” is easily identified as a uniquely singular pop song that coaxes you in with its superb composition and addictive beats, all while telling you to just make that move!
