  • Album Review: "Hereditary" - Cassadee Pope

Hereditary by Cassadee Pope via cassadee.com Hereditary  by Cassadee Pope is the artist’s first full reintroduction back into the pop-rock genre. The album is comprised of twelve unforgettable tracks that display the singer’s iconic vocals and clever lyricism. Having been a fan since Pope’s Hey Monday days, I was ecstatic to learn about the return to her roots. Hereditary has both heavy anthems and soft ballads, providing songs for all different music tastes. From the first single, People That I Love Leave, it was apparent that this new era was going to be one of the best projects by the talented artist.   Track List People That I Love Leave Eye Contact Secret More To Me Three of Us Rom Coms Almost There Capacity I Died (Feat. Daisha McBride) Hereditary Ever Since The World Ended (feat. Aaron Gillespie) Wrong One Cassadee Pope is a singer-songwriter from West Palm Beach, Florida, now based in Nashville. In 2008, she made her musical debut as the lead vocalist and co-founder of the pop-punk band, Hey Monday . After one full-length album and three EPs, the band went on an indefinite hiatus in 2011. The following year, she released her solo self-titled EP before auditioning for the 3rd season of   The Voice . She joined Blake Shelton ’s team and became the first female winner of the show. The following year, she released her first full-length album  Frame by Frame,  which charted on the top 10 of the Billboard 200  and debuted at number one on Top Country Albums. In 2015, Pope collaborated with Chris Young on his single “Think Of You” from his album, I’m Coming Over . This song became Pope’s first number-one track on the U.S. Country Airplay chart and earned her a Grammy nomination, making her the first The Voice contestant to receive this prestigious status. After parting from her record label, Pope returned to independently releasing music. Hereditary marks her third album as an independent artist. Her discography is extensive, from her pre- and post- The Voice days, ensuring there is truly something for everyone. She is currently on her The Hereditary Tour,  with supporting acts The Foxies and Natalia Taylar on select dates!   She will also be joining Marianas Trench on tour this fall and will be performing with Hey Monday at When We Were Young 2024  in Las Vegas this October and the Emo’s Not Dead Cruise 2025 departing in Miami. Check out her website to find dates near you and purchase tickets or VIP upgrades before they sell out. And make sure you follow her on all social media platforms to stay up to date with all new announcements! People That I Love Leave Hereditary kicks off with the fiery lead single, “People That I Love Leave.” Released over a year ago, the song was the first taste of Pope’s new era of music. The high-energy track shares the singer’s fears and anxieties regarding relationships due to past trauma. Pope confesses her inability to let herself fall. From familial relationships to romantic partnerships, she has seen loved ones leave without a second thought. Through her insightful lyrics, she tells her subject to not expect her to say “those three words.” However, she reassures them as she sings: “I know you're confused, but it's not about you// It's not something you did, it's just not something I do.” After years of being burned, she refuses to let anyone else in. It is a heart-wrenching notion that showcases a darker, more jaded side of Pope. With the up-tempo, pop-rock production, “People That I Love Leave” was the perfect song to introduce the flawless album. Eye Contact The high-energy soundscape continues with the second track. While the previous song reflects Pope’s fear of being left by those she loves, “Eye Contact” shares the story of when this fear becomes reality. She kicks off the song with the chorus containing the clever hook: “You said you’d never tell me goodbye// You left in the dark, I guess you were right// Straight to my face, an all-out attack// Now I hate eye contact.” Immediately, Pope wraps up the entire message of the song: trusting a “professional liar” that she couldn’t read. They lied to her face while holding her gaze, showing no indication of dishonesty. Now, Pope is living with the leftover trauma, unable to trust anyone— even when they are able to maintain eye contact. Alongside the feisty lyrics, the instrumentation contains the iconic pop-rock sound that Pope is effortlessly comfortable in, emphasizing that she is back home to where she belongs. Secret Pope has written every single one of her songs based on personal experiences. However, “Secret” is the first song to stray from this pattern. The track is inspired by the Hulu Original Series, Normal People . The show is about the secret love affair between a popular jock, Connell Waldron, and a socially inadept scholar, Marianne Sheridan. He refused to let anyone know they were dating, even turning a blind eye when his peers would bully her. This inevitably led to an unsurmountable distrust and resentment. Pope took this intricate plot line and turned it into an infectious track from Marianne’s point of view. The vulnerable lyrics explore her complex feelings of love, betrayal, and disappointment. Pope ingeniously brings to life the inner workings of the character’s feelings, showcasing the artist's unmatched songwriting ability. More To Me “More To Me” was the first track written for Hereditary . At the time, Pope was unaware that she was even writing a new album. The song was a cathartic release when struggling with a musical identity crisis -- should she stay country or return to her roots of pop-punk? After releasing her previous album, Thrive , Pope was unsure where her career was heading and felt that "none of it mattered." “More To Me” was the catalyst for following her intuition and going back to rock music. The song details moving on from the bitterness and resentment held against someone who did her wrong. She realized that even without them around, she still let them have a hold over her. But now she has determined that there “is more to me than hating you now.” The song instantly caught my attention with the dark pop-rock soundscape and heavier lyrics, making it my favorite track from the project. Three of Us “Three Of Us” was the only ballad released prior to the album, giving the audience a taste of Hereditary ’s softer side. While the production leans on a more subtle soundscape, the lyrics pack a massive punch. Pope details the struggle of watching a loved one crippled by addiction. She paints a picture of wanting to help this person, but nothing she does will help. In the chorus, she sings: “It’s you and me and the drugs make three// If they’re so damn good how can I compete.” While she loves them dearly, she can no longer sit back and watch it happen. She continues in the chorus with the lyrics: “You love to say that I’m fucked up// It’s either you and me or the drugs// ‘Cause I’m done with the three of us.” This first line holds a double meaning. One interpretation is that her loved one is telling Pope that it is not fair to give them an ultimatum. However, the second can be interpreted as the subject saying they are “fucked up” from the drugs. The double entendre cuts deeper, making the audience think more about Pope’s poetic lyrics. “Three Of Us” discusses a subject that the singer has not covered, providing a song for fans to resonate with while also being a cathartic release for her. While I enjoy Pope’s high-energy anthems, I was pleased to hear another classic emotional ballad from the talented artist. Rom Coms “Rom Coms” is the more mature version of “Cinematic” from Pope’s debut album, Frame by Frame. While the latter track is about the whimsical, picturesque romance portrayed in movies, “Rom Coms” details a more realistic story. When she was younger, she dreamt of a love found in a romantic comedy—where they would show up with a boombox on your front lawn. But now, as she has gotten older, she is glad this is not the case. In the chorus, she tells her partner, “’Cause I love the mess we’re in, my fucked up prince// It’s time to let go of all the unrealistic fantasies// You make it seem like we don’t need the silver screen.” Pope breaks down the walls, defying the expectations of love. They do not need to be picture-perfect, as long as the chemistry, love, and respect are all still there. Almost There Pope shares another side of herself that she has not before in her highly infectious song, “Almost There.” The track showcases a more sensual and intimate storyline, as she divulges the private moments between her and her partner. Regarding the song’s background, Pope wanted to embrace her sexuality and indulge in her desires. She acknowledges that from a young age, especially young women, people are taught to suppress their natural urges. Instead, she rejects this idea and sheds the shame held over her head. Now, she proudly boasts about the beautiful relationship she has been in for years and uses her voice to encourage others to stay true to who they are. With her astonishing vocal range and fiery production, “Almost There” is an instant fan-favorite. Capacity The lyrics of “Capacity” immediately caught my attention with its cutthroat, straight-to-the-point lyrics. In the same vein as her song, “Say It First,” the new track is about the ending of a relationship—where both people know it is about to end. Instead, Pope is pleading to her partner to rip the Band-Aid off and tell her it is over. She knows they are stalling, and she just wants them to end it now, rather than stringing her along. In the bridge, she tells them: “It might suck to hear but things would be clearer// Hey, yeah, I might regret you but I’d respect you// Hey, I don’t need a favor, don’t need a savior.” These cheeky lines instantly became my favorite as Pope holds nothing back and tells them they are not doing her, or themselves, any good by bottling their feelings. She does not have “the capacity” to wait for them to finally spit it out. From the moment I heard this song, it has been living rent-free in my mind, proving to be one of Pope’s best tracks. I Died (Feat. Daisha McBride) As a fan of the macabre, my morbid curiosity attached to “I Died” the moment Pope announced it. The song shares the despairing moment of realization that the person you once loved treats you like you no longer exist— like you died. Each lyric left my jaw on the floor as Pope exposed her muse for the traitor that they are. While the song may be about a romantic relationship, there is also the possibility that it may be about her former label, making the song even more tragic in my personal opinion. As the final single prior to the album’s release, the song gave listeners the first taste of the album’s collaborations. Daisha McBride makes her first appearance in the second verse with a fiery solo. While rap is not my preferred genre, McBridge’s talent astounded me, and her voice paired wonderfully with Pope and the song’s heavier soundscape. With the grim lyrics and dark production, “I Died (feat. Daisha McBride) instantly became my favorite pre-album release single. Hereditary “Hereditary” is a “self-deprecating” track that details Pope’s generational trauma in a humorous tone. The catchy production paired with the singer’s cheeky manner when speaking the hook immediately made the song become one of my favorite tracks. The song displays Pope’s funny side – something that longtime fans are well acquainted with through interactions via live shows and social media posts. Her hilarious quips are a way to cope with her trauma, providing a cathartic release for herself while simultaneously giving listeners something to resonate with. The song is an electrifying pop-rock anthem that quickly became one of my top favorites on the album and from the artist overall. Ever Since The World Ended (feat. Aaron Gillespie) “Ever Since The World Ended” starts as a soothing rock ballad with an acoustic guitar and soft drum production that slowly builds into a passionate anthem. The increase in the soundscape emphasizes the heavy emotions behind the vulnerable lyrics about heartbreak and longing. The song features a collaboration with seasoned pop-rock artist, Aaron Gillespie , known for being the drummer and clean vocalist for Underoath , the lead singer and rhythm guitarist for The Almost , and a previous touring drummer for Paramore . Pope and Gillespie’s voices effortlessly blend to create the epitome of a pop-rock duet. Both vocalists have unique voices that fit perfectly with the genre, so it comes as no surprise that their collaboration would be a hit. Throughout the song, the lyrics compare the ending to a relationship as the apocalypse. They miss their muse and have been going crazy “ever since the world ended.” With the emotional lyrics and powerful production, Pope and Gillespie leave listeners craving more collaborations from the talented pair. Wrong One Similar to the previous track, “Wrong One” starts with a soft, acoustic verse that subtly introduces the song’s unique storyline. This lulls the listener into a sense of comfort, believing it will be another soothing ballad. However, after the final line of the first verse, the song explodes into a passionate anthem. Pope has a powerful voice with incredible vocal control, displayed by every single song she has released and her well-deserved win on The Voice . And yet, I still find myself in awe when hearing her remarkable vocals. Her voice hits impressive high notes with such ease that she makes it look easy. “Wrong One” was one of the songs that left me with my jaw on the floor, overwhelmed by the singer’s impeccable range. Ending the album with this intense track leaves listeners with a permanent mark, compelling them to hit repeat on the flawless project. In the fifteen years of being a fan, I have been a witness to Pope’s different career phases. From the early years with Hey Monday, her solo pop EP, and her The Voice audition (I remember it being the only season I cared enough to vote in) to her transition into country music, becoming an independent artist, and returning to rock music, I have stuck through it all. And enjoyed every moment. Pope has such an intimate and personal approach to her music, making every single fan feel seen and heard through her lyrics. She is authentic to who she is, which only makes her listeners fall for her even more. Hereditary and the ongoing success of the tour, is only proof that Pope is in her element. • Review: "Sunburn" - SINEM

"You might as well be dead". What a way to begin a song, it brings a serious tone to the song that the music began to show. The way SINEM's voice goes even higher on the most painful parts of the song really drives the heart break right into your soul as you listen. SINEM writes “This song is about loving somebody who's losing themselves. It resembles the feeling of a bright summer day fading into a burning sunset. The production of this track sounds organic thanks to acoustic guitars and live drums.” SINEM captivates the listener as the story goes deeper into just what has occurred here to lead to such a somber mood. That imagery that SINEM mentions in what the song is meant to capture is quite the picture. “The feeling of a bright summer day fading into a burning sunset.” With this imagery in mind, SINEM beautifully illustrates all that comes with loving someone and how that love can be unwavering even long after the person becomes a shell of who they used to be. The sun still has all of its bright shiny power, but it’s now taken new form into a sunset, the sun is going down, and so is all of its brightness. SINEM’s usage of her head voice when singing the most delicate parts “they gave you tinted glasses to make the sunshine when it rains”. It seems as if SINEM is saying that they tried to hide the darkness from her loved one but they saw through the facade being presented to them. SINEM mainly focuses on the here and now- “I still love you even if you’re faded”. And again, with present tense -“I look through your eyes and see there’s not much left.” I think it’s important to note that SINEM speaks about looking through someone’s eyes and not in them. At this point in time, there’s no longer anything in them, but SINEM can see straight through them, see emptiness. One can only imagine how absolutely heartbreaking it must be to look at someone and have so many memories of the person they used to be, but be met with their current state which is a hollowed-out version of them. So, in the end, we’re left with the question of Do we stay? Do we try and help them rebuild themselves? Or do we let go?. With this song, 19-year-old German/Turkish singer/songwriter, SINEM, gives voice to an emotion that many know all too well, the pains of true unconditional love. She narrates the heartbreaking tale of losing someone without physically losing them. SINEM’s voice is a force to be reckoned with as she lends it to storytelling for all to hear. Her voice has been described as “unparalleled” and “ a force that transcends genres, reflects the maturity and depth of a seasoned artist despite her young age.” SINEM’s social media presence is sprinkled with clips of her singing classics as well as her original songs. SINEM’s original songs seem to focus heavily on human experience and breaking stigmas. SINEM’s online presence is one that dots all of the I's that are expected of us all today – Facebook, Instagram, Spotify, Tik Tok, YouTube, she is both seen and heard at her own discretion, much to her fans’ delight. • Review: "ruin july" - Anderson Hao

This song, “ruin july” by Anderson Hao, is a rhythmic indie-pop song all about how the memories of a bad relationship can taint something you once loved. Made in a garage studio in Los Angeles, California, Hao wrote and recorded this to process what’d happened to her the year before, and ended up creating a song that touches at the heart of what so many people experience. With lyrics like “stuck in time with the months running away,” “I don’t think I’ll ever get to explain,” and the titular “you ruined july for me,” this song so poignantly describes how one person can mar something that was once such a big part of you. But with time, you find yourself and your peace again. “ruin july” relies on rhythmic beats mixed with soft vocals to create a moody atmosphere that perfectly carries the message of the song. Starting right off the bat with catchy percussion, you’re pulled into it immediately, bopping your head and tapping your foot. The almost lighthearted instrumentals are a perfect contrast to the darker lyrics, keeping you engaged and always listening for something new every time you hit play. The two and a half minute length leaves you wanting more, a perfect length to keep you coming back. Overall, the slightly experimental, but familiar sound is soothing for all fans of sad music, and it’s already become a favorite of mine. • Review: "EASIER" - RuBe

The decline of something that we once believed was ineffably special. The slow wane of a love that once burned with a smoldering passion, slipping out of our grasp faster than we can think to save it. It’s a breakdown of love, a bond that used to burgeon akin to that of a delicate flower, the sullen tragedies that come with loving someone, how fast love can burn away into nothing. The song “EASIER” by RuBe tells a similar desolate situation in the harmonious tune of a song about the breakdown of a love that was once burning with affection, only to decline slowly at the dispense of unfaithfulness and being unable to forgive the person who had inflicted and caused so much pain and confusion. This song has the ability to tell the story of many listeners who have experienced similar circumstances of distress and unforeseen heartache. As the song expresses in heartfelt lyrics “it’s hard for me to forgive you in my heart”, which describes the difficulty and intense level of maturity it takes in a person to find it in their aching hearts to forgive someone who has betrayed their trust– something a plethora of listeners can, woefully, find themselves relating to. Click here to listen to "EASIER"! The song starts off with an intense opening that grabs the listeners in an embrace, setting the tone and message of the song just within the first few seconds. Gradually, it carries out, giving our artist, RuBe, the opportunity to share her mellifluous voice and convey her emotions using sincere lyrics that pull at the sore strings of her listeners' hearts’. As we are introduced to the main hook of the song, the sound lingers, hanging on in a sort of echo as the beat of the song carries the rest of the tempo, matching the simple yet intensely vehement words that RuBe expresses. All flowing together, creating a sound that is so intricate yet also so austere. This song is something I find myself resonating with especially, experiencing similar emotions that this song so skillfully conveys through its lyrics and the emotion in RuBe’s voice. Although the meaning behind the lyrics holds some weight, I feel this song can be relished in many ways. Through its expressive lyrics as one, and through its resonating sound. RuBe, the talented artist behind the song “EASIER” is an exceptionally young talent being only 19 years old and already so involved in her career as a musician! She is a singer and songwriter who resonates with sounds like dance and pop– especially known for her meaningful lyrics. RuBe sings about deep topics like mental health, love, and grief. While listening to her work, it’s hard to ignore her innate talents of storytelling through each one of her songs, bringing out a new set of emotions and sentiments for any listener who may find themselves contemplating the lyrics. It’s evident just how passionate RuBe is about singing and writing, she even performed at a BBC introducing gig and was made “BBC ONE TO WATCH” in the year 2022 for her songs “Broken” and “Trying”! As RuBe continues to grow as an artist and talented musician, I can’t help but wonder what kind of bright future is in store for her! I look forward to hearing more of her music! • Review: "The End" - Lullabee

Rising artist Lullabee has introduced “The End” - an electronically electrifying pop song that makes you want to immediately run to a dance floor. While a relatable sense is brought to the ears of listeners with the track’s breakup narrative, Lullabee’s songwriting goes beyond common storytelling. “The End” dives into a personal, liberating journey that is bittersweet. The track explores, essentially, both sides of a coin - loss on one side, love on the other. As Lullabee delves into the complexities of this relationship, you begin to discover little pieces that stick with you unlike some other pop songs. Although it is undeniably a danceable track, the layers to the relationship in combination with well-crafted lyrics create a listening experience to pay attention to. While listening to “The End”, I found both my head bopping along and my focus directed on how the lyrics made me feel - resulting in a comforting connection between my body & brain, tagging alongside Lullabee’s art.  Upon my first listen of “The End”, I made connections to other artists such as Charli XCX, Robyn, Fred Again.., etc. Lullabee creates the perfect blend of dance, pop, and electronic qualities in her music, drawing similarities to these artists but additionally making her stand out. While Lullabee is a modern artist and has a modern music sound, the song altogether also brings you back to another point in time. I found myself relating “The End” to beloved 80’s hits like Obsession by Animotion and West End Girls by Pet Shop Boys. As my relationship with this song grew over time, so did my keenness toward the specific backing elements that I picked out as I dissected the song. Although they are electronic elements, I discovered specific notes that remind me of classical instruments - just elevated. These bits brought out tones of a light, airy instrument like the flute, while being supported by brilliantly utilized aspects such as a synthesizer. With drums that fade in & out and a voice that melts perfectly into the electronic world laid out before you, you’ll find yourself picturing things like neon lights and a fun, freeing night with your closest friends. Katie Brown, also known as Lullabee, is a rising musician from London, England. Starting out in 2022, Lullabee originally began making nostalgic indie music. Now, she has transitioned her sound to fall under the umbrella of Alternative Pop. She has been featured on radio stations such as BBC Radio, Amazing Radio UK, and Amazing Radio in the United States. In addition, her content has been recognized & featured by Spotify in their category of “British Indie, Fresh Vibes.” Lullabee says she draws her inspiration from artists such as Mitski, Tove Lo, and BANKS. With soft, comforting vocals and pure craftsmanship of personal experiences, I cannot wait to see more to come from her!  Written By Madison Spies FOLLOW LULLABEE: Instagram | Spotify  | Facebook  | YouTube

  • Review: "Version of You" - Sophia Rae

Sophia Rae’s latest single, “Version of You,” is a song that delves into just how blinding love can sometimes be. It discusses how hard it can be to let go of a relationship – so much so that you create a perfect version of them in your head to avoid confronting the reality of the situation. Rae’s lyrics also explore the lightbulb moment that I’m sure many can relate to. She addresses that moment when you finally see the person for who they really are. Her lyrics, “What if I could see you like everyone sees you // What if I could survive without us, without you // You’re a mirror, I’m a mess, you reflect it right back, right back // Falling deeper, even tho I know better than that,” express a deep level of vulnerability and self-reflection that really encapsulate the heartache of letting go. “Version of You” is an indie-pop ballad with an ethereal, symphonic melody that matches the emotional tone of the song. It starts off with a simple piano and guitar that is met with Rae’s soothing vocals that effortlessly glide listeners through the story. Just before the song enters the first chorus, listeners are met with a beautiful violin melody that is paired with Rae’s soft, hushed harmonies. Together, they flawlessly reflect the somewhat somber, yet empowering story of someone who finds the courage to let go of the idealized person and relationship they envisioned in their head. Sophia Rae is an 18-year-old Canadian singer-songwriter who wears many hats. Rae has many passions that keep her driven. She is an entrepreneur who alongside her mother, co-launched Girl on Fire Empowerment for teens. Together, they also co-host and produce a mother-daughter podcast called SPARK. In addition, Rae is an accomplished public speaker and mental health advocate who has spoken at various conferences. At just 14-years-old, Rae spoke in front of 200,000 people as a TedX performer. She is also about to embark on a new journey as a student at Arcadia University. While some may just be discovering Rae’s innate talent, she’s been a creator from the very beginning. A lover of writing poetry and short novellas, Rae’s passions are endless, and it’s clear that they’re leading her on the right path. The group is known for their modern take on the Glam Rock era, combining the visual aesthetics of the ‘70s time period with a contemporary sound. Capturing the attention of a new generation of listeners, Royal Sugar has already garnered 114K followers and 3.4M likes on TikTok, 99.3K followers on Instagram, and hundreds of thousands of streams across various platforms since their 2021 debut. Their most popular song, “Fleeting Love” has reached 823,866 streams on Spotify, showing the success the band currently enjoys and will hopefully continue to grow. 2. Sea Girls Formed in 2015, Sea Girls are an English indie/pop-rock band consisting of members Henry Camamile, Rory Young, Andrew Dawson, and Oliver Khan. The four-piece met in school, bonding over a love for music and leading to their 2017 debut with the single “Call Me Out.” They have since been building an impressive catalog, having 3 studio albums, 4 EPs, and several singles to their name. Sea Girls’ first two albums, Open Up Your Head  and Homesick , resulted in the group charting within the UK Top 3, later followed by their 2024 album, Midnight Butterflies , charting within the UK Top 5. 1. Honey Revenge Formed in 2021, Honey Revenge is an LA-based pop-rock band currently consisting of members Devin Papadol and Donovan Lloyd. The group originally formed as a five-piece band, later becoming a duo when the COVID pandemic prompted the three other members to leave. Though it took them quite some time to decide on a name, Papadol and Lloyd settled on Honey Revenge as it reflects the band’s aesthetic–cutesy but rigid. They released their debut single, “Miss Me,” in November of 2021, setting the band up for the success they’ve been enjoying today. As of now, Honey Revenge has 545,795 monthly listeners on Spotify, 198K followers on Instagram, and 151.1K followers and 3M likes on TikTok, showing the band’s ability to build a solid fanbase in a short amount of time. Honey Revenge has gone on to release their first album, Retrovision , in 2023 and a brand-new single, “Recipe For Disaster,” in 2024, which can be streamed on Spotify and Apple Music. • Review: "Boy Behind the Mask" - GAUSTAD

GAUSTAD’s latest single “Boy Behind the Mask” chronicles the progression of living a lie to experiencing your truth. It seems as though, from even the earliest memories you have, your complete identity has remained carefully hidden. A deep anger resides inside of you and it protrudes into every aspect of your life. You have always tried to ignore those feelings of being someone you did not quite understand. There has always been another side of your identity that was different than what you were told to be. What you are is not what you believed you were supposed to be, and this has taken over your life. Differing gender identities resonate within you and all your forceful hiding has reached its limit. No amount of masking your inner conflicts with numbing substances can truly free you. Who you truly are, as complicated and different as it seems, craves acceptance and understanding from within yourself. Your innermost fantasy is being true to yourself, and that means self-acceptance. The anger that once permeated throughout your entire being no longer exists as you accept the boy behind the mask. “Boy Behind the Mask” is an indie and alt pop anthem with a somber yet introspective tone and meaning. We are first introduced to melancholy piano chord progressions that set the mood. With the introduction of GAUSTAD’s stunning vocal performance, we begin leaning heavily into the overall narrative. The instrumentation leads you to believe that this single may be an entirely somber experience, but as the story progresses, we learn of the redemptive self-love the narrator gradually accepts. As percussive elements are introduced, we understand that the complex feelings displayed in the beginning are not meant to last. The audience is expected to, and does, learn and understand more as the song progresses. This accumulates into a shared experience of growth and progression. GAUSTAD is an American singer-songwriter who already has a thriving music career at just twenty-two years old. They first stepped into the public eye in 2018 with their cover of Hozier’s “Take Me to Church” which has amassed over 20 million views over time. In 2021, they released their first E.P. as well as their debut album. One of the singles from their debut album features a music video that had a surprise guest appearance from Law & Order: Special Victims Unit actress Mariska Hargitay. They received relative success and have made guest appearances and features in many well-known platforms. GAUSTAD has made guest performances and features on shows such as The Kelly Clarkson Show and The Today Show. They have received praise and admiration on social media from celebrities such as Lady Gaga on Twitter and Mick Jagger on Instagram. Through their music, they showcase their life experiences by incorporating it through their lyricism. Make sure to follow them on social media and give “Boy Behind the Mask” a listen! • Review: "Confession" - Alvin Weise

Pop newcomer Alvin Weise just put out his third single, "Confession," on July 5, 2024. The moody electro-pop song tackles Weise's experience moving on from a relationship that just wasn't good for him anymore. He realized that he had been too forgiving, and he couldn't continue the cycle of listening to excuses and staying with a person that simply wasn't the right match for him. Similar to artists like Benjamin Ingrosso and Dermot Kennedy, Weise has crafted an earworm pop sound complemented by authentic lyricism and rich vocals. Make sure to add "Confession" to all your favorite playlists. "Confession" is a synth-studded breakup anthem about finally cutting ties with the person that has a pattern of betraying you. Written, produced, and performed by Weise, the song feels true to him and his experience with falling in and out of love. He lets us inside his struggles with escaping into a romance and trying to move on from it when reality catches up. This sentiment is expressed with lines like "Don't need your confession / There's no need to lie" and "Fuck your explanation / Baby, this is goodbye." He also touches on how he can fall into love like it is an addiction. He opens up about this with the line, "Your love's infectious and I need a remedy." Even if you are not breaking free from a relationship, "Confession" is the perfect song to sing and dance along to. Alvin Weise is a 25-year-old singer-songwriter from Stockholm, Sweden. Growing up in a musical household, he picked up the guitar at 10 years old and has been on his artistic journey since. Currently, he is finishing up the last year of his education in songwriting at Musikmakarna in Stockholm. He put out his first single, "Starting Over," only earlier this year in March. If you enjoyed "Confession," make sure to check out the rest of Weise's releases. • Review: "Foreign Feelings" - FION

Developing a harmless crush on someone can be rather intimidating. Our feelings of a plausible love may be more than certain, yet we still somehow manage to second-guess ourselves and our decisions. Even more so after we have faced previous heartache, trying so hard to turn over a new leaf, practically running away from such daunting emotions just to spare ourselves the stress and apprehension that come with crushing on someone new, dubious on whether or not our hearts and soul can take on a new love after conquering prior heartbreak. These feelings are all too foreign, but, the vehement emotions this crush makes us feel are too strong, and in the end, we give into that natural yearning that aches in our hearts. We find that we are  ready to love, after all. “Foreign Feelings” by FION expresses similar emotions in the tune of a harmonious song with lyrics that describe the doubtful sentiments we feel when we develop intimate feelings for someone. Just like the lyrics suggest “I still feel scared” Although we are sure of our feelings, we still can’t help but feel vulnerable and scared of such foreign feelings. The sound is lighthearted, and the innately talented voice of our singer, FION, adds a delicate touch, lacing the song with the light and airy feelings we experience during such an innocent and heart-racing crush. Listening closer to the song, I notice that the tempo seems to rise, and the speed seems to increase, starting off slow and deliberate, mimicking the very start of a typical crush. Quickly, the tempo of the song changes and the speed is faster, imitating the adrenaline rushes we feel whenever we interact with our crushes– our hearts instantly respond to it. Fion’s emotive voice adds intensity to the song with its heartfelt lyrics that will adeptly resonate with any listeners who have previously experienced similar emotions. I think the song and its expressive lyrics have captured the emotions so accurately, skillfully managing to redirect the song from expressing dubious sentiments at first, to expressing decisive ones at the end of the song. FION, the incredible artist behind the song “Foreign Feelings”, is a singer and songwriter who resonates most with genres like alternative pop, rock pop, indie pop, and pop! Fion, who is only 21 years old, finds a deep and vehement passion for making music that comes from her very soul. “Foreign Feelings” was Fion’s first single for her very first EP which is coming up in August of this year! Fion has released multiple tracks in the past but this would be her very first EP as a singer! Her most recent song is titled “Save You” which was released on July 5th. Fion enjoys connecting with her listeners and supporters, often interacting with them by uploading snippets of her songs and uploading photos of herself and her journey throughout life. I cannot wait to hear more of Fion’s work, and I will look forward to her EP that comes out this August! Follow her socials to stay in contact with her and indulge in her life as a singer. • Review: "Out of Sight" - Olivia Burnette

Out of Sight grabs our attention right out of the gate with the upbeat flow of the music. Once the artist begins singing, we're sucked in yet again by the relatable lyrics. The title and the lyrics help the listener connect the song to the saying "Out of sight, out of mind." The basis of the song is that moving on after heartbreak can be easier if we can't find our ex or if they simply aren't around. We're given powerful lyrics like "You love the feeling / But don't like me." This lets the listener feel the ache of heartbreak for the smallest of moments. The song continues and says "Out of sight / Out of mind / Easy to heal when you're hard to find / Left to decide, I have no choice but to move on." We then experience the power that we hold after heartbreak, the choice to move past it most of the time for the better. The beat of the song does a great job of setting the mood to feel something like sarcastic empowerment. This in no way is a bad thing; it makes the song that much more relatable. This particular mood resonates with those who have experienced heartbreak and know that most of the time, you want 'the best for your ex' we all know what that really means. The guitar elevates this song and gives it the perfect amount of power pertaining to the matter at hand. When these elements are paired with the artist's voice, it not only makes the song beautiful to listen to, but it also brings the message full circle. The artist's pitch makes the song flow in a way that was necessary for it to impact the listeners. Burnette is from Los Angeles, and her music currently falls under the indie pop category. Her target audience is those who can relate and connect to topics like love, self discovery, and the ups and downs of life. When asked who inspires her, Olivia Burnette said, "I grew up listening to and loving Taylor Swift and Carole King. I hope my songs can provide the same comfort those songs have given me." Other songs of hers include The Last Word and Hurt you to Lose Me. Her latest releases have pushed and challenged the musical boundaries within the indie genre. Olivia Burnette isn't going anywhere, and she is sure to blow us all out of the water with her unique and intriguing style of music. • Review: "Last Breath" - Caleb Hearn

Caleb Hearn is back and more vulnerable than ever in his latest playful single entitled, “Last Breath.” This beautiful track touches on the excitement of new love and the challenges which follow. Caleb’s singer-songwriter roots are showcased through the utilization of crisp imagery such as the passing of seasons and the following line, “I wanna walk with you into the dark/ I wanna see where forever could end.” Time and forever is neatly packed inside the lyrics of “Last Breath,” symbolized by the decision to “buy a ring” and the numbers integrated into each of the verses, “Five weeks of winter just came and went/ Blink and it’s 6 months, you’re moving in.” The fast-paced nature of the beginning of this relationship is not abnormal, and I’m sure many of us can relate to moving quickly during the honeymoon phase. Overall, the theme of unconditional love fills this song with romance, and the lyrics are expertly edited into a piece of art which flows nicely, sounds amazing, and means a lot. “Last Breath” by Caleb Hearn is a wonderfully crafted track which sounds both personal and intimate in nature. Its production is simple, yet romantic. Let’s take a deep dive into the instrumentals and soundscape of the track. This love song begins with a gentle piano which aids in setting the tone for Caleb’s heartfelt lyrics. A great choice for “Last Breath” was to incorporate an echo on the main vocals, it adds depth and a sense of closeness, all while its harmonies work to enhance the emotional impact. The gradual build of the song includes the addition of soft guitar strums alongside the subdued piano, and by the end a beautiful chorus joins Caleb. The overarching mood and tone I would use to describe the track is tender, and I truly believe this is a perfect song to slow dance to.. whether it be in the middle of a dance floor, or in your own kitchen! Caleb Hearn is an accomplished Nashville-based singer-songwriter originating from the small town Mount Airy, North Carolina. He’s achieved notability and gained a core audience through consistently posting his musical content on social media ( Specifically Tiktok ). His breakout single, “Always Be” which beautifully  honors a friend of his who tragically passed away was one of Caleb’s first successes. This helped him gain traction, followed by other hits such as “Brown Eyes, Brown Hair” and collaborations with music industry juggernauts such as Jillian Rossi. Hearn’s audience has watched his creativity and honesty grow and evolve into the impressive artist he is today, boasting nearly 100k Youtube subscribers and 2.9 million monthly Spotify listeners. If you absolutely loved “Last Breath” and want to hear more from Caleb Hearn, follow him on all social media listed below to keep an eye out for his brand new LP "Left On McKinney" out Sept. 6th!
