They began writing songs together, creating beautiful harmonies that would make them stand out from the crowd. In 2020, they released a single titled "Bloom" which went viral and gained over 17 million streams on Spotify alone. After steadily releasing several singles throughout last year and early this year, LULLANAS has put all the pieces together in collaboration with producer Keith Goodwin to create "pretty lies & time machines", their first ever album. butterflies in reverse Kicking off the album is the leading single which was released last year, "butterflies in reverse". This song was meant to set the tone for was yet to come for the anticipated album, which was an evolved sound, honest lyrics and the stunning signature vocals we've come to know and love from LULLANAS. "pretty lies & time machines" features finger-picked acoustic guitar, banjo and western piano chords which create this dreamy, country influenced soundscape that simulates the exact feeling LULLANAS sings about in this song. The emotional, whispery, echoed vocals and haunting melody will leave you grasping at your chest; especially if this is a relatable situation for you. nearsighted "nearsighted" brings back the country influence with it's stomping beat and twang. This song is an ear-worm with it's catchy "ays" which are easy to sing along with and will definitely get stuck in your head. "nearsighted" is about seeing things more clearly once you're on the outside looking in after leaving a relationship that wasn't good for you. They say love is blind, but once you're pulled out of it, you're able to realize just how much better off you are without them. Tommy Ashby) In "press play", LULLANAS brings back Tommy Ashby who we heard earlier on the song, "24/7". Singing in a mixture of unison and harmonies, LULLANAS sings together with Ashby throughout the whole duration of the song. The acoustic guitar plays gorgeous, heart-grasping sustained chords while beautiful vocals echo in the background. The vibe of this particular song reminds me of something Of Monsters and Men would do, with it's heavy folk influence and having the prominent mixture of both female and male vocals. "press play" uses plays on words as if life is like a movie that we can just rewind and fast forward where we can just skip to the parts we like, or rewind to when things were good. contradiction "contradiction" was the first song written for this album and was co-written with actress and singer/songwriter, Katelyn Tarver. The song began with a discussion about how the pandemic made them feel stuck. "We talked about the disconnect between our desires and our actions, how giving too much could ironically leave you with too little, how caring deeply won’t necessarily make someone care back, and how hard work can sometimes still lead to staying in the same place. After sharing all these thoughts, we all came to the realization that maybe we are all just walking and talking contradictions," they say. Out of every song on this album, there's no doubt in my mind that there's at least one line in this song that anybody in this world could relate to, especially with the state of everything these past few years. another story "another story" is a gentle, haunting and heartbreaking track that has early 2000's country-pop vibes; reminiscent of Taylor Swift's Fearless Era. It tells the story of when a relationship doesn't work out, but that other person wants to act like nothing happened. They're too coward to admit how much they hurt you, so they just pretend they never did. In the lyrics, they sing, "I'm sure when I see you again, you'll smile and pretend we're just friends / we both know in my head it's another story. I'm sure a year from now, you will have forgotten about it / but I know in my head it's another story." alright "alright" is one of the most vulnerable tracks on this album, especially for Atisha. Co-written with Canadian singer/songwriter Luca Fogale, "alright" was written as a confessional ballad for Atisha to confront her struggles with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and how falling in love was able to help her. “Instead of dwelling on the negative, the song explores how rituals, routines, and the need for control can be all-consuming, but how falling in love and letting someone into that part of my life completely broke the cycle I had been trapped in for the longest time” Atisha says. "alright" takes a bigger step towards pop and features an orchestral soundscape with a danceable beat. wish you well Closing out the album, we have the track "wish you well". Just based off the title alone, it seems like the perfect last song. Ending things on a very optimistic high note, "wish you well" serves as the most upbeat and energetic song on the album. Filled with percussion, bass and guitar, this song screams indie pop at it's core. This song is about saying goodbye to a relationship; and yeah, it might've sucked but at the end of the day you still wish them well. You're ready to move on to bigger and better things. "pretty lies & time machines" is a very strong, solid project from LULLANAS. I think they should be proud to call this their debut album. I think it's clear that they know who they are as artists and have found their signature sound. Their musical chemistry and sisterly bond are undeniable and you can feel it when you listen to their songs. They use mixtures of indie pop, folk, country as well as dreamy vibes to create this ethereal experience. If your favorite albums by Taylor Swift are Folklore and Evermore, then there's no doubt in my mind that you'll absolutely love not only the "pretty lies & time machines" album, but LULLANAS' discography as whole. It’s more like glancing behind your shoulder at your younger self briefly enough to catch a glimpse of them, only to throw yourself forward into the present to see that you’ve become exactly the kind of person you could lean on. The track’s instrumentals especially bolster this atmosphere, its piano and strings being gentle and kind; they feel inherently comforting with how soft they are, tentative in the beginning but swelling with confidence as the track continues on. At the end of the day while it's not always what we want, saying goodbye can be necessary but it's important to remember it does get better, and there is still life to be lived. The song gives off a rather upbeat and cheery tone. It's the kind of music that makes you want to dance in your living room at midnight. There is a mix of electronic rhythms, upbeat tempos, and a bit of a nostalgic synthpop feel. The artist's voice is smooth, sharp, and strong when singing the lyrics, this helps us understand the depths of the song, it keeps us engaged and entertained. All of these elements work together to present a strong, accepting mood. There is strength and power behind the music and lyrics. Bryce Fox’s recent single “Shadows” is dark and mysterious, and discusses Fox’s own issues with mental health and living in the present. “We put a tremendous amount of value and importance on being present and thinking about our future,” says Fox. “And as much effort we put on those two things, there’s just as much of our past that either helps or gets in the way of our progress.” Like so many others, Fox lives much of his life in his past, and describes his previous grievances as ‘shadows’ that creep their way into his current state of mind. He wrote this single while he was particularly struggling in this mental state, and it hopefully has brought light to this painful feeling. To anyone who has felt what Fox has felt, this track is a direct description of the thoughts in your head. He describes these shadows and the feeling they leave as they creep over his skin, as well as the way that they rattle his mind. The sound and overall vibe of this song feels like an early 2000s punk band with a more modern use of instrumentals and techno sounds. In between verses, he repeats the word “shadows”, as the soundscape pulsates and becomes electronic. His chorus expresses his frustration at his inhibition, as he sings “These shadows of old seem to come back around / They battle me rattle me why god now / Hang around like a bad tattoo, I’m black and blue I just don’t know / Will I ever be me without all of these”. As a Nashville based artist, Bryce Fox classifies himself as an alt-rock artist. He ties in many other genres and influences into his music, and has a similar sound to artists such as All Time Low and Logic. His impending EP The Bomb brings in new topics his music has not covered before, such as his marriage and the recent birth of his son. He credits these two life milestones as events that have changed his point of view on the world and deepened his emotions, and he is excited to have been able to make music that reflects these changes. There is no greater feeling than being at a concert with friends, especially when seeing an artist you have loved for so long. On June 1, I attended Niall Horan’s “The Show World Tour” with two of my closest friends for its stop in Alpharetta, GA. The three of us have always been huge One Direction fans and have loved supporting the boys on their solo tours through the years. I am a certified Niall girl and have loved him since the band’s early days. Even though I’ve always loved Harry, Louis, and Zayn, Niall has always held my heart in the palm of his hands. I had planned to see Niall on his “Nice To Meet Ya Tour” in 2020, which was sadly canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I was crushed when the tour was canceled, so I was determined to see him on this tour and love every moment of it. One of the best parts of this tour is that the majority of the tour stops were at our door venues, so we could appreciate the summer weather and have plenty of space to move. My group was sitting on the lawn toward the back of the space, so while we were far from the stage, we had a perfect view of everything and plenty of room to dance around. We got to the venue a bit early to see the opener for the tour, Del Water Gap. I had listened to a few Del Water Gap songs before, but seeing them live truly made me appreciate their lyricism and musicality. They started their set with the song, Coping on Unemployment, an introspective song about navigating your twenties after the effects of the pandemic. This song is relatable to nearly everyone at this age, and hearing it live was a nice reminder that no one is alone in their struggles. Even though we are a few years out from 2020, the toll that year took on us all still manifests in different ways. Being out in the warm, southern summer air and listening to music with strangers was not a luxury we could afford back then, and hearing this song reminded us to appreciate the moment we were in. It didn’t take long for the band to win over the audience and they soon played to a very enthusiastic audience. They finished their set with the song, Ode to a Conversation Stuck in Your Throat. This song stuck out to me due to its heartfelt lyrics about falling for someone and realizing that you want them and no one else. You don’t want anyone else to touch this person like you do, and you fear that someone may take them from you. The raw emotion of this song was the perfect end to the set. As the sun set, the LED screens on stage lit up with theatrical visuals and Niall took the stage with his 2019 hit, Nice To Meet Ya. This was one of the first singles from the Heartbreak Weather album that fans fell in love with. Upbeat and inviting, this was the perfect song to open his set. From there, he played fan favorites from his previous albums, including a mashup of Small Talk with Stevie Nicks’ The Edge of Seventeen, and On The Loose off of his debut solo album Flicker. Once the crowd was hyped up from the first three songs, Niall shifted his set to play more songs from his most recent album, The Show, after which the tour was named. I wasn’t as familiar with this album, but when he started playing Never Grow Up, I started singing along with everyone else. An acoustic guitar was brought out and Niall began an acoustic portion of the set, complete with his debut solo single, This Town, and songs from The Show including Science and You Could Start A Cult. This portion of the set was the perfect time to sit and soak it all in. A known romantic, Niall’s love songs never fail to make a crowd swoon. After his acoustic songs, he played Heaven, a dreamy song about falling in love and feeling like every moment of being with a partner is pure bliss. Looking around and seeing couples and groups of friends dancing was so heartwarming while I danced with my own friends. After playing Must Be Love, another romantic song about the power of loving someone and finding the solace of being devoted to another. From there, the moment we had all been waiting for finally arrived. The One Direction boys are known to play songs from One Direction songs on their solo tours, and it’s always a fun game to see which song they’re going to play. This time, Niall played Stockholm Syndrome from the album Four. This is one of my favorite One Direction songs and hearing it live always makes me lose my mind. Harry played this song on his first solo tour in 2017 and I’ve been wanting to hear it live again ever since. While the majority of his audience was women in their early twenties and older who grew up with him, there was a large handful of children with their parents who were likely hearing this song for the first time. It took me back to being in middle school and listening to this song on repeat as soon as I heard it. The only disappointment was that he didn’t play any other One Direction songs, but this was quickly forgotten as he played more songs from his first album, including the emotional Paper Houses, Mirrors, and Still. Niall ended the night with his hit single, Slow Hands. A slower, sexy song, Slow Hands has been popular amongst fans both old and new, and people who have just heard it in passing on the radio. The crowd went wild for the final song and we all left tired and happy. Niall truly knows how to put on a fun, interactive show and I highly recommend seeing him the next time he’s close to you. Fresh off of her Alan Hull award win this past January, singer-songwriter Isabel Maria has released her first of three singles funded by the award ceremony: Holy Smokes! Holy Smokes! is an acoustic anthem about a toxic car crash of a relationship. The track is earnest, relatable, and stunning. When discussing her writing process, Isabel states: "'A wise person once told me that anger is like fire - it only burns you if you hold it - so I suppose this song was my way of trying to let that fire go." And that fire burns through the whole song. With biting, sharp lyricism and a grand, dynamic instrumental, Holy Smokes! is an infectious song. Her writing style is unique in its metaphor usage and storytelling while still remaining catchy. Fans of artists like Olivia Rodrigo or Phoebe Bridgers would find much to love here, with Isabel's heartbreaking lyrics and emotionally raw vocal delivery. Isabel Maria is a Sunderland-based singer-songwriter who focuses on indie and folk music. Despite only being 17, Isabel has been creating thoughtful music for years now.
