Know Us is the latest single from R&B and pop singer, MarkJoseph. This song follows Joseph as he reminisces on an old relationship with positivity. He hopes to make amends and give it another try. Joseph opens the song by declaring, "If I could build a time machine/I'd go back and things would stay/Stay the same." Unfortunately, Joseph realizes he isn't Marty McFly and decides the only way to win him over is with his sweet vocals. The chorus sees Joseph begging his old lover to give him another chance when he sings, "Don't push me away/Can't kick this crave/I wanna know us." What I wanna know is what you put into this song, MarkJoseph, because I can't get enough of it. MarkJoseph, alongside his co-writer, Callie Huber Kiteck, are excellent poets. This is showcased especially in lines like, "Your hands look better with mines wrapped around like a sweater/Let me shield you from the cold/Are you ok with that?" I'm writing this with the hot sun beating down on me in the middle of May and I still felt a chill. The sonic vibe of Know Us was very chill and reminded me of the optimism one gets when the summer is about to start. The basis of the song is made up of an acoustic guitar riff that reminded me of the tunes I'd listen to as a kid like Hey Soul Sister by Train. The production is then propelled by a drum beat that gives the same energy as Sunflower by Post Malone and Swae Lee and Anti-Hero by Taylor Swift. However, the standout moments of this track were definitely when MarkJoseph's wonderful tenor vocals were shown off. He reminded me of some of the R&B greats like John Legend and Ne-Yo and hit some impressive high notes. You may not recognize the name yet, but there's definitely a chance you've seen MarkJoseph around. The Berklee College of Music graduate has been a background singer for both the Jonas Brothers and Nick Jonas' solo shows and has appeared with them on the GRAMMYS , Saturday Night Live , and the MTV Video Music Awards , among others. If there’s one thing I’ve always considered myself to be, it would be a hopeless romantic. I often find myself dreaming of one day living through my own love story, as if it was ripped straight from a fairytale. Flo Olavarria is an up-and-coming musical artist who recently released “Electricity”, a song that delves into this exact feeling. “Electricity” is a soft, sweet, and romantic song about the want for a magical love story, even when others believe you need to lower your standards. I really liked this song, and I think it works great as a sort of anthem to anyone who wants an extravagant romance. Since she is still very new to the industry, I wasn’t sure what to expect with the quality of Olavarria’s voice. But now, after listening to “Electricity”, I’m confused as to why she hasn’t started releasing music until now! She has a youthful, yet incredibly healthy-sounding voice. I think Olavarria is able to reach both her upper and lower registers with great ease. I also like how she’s never belting in this song. As she reaches her upper register, she transitions to using a soft head voice rather than a strong chest voice, which I think was the perfect move to make. As I said before, Flo Olavarria is a relatively new face in the industry, but the impact she has made so far is inspiring. There will come a time where things will get better, and you'll be where you want to be in your life. It may take some time, but you will get there. This song is very Taylor Swift and Lizzy McAlpine, both lyrically and sonically. "two ghosts" is about when someone has impacted you so deeply, that once they're not in your life anymore you feel haunted by them. You can't let go of the memories that are now engrained in your soul. The hurt they caused you will change who you are forever; but eventually, you'll be a better and stronger person because of it. no one you can save "no one you can save" is a empowering track that brings the EP title, "taller" into play. The song is about someone who thought they could beat you down but now you are stronger than you've ever been because of them. Lindsay sings "I know why you're so insecure, because I'm taller than I ever was". I take this statement both literally, and metaphorically. This whole EP is about getting older, growing up and maturing. So not only are you physically taller, but you're a changed person. Once you reach the point where you're getting success in life, you gain confidence looking back on how far you've come. It feels even better when those people who used to hurt you, aren't doing as well as you are because they never grew up and matured in the way you did. I think Lindsay Liebro is on her way to being a star. She checks off all the boxes when it comes to making great music - relatable lyrics, a beautiful voice, and soundscapes that catch your ear. She has a sound that mixes all the top genres like pop, folk, and alt. rock to create a universal style for anyone and everyone. When relationships have run their course, it is almost always obvious and almost always unavoidable. The feeling is almost like that of an impending rain storm- inevitable and anxiety inducing, a ‘brace for impact’ kind of feeling. Zach Hood’s newest single “Weatherman” puts all of this into words- metaphors of rain clouds and songless birds swirling through an upbeat pop soundscape disguising heartbreaking lyrics. Hood stated that this song is about his own personal experience in a past relationship. Their relationship was all he had ever wanted, but she slowly fell out of love and changed from the girl she once was. Hood describes the last couple of months with her as an incoming storm, and puts this experience into heartbreaking lyrics. The track was initially teased on TikTok, and fans eagerly awaited its release for months as Hood crafted the final work of art. The song takes listeners through this heartbreaking journey along with Hood, starting from the moment he realized their relationship was coming to a close. “Down” records the memories and desires of the band themselves.  They begin by relishing in the youthful, lively, times of their past- painting a picture they dream of now.  But this imagery is dreamy only because they were.  The greatest feeling of this time, the feeling so greatly missed, isn’t their romanticized struggle; but the hope found in it, the fact that they could only go up from there.  Now, as the title implies, the hope they retain is beginning to point “down”.  Being nostalgic for ideas of the future naturally holds a particular twang of disappointment, but the lyrics describing it never drift towards this dangling pessimism.  Rather, this is a work of revival and finding hope in memories of the past rather than dreams of the future. To reflect the themes of nostalgia and dreaminess found in the lyrics, the song starts off with a distant electric pulse that nearly matches the enchantment of the story about to be told.  The first word of it is “remember”, a fitting introduction used for the majority of these anecdotes.   That beat introduced at the start retains its pace as the story goes on, following a conversational and calm tone.  When it drops, though, it carries a kind of break in emotion.  It is almost as if these memories are a dangerous temptation to give in to, the relief of doing so being overpowering.  The vocalist does an impeccable job of displaying this, skillfully balancing earnest emotions with the adorned tone of pop.  This balance is noticeable even in the general upbeat energy of the song, it could easily slip into melancholy, but that’s never been The Strike’s approach and in a motivational piece like “Down” their ability to create a catchy song no matter the subject matter shines through.
