Gaaren is a ScandiPop trio and they just released their new single “On & On.” This song is about falling for someone you can’t have and being stuck on a loop of hope. It feels like a diary entry, laying all the emotions on the table. The song hits every piece that put the puzzle of unrequited love together. From daydreaming, reality and believing you can be around that person and ignore the deeper feelings you have for them. They combined a fun beat that makes you want to dance with lyrics that have you feeling a bit heartbroken. Love is never easy, especially when you’re in love with someone who only sees you as a friend. It can feel overwhelming being around them, wanting more than what you have. One of the opening lines said “I was dreaming about you and then I started playing pretend.” I’m sure every single person out there has daydreamed about what things could be when we like someone. The bridge in this song stood out to me due to the honesty of it. The first line in that section is “if you want it like this I can do it.” When we love someone who doesn’t reciprocate that, we believe we can just push those feelings down and keep them buried. “On & On” is so incredibly catchy. The chorus is simplistic but it gets stuck in your head right from the first listen. This trio outdid themselves by creating something vulnerable and giving it the ability to make listeners want to jump around. When love makes time and space cease to matter, and every experience is more beautiful, you just want to lay down in that eternal sensation. ORKID’s new release, “Bed of Roses” uses a language of connection and an intoxicatingly romantic sound to portray this very feeling. Using environmental imagery in the first verse, the narrator paints pictures of the lover’s surroundings which they experience together—from the sun to the sky, clouds, a shooting star, and “the veins of our city”. There is a specific intimacy that comes from a shared perception, and it’s an intimacy that the song captures. These words are one lover asking another to watch the world with her. The chorus expresses more timeless togetherness: “don’t care when we’ll be leaving, drive fast speed through the seasons”, further expressing the transcendence of love. It then uses a bed of roses as a metaphor for a sanctuary of their romance. The speaker asks their partner to make a bed of roses for them, and lay in it with them forever. Strumming acoustic and a gentle sliding electric guitar introduce a serene and romantic mood before and during the verse. ORKID’s soft and throaty voice is gentle through the verse and passionately escalates as the chorus begins. Her accent merges with her style of singing, presenting a softer annunciation that compliments the romantic intimacy of the tune. Cheating in relationships is the biggest betrayal ever. It shatters the trust between you two, and leaves a scar on the person that was cheated on forever. The dynamic between you two is never the same whether you try to push past it and try again, separate and decide to become just friends, or never see each other again. The feelings, connection, conversations, everything. What was once a loving, strong relationship with genuine feelings, turns into damage by such deceitful actions. But wait! Add that with some lies and narcissistic traits. Now it’s just one big toxic mess. Catlea has taken this exact experience and put it into a song to share with us titled, “ Lying .” Catlea’s partner has exhausted them so much with it all that they start to think about how much happier they would be if they cheated too! In fact, their ex was accusing Catlea of cheating, just as they were! How insane is that? Ready for this rollercoaster ride? If you say so .” As for the elements of the song, I love how mysterious it first sounds. The beat is also catchy, with an energetic groove that has me swaying along to the rhythm. As the track progresses, the electric guitar and Catlea’s vocals intensify, becoming powerful and intensifying the singers presence. At times, our future can be nebulous. As we grow older, questions about our worth and desires may come into call. Naturally, we are all incessantly running towards an invisible finish line. We attempt to stride with purpose and precision as though we know exactly where we are headed down the itinerary of life. We have our expectations of what our future should look like, how long it should take for us to accomplish our goals, and to quickly discover a passion that resonates with our hearts. And yet, when we fall short, and when the distance to our finish line only seems to stretch further and further outward, we encounter harrowing sentiments of frustration and impatience.“Impaitent” by Starlight Alice is a song about a similar scenario, where we may feel stuck in a certain life scenario, and rather than wait and allow time to take its course, we are impatient. We try to climb our way out of the situation to finally find our purpose, only to fall, and face casualties that only exacerbate our issues. Though the song highlights the impatience we may feel throughout this position, the last few lyrics truly leave listeners with a hint of optimism, a reminder that “as long as I am breathing, it is not the end”. The tempo of this song sounds almost upbeat, and the strings of the guitar played by Luke Potter give the song that hint of country, however, infused with pop as well. Jacob Browne’s voice only seems to add more emphasis to the already impactful lyrics, giving the words more meaning. Presenting the listeners with just how much these lyrics must mean to our singer, Jacob, touching the hearts of any listener who is also going through similar situations– where they may feel impatient for their future, continuously falling and pacing around for something to happen. To me, the lyrics are something I can find myself stewing on, and especially relating to. From a young age, I was always asked questions about my future, and what I wanted in life. Even now, I can’t even seem to answer that question. There were times in my life when I did feel impatient, as the song describes. I wanted to race my way to the finish line just to say I did it and feel like I had accomplished the true meaning of my life. However, just as this song has portrayed, I realized that being impatient would simply aggravate my feelings of stress. I can truly appreciate the expressive lyrics to this song, and I believe that many more people, especially of younger generations, can also connect to the sentiments that this song calls attention to. “Impatient” is a song that I believe people who are facing similar struggles should listen to. Not only will it reduce the vehement emotions of indecision, but it will remind us that we are not the only ones who encounter such harrowing questions in life. Luke Hemmings, best known as the lead singer of the pop/rock band 5 Seconds of Summer, is resurrecting his solo career for the first time since 2021 with his brand new EP, "boy". TRACKLIST I'm Still Your Boy Shakes Benny Close My Eyes Garden Life Close Enough To Feel You Promises Australian artist Luke Hemmings has been in the game since 2011 when he started a YouTube channel with his band mates in 5 Seconds of Summer when he was only fifteen. With his iconic signature eyeliner and sparkly eyeshadow, he not only is a lead singer but a guitarist and songwriter as well. 5SOS’ career kicked off when they were discovered by One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson, in which they began opening for on their “Take Me Home” tour in 2013. In 2021, he started releasing solo music which included his solo debut album, “When Facing The Things We Turn Away From”. Luke continues to make music with 5SOS, but has found a sound that he is able to call his own as well. Let’s explore that sound right now. I'm Still Your Boy Starting with track one, we have "I'm Still Your Boy" which softly introduces us to the project with a beautiful acoustic guitar and gentle vocals from Luke. The song continues to dynamically shift throughout the song, but the chorus is the shining star. The repeated lyrics and long drawn out notes create a cathartic experience. It almost has a classic feel to it, mixed with whimsical sounds like you're living in a fantasy world. Lyrically, what I took away from this song is even though you're not with someone anymore, you still feel like you'll always be theirs. It's a really stunning track and quite an experience, unlike anything anyone else is creating today. Shakes Next we have the lead single released in anticipation for this EP, "Shakes". Continuing the dreamy vibe that seems to be a theme in this project, "Shakes" has a vibey groove that you can't help but move along to. Featuring stunning falsetto vocals in the super catchy hook, "Shakes" is about wanting to be with someone so badly that you can't shake the feelings you have for them, no matter how hard you try. All you want is to be with them, and for them to feel the same way. There's a moment after each hook, where Luke sings "shake" in unison with this beeping synth, and it feels like a heartbeat. It's one my favorite moments in this song. Benny Trucking on with those sad boy themes, we have "Benny". Now, I'm not exactly sure who Benny is in this particular song, but it seems to be about giving your all to someone who never gave you anything back. I've used this word a lot so far, but a total vibe is the best way to describe each track I've heard so far. "Benny" in particular has this nostalgic feel to it, almost like an 80's glam rock. You can hear synths echoing in the background and electric guitar that slides and glides across the chord progression. Close My Eyes "Close My Eyes" is the most upbeat song on this EP; and although it's also the shortest, it is one of my personal favorites for this project. I would say out of all the songs, this one is the most modern pop. I really enjoy the energy behind the production and rhythm in this song. It's a juxtaposition, where the music sounds happy but if you pay attention to the lyrics, it's actually a sad song. "Close My Eyes" seems to be about struggles with mental health, and not being able to close your eyes or else you'll start to see all the bad things that have happened to you in your life. When you go through a lot of trauma, it can be hard to let go. I think this is an amazing song for others who may struggle with these same types of feelings; it makes you feel not alone. Garden Life Out of all the songs on this EP, I feel like "Garden Life" is the most different from the rest. It's still vibey, but it sounds a bit unconventional and very mellow in it's groove. It's not an "easy listening" song and it takes a few listens to really take in the lyrics and the soundscape. The best way I could interpret this song is very dark and deep. I think it might be about being in love with someone who has depression, and you're doing everything to be something good in their life to help them feel better; however, it's hurting you to see them this way. Close Enough To Feel You Continuing those themes of sadness, "Close Enough To Feel You" is about being down in the dumps about an unrequited love. They're still in your life, but it hurts to just be around them knowing that you can't have them. This song has dynamic shifts that ultimately create a highly emotional build. This song has a very rock-forward style and a classic groove to give you a sense of nostalgia. Promises Closing out the EP, we have the longest song "Promises". With a stunning chord progression, heavy reverb and a full, raw instrumentation, this song has a classic and dreamy soundscape that'll take you to another planet. It's such a beautifully written song, both lyrically and sonically. It seems to be about having trouble letting go of someone you love but lost. It didn't end very well, and the fights were just too much; but all you can still think about is being with them. This entire EP is sonically a whole vibe. It's definitely sad boy themed, with lots of mentions of heartbreak and depression. The best way to describe the style is a mixture of dream pop and bedroom pop, with soft rock and some moments of 80s synth. There’s even some psychedelic tones in there. The ethereal soundscapes throughout make you feel like you’re floating on a cloud. It’s the perfect thing to listen to for putting headphones on, closing your eyes and escaping the world for a little while. It’s not anything we’ve really heard from Luke Hemmings before, and I love that he’s able to have this side of him away from 5SOS. His vocals on this EP are softer, more whispery and light than his usual tone. The style is less lyric driven, and more about the overall sound as a whole. It’s truly a detailed, cathartic listening experience that I recommend giving a chance to anyone who hasn’t heard “Boy” yet. Gibson's pleasant voice floats through “Hurricane” like a seamless fog, light and cool. The acoustic track is earthy and sentimental, with yearning dotted between each lyrical note and breath. “Hurricane” pays homage to artists such as Passenger, Ed Sheeran, and Chance Peña, with its folky undertones and ad-libbing ending verse. The combination of Gibson's voice and soft piano notes gives the song a dreamlike landscape. Static can be heard within the verses as if changing songs on an old radio or TV. With slower guitar picking and reverberating drums, the song's buildup is measured, thoughtful, and emotional. “You don't have to wake me up, because I'm not dreaming,” matches the dreamlike melody and nostalgia of the song. Although the song is light with a cool and reflective tone, the lyrics themselves are heavier and filled with longing. With this, “Hurricane” proves to be a deeper inward reflection and an authentic showcase of self. In 2012, Gibson released his debut album, “This is Life,” and his second album in 2021, “Thirty.” The singer-songwriter is known for his indie-pop and soft-rock style, appealing to fans with his raw and authentic music that stems from his roots back when he was busking on Portobello Road and touring. In “Hurricane” this is expressed through modern production elements woven together with his original sound and honest writing. The artist has performed at London venues such as The 100 Club and OMEARA. The latest release by artist Myah, “Now or Never” is an angsty and catchy post-breakup track. The song explores life after separating from someone you loved and how a lot of that love is hard to move away from. “Now or Never” is a great portrayal of the youthful nature of relationships, and how navigating the aftermath of said relationships can make you feel lost and scrambling. While the nature of this song is very blue, the energy it gives off contrasts this emotion and instead is very sonically uplifting. It’s a great thing to do, create a breakup song that doesn’t necessarily sound like a traditional breakup track, and I think Myah has executed this task perfectly. There are a lot of classic alternative elements in “Now or Never” and this contributes to the tension in the lyrical content. You can hear this in the guitar tones chosen for this track and how well they blend with the production style. Myah has such a great voice that you could never grow tired of it. You can even hear this in the background harmonies that bring so much warmth to the track. The chorus is a lot of fun, even if lyrically it’s still very tragic, you can still find yourself jamming out during this section. Myah certainly has an anthem with “Now or Never” and it’s a great introduction to who Myah is as an artist and it leaves you excited to see what else she can do.
