  • Review: "Friends" - Ari Dayan

Traveling from her original scenery and heading straight for the clouds, Ari Dayan brings her listeners “Friends”, a new release with a sensual and daydreamy feeling. It’s a big change from Dayan’s past music, but as she attempts this new vibe, she does it with a captivating power and immense talent. “Friends” deviates from her usual song meanings of learning to rise from the ashes of her past and relationships, takes a step away from the pain of learning from our experiences, and goes into the light by diving into the idea of reciprocated love. It’s sweet and warm, encapsulating a feeling of gentle but passionate emotion and showing us a side of her that craves the comfort of a love that loves her. The song introduces itself to us with a hazy piano feeling, swirling around us and taking us with it on the song’s lyrical journey. With “Friends” Dayan moves away from heartbreak and talks about her belief that someone is falling for her regardless of their words. She states this when she sings, “I know it’s just me/But I don’t believe you when you say that/you’re falling for somebody else”. She’s longing to be the person of someone’s affections, potentially deluding herself with this melodious feeling and saying, “Then hoping is better/than knowing that we’ll just be friends”. It’s comforting and hopeful; the lyrics combine the backing vocals and her stunning, honey-esque voice to create a beautiful atmosphere we can easily get lost in. Ari Dayan has been someone to watch for since her start—her music is stunning and worthy of the highest praises, as seen in her past releases like "Ashley" and "Good Reason". She’s fiery and confident, not afraid to be herself and to share that with her fans. She’s been dancing and performing since her youth, writing songs that capture hearts and hones a style we can’t find elsewhere. Ari Dayan is an icon with inspirations such as Stevie Nicks and Sia but uses her experiences to take that inspiration and make it her own. With “Friends” she enters a new section of her abilities and shows off just a little snippet of how talented she is. Written by Jane Katryn FOLLOW ARI DAYAN:

  • Review: "Reason" - SUNNY.

SUNNY. just released their second-ever single titled "Reason," an electric piece about the bittersweetness of a fresh infatuation. It's about that beginning stage with the person you're interested in and all the uncertainties in that stage. You constantly ask yourself "What are we?" "How do they feel about me?" "Should I make the first move?" It involves all of the little things you do to gain their interest and to show them that you're definitely interested in getting closer to them. Combining light summer vibes with soft vocals, SUNNY. created an exceptionally light-hearted piece about new love. This piece has heavy 80s pop production influences, which SUNNY. owes their inspiration for this style to artists such as Lennon Stella, The Band Camino, and LANY. This song is comprised of a lot of fun sounds, especially with the electric guitar notes towards the end to spice up the melody. The melody is energetic and bubbly and has such an uplifting spirit to it. As for the vocals, Melodie has a very calming voice which matches the level of the melody perfectly. The vocals and melody blend well with the charming lyrics, which talk about being so into this person that you're hoping for any chance that they will return the feeling. Lines such as "got you all in my head" and "got your message on read did you notice?" are all things we experience when we first feel that spark. Overall, this piece is a very fun and light-hearted song that listeners can resonate with when they catch feels. SUNNY. is a duo composed of Melodie and Ben who debuted their music in July of this year. Their first-ever single "Boring People" dropped on July 29 with their latest single "Reason" dropping just recently. They have a bunch of music they're ready to share with the world so stay tuned! • Review: "not over getting over you" - Brooke Stilla

“not over getting over you” is a sweet ballad about the aftermath of a breakup. After breakups, it’s tough to go out into the world. All of the reassurance, the love, all of it is now gone. It’s always hard and you always want to pretend that everything is fine when everything is the furthest thing from fine. And when your ex-partner seems to have forgotten about you and moved on, that just makes your own attachment to them feel even worse, because you’re still caught up in your feelings when the other party in the relationship isn’t. Brooke Stilla uses a sentimental tone to convey her sadness about not getting over a breakup. She uses a wide variety of rhythms and sounds to add different textures to the music, popping textures, smooth textures, and a mixture of the two to make something different, not just the typical after a breakup song. The almost floaty natures is akin to how out of your own mind you get after a breakup, using everything and anything to take your mind off the one thing you can’t stop thinking about. Brooke Stilla is an Australian singer-songwriter who’s bold, sweet, and full of spice. Her zingy pop melodies combined with the soul of R&B, Stilla writes vulnerable lyrics and uses her sweet, rich, and raspy vocals to bring life to the narratives that she’s experienced. Using her personal experiences with self-love, mental health, heartbreak, and empowerment, she engages an audience with her charisma, attitude, and poise. After making her debut on The X Factor Australia, Brooke has shared the stage with artists like Mel B, Throttle, and Eskimo Joe. Brooke Stilla has hardly just begun, and her latest single is just a taste of all that’s to come. Written By Megan Cao FOLLOW BROOKE:

  • Interview: "65 Milligrams" - Cat Calabrese

First off, releasing over 10 singles in a year and a half is literally INCREDIBLE!! And this new chapter with your most recent single “65 Milligrams” did not disappoint, that’s for sure :) Can you take us through the writing process of this new track? Cat: I appreciate that so much, thank you! It’s really cool to look back on when I first set myself on this schedule and to see the progress. I’m so happy you love the new song! It’s one of my favorites and I’m thrilled that people are connecting with it. I received an instrumental demo back in May 2021 for a prospective collaboration. I created the melody around the beat and once I had it in a good place, I started writing. I didn’t set out with the intention of writing about anxiety, but it just started flowing. My favorites songs are the ones that combine upbeat production with heavy hitting lyrics and I wanted to create with that intention. Also, I wanted to write about something real and honest and I wrote based on where my headspace was. The collaboration fell through, but I decided to take the melody/lyrics I had written and bring them to my producer and collaborator, DJ London Bridges, and we created an entirely new vibe which is what you hear now! It just goes to show that sometimes even though you don’t get what you originally planned for, you get something even better! When did performing and songwriting become a passion of yours? Was it something you always knew you wanted to pursue eventually? Cat: Music has always been a huge part of my life. I grew up playing piano and always loved to write. I would play around with writing my own lyrics to melodies of my favorite songs and wrote my first original when I was 13. However, I kept singing a secret from everyone and didn’t start sharing it until a few years ago. I was self-conscious about it for so long even though it was all I wanted to do. I’m so glad I finally was able to move past the fear and tap into the passion that was always pulling at my heart. “65 Milligrams” has been described as a “driving-with-the windows-down track” and I couldn’t agree more! Do you have a favorite song by another artist that gives you that same feeling? Cat: Thank you! And I have so many! One of my favorites to blast is “Heart Attack” by Demi Lovato. I often work on this song in my vocal lessons as well! As someone who is also a huge advocate for mental health awareness, I seriously applaud you for your openness and vulnerability regarding the topic in your music! Did you find it difficult to talk about your personal struggles you’ve endured or was it in a way rewarding or therapeutic? Cat: Thank you so much, I’m so happy to hear that you connect with it! From the beginning, vulnerability and my songs have always been one and the same. Music is where I go to work through issues; this entire journey for me started as a way to work through trauma, and sharing it felt really organic for me. I believe that music can’t be quality without vulnerability. If I can’t be honest through my music, what’s the point? Having that mindset made it natural and easy to tell my truth, and I’m so grateful it’s been received in the way that it has. When people thank me for sharing and tell me that they connect with my message, I know I’m doing something right. If you could collaborate with any other artist, who would you pick and why? Cat: Ariana Grande! Obviously she is an incredible vocalist, but since I’ve started my own music journey, I have a newfound appreciation for her writing ability and how she arranges and produces her vocals. She has such an incredible vision and ear for developing a song and layering complex harmonies and layers. Just to be in the studio with her to watch her mind work would be incredible and I would love to create with her! I can’t wait to see what else this new chapter brings for you!! Any upcoming projects or new music you can talk about? Cat: I can’t wait to share it with you! I have my eye on some collabs that I’ve been manifesting for a while and I am doing all I can to make them happen! I’ve got 2 more singles planned for 2022 and am also working on a larger project that I am so excited about; “65 Milligrams” is the introduction to it and I can’t wait to share the bigger story that it’s a part of! • Review: "It's Not Your Movie" - Abz Winter

Many people nowadays are convinced that they’re the “main character” in life, a sentiment and attitude that is often meant to be empowering but can quickly devolve into toxic self-centeredness when taken too far. In her newest single “It’s Not Your Movie,” Abz Winter bluntly confronts this behavior and expounds upon how it affects those around the propagator. “It’s Not Your Movie” is cathartic in the sense that it gives voice without abandon to the thoughts that–let’s face it–we’ve all had about someone and gives listeners license to call out borderline narcissistic behavior. The song is remarkably well-composed, catching and keeping the listener’s attention from the beginning with striking rock chords, a punk-pop melody and Winter’s phenomenal vocals. Her lyricism is passionate and incisive, directly calling out someone with “main-character syndrome” in lines such as “It’s not your movie/I don’t care what you’re saying” and “You’re really here now just to fill the space,” showing that not only are they not the main character–they are an extra. She then takes the ego check to a point of no return, saying “You’re a plague to us/when will you leave” and “Your stress is too much and you’re no fun/We just wanna let you know you are done.” “It’s Not Your Movie” is the ultimate “check yourself” song, pulling no punches as it forcibly (and refreshingly) removes the rose-colored glasses from the antagonist’s eyes. Abz Winter is a 19-year-old singer-songwriter from the Midlands, focusing on rock, pop, and punk genres with a retro twist and bringing them to life with her uniquely rich and captivating voice. She was nominated as Undiscovered Talent UK 2021 Winner, has been airplayed on BBC Radio 2 and won Artist of The Month BBC CWR Introducing. Winter also has an incredible stage presence and has showcased this on stages such as ITV’s Walk The Line, Next Stage at Godiva 2021, and the Birmingham CG 2022 stage at Victoria Square Birmingham. Most recently she was nominated for ‘Best Pop Act 2022’ by the Birmingham Music Awards. She’s broken and reinvented boundaries within her genres through her distinctive sound and fun-loving nature, and is sure to continue to make waves in the music industry. • Review: "Heart Wont Let Me" - Jake Adler

Written in a moment of weakness within a romantic situation, Jake Adler created "Heart Wont Let Me". The realization that one needs to work on themselves before they can be what is needed for the partner in the relationship. The song portrays the internal push and pull of intrusive thoughts that can torment individuals and fabricate fears and problems within a relationship. Listen to "Heart Wont Let Me" Here Beginning with an upbeat melody the song begins with a staccato sound that creates a solid beat for the song to be based on. Despite the meaning of the song the melodies and overall sound of the song has very upbeat notes to it. The most outstanding aspect of this song however would have to be the lyricism present within the song. Jake has perfectly created an image for the listeners to imagine the situations occurring that created this internal conflict. He incorporates a high level of emotion and vulnerability within the lyrics that create a deeply meaningful song that despite its meaning does not deeply saddened the listeners, but rather uplifts them. Over the course of his career as an artist Jake has accumulated over three million streams across platforms on his music. Hailing from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania he has grown tremendously over the course of his career and accomplished many milestones at the age of 26. Rather than allow these accomplishments to stifle his progress however, he has chosen to reinvent his sound which will be displayed in his third single “Dear You" which will be released on August 12, 2022. • Review: "Melancholic" - Jagger

Jagger recently released this track titled "Melancholic," a piece expressing the deep sadness that she is enduring. This piece includes lines such as "I'm in your arms but I can't feel your touch" and "Just let me be melancholy" to reveal the level of emptiness inside of her. This song is about letting those grim feelings rise to the surface, and letting go of any pressure you put on yourself to suppress those feelings. It's about that moment right before you decide to give up and when you can no longer feel anything besides this deep depression within you. Jagger brings comfort to her listeners who are going through times so difficult that all they are able to feel is the emotion described in this song. She hopes to connect with listeners who feel this way, and to reassure them that their feelings are valid. This piece is broken down into a few main aspects, allowing listeners to experience a very beautiful part of this song. The piano keys are given the spotlight out of all the sounds and instruments in the piece. The keys are strong and provide a comforting tone. As is the same with her voice, Jagger has a throaty, airy sound, which allows for this aura of comfort to come through. Especially in the chorus, the background sounds drop off for a moment, allowing her vocals to be showcased. There is deep emotion in the piano keys, her vocals, and the beats that encapsulate the level of sadness Jagger sings about. Jagger the velvety singer from deeply rooted beginnings in music brings what is seen as the centerpiece of music with a style that is reminiscent 70’s, but with a tone and approach unique to her. Every artist has a start that sparks love for music, and their story is what ultimately influences the art they create. Jagger was just 5 years old when she started singing. The first time she sang a Lady Gaga song for her grandma with a Hannah Montana wig, and pink toy microphone was the moment Jagger came to life as an artist. Singing became a daily occurrence, source of entertainment, and inspiration throughout her childhood summers. Written By Melina Darlas FOLLOW JAGGER:

  • Interview: "Honest (Would It Have Killed You?" - Colaine

Q: ‘Honest (Would It Have Killed You?)’ is so catchy! What is the meaning behind it? Colaine: I wrote this song about being lead on. The classic, “I really like you, but can’t be in a relationship right now” guy that ends up being in a relationship a week later…with someone else. It’s about that crashing feeling of realizing there is no chance and you held onto someone who had no intention of being with you but let you think that they did because they liked the attention or whatever. It hurts a lot and could’ve been avoided if they had just been honest. It would’ve sucked for a few days, then I would’ve been fine, but instead the saga and emotion was dragged out and now it hurts more. I think everyone has experienced this at some point, and I wanted to capture the peak intensity of that feeling. Q: What does the songwriting process look like for you? Colaine: It really looks different every time, however lyrics are always at the forefront. Sometimes I write about something months later when I have clarity on a situation and can see the big picture. Sometimes though, like with this song, I wrote it in the moment. I was peak breakdown after discovering this guy who’d led me on up until very recently at that point had a girlfriend. Through tears and experiencing the worst high I EVER, I opened my notes app and let it all pour out. Two days later I got in the studio with my friend Gabe Smith and told him to turn the auto tune up on the mic and just went for it! Q: Who is one artist you would love to collaborate with? Colaine: Oh God. I would die to write a song with Charli XCX. I think that’s every modern aspiring pop artist/writer girl's dream. Q: What is your favorite part about being an artist? Colaine: I just love creating. I love storytelling. Life is so short and weird and I feel like pop culture is this uniting experience that really connects us all. I love turning an experience into a catchy song that people relate to. Q: What do you like to do when you are not doing music? Colaine: When I’m not making music I like reading spooky books (Stephen King is my fav), watching reality TV shows, going on walks and listening to a podcast. Jersey Shore, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, and Real Housewives of Salt Lake City are the top ones on rotation at my place. Q: What are you most looking forward to for your future in music? Colaine: I am super excited to start doing shows! I am hoping to start performing my songs within the next couple months which really feels like the next step. I can’t wait to bring these songs to life in front of real people! That’s an experience we really can’t take for granted after everything that’s transpired in recent years.
