Brother Bird, otherwise known as Caroline Glaser, has taken flight once again, with her new single “always” off of their sophomore LP another year , out March 8th. The song, an indie-folk ballad, was initially written for television and film placements, but Glaser kept it on the record due to her personal connection with the track. The track talks about growing up, addressing the pains of growing up, and acknowledging that nobody said it would get easier.” A painful ballad that acknowledges the pain of growing up and having to learn how to live as an adult, Glaser tells the audience that “forever is a dark place” but not to give up, saying that they’re “learning it the hard way.” The subtle guitar riff throughout the track allows Glaser’s vocals to take center stage, one that I thoroughly enjoyed listening to. Her tone is so pretty, but along with the subtle harmonies? It was a joy to listen to. Glaser’s vocals allow the listener to really listen to the lyrics, which are emotionally raw and a relatable feeling to all of us as we grow up. Not only that but having the track be guitar-led also complimented Glaser’s vocals well. It’s a simple guitar riff throughout the song, and while other instruments do pop up around the track, particularly between the chorus and verses, the guitar is an excellent addition to the production of “always.” With Glaser’s and the stripped-back production, it creates a great song to listen to. Glaser started off doing covers on YouTube, getting recognized by the Manchester Orchestra for a cover of a song by them that she did. Mae Stephens explores her personal experience with ADHD and celebrates it in her newest single. The eponymous track shares her ideology that “disorder” is not the correct word to describe her. For her entire life, she has felt that she has been “treading water” in her own brain, well aware that she learns differently than others. But now, rather than viewing this as a negative trait, she perceives it as a positive attribute to her personality. Throughout the track, Stephens describes what it is like to have a constant flow of new hyper-fixations and how it feels to be overstimulated. Nevertheless, she refuses to believe that disorder is an accurate term to describe her. In the second verse, she picks apart the acronym, agreeing that the words “attention”, “deficit,” and “hyperactive” accurately describe her. However, when she gets to “disorder,” she rejects this idea. Stephens’ ingenious inclusion of this element to the production creates another extraordinary layer to the song. Maybe it’s pop gold. From the first note, pop lovers are drawn to this song. Pair that with Jess’s voice and you have an instant hit on your hands. The first verse begins “Thought it was going nowhere” which lays the groundwork for this song that deals with the all-too-familiar thought pattern of a person who can sense their falling for someone and wondering how and when it happened. As a sucker for love as well as love songs, this resonates with me because the lyrics evoke the feelings of love, stating “You make me feel like it’s a weekend on a Wednesday when we sleep in.” Although this song is laced with “maybes”, literally, the lyrics still allow the listener to feel what the narrator is feeling with examples and the thought process that they’re going through. She lists out all of the possibilities “Maybe it’s love, maybe it’s lust, maybe we’d last long enough to lose the trust.” She continues “Maybe it’s wrong, maybe we’ll both get hurt”. But she also acknowledges “Maybe we’re afraid of the chance that we could work.” So, at the base of all  the doubt is the realization (and fear) that the relationship could work, and that, perhaps, that is the most fear-inducing alternative. Although the song see-saws between wondering if it’s love or nothing, it does end on a more optimistic note with the line “Maybe it’s love” being sang once again as the guitar closes the single. Getty Images Last Sunday, we all tuned in to the biggest event of the year so far: the Puppy Bowl. While the main event was riveting, we all also tuned in to the Superbowl halftime performance. It’s an American staple (we all remember when Rhianna announced her pregnancy last year). This year, Usher took the stage. While Usher isn’t the most relevant right now, that doesn’t mean he’s stopped working. Having 30 years in the industry is a lot of experience, and it showed throughout his performance. Super Bowl halftime performances are usually a mash-up of a singer’s greatest hits, and Usher has plenty of hits to go around. Having performed for over 30 years but mainly being popular from the late 2000s to the early 2010s, Usher was a huge surprise, at least to me, when selected as the headliner for this year’s halftime show. That didn’t mean he disappointed, though–it was quite the opposite. Usher’s throwback performances highlighted a sense of nostalgia that proves that throwbacks never really get old. With a tracklist that transports you back to the 2000s, you either really liked the tracklist or really didn’t, depending on one thing: it was only Usher’s throwbacks. Personally, I’m a huge fan of throwbacks, and to hear songs that I heard throughout my childhood, like “Yeah!” and “Confessions Part II,” was really enjoyable. Not only that, his vocals were stellar on each track. So while the tracklist didn’t feature anything new, it did its job of making people have a great time. One track I wish we had heard was “Somebody to Love” with Justin Bieber, but Usher brought in plenty of other guests to fill the space. The nostalgia train continued with these guests, with Usher bringing out guests like Alicia Keys, H.E.R., Lil’ Jon, and Ludacris. Hearing Keys singing “If I Ain’t Got You” with Usher harmonizing in the background was one of the show's main highlights, even if Keys’ voice cracked, as that was one of my favorite songs when I was younger and she nailed the rest of the song. And while H.E.R. was mainly featured on guitar, her presence alone brought so much energy to the set. Finally, my favorite moment of the night featured Lil’ Jon and Ludacris for their verses for “Yeah!”. Hearing all of Usher’s guests kill it on their parts of the show just added to the magic of it. Now, do I think that Usher had the most incredible halftime show and that this was an instant classic? No, but I think it’s definitely up there on my favorites. I think it ultimately depends on whether or not one really likes throwbacks. With this many hits too, it’s clear that Usher was a force to be reckoned with in the 2000s, whether or not you were a fan of the halftime performance. While nostalgia isn’t enough to carry a performance, the setlist, vocals, and guests set Usher up for success., leading to one of the best halftime performances in years. “Stuck in the Middle” by KRYSTOF is a vulnerable confessional that details the struggles of trying to find yourself and build self-worth. While it’s difficult and takes a while to get to a point where you’re content, KRYSTOF reminds the listener that it’s worth it as he’s learning to “love just a little” and “laugh just a little,” which are things that make life worth living. As a listener, I felt inspired to face the challenges presented in my life head on, and to not wallow in sadness, and I think it would have the same effect on anyone who can relate.  The track balances gentle guitar instrumentals with a heavy electropop production style. The soft guitar plucking during the verses create a vulnerable tone, and the minimal production during these moments shifts the focus to the lyrics. Layers of synth and drums add emotion and energy to the chorus, which has a powerful, anthemic feel. The juxtaposition of the raw, acoustic elements with the polished electronic components mirrors the contrast between vulnerability and strength that KRYSTOF explores in his lyrics. The dynamic shifts in the instrumentation mirror the ebb and flow of life's challenges and triumphs. This along with the engulfing synths that added a dreamy element is what I believe made My Felicity stand out in today's music scene that’s often overflowing with new releases Sophia Sheth is an up and coming teen artist from Chicago who is quickly becoming known for her unique sound. She is carving a spot out for herself, not only as a singer, but also as a murky talented artist that writes, conproduces and performs. She showcased these talents on My Felicity and also on her single Sooner or Later that was released December 22, 2023. One of the toughest things about grieving a relationship is the realization that this person you wanted the world with is just not meant for you. For whatever reason you have decided to part ways, it wasn’t in fate’s cards. Sometimes this understanding comes after you have already tried to put your pieces together, just to find that there are gaps where you don’t line up. myah’s newest release “everything” puts this very feeling into heartbreaking lyrics and instrumentals. She sings about thinking her partner was supposed to be her whole world (her everything, hence the title), but that just was not the case. The song itself is simplistic, allowing her emotive voice to be the main focus on this track. Her lyrics are set up in a conversational tone, addressing the first verse to her past lover by starting with “Hey, you’re on my mind”. This allows the listener to feel even more connected to her and her pain, living the experience with her. Her frustration at this event is evident in her chorus, with the second time it comes around being filled with swelling harmonies and pulsing drum beats. She sings, “Damn, I’m surprised / I thought you were my everything / & I can't read your mind / I thought you were my everything / Yeah damn it’s a lie”, the beginning of each line being punctuated by her vocals. She closes out the song with a stripped down version of the bridge, truly driving home her pain and her point of view. She sings, “I found it all in the familiarity / Took you aside you know I needed clarity / Fall behind its there, right in front of me / I miss your laugh this silly serendipity”. Heartbreaking, in my opinion. myah was born and raised in southern Florida, and has reached over 1,000 monthly Spotify streamers. She has two other tracks on Spotify, her original single ‘hide’ (click here for Pop Passion’s review of that track!), and a cover of Louis The Child’s song “Better Not” ft. Wafia. In this cover, she turns an upbeat and electronic song into an indie-pop ode, showing her style of music and writing. Her vibes are similar to that of Olivia Rodrigo’s ballads and Gracie Abrams’s album “Good Riddance”; touching lyrics and a simplistic soundscape. Oda Loves You has already made a splash into 2024 with three single releases. Her latest track, "House of Cards," just dropped on February 2nd. The dark, dance pop track is reminiscent of artists like Sia and Tate McRae. Through the song, Oda Loves You sings about taking risks, fights, and falling apart. Backing the lyricism is an infectious pop production that had me dancing around in my seat. If you love a moody pop track that tackles difficulty in life and relationships, this one's for you. This was my first taste of Oda Love You's music, and I am excited to dive deeper into the rest of her discography. "House of Cards" by Oda Love You begins with a dramatic synth introduction, before it builds into an upbeat pop track, as she sings about feeling fragile and a relationship on the verge of falling apart. In the infectious chorus, she sings the refrain, "It's a house of cards / As the queen of hearts / I don't break when I fall." With lyrics like "You better hold you breath / Before we collapse" and "Stop hitting the wall / It's a house of cards," Oda Love You paints the picture of a relationship that is on the brink of collapsing, as they both make missteps and try to keep them together. The song is completed with a dark, alt pop production that guided the track along and kept me hooked from the start. Norwegian pop singer-songwriter Oda Loves You began her career with eight years in Los Angeles, working with producers and performing weekly at "House of Blues" on Sunset Strip. Her first EP Champagne released in 2018, and she has been improving her danceable pop sound ever since.
