- Review: "All My Friends H8 U" - Gabby Orr
Gabby Orr’s lates t single is a fiery anthem that consists of cheeky lyrics and a powerful production. “All My Friends H8 U” details a time when she was dating someone that was clearly toxic for her, but she ignored all her friends’ warnings. Throughout the verses, the song details an unhealthy dynamic where her partner was a ticking time bomb. Orr never knew if she was going to get them in a good mood where they treated her right, or if they were going to blow up and tear her down. This person clearly knew how to manipulate her to stay by saying just the right things when they would take it too far. Orr’s friends saw right through this and hated her partner, but she would ignore them because she was blinded by her infatuation. In the chorus, she reveals the hook: “All my friends hate you// And I know I should too// Can’t change who you are// And that’s the worst part// All my friends hate you// Nothing left to lose// You’re so bad for my heart// Yeah it broke from the start.” Orr has begun to see the darker side of this person and has concluded they were just born to act this way. They are inherently manipulative and emotionally abusive, and there is nothing she can do to change this. She realizes that they were doomed from the start and that this person is bad for her. She broke her own heart for falling for their type, and only wishes that she had listened to her friends. “All My Friends H8 U” is a cathartic release for not only Orr, but also for any listener that has undergone the same treatment by someone that they thought loved them. It is incredibly honest and can be eye-opening for those that may be stuck in this kind of toxic relationship, making it an unforgettable track for every single listener. “All My Friends H8 U” utilizes a fiery pop-rock production to emphasize the angsty lyrics sung throughout. The song begins with Orr’s muffled lyrics singing, “all my friends hate you.” Her voice reverberates as a slow electric guitar is strummed with the vocal effect being repeated. As the verse starts, the guitar briefly cuts out, before returning with the synth beats. The production maintains this instrumentation through the verse while Orr’s compelling vocals guide the audience through the candid lyrics. When the chorus hits, the production explodes with the introduction of the energetic drums paired with the electric guitar and bass. As the song transitions into the second verse, the music returns to the original production, maintaining a steady structure of the track. After the powerful second chorus, the bridge mellows the song one last time to only the soft guitar riff and Orr’s airy vocals. Subtly, the synth beats begin the build in the background as the listener anticipates the final explosion back into the chorus. At the end of the track, the song fades out with only the guitar, ending the song in a classic pop-rock fashion. “All My Friends H8 U” is the perfect song to blast after a messy break-up that contains an infectious beat that is impossible to not want to dance along to. Gabby Orr is a singer-songwriter from Ohio, now based in Nashville. In 2018, she released her first single, “Unseen.” Since her debut, she has released several singles, with “All My Friends H8 U” as her first release of 2023. In July 2022, she released her four-track debut EP, Even Good Things Will End. Orr’s music is a blend of “noir beats, airy vocals, and punchy lyricism” that beautifully encapsulates her personal experiences in an unforgettable manner. She has showed no signs of slowing down and continues to release relatable, yet catchy music that continues to draw in new devoted fans. Written By Karlee Skipper FOLLOW GABBY:

- Interview: "HBD!" - Zachary Booth
Congratulations on the release of "HBD!" Can you talk about the inspiration behind the song? Zachary: We’ve all had relationships that eventually grow apart, but when the “Happy Birthday” texts stop after twelve years, it’s pretty jarring! I wrote this track after that moment happened and I was feeling the complexity of what that means for a friendship. What advice would you give to listeners who can relate to the feeling of losing touch with someone they were once close to? Zachary: 1. Write a revenge song so you at least get something creative out of it. 2. Be happy thinking that you both served your purpose in each other’s lives for that time. Maybe it will never be the same, but that doesn’t mean the relationship is over! How does songwriting and music help you to process difficult circumstances in life? Zachary: Songwriting is a crucial part of my healing process. My songs are like time capsules for me: Everything I write about is currently happening. So really, it feels like the best way to express my raw emotions and then let it go. The best part is when a song is released and I get feedback from listeners that can relate. It helps me just as much as it helps them. Who are your biggest musical inspirations? Zachary: I’ve been inspired vocally, lyrically, and musically by many artists since I was young. Rex Orange County, Tori Kelly, Daniel Caesar, and Billie Ellish are a few of them. What kind of impact do you want to make on the world with your music? Zachary: My mission as a musician is to change how society is equipped to handle mental health crises. After being diagnosed with PTSD in 2020, my focus has surely changed. I want to share the message that healing is the most important journey. This song is featured on your upcoming EP! What can listeners expect from this project? Zachary: My upcoming EP, which is coming later this summer, is different than anything I’ve ever released. There are many different genre influences that will keep listeners intrigued. HBD! sets the tone for the new direction that I’m going in - an upbeat, summer vibe. Hoping you find your “song of the summer” with these songs. Interviewed By Tessa Brainard FOLLOW ZACHARY BOOTH
- Review: "pink moon spring" - Belle Shea
There’s a lot of spiritual meaning behind the pink moon. The pink moon falls during spring; this season is symbolically synonymous with rebirth after enduring winter - when the year and most living things meet their end. It's also believed that the moon gets its name from the first pink flowers of the spring, which further solidifies the notion of rebirth. But the position of the pink moon we had this past April provides additional connotations. This moon was positioned in Libra: the zodiac sign of harmony and beauty. Libra is ruled by the planet Venus - Venus is all about partnership and connection. When this is all taken into consideration, it makes Belle Shea's latest single, "pink moon spring", a beacon for a budding love. Listen to "pink moon spring" by Belle Shea here. The pop track “pink moon spring” stylistically reminds me of Taylor Swift’s “Delicate” with its fresh synth opening that gradually evolves into a grand, orchestral atmosphere. However, Shea ensures that acoustic guitar strings are the star of the atmosphere she creates. And the meaning behind “pink moon spring” is vastly different, too; it’s a metaphor for how sweet the act of falling in love with someone is and can be (and should be for that matter). The single opens with Shea stating, “We’re a different kind of spring” before the song envelopes listeners in light synths as the first verse continues. Within this verse, we’re treated to wonderful imagery that showcases the affection experienced in a budding love and how it doesn’t feel like the love we’ve experienced before. The following verse embraces this new experience with open arms before it builds up to the chorus. In the chorus, the synths quiet down while the acoustic strings become the focal point as Shea expresses how the anticipation for a love like this exceeds what we could imagine because “it’s gonna feel brand new”. It will reinvent how we perceive and show love. The third verse encapsulates what partnership under the pink moon in Libra feels like as the song blossoms into the orchestral atmosphere. We’re “[m]arking time in heartbeats / That sound as steady as dancehall drums” - this new romance is balanced under Libra which helps it thrive since neither partner is fighting for power within it. But I especially love Shea’s vocals in the fourth verse that lead into the bridge and the song’s end. Her voice is rich with expression, perfectly capturing the wonder and surprise of finally having this experience. Ultimately, “pink moon spring” helps love skeptics envision what a blossoming love looks like while validating the sweet, innocent experience of those actively falling in love with their romantic interest. Florida native turned New York local, Belle Shea, is a singer and songwriter currently based in Brooklyn. The artist has been playing guitar and writing music for as long as they can remember. Even opening for the funk-based band, Dumpstaphunk, as a solo artist in New Orleans at the age of 15. Shea’s debut album The Art of Years was released in 2020 and features multiple piano ballads and guitar-laden singles that showcase the range of their emotional and vocal range. On top of being the latest northeast musical sensation, the impressive artist has even written and performed abroad in western Europe, too. But with a sound like Shea’s, it’s not hard to imagine why. If you’ve enjoyed Belle Shea’s latest single as much as I have, show them some virtual love in the form of streams, likes, and follows. Written by Giavanna Gradaille FOLLOW BELLE SHEA:
- Review: "In My Head" - NewDad
NewDad is back with their latest single, "In My Head." The track is the first we've heard from the band since the release of their single, "ILY2," in September 2022. It's a fiery, unforgettable reminder of NewDad's fresh, unique sound. "In My Head" addresses feelings of inner turmoil and struggling with anxiety as the lead singer, Julie Dawson, delivers the lyrics, “I'm buried under blankets / Descending into madness / And there's no escape from the thoughts burned in my brain." Keeping things real and honest, "In My Head" also dives into the feelings that surround emotionally unavailable relationships and being isolated. "In My Head" is full of ethereal energy, being driven by grungy guitars and Julie's otherworldly, mysterious vocals. Julie carries a light, mellifluous melody, floating over a kaleidoscope of reverb and distorted guitar licks. Though the lyrics feel heavy in certain places, the music for "In My Head" remains lighthearted and airy, showcasing the brighter sound NewDad is moving toward. The band often attributes their sound to their influences, The Cure and Pixies, forming a style that will resonate with either of those fanbases. "In My Head" in particular also sounds reminiscent to Cults and their song, "Most Wanted." Leaving much to chance, indie four-piece, NewDad, gained their unusual (but nevertheless fun) moniker from a random name generator. The Galway-formed band made their unforgettable debut with their EP, Waves, featuring a dark and stormy sound intertwined with beautiful moments. Giving a subtlety and authenticity to their sound, Julie's songwriting effortlessly weaves together inspirations from personal relationships and references to literature and cinema. As NewDad moves in a new direction, their music is becoming brighter and infuses elements of pop into their indie rock sound. If you're an indie pop/rock enthusiast, be sure to check out NewDad and "In My Head" immediately. Written By Cheyenne Johnson FOLLOW NEWDAD:
- Review: “the road back” - Louis Pax
The truth can often set you free. Louis Pax speaks to this in their newly released single “the road back”, a song about drifting away from someone special yet questioning how much of the relationship was real. Whether it be an old friend, romantic partner, or someone whose presence still lingers, many can likely relate to this complex emotion, wondering if you held as much significance in someone else’s life as they did in yours. The song begins by saying “Take me back to the start”, something many of us would do if given the option, rewinding our mistakes and uncovering the real reason why a relationship had to end. Beginning with beachy, rock guitar, the first verse transitions into a stripped-back, vocoder-driven chorus, emphasizing the song’s main message of longing and heartbreak. The second verse introduces a live-sounding drum beat and intentional pauses, creating a jam-session-type energy, similar to what you’d see at a concert. The bridge offers these cool ascending and descending “firefly-sounding” notes, giving the music an energetic yet contemplative feel. I appreciated how the production dials back after the bridge, leaving only Oscar’s voice, helping to release the song’s built-up momentum. Besides the live-sounding instruments (ex. Cymbals crashing towards the end), vocal delays and raw, vocal delivery further add to the “basement concert” energy, reminding me of artists like “Munn”, infusing an upbeat, band production with heartfelt lyrics. Originally Royal Prospect, the three-member pop band (Oscar, Gustav, and Hanes Tingford) released their first EP “Watching Your World” in 2015 and the EP “Spanish Rain” last year, amongst numerous successful singles. Featuring up-tempo, “twinkling”, Lumineers-inspired production, the group experiments with genre-crossing sounds (featuring electronic, jazz, and even funk elements), in addition to their mainly indie-rock instrumentation. From the folksy track “Last Letter” to the ballad, “Whisper a sound”, they fully stepped into their distinct sound with the song “Lights Out” (2019), using cinematic violins, layered choruses, and rock drum beats. The best way I can describe their music is the moment when a movie’s protagonist reaches a pivotal breakthrough, straddling the line between internal strife and positive, personal change. I am excited to see what else they have in store, especially with their upcoming EP! Written By: Conner Pettit FOLLOW LOUIS PAX:
- Review: "Spellbound" - Giorgia Bortoli
Photographer: Jacqueline Mckenzie Have you ever been stuck in a cycle of breaking up and making up? In “Spellbound”, Giorgia Bortoli details being in a toxic relationship due to what feels like a terrible and never-ending cycle. The song continues and follows the singer into finding her power and manifesting the best life she can live, essentially breaking the "spellbound” curse of being in a bad relationship and following her own path. These self-empowering and vulnerable lyrics are backed up with a head-nodding melody and gorgeous vocals. All in all this track is cool, catchy, and has amazing lyrics which is why you have to give this song a listen. Strong vocals, a disco rhythm, a catchy melody and synths galore create one of the best pop songs of the summer. “Spellbound” has the same baddie lyrics and energy as Lizzo with the danceable and electronic elements of Kylie Minogue. Although the single may seem dark and like a breakup ballad due to the initial lyrics and slower and more soulful soundscape at the beginning, it quickly flips your expectations by turning into an incredibly fun disco jam with absolutely stunning synths. Overall, this is the next summer bop that you need to add to your playlist, it will have you dancing and feeling like your best confident self. Giorgia Bortoli is a singer/songwriter from Liverpool. Her music is inspired by and covers topics such as fatphobia, body positivity, love, and loss. She released her debut track in June 2022 titled, ”Summer Body” which is a pop song with an abstract synth-pop groove. “Spellbound” is her second single, which she released nearly a year later. - Review: "Where Would You Drive?" - Nieri
I have to imagine Nieri wrote his indelible, latest single "Where Would You Drive" with strobe lights and fog machines in mind. If not, he miraculously created the perfect companion to the club staples. There's the thunderous bassline, calling to mind the warped club-pop of the early '10s, imbuing the single with a dark gloss. More starkly luminescent than colorfully vibrant, the whirling production blurs the dancefloor into a warped cosmos of electropop intoxication. Synths lurch and throb, like they're halfway between crashing and transcending. For all the dizzying motion, Nieri's vocals remain startlingly centered and clear. That is until the bridge, where his voice is coated in a metallic filter, as though merging with the electronic production. The turmoil doesn't just loom overhead, it envelops him entirely. "Where Would You Drive" asks its subject to meet on the same page, though it begins in entirely separate books. "A letter on an empty bed," sets the scene in separation. Whatever this letter had to say, it only served to muddy the waters. Nieri cuts through in a demand to communicate—whether that results in clashing or mending. "I'm not here and you're not listening," captures the displacement at the heart of "Where Would You Drive?" As Nieri's voice loops on the last word in the titular question, it warps. At first, it's an attempt to reach this person: where do you go from the breaking point? As the question lingers, though, it becomes a call to action. There's no solution in escape. Born in Milan, Italy, the now LA-based artist Nieri has a unique and universal vision for pop music. His electrifying songs find a surprising humanity in their electronic gloss. The authenticity of his self-expression and willingness to explore his experiences through the vehicle of dancepop elevates his incredible sound to unique heights. In 2022, Nieri released his debut EP, Starshine , which brought the artist to new horizons with its high-energy bops. "Where Would You Drive?" releases as the lead single for his sophomore project, yet to be detailed at the time of this review. Performing on larger stages, reaching wider audiences, and catching the attention of bigger names, Nieri is undeniably a dancepop star on the rise. Written By Andy Mockbee FOLLOW Nieri:

- Review: "Baggage" - Bishop Briggs
Bishop Briggs boldly confesses her inner demons in her latest single, “Baggage.” The track contains vulnerable lyrics that detail her personal struggles and heartaches—remnants from previous traumas that make her less than perfect. Rather than trying to hide her baggage, she embraces her humanity, including the dark past that people often feel they need to bury. In the chorus, she proudly proclaims “That’s my baggage// This shit gets hard to manage// I’m carrying a casket// There’s no other way.” She admits that carrying the amount of baggage she has is exhausting, and she is tired of hiding it away for the sake of a stranger’s comfort. She is unashamed of her past because it makes her who she is today. She continues with the lyrics, “My heart’s so calloused// I’m broken, bruised, and damaged// Gave up on feeling balanced.” Her past is riddled with grief, pain, and scars. But, she has not given up yet, and she knows she never will. Instead of letting her sorrow consume her, she has rewritten it in a manner that empowers her and showcases her normal human emotions. These profound lyrics are a comfort to listeners that are also haunted by their grim past and are afraid to let their trauma see the light of day. Instead, Briggs reassures them that they are not alone and that their baggage is a part of them. Those that truly matter to them will stick around despite the messy imperfections that come with them and love them through it. “Baggage” is an empowering track that emphasizes Briggs overwhelming ability to relate to her listeners and her outstanding songwriting talent. “Baggage” is a dynamic track with a unique production that accentuates Briggs’s phenomenal vocal range and genre-bending skills. The song kicks off with an accordion that immediately showcases the track’s individualistic style. When the verse begins, the accordion mutes and is replaced by a deep bass paired with a piano in the background. Briggs’s voice has a slight rasp to it that enhances the soulful tone of the track. In the pre-chorus, high notes and a tambourine are introduced, while she harmonizes with herself, adding an additional layer to the song. In the first half of the chorus, the beat mutes and is replaced by a keyboard that is reminiscent of the 80s, emphasizing the lyrics, before returning for the second half. In addition, a bass drum and unique synth sound effects subtly pick up as they lead into the post-chorus. At this point, these synth sounds intensify while vocal effects are added that take the listener by pleasant surprise. Then, the accordion makes a brief appearance, before muting again as the second verse kicks off. In this verse, Briggs’s raspy vocals stress the heavy emotions, signifying the authenticity of the lyrics. When the second pre-chorus hits, high pitched synth sounds can just audibly be heard as it builds into the intense chorus. The strong production returns for the chorus and leads into the extended post-chorus. Rather than a traditional bridge, Briggs opts for a unique break in the song that shifts the production. She takes this moment to astonish the audience with her heavenly falsettos while the production contains only the accordion before returning to the full production for the final chorus. At the end, the snare drum utilizes a drum roll that signifies the last few lines before the outro where Briggs showcases her outstanding falsettos. Overall, the complex track highlights her impressive vocal range that can effortlessly sing anything from upbeat pop to soulful R&B and everything in between. Her ability to convey intense emotions through her vocals alone is unmatched and proves that she deserves to be the world’s next big superstar. Bishop Briggs was born to Scottish parents in London and was raised in Japan and Hong Kong. After graduating high school, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue her music career. She spent her time performing at any and every venue in the city, before she was discovered in a small hole-in-the-wall venue by a former A7R representative, giving Briggs her big break. In 2016, she released her debut track, “Wild Horses.” The single went on to reach #1 on Spotify’s US Viral Chart and #2 On Spotify Global Viral 50 charts. Her follow-up single, “River,” peaked at #3 on the Alternative radio, received a platinum RIAA certification, and has over 680 million global streams. She has headlined her own tour and opened for prolific artists, such as Coldplay, Bleachers, Kaleo, and alt-J. Her single, “REVOLUTION,” is on the NHL 23 Soundtrack and her song, “Lessons of the Fire,” is the lead track for the Netflix original series, Devil In Ohio. Her new EP, When Everything Went Dark, is set for release on June 23, 2023. Most recently, on May 17, 2023, she was crowned the winner of The Masked Singer Season 9, where she performed as the Medusa Mask. - Review: "complacent" - palmboy
When we are young, we are told how special we are by the adults around us. As we get older, that feeling of happiness is shattered when we compare ourselves to others. I speak from experience, as I find myself doing this all the time. If you’re like me, we need to remember that wherever we are in our walks of life should be celebrated. Everyone’s story moves at its own pace. In his new alternative pop/rock song, “complacent,” palmboy sings about embracing a feeling that’s often viewed negatively. We all deserve to be proud of our accomplishments and how far we’ve come. One aspect of the song that I enjoyed was the instrumentation. The electric guitar gives it a nostalgic 2000’s feel. It sounds like you’d hear it on One Tree Hill . It would play in the background of one of the intense scenes. As for the lyrics, I liked the contrasting feelings in the verses and the chorus. In the verses, palmboy sings about not feeling special and having the devil on his shoulder because he is not happy with where he is at in life. In the chorus, he has left his problems on the pavement. There is a feeling of relief, as he has become happy with where he’s at. The lesson to be learned here is that you shouldn’t push yourself too hard. Your younger self would be proud of where you’re at today! Palmboy (AKA Nick Sadler) currently lives in Los Angeles. “Complacent” is his first release of 2023. If you want to hear more of him, I recommend “Spaceman.” Released in 2022, this song is about being dissatisfied with life and wanting to start over someplace new. You will love its bright instrumentation and vocals. His other 2022 single, “NFT,” (Nice F**cking Try) is another upbeat track about removing toxic people from your life. Palmboy has done some great work so far. I enjoyed reviewing his music, and I can’t wait to hear what else he has in store. - Review: "love again?" - Sapphire
“love again?” is a heartfelt track taken straight out of Sapphire’s personal journal. The song consists of honest lyrics that detail the delicate moment after a break-up when you find someone new. This new person is sweet and exciting, and they are the person you always wanted, but never had. Sapphire guides the listener through her experience with this feeling, and how her hurtful past has not left her jaded. Instead, her new partner makes her feel comfortable and happy. She starts the chorus by asking the question, “can you show me how to love again?” She then goes on to tell this person exactly how they make her feel—she feels safe and she “hasn’t shed a tear just yet.” The chorus then ends with the hook as a statement, rather than a question. Sapphire tells her lover that she feels all these positive emotions “because you showed me how to love again.” The parallel in the chorus between the question at the beginning and the definitive statement at the end emphasizes her certain knowledge that this person is right for her. They treat her in the way that she deserves, and not like the men in her past. After losing her trust, she fell in love with someone that reassured her that she can be loved unconditionally. The beautiful track is a poetic masterpiece that highlights Sapphire’s impeccable songwriting talent through the vulnerable imagery. Sapphire effortlessly pulls on the heartstrings of listeners with the sentimental lyrics and the ethereal production in “love again?” The sweet ballad begins with unique synth sound effects before transitioning into the piano led verse. Sapphire’s angelic vocals guide the listener through the vulnerable lyrics with a soft violin playing in the background. In the pre-chorus, the violin mutes and the piano notes become staggered. A subtle guitar is introduced that draws emphasis on the build up into the chorus. When the chorus hits, the electric guitar becomes more prominent while the piano takes the back seat. In the second verse, the guitar and the piano remain, as the violin returns to the background. In the transition between the pre-chorus and the second chorus, the song introduces the steady drum beat and bass that brings out the full production. In the background, Sapphire’s flawless voice harmonizes with herself, further enhancing the whimsical element of the track. This leads into the bridge where the song reaches its emotional climax. In the first line of the final chorus, the song reduces to only the synth bass and vocals, drawing focus on the lyrics, before the song explodes back into the full production. The song ends with another run through of the bridge that fades into the unique synth sound effects found in the beginning, perfectly wrapping up the track in the beautiful manner it began. “love again?” is an unforgettable track that showcases Sapphire’s phenomenal vocals and innate ability to captivate audiences. Sapphire is a singer-songwriter from London. She has been writing music for as long as she can remember, and she started her official musical journey by posting covers on YouTube. Her music is inspired by a great range of music, from legendary artists such as Carly Simon and Joni Mitchell, to modern-day pop superstars, like Sabrina Carpenter and Gracie Abrams. In 2017, Sapphire released her debut single, “Turn The Music Loud.” Over the years, she has released over a dozen singles, one full length album, and three EPs. She has been able to work with fellow artists such as Cashy Bear and Roy Kerr. Additionally, she worked with dance producer, Alan Walker, on her 2019 single, “Unity (Acoustic).” Sapphire continues to write and release music that are authentically who she is, and she shows no signs of slowing down.
