- Review: "thanks!" - davvn
davvn’s latest single is an anger-fueled anthem that uses cheeky lyrics and a high energy production to expose a toxic ex-partner. “thanks!” is not about thanking them for all the love they shared, but a sarcastic way to acknowledge all the pain, anger, and sorrow they have caused. The words carry a heavy amount of resentment for the toxic person that treated them terribly. Through the use of detailed imagery and vulnerable lyrics, the band exposes this behavior. In the chorus, band member, McCall, sings, “Thanks for acting like it’s charity to even want me// Never gave compliments// Just hits to my confidence.” These words cut like knives, exemplifying the full extent of the damage done. However, McCall flips the script when she finishes up the chorus with, “So thanks for making breaking up feel so easy.” Although this person played games with her mind, it opened her eyes to just how awful they were—making leaving them easier than she had thought was possible. “thanks!” is an infectious track that acts as a cathartic release for both the band and listeners. “thanks!” is a pop-punk masterpiece that wastes no time in kicking it into high-gear. The track begins with McCall’s muffled vocals singing two lines from the chorus paired with an electric guitar. At the end of the second line, the track switches to the verse with the vocals unmuted. The steady beat in the verse pulls focus into McCall’s gorgeous vocals and the clever lyrics. The verse has synth sound effects that are reminiscent of 80s/90s pop, showcasing davvn’s famous genre blending. Then, the chorus returns with the full production of guitars and drums, continuing the angsty pop-punk genre that McCall was born to sing. Throughout the track, the listener can hear the anger in her voice and the passion from the band. “thanks!” is another outstanding addition to davvn’s discography that further cements their future as the next big pop-punk band. davvn, pronounced “dawn”, is a pop-punk duo consisting of members, McCall and Mike. In 2018, they made their debut with their Sleeping Lion collaboration, “Felt Something”. The following year, they released another collaboration “faded on you” featuring PNK FME. L E A has joined forces with alternative emo artist, Bemo Rouge, to create an infectious new single. “FTS (Sick of This)” describes the difficulties of navigating life, specifically as an artist breaking into the alternative music scene. L E A expresses the feelings of wanting to prove yourself to those who have always doubted you, while fighting an internal battle, financially and mentally. However, the song contains uplifting lyrics about rejecting the negativity and believing in yourself. The most outstanding lyric is found in the pre-chorus, when they sing, “I know you saw me last year// Now I’m finally here// Watch me fucking make it.” Despite all the downsides that the industry has to offer, L E A has recognized that she has made a name for herself. - Review: "Not A Problem" - Estella Dawn
Estella Dawn has the natural talent to convey honest vulnerability in her songwriting while maintaining a sense of confidence that radiates throughout the track. With “Not A Problem”, Dawn exemplifies this reflective storytelling by expressing the somber thoughts that wrestle in her mind. A major theme within the track is not wanting to admit weakness, but acknowledging that giving in to ignorance may lead you down the wrong path. In the second verse, Dawn paints this idea beautifully with the lines, “I could rewrite the darkness that came through my family line// But the truth is I find comfort with the shadows in the room// And the monster in the corner ain’t as scary when it’s you.” Dawn admits that her family history has a grim foundation, alluding to the lyrics in the pre-chorus: “Think I’m becoming my father// Got a little too drunk.” There are things from her family that she recognizes as dark. There is a piece of her that wants to end this harmful pattern, and change her future. However, she confesses that fighting with her genetic predispositions may not be what she truly wants, and she seeks the familiarity of her troubled past. In the end, she recognizes that these demons she is facing now are not of her familial past, but of her current self that does not want to admit her flaws. Furthermore, Dawn realizing that the “monster” is not an outside force commanding her to be afraid, but rather a personification of her own fears, provides comfort in the darkness. “Not A Problem” is an incredible addition to Dawn’s discography, providing fans with yet another relatable track to cling to during life’s hardships. True to Estella Dawn’s unique artistry, “Not A Problem” is an ethereal track with a flawless production and heavenly vocals. - Review: "Sorry Excuse" - Ann Gray
Ann Gray’s poetic storytelling tugs on the heartstrings of listeners in her latest single, “Sorry Excuse”. She was inspired to write the track after reading the classic novel, Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, for school. She was fascinated with the concept that the main character could see their love interest in “everywhere and in everything,” including “things as small as individual blades of grass.” In the first verse, she sings, “In every single parking lot// I think I see the silhouette of you// In every grocery line I hear your// Pre-planned pick-up lines.” She continues in both verses to describe the mundane situations that remind her of her partner. Furthermore, Gray uses imagery throughout the track to paint a vivid picture of a toxic relationship where the narrator yearns for their former partner, but recognizes that they are no good for them. Many of these lyrics provide dark depictions of this toxic person that they cannot let go of, bringing tears to listeners’ eyes. In the bridge, Gray sings, “Remember New Years Eve// The alcohol on your breath// Started yelling at me in front of all my friends// Excuse you, I made excuses for you.” The vulnerability in these lines reveal the extent of the emotional abuse the narrator endured, shattering the hearts of listeners. The track provides an overwhelming sense of comfort for those that resonate with the grim lyrics, reminding them that they are not alone in these emotions. Gray’s imaginative storytelling in “Sorry Excuse” further proves her impressive songwriting, comparable to the likes of veterans in the industry. “Sorry Excuse” is a melancholy ballad consisting of vulnerable lyrics and an ethereal production. - Review: "VICIOUS" - Thomas Day
Thomas Day holds nothing back in his compelling new single, “VICIOUS”. The emotional track describes the intense feelings of heartache and betrayal he experienced after a devastating breakup. Day transports the listener into his mind after he discovered that the one he loved had been lying to him. The vulnerable lyrics throughout the song provide an insight that only a brilliant songwriter can deliver. The verses offer detailed descriptions of the torment his partner put him through, while the chorus represents Day rising up through the ashes and setting himself free. He sings, “I wish we could go back to the way it was// But I’ve got my own eyes// I’ve seen enough, all the damage.” He has come to realize that his partner has damaged their relationship beyond repair and now knows he needs to let them go. Day withholds the song title until the bridge, where he ties everything together. He sings, “Thinking about all the memories I’d visit// Hoping they’ll just slowly fade away// And maybe it’s my fault// I knew you were always vicious// I just didn’t know it was a game.” Preserving the title word for this one line makes these lyrics more powerful– more potent. Day reveals that he knew his partner was toxic, but had hoped that their relationship would prevail. But in the end, he was only left hurt and betrayed. “VICIOUS” is a heart wrenching track that beautifully showcases a complicated break-up through Day’s ingenious songwriting. “VICIOUS” is an exceptional track that takes the listener by surprise with the lively production and gloomy lyrics. The song begins with a steady keyboard before Day’s voice kicks off the first verse. When he starts singing, the bass guitar is added, providing a jazzy element to the song. Once the second verse commences, the production from the first verse continues, with the drums remaining present. The chorus returns with its full energy, before Day’s angelic falsettos transition the song into the calm bridge. The production mellows, drawing focus on the vulnerable lyrics, before exploding into one final chorus.
