  • Review: "Prescription" - Caly Bevier

"Prescription" is a fascinating take on love as Caly Bevier describes the love of her life as a sort of prescription. She expresses that this other person is a cure for all of the depression and anxiety she faces on the daily. She even goes as far as to say that "I think you work better than my prescription." She sings about how she feels almost sick without him around and needs him to stay in order to feel okay. This piece is a beautiful expression of how important this person is to Caly and how she truly believes that she could not live this life without him. With a wonderful blend of beachy guitar chords and powerful beats, Bevier created a calming and tranquil melody. In certain parts of the song, the guitar sounds as if it is being played from an outside source and being channeled into the piece through this alternate device. This adds a layer of depth to the piece and allows for Bevier's vocals to sound more prominent. Her voice is a beautiful mix of throaty and smooth as her voice has a truly calming air to it. This strengthens the idea that being with her love calms any negative emotions she experiences. This song has numerous diverse aspects to it between the calm yet dynamic elements of her voice and melody. Caly Bevier was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio. After fighting stage 3 ovarian cancer at 15, Caly packed up her things to chase her dreams and start a new music-driven journey in Los Angeles. Haunted by her religious upbringing she now strives to include messages of being unapologetically herself in her music, so that her listeners can feel comfortable in their own skin and feel less acne in whatever they're going through. Being influenced by myriad genres, Caly loves to blend all sorts of sounds into her songs. She won't be put into a box, she doesn't even know what that is. • Review: "Lonely" - TAMS/N OTWAY

“Lonely” is a wispy and soulful song about a partner who only calls you when they’re lonely. Always looking for how you make them feel and never how they make you feel, the partner feels as though they can call on you whenever they want. “Don’t you call me when you’re lonely, I don’t want you honey, I’m so glad that you’re gone”, she defiantly sings. Her voice carries only resistance and no mercy or emotion for her lover. TAMS/N OTWAY incorporates a variety of genres like retro, dream, and cinematic pop soundscapes as she bounces effortlessly from playful and raw, vulnerable and haunting. Her control over her own image and narrative is so crucial in a world that’s increasingly being run more and more by a team of people rather than someone’s own authentic self. • Review: "Illustrator" - Camens

"Please, I swear to god, if you play The Strokes or The Wombats one more damn time...". If that sentence sounds all too familiar, you might need to expand your horizons for the sake of your friends. While there might be plenty of music out there to add to your little personal collection, if you don't want to stray too far from your 2000s indie-rock comfort zone Camens might just be the group for you. I have been told energy can't be destroyed or created, only change form; I'm not sure where Camens source their calories, but we need to supply them with more so they might keep going, 'cause their output seems unreal. White-water instrumentals combine to rush the energy to the surface of "Illustrator", a boisterous and vibrant track that you'll feel in your spine like a sharp shot of tequila. No time is wasted before drums roll in, preceding the introduction of crisp chords of electric guitar and punchy vocals that form the base framework for the infectiously upbeat track. Poignant lyricism that details the unpredictability and excitement of newfound relationships is delivered with both poise and fervor, be it in the ever-so-slight lulls of the verses or in the relative fever of the caffeinated chorus. Here, Camens show a profound understanding of how to instill electric energy into a crowd, packing the soundscape to the brim with vivacious melody and percussion. Camens , gifted to the world from the industrious Stoke-on-Trent, is the name given to this particular indie band that will stop at nothing (certainly not at festival gates) to deservedly establish themselves as a staple of your indie-rock diet. The group boasts a sound comparable to the likes of The Vaccines and Circa Waves , paying homage to groups that placed the foundations of their genre. If I had to guess, they'll find their way onto your playlists anyway, so why not get a head start and click those links below to find more sonic caffeine? Written By George McSherry FOLLOW CAMENS:

  • Review: “Trust Issues” - Emei

Inspired by a dream where Emei shaved her head, signifying a desire to let go of the Chinese American singer and songwriters newest song “Trust Issues” was born. As she grew up with immigrant parents, there was an overly emphasized need to be independent and self-sufficient, as an unseen side effect Emei has always had trouble dealing out trust to others. As an adult now the reality is that she must now face the issues that this over emphasized self reliability has caused. Her newest single embodies the realization that as you grow up, there is truly no way to rely on only yourself. Beginning with a similar chord progression as her other hit song “Late to the Party” Emei’s new single quickly jumps into a catchy beat to carry the song along. With a combination of witty lyrics as well as lingering melodies her song creates a smooth flow into the various elements of the song. While the beginning of the song starts at a slower pace, the beat quickly picks up with the first chorus and continues in a similar rhythm through the continuing song. While the song progresses she repeatedly changes the lyrical patterns, creating contrasting sounds within the song. She also utilizes strong guitar elements through more impactful parts of the song furthering melodical contrast within the song. At one point in our lives there comes a point when a person emerges who can alter our perspectives in its entirety. From their likes and dislikes to what can make them laugh and cry, knowing the details of their lives and being becomes an obsession of sorts. This type of hyperfixation making every last detail important is what sparked the inspiration for “Obsessed”. NEA EINI’s latest single brings a sultry sound to her discography contrasting some of her earlier works. With a strong beat as well as a str5ong sythmic structure it is easy to become entranced in the song. With this however comes excellently written lyrics, at one point in the song NEA EINI sings “Cause everything about you is interesting, who you are today and who've you been”. • Review: "A.M.C." - The Hilder

Your jacket is leather, your jeans are skinny and ripped, and your dance partner tastes like cigarettes. "A.M.C.", the fresh new single from The Hilder, transports you to a steamy festival marquee amongst the crowd that bounces and sways in a faithful, chaotic order that resorbs you into itself. A direct approach to sustaining the indie-rock sound, "A.M.C." has undeniable energy packed into its curt frame that piques comparisons to the types of festival bands known for producing anthemic tunes such as Bad Suns or Catfish and the Bottlemen. Andy's Man Club, the organization that donates its name to the song, works to champion mental health and to provide a safe space for men to speak openly about any problems they might be facing. While the track may not be a replacement for therapy, it is undeniably uplifting and is likely to help shift your mood for the better in the short term at the very least. A fervent vocal performance from frontman Matty Jackman is energetically bolstered by the fine-tuned combination of Sam Parsons, Danny Jackman, and Regan Grimson on guitar, bass, and drums respectively. Punchy, poignant lyricism is delivered in an appropriately staccato bounce, demanding a toe-tap at the very least. "A.M.C." leaves us in the same abrupt fashion that it introduced itself, with only a slight fade before the indie-daydream fuel sees itself exit stage right. Encore? The Hilder is a four-part band hailing from Yorkshire hellbent on establishing themselves as a deserved staple in the sphere of British indie-rock. In spite of having released just four singles, the group has garnered attention from all the right places to build the necessary momentum so that it might just all fall into place. Hopefully, that won't be too much to take for the fledgling music-makers as their growing fanbase is surely hungry for more singles, EPs, albums, and everything in between. • Review: "Fall For Anything" - Lexie Carroll

It’s hard to see your significant other struggle. When you love someone you share their pain, even when it has nothing to do with you. There is a constant weight on you as you worry about their well being, hoping to see any signs that they're doing better. As time goes on with little sign of improvement, however, insecurity inevitably grows. We begin to wonder if we are to blame, either by virtue of the relationship being flawed, or by simply not being supportive enough to truly help our partner. These insecurities, coupled with the stress of feeling responsible for someone else's mental health (not to mention our own) can turn even the most loving relationships sour. The conversations grow stale, and spending time together begins to feel like a chore as both people feel like they are letting the other one down. In her latest single “Fall For Anything,” Lexie Carroll has reached this point in her relationship. They have been reduced to small talk, as any attempt at opening up feels too depressing, too heavy to place as a burden on the one you love. Though she tries to respect her partner’s boundaries, Lexie can’t keep herself from assuming the worst. Every silence, every long period without a text, every deflection away from emotional honesty, feels like a sign that she is the issue. She’s reached her breaking point, and tired of going through motions, offers an ultimatum: let me in, or cut me off. Lexie only wants to help and if ending the relationship is the best way to do that, that’s something she can accept. On the other hand, she can’t keep letting herself feel like the bad guy, and the only way to avoid that is by having open communication so she can know what's truly going on. Either way, this is Lexie prioritizing her own mental health, trying to shed the constant stress and guilt of being responsible for somebody else’s well being. The production on “Fall For Anything” is the epitome of bedroom pop. The chugging acoustic guitar, repetitive indie backbeat, and light keyboards combine to give the song a beautifully DIY vibe. No part of this track could be considered overproduced: the use of effects is exceedingly sparing, typically reserved for the accentuation of Carroll’s vocals. The natural sound of the instruments fits perfectly with the feeling of the song, leaving more than enough of the listener’s attention to focus on the emotion in Carroll’s voice. The stereo panning in the vocals, combined with the light use of reverb is reminiscent of Phoebe Bridgers or Maggie Rogers, titans of bedroom pop that were clearly large influences on Carroll while writing this song. The chorus features an explosion of high end. Multiple floating keys, high harmonies, topped off by a slide guitar that drags the listener from one section to the next. Despite the weight of the verses, the chorus feels almost euphoric, as Lexie begins to put herself first and take a stance within her relationship. At just 17 years old, Lexie Carroll has shown unbelievable potential at the outset of her career. In just the past two years, she has hit the ground running in building her discography, releasing three singles and two EPs since 2020. Her hot start has not gone unnoticed, Spotify featured Lexie’s “The Sky Looked Nice Today” in their “Next Gen Singer Songwriters” playlist, and she has appeared on multiple indie and folk pop compilation albums. This summer, Lexie has been incredibly active, releasing her second EP “When the Sun Came Up” in addition to “Fall For Anything,” and performing shows all across her home country of England. • Review: "By My Side" - Kid Travis

Kid Travis’ latest single “By My Side” is such a faithful homage to soul classics that it could have come straight out of the 1960s. Both in terms of composition and subject matter, this song feels vintage, but with an infusion of modern energy. Travis’ vocal performance is so emotionally expressive it is almost crooning, but his impressive range and use of falsetto readily bucks that definition. “By My Side” is a portrait of desire, as Travis lays out his dreams of a perfect relationship. He acknowledges the grand gestures that we have all grown accustomed to seeing in the media: the large-scale declarations of love, kissing in the rain. What he seeks, however, are the behind-the-scenes nuances that make a relationship truly strong. Though the public gestures can serve as affirmations of love, they aren’t what true love is. What Travis ultimately wants is support, to find somebody willing to stay by him, help him grow, even if it’s short lived. Click here to listen to By My Side! The laid back tempo and liberal use of seventh chords evokes Travis’ loving, his longing, without him needing to say a word. The instrumentation is sparing, using only drums, guitar, and bass. With such a small backing band, each instrument’s contributions are vital to the feel of the piece as a whole. Of course, Travis’ sultry tone is by far the heaviest contributor to the composition. His vocal control is impeccable, shining through in his ability to maintain his pitch while performing beautiful riffs and vocal runs and producing a haunting vibrato. Despite his mastery over his voice, Travis keeps these skills close to the chest throughout most of the song, instead using them to add emphasis to the chorus, which he belts in an airy-toned falsetto. Alongside carrying the melody, Travis’ background harmonies provide a rich texture to bolster the instrumentation. The song’s heavy use of background vocals provide a subtle nod to doo-wop, a direct ancestor of both r&b and soul, and a fitting genre for a song about love. The song ends in a manner that has become less and less standard in recent years: the fade out. By not overtly ending the song, the fade out allows for the main riff to carry us through the end, giving a sense of conclusion while continuing the momentum that has been built. This ending is yet another stylistic element giving it an old, yet rejuvenated air. Kid Travis has been putting time and effort into his craft. His social media presence has blossomed in the past few years as his combination of original music and covers have garnered the attention of over 480,000 youtube subscribers. He’s shown an unbelievable dedication to using social media to grow his base, engaging frequently with fans via comment sections, twitter, or live streams. His willingness to listen to and communicate with his audiences, and not to mention his other-worldly vocal talent, has led to over 150 million Spotify streams, and has gotten Travis the respect and attention of some of the largest names in pop and r&b such as Dominic Fike, Post Malone, and Bryson Tiller. Travis’ growing discography and versatile sound make him someone to follow closely as his career unfolds. Written By Liam Dun FOLLOW KID TRAVIS:
