“Txt Me Back” is a soft pop-rock song about growing away from a partner. At one point, you and your boyfriend/girlfriend might have been each other best friends. Heartracer sings about knowing this person so well, loving them and doing everything together, and now, they won’t even reply to messages. It’s common for relationships to grow distant and not work out, but it doesn’t change the fact that you’re left with pain, hurt, and a lot of memories. Heartracer really captures the feelings of “what could have been” as the group reflects on how things changed in the relationship. Heartracer’s retro sound is apparent as ever in this new hit single. “Txt Me Back” is undeniably written in an 80’s throwback style. Alexandra wonders what it would be like to find her ride or die in her new track, "Bonnie & Clyde." The track is ready to be blasted out of the speakers of your car on a warm summer night, with the windows down too of course. The track follows Alexandra as she imagines going for the ride of her life with a person who might not be the best for her. As they blow down the highway at 95 mph, she feels free, and even a little self destructive, just like the two the track is named after. The track is pop centered, but with elements of country music twisted into it. The instrumental features instruments like electric guitar, an atmospheric-like synth, drums, and at the front Alexandra's addictive voice. Alexandra also experiments with practical sounds, one of which is the sound of a truck starting. To imagining actually going with this person, feeling like they are your ride or die, and becoming a little self destructive with them, "Like to be shotgun ridin' going 95 // Stop at a Speedway, grab a pack of Marlboro lights // You and I would be smoking guns // So damn fun // But dressed in pretty white lies // I think I know why // We romanticize, Bonnie and Clyde." Alexandra goes into the idea of feeling you're playing life a little too safe, "Life's such a gift, and I was the golden child // Playing it way too safe." She even makes a slick reference to the movie "Grease" in the second verse, "Give me a pink jacket, I'll be your Sandy tonight." Letting us know this night will be iconic. Alexandra is an indie-pop singer based in Dallas, Texas. She is currently working on her debut EP which will feature the track "Bonnie & Clyde." It follows earlier singles, "Bad Stuff" in 2020, and "Winter" in 2021. "New Earth" is a beautiful, melodic song that evokes strong emotions. What's the inspiration behind it? Lily: I wrote this song on Christmas Eve, after the first year of the pandemic, so I was thinking a lot about the world and the amount of sheer disaster that happened in such a short space of time. It was also originally a Christmas present for my mum, so I wanted it to be special for her and have our relationship be the focal point of the story. Some lines in the song were inspired by things we've both said, so I like to think that the song is written from both of our perspectives. As a singer-songwriter, what's your process like when you begin a new project? Lily: I usually have a melodic idea in mind before I sit down to do any actual writing. It's either that or a chord progression I've come up with that I like the sound of. But I rarely start writing the lyrics first. For this project, I started with chords and deliberately played around with ones I hadn't used before because I wanted this song to sound different from everything else I had written. What's it like being part of the UK music scene? Lily: It's honestly really exciting! I think being surrounded by people who love to listen to the same music as you makes it so much easier to discover new artists because you're always talking about music. I'm surrounded by a lot of talented people too. It just makes me want to get better at what I do, whether that's writing, performing, or just how I interact with people in the industry. Brighton is also considered the mecca for music in the U.K., so I feel very lucky to be here! How did you develop your sound? How has it evolved since you first started writing songs at age 11? Lily: When I first started writing songs, I was doing a lot of character writing and shifting the perspective away from my own life. I think I was either too shy to talk about how I felt at such a young age or hadn't gone through enough life experience to say anything meaningful. My music taste was also very radio-based, so I built all of my songs around four-chord structures and pop melodies. I found it quite difficult to find my sound as a teenager because I will quite literally listen to anything, and am not influenced by any particular genre. I experimented a lot with my vocals until I found where I was most comfortable and kept writing until eventually, I stopped sounding like other songwriters and my narrative voice came through. Who is someone you'd love to collaborate with some time and why? Lily: An artist I've been obsessed with recently is Maisie Peters. I just think her songwriting style is so unique and it inspires me to just write about what I want and to stop imposing rules on myself. She's also a really good example of an artist who genuinely just has fun doing what she does, which I think is really important. I would love to collaborate with her, that would be an absolute dream. What has been one of your favorite live performances? Lily: I recently played at the Folklore Rooms in Brighton, which was a big achievement, because it's one of my favorite venues to go to. “Deconstruction” is a pop-rock bop about identifying and breaking down your relationships, looking for what you gain from them as well as what others earn. All relationships are different, lasting with different amounts of attention, comfort, and time. But sometimes, people can fall into unhealthy patterns and loops. And when you’ve broken free from one loop, you may be caught in another one because it’s what seems normal to you. SKIES uses a blend of pop and rock as well as emo imagery to convey this message of finding a break in your patterns. Though the song initially seems menacing, it gradually moves into uplifting territory as SKIES encourages you to look at what’s best for you, not what’s best for those around you. Filled with catchy hooks and pulsating beats, the encouraging narrative delivers and hits you to take a step back and look at what you’re doing with your life. SKIES is a pop-rock duo made up of Alie, guitar/vocals, and Jericho, drums/vocals. They’ve been around for a long time, releasing their first album If You Feel Like It in 2015 before releasing three more subsequent albums and singles through 2020. During the winter of 2020, after playing over 200 live streams and a month-long garden tour, SKIES retreated to a wooden cabin sequestered in the middle of nowhere to record their album It’s Not the End Of the World in response to the stresses and changes of the pandemic. “Running” is a slow soulful ballad about running from things that could be good for you. No one really knows what will come out of relationships, and it’s scary to think that the time you devote to someone can be instantly thrown away in a simple text or conversation. So it’s scary to accept a relationship, to delve into one. Sometimes, the safer option seems to run away, to run away from love and something that has the capacity to allow you to evolve and develop further as a person, but also the capacity to thrust you into the deepest pits anyone has ever been before. Elamar uses his strong and soulful voice to push impressive notes and ranges. He utters the chorus line in different intonations and expressions. Though the production is minimal, the impact is huge and only enhances Elamar’s impressive voice. This track is not only captivating, but it’s also touching as Elamar pours all of his feelings into the song. Born and raised in the village of Peace, a unique community of African American repatriates in southern Isreal, Elamar embodies a soulful blend of two disparate worlds. His soulful and wholesome pop sound reflects his humble and spiritual upbringing in a communal environment. For now, Elamar has only been teasing us with singles, but an album is sure to be on its way. With his unique upbringing, Elamar desires to pour every ounce of himself into his music, but it’s only there, that he’s able to use his experiences to relate to everyday people. Repeating the lyrics, "You could never," during the chorus acts as a reenforcement to young lovers that lost their self-confidence to toxic partners; emphasizing that they are going to heal and they do not need them. The guitar solo towards the end of the song really brings home the entire song by grabbing the listener's attention resulting in a more entertaining and emotionally captivating song. This fun summer song is the perfect track to blast in the car! “Tell Your Mom to Stop Calling Me” is about one of Nicolette’s ex’s mom who just would not stop talking to her after they broke up. I think this song is lighthearted and a nice way to think about a breakup. Obviously breaking up with someone can be hard and painful, and sometimes you don’t think about the fact that you’re leaving their family also. Having an ex’s family member stick around in your life, isn’t the easiest to deal with when you’re trying to move on and forget about them. This tune is just kind of like saying “look, I’m over this, quit trying to tell me about things I don’t want to remember”. Catchy lyrics, snappy rhythmic elements, and fun electric synths, “Tell Your Mom to Stop Calling Me” has everything you need for a perfect summer jam. Simply put, this tune is fun and relaxed. It’s an easy song to just sway along to. The vibes are very much giving “hot girl summer”. It’s a cool electric modern pop track and it should be added to your playlist ASAP. Capua’s vocals have a nice full sound, making her sound strong and powerful and not on the airy or dainty side. Her vocals represent who she is and showcases her personality and natural singing abilities. Overall, this single is well-rounded in all its musical aspects which makes it that much more brilliantly put together. Nicolette Capua is a Staten Island native who has been singing from a very young age. With a passion for music and songwriting, Capua has been led to have many releases and collaborations. In “Cold Nights,” LZRD combines a dance beat and a breakup song. It sheds both a positive and negative light. On one hand, the lyrics talk about the efforts put forth in a relationship and how they seemed to be wasted. On the other hand, the person being broken up with still wishes the best for her ex. This message teaches us not to hold grudges against people. Karma will reward you for good behavior. That is, if you want your ex to find someone better instead of wishing them the worst, fate will give you the love you deserve as well. I really enjoyed the instrumentation of the song. The upbeat-ness was perfect for the track’s positive message. The dance beat repeats after the chorus. I thought that was a great place to put it. The verses and almost all of the chorus are about where the relationship went wrong. The chorus ends with the words, “tell me she holds you on the cold nights.” It is as if all the negative energy is released, and the dance beat is there to represent freedom. A weight is lifted up, and all that’s left to do is dance! Born and raised in Virginia, Keenan Haan (AKA LZRD) has had an eventful career on the electronic music scene.
