- Review: "summer love" - myah
The beginning of a new relationship is exciting. Getting to know someone is fun and seeing how they encourage different sides of you to shine can create wonderful feelings. In time, however, this excitement settles down into routine and stability. Some find this stability monotonous, but it is necessary for a successful partnership. This doesn’t mean that the exciting, puppy-love feeling is gone forever. This is what “summer love” by myah is about. Myah uses reflective lyrics as well as an emotionally complex backing track to describe the reignition or re-realization of that strong, youthful affection during a long-term relationship. This work begins with a piano chord progression that creates a reflective atmosphere. The energetic drumbeat creates energy that drives the track. The bouncy synths create an almost retro feeling that reminds listeners of the energetic and fun songs from the golden age of disco. During the chorus, myah adds in a vocal echo of the lyrics. This creates a dreamy effect that adds to the soundscape of the track in a beautiful way. The lyrics describe the experience of the honeymoon phase, something temporary. The piano creates a sort of melancholy mood, and the percussion adds an upbeat feeling that combines and reflects the fun but bittersweet nature of the beginning of a relationship. Myah is an indie musician from South Florida. She works within a variety of genres, including pop, alternative rock, and pop-punk. Not only is myah a phenomenal musician, but she is also a filmmaker. Storytelling is a huge aspect of her art. She explores a wide range of human emotion, creating masterful works of art that delve deep into the human experience. Myah will be releasing a debut album in August of this year entitled “i don’t know what i’m feeling”. On this album will be a number of fantastic songs, including “summer love”. She already has garnered praise from a number of sources for her storytelling and performance abilities, and there is no doubt that myah will make a name for herself. - Review: "Pheromone" - Danny Addison
Danny Addison's song "Pheromone" shows how desire for another person can consume you. The speaker of the song confesses all the ways their partner makes them vulnerable with lyrics like "you'll be the death of me" expressing an ultimate power imbalance. The song goes on to prove that the speaker wouldn't have it any other way, offering insights into the control love can have over a person. The lyrics "it's your touch, your taste, your pheromone" bring sensory images of intimacy to mind, and powerfully display attraction all the way to the chemical level. With its message of devotion, this soulful track lets listeners experience the vulnerability of desire. The slow strumming of an acoustic guitar opens the track as ambient vocalizing joins in. Through the verse, Danny's vocals work at a measured pace as he moves from the high highs to the raspy depth of his range. The singing pre-chorus and chorus lean into the low part of Danny's range, simultaneously airy and deep, which unlocks a suspenseful romantic tone. Percussion, intense and purposeful keyboard notes ringing out through the chorus will make your heart race before the track leans into its powerful instrumentals with electric guitar and drums reflecting the passionate urgency of the lyrics. Truly a song for the lovers, "Pheromone" captures the power of desire and intimacy in its sound. Danny Addison is an English artist with a soulful alternative folk-pop style. - Review: "Where did he go?" - Sara Baroni
A moment of realization settles in for most of us, those potent and overwhelming feelings that settle deep in our hearts when we discover that we have intense feelings for an individual. It’s a moment of clarity and reassurance when we learn where the source of these vehement feelings stems from. There are times, however, when we aren’t quite ready to face these feelings. Perhaps we’ve been through them too many times, and our hearts won’t take another possible heartbreak. Instead, we seem to deny ourselves, deny that resonating ache in our chests that claw at us from within, itching to burst and exclaim the validity of our true feelings. Before we’ve even labeled them, we can’t help but stew on them, trying laboriously to digest the emotions that have suddenly surfaced. “Where did he go?” by Sara Baroni is a song that discusses the same idea, utilizing atmospheric production and thoughtful lyrics to relate and portray these feelings that a plethora of listeners have likely experienced. With lyrics like “You love to follow the sequence of catching feelings” and “I think it’s too late, cause you are just fixating,” these are words that so raw and honest, it can further allow listeners to indulge in their true feelings, and sit with them. This song opens up beautifully and gradually, the mix of sounds creating something lachrymose and pensive. The slow beat, blended with the serene guitar strings, makes this sound almost nostalgic, as if we are ripping a page away from our memories, lingering on our thoughts. As Sara's voice settles in, we recognize the sense of passion and heartfelt sentiment that her presence adds, the lyrics not only providing intricate meaning to the song, but also describing something that is thoroughly relatable, touching the hearts of listeners who have perhaps endured such emotions that the song describes. Taking a minute to relish the song for what it is, I cherish its raw depth and how transparent it is. Innately, many of us experience what the song describes, that strange gray area in the stages of being interested in someone. When we aren't quite ready to label our emotions, perhaps out of fear, instead we stay quiet, and simply reflect on ourselves, waiting for that sign. Waiting for the right time, when our hearts are finally ready to give in, and voice our strong affections. Sara Baroni, the exceptionally talented artist behind the song "Where did he go?", is a singer-songwriter of Italian descent based in Singapore, mostly resonating with genres like pop and indie. - Review: "Scared" - Lara Simonot
In her first ever professionally recorded track, Lara Simonot hits the ground running with the release of her single “Scared”. This song is powerful and raw, with Simonot addressing her past lover directly, hating him for taking all of her love and throwing it away, and kicking herself for being scared of him leaving. She looks back on their love, realizing the damage done from the start and how toxic he was. Simonot says, “This song is for anyone who dated a narcissist, a misogynist, or a man in general. It's for the girls who like screaming their hearts out in the car.” This track starts slow, with just a few piano chords followed by a deep sigh, as if Simonot is finally letting go of all the emotions built up. In the first verse, she slowly explains how he lied, manipulated, and hurt her, and with the first sing of the chorus she has found her voice and becomes stronger with her hatred. The song builds gradually until it explodes into the bridge, where Simonot belts her heart out in angst. Two vocal lines are paired together: the foreground where she chants and yells about how much he hurt her, while the background line highlights her heartfelt tonality as she vocalizes along with the building drum beats. She sings, “You used me like an excuse / Yeah I was tired out there / You held me tight like a noose / Yeah I was fucking scared / If you knew the damage you do / You couldn't even bear / You loved me you said you do / Why was I fucking scared?” Despite “Scared” being Simonot’s first release, it has amassed over 2k streams in the past week since its release, and has granted Simonot almost 1.5k monthly Spotify listeners already. An independent artist from Toronto, Canada, Simonot is 26 years old. With a similar sound and power to an early Taylor Swift breakup song, she is sure to hit the ground running. Her passion and talent make for a rising pop star, and she certainly has the angst to put into more emotional work. - Review: "Malta" - Markoe
There comes a time every few days, weeks or even months where you stop and take a second to breathe. There is so much time in one single day that we spend constantly doing things and being on the go. We often forget to take a step back once every few hours and just enjoy the moment we are in. Whether you are driving, sitting at work, studying or even hanging out with friends we are never truly alone. We can never just take a step back and let out all the emotions we are feeling because there is always so much to do. Markoe’s brand-new single “Malta” reminds us to do exactly what we can never find time to do, which is to stop, look around, and breathe or laugh or even cry. The delicate and light piano keys opening this track immediately caught my attention. I am such a huge fan of any acoustic musical vibe. It gives off such a dreamy but euphoric mood to me. This whole track was so vulnerable and authentic with lyrics like “Drowning in my own thoughts” and “I thought I was happy / But I cry alone on the balcony.” They were so touching, and you could really feel how deeply this song means to her. This track is the perfect song to listen to if you ever need a reminder that it’s okay to feel not okay with anything going on in life. Markoe is a new singer/songwriter from Australia. She debuted her first single titled “Malta” on April 30, 2025, and has already accumulated 500 plus monthly listeners. Her journey into the music industry is so unique as she was once a schoolteacher who found love in music. This song is just the beginning of her amazing career with open and heartfelt music. If you haven’t already, I seriously recommend listening to her outstanding new release. - Review: "One Love" - Florence Noon
Florence Noon’s debut single, One Love, is a mid tempo chill pop song that reminiscences about her one true love. When you’re in love, you feel like that person is the only one you’ll ever want to be with. You think you’ll end up together, but things don’t work out and you miss them. That’s the message Florence is conveying is evident through both the lyrics and the music video. In the music video, the couple is shown in a cafe and apartment. Sometimes, they are arguing. At other times, they are locked in embrace. In relationships, it’s normal to argue, but sometimes, we can’t move past those arguments and that’s when you know the relationship is on its final legs. One Love features her singing over catchy drums, acoustic guitar, and a simple, yet effective production. Lyrics such as “Those days feel so far away, Heated heads and drunken ways, I guess love is blind, Am I still on your mind?” and “It’s not you no it’s just me, It all worked out so conveniently, You didn’t even try, There was no real goodbye” find her reflecting on the best moments of the relationship and trying to figure out what led to the bad moments and, ultimately, the end of the relationship. The chill vibe of the song and laid-back vocals make this a solid debut and my personal pick for song of the summer so far. Florence Noon is a singer-songwriter hailing from West London. She is inspired by Amy Winehouse , Corinne Bailey Rae , and Lily Allen . She recently sold out two shows at the Pizza Express Live in London and is now releasing music. She has performed unreleased songs including “Unrequited Love”, “Blue”, and “Selfish” at her shows. She has also covered many popular songs including Chris Stapleton ’s “ Tennessee Whiskey ” and Maroon 5 ’s “ Sunday Morning ”. These live performances can be found on her Youtube channel. - Review: "Ingram Road" - Libby Johnston
Libby Johnston’s latest single “Ingram Road” was released on May 11, 2025. The song is set around a beautiful message that many can relate too. While growing up can be exciting and a whole new chapter in your life is just starting. The fear and sadness of leaving your family to go and live that life never leaves your mind. No matter how old you are or how far away you are from those you love there is always this feeling that something is missing. You may be leaving a huge piece of your heart behind wherever you go but the love you receive by leaving is greater than anything. The song opens up with the most heart-warming intro possible. With a gentle and old home video feel starting off this track I immediately was drawn in. Everything about this song felt so homey and familiar, not to mention how soul stirring her voice was. I could not get enough of the beautiful lyrics like “I wanted to thank you for being so kind / For leading the way all of the time.” I thought this track was really distinctive in the way that she was just having a conversation. It was so sincere and genuine, and I simply loved every second of it as it reminded me of times when I have to leave for long periods of time. Libby Johnston is a singer/songwriter from Auckland, New Zealand. She started releasing music just a few years ago in 2023 with her first single titled “right person, wrong time.” While she only has a few tracks they are all purely her. In everything she releases she does so with a great amount of passion and honesty ensuring her listeners can relate to it. “Ingram Road” is such a wonderful song which she dedicated and gifted to her mother this past mother’s day. I highly recommend listening to this track as it displays such a touching message. - Review: "I Quit for Summer" - LACES
Artwork: Meg Mangels Photography: Sterling Taylor Styling: Claudia Avila Hair & Makeup: Jenna Howell “I Quit for Summer” is the newest single from LACES, a song about taking a break to have fun during the summer season. There are many things in life that cause you to be stressed and overworked and make it so that you’re having a hard time, such as a job, being in a toxic relationship, being friends with the wrong people, and so on. LACES has had enough of all of this and decides she needs to move on from these things in order to have fun and have a great time this summer. If you live somewhere that’s cold all year round except for the short period of time from June-August, you usually have to wait for months until you can finally see the sun when it’s not blocked by a flurry of clouds, and you won’t be freezing the second you leave your house. LACES details all about this in her song. The production of “I Quit for Summer” will transport you right back to the 80s and the era of upbeat pop music and disco synths that dominated the time period. Just like how LACES says she wants to quit and have fun, listening to this single will make you feel the same exact way. You can hear this kind of song at the club or at a pool party, and everyone will stop what they’re doing and start dancing. The vibes will be elevated onto another level once the chorus hits and flows through the speakers and boomboxes and into your ears. You could also hear this song on the radio while driving and sing it at the top of your lungs. LACES, is a singer-songwriter, musician, and producer from Wall Township, New Jersey and is based in Los Angeles, California. She has used different aliases when releasing her work, including the name Charlotte Sometimes for her May 2008 debut album Waves and the Both of Us and on the competition show The Voice . - Review: “Blueprints” - Philip La Rosa
“Blueprints” by Philip La Rosa stands with dynamic instrumentals, particular vocals, and a looming metaphor that communicates what words alone fail to describe. La Rosa symbolizes a “broken heart” through cautious diction that indicates failing architecture. Key words like “halls”, “blueprints”, “foundation”, “walls”, and other thematic phrases allude to a falling building that’s equivalent to a crushed heart- the most notable result of a shattered relationship. He offers a written plan of his emotional demise, detailed with clues about the faults of the relationship, like outgrowth and distrust. With a cracked foundation, La Rosa intimately notes the fall of a friendship and love, allowing adaptation of the song for varied experiences of grief. This versatility makes “Blueprints” such a valuable piece- listeners can relate and apply the song to their own mourning. La Rosa strides through the introduction with a brief, clean piano melody that attracts his voice after two bright 8-counts. He exhibits a forgiving, compelling voice complemented by a layered harmonization, or slight echo. This creates an auditory illusion of stretched vocals, resembling the unrewarded overexertion of emotion that adheres the lyrics to the sound within the song. The way the vocals interact with the instrumentals create an equilibrium for a complete, satisfying listen. Though tantalizing in terms of emotional vulnerability and mental health empowerment, "Blueprints" still evokes sorrow. In addition to the eloquence of La Rosa’s lyricism, a medley of classic ballad and synth pop sounds welcome a musical diversity that parallels La Rosa’s dedication to self expression and representation. Philip La Rosa began making music with a passion for the genre and an appreciation of the opportunity to tell stories. Debut album, “Strong”, positively affected his reach as an artist, paving the way for the popularization of one of his 2016 releases, “Pride”. La Rosa displays infectious honesty in his art that frequently draws listeners from Australia and the US into his sentimental hold. He often suggests support of truth, especially in LGBTQ+ representation and his artistic process. In collaboration with Australian producer Nic Rollo , La Rosa aims for further integrity and impressive depth that mirrors growth and freedom within his career. - Album Review: "Dreamsicle" - Maren Morris
Dreamsicle by Maren Morris via marenmorris.com Maren Morris took the country music scene by storm in 2016 when she released her hit album, Hero. Since then, she has released music that is authentically hers, not sticking to one genre or subject matter. Her latest album, Dreamsicle, marks her latest venture. The project is her first non-country album, filed under the pop genre. However, the flawless album maintains Morris’s iconic soulful sound with pop, country, rock, and folk influences. Throughout the fourteen songs, she shares meaningful stories of love, heartbreak, religious trauma, and everything in between. Track List lemonade people still show up cry in the car cut! featuring Julia Michaels bed no breakfast dreamsicle i hope i never fall in love too good push me over because, of course grand bouquet this is how a woman leaves carry me through holy smoke lemonade Morris kicks off the album with a sass-filled pop track that is the epitome of the singer. It has the clever lyricism, that bouncy soundscape, and powerful vocalizing that Morris has become known for. The song explores the ending of a relationship where she contemplates how she will make lemonade out of their bitter lemon. Her muse has caused her so many problems that she can no longer pretend what they are – a waste of time and a waste of lime. Her cheeky storytelling is what initially drew me into the artist, and it is refreshing to know that despite the genre change, she is still the Maren Morris we know and love. people still show up “people still show up” is a bittersweet, soulful ballad that finds light within the dark. Morris shares that no matter how scary the world is – and we all know how bad this year has been – being surrounded by the right people can sometimes be all you need. Morris has been involved in controversy in the music world, specifically within the country music industry, when she stood up for the transgender community. The song seems to reference this in the second chorus when she sings, “They’re gonna try and say, “you really crossed the line // you should’ve shut your mouth and smiled // ‘cause now you finally went and said too much” // But it was just enough // ‘Cause people still show up.” During the thick of this issue, tabloids and country music fans claimed Morris’s career was over. However, the people who mattered stood behind her, and the pop genre welcomed her with open arms. Morris is a walking example that the right people really do show up when you need them. cry in the car The third track is a heartbreaking yet utterly relatable song. Morris sings her heart out to a former lover, whom she sees moving on from them like it’s nothing. They are falling in love with someone new at the bar they used to frequent and recycling their old inside jokes with new people. Morris will never let them, or anyone, see her cry. So, she hides in her car with tinted windows and releases her emotions there. Despite the devastating lyrics, the song is a fun bop that gets the listener out of their chair and wanting to dance along. Stripped down to the bare bones, “cry in the car” would be a gut-wrenching song that would rip the listener to pieces. cut! featuring Julia Michaels “cut! was initially released as the lead single from Morris’s 2024 EP, Intermission. This project served as a perfect transition from her country to the pop era. The song is about trying to hold yourself together in the hard times and wanting to keep others from seeing you at your breaking point. The poignant track describes a feeling many of us all feel so well – wanting to scream, cut like a director of a movie. But instead, it is to pause the chaos in your life and take the moment to cry your eyes out. She wants an intermission in life. But then again, don’t we all? bed no breakfast “bed no breakfast” is a cheeky track about enjoying intimate time with a new partner but desiring personal time afterward. Morris sings to her muse that while she does want them to call her again, and she had a great time, her house is a “bed no breakfast” – a play on the term “Bed and Breakfast.” The song maintains the sultry vibe that many of the songs on Dreamsicle and previous Morris albums contain. With her sultry voice, “bed no breakfast” is the perfect “avoidant, but sexy anthem.” dreamsicle The title track is a whimsical song that beautifully encompasses the dreamy atmosphere that Morris is singing about. The lovely acoustic ballad lulls the listener into the wonderful soundscape as she sings about living in the moment and loving the life you were given. Morris has had a rollercoaster of a life the past few years, so it is no surprise that she wants to step back and express gratitude for the good in her life. It is an important reminder that good can always be found in the bad. i hope i never fall in love “i hope I never fall in love” is another song originally released on Intermission. The song has the singer’s iconic tongue-in-cheek lyricism, reminding me of some of my favorite tracks from her album Hero, like “Rich” and “Drunk Girls Don’t Cry.” In the first line, Morris sings: “Take another page from my heroes’ book.” This line may be Morris directly hinting at the previous album, signifying the last project released before meeting her ex-husband. She was cynical then, and she is cynical now. This direct call back and the iconic sass is what makes “i hope I never fall in love” my favorite track on Dreamsicle. too good In “too good,” Morris expresses her resentment and anger toward her ex through sharp and fierce lyrics. She confesses that the people who love her view her as “too good to leave” but “too bored to stay.” She admits she let this go on for too long, and she should have let this relationship end sooner than it did. She ends the chorus with the lyric: “I was always too good for your ass anyway.” However, the most savage line is at the end of the bridge when she proclaims: “But, bitch, you still owe me rent!” She exposes her former partner for the mooch that they are and lays it out on the table. Morris does not ever shy away from a fight, and when she has something to say, she will say it – Something her fans have loved and respected about her since her early days. push me over “push me over” is a catchy anthem that I can perfectly envision being played live. Morris would have orange lighting and enthusiastic crowd work that would effortlessly boost the mood of the audience. The song is about the exciting beginning of a relationship and the sexual tension that goes along with it. She wants them to push her over into the bed and explore this new feeling. The track was initially released on her 2024 EP, Intermission , and is her first song that references her bisexuality. because, of course “because, of course” is the sister song to “people still show up.” Instead of a general statement that people will show up for those they love, “because, of course” represents Morris’s own dedication to be there for her muse. She tells them that, no matter what, she will be the floor they land on, the chords in the song they play, and the wind beneath their wings. Nothing in this world will keep her from uplifting her subject. It is a powerful anthem that is a testament to Morris’s fierce loyalty and unconditional love. The song made its debut on the EP, Intermission. grand bouquet “grand bouquet” is a self-reflective track about taking things for granted in relationships. The song has a soft, acoustic soundscape that is very reminiscent of Kacey Musgraves. The light guitar and soothing bass guide the listener through the introspective song. Morris apologizes to her lover for waiting for a “grand bouquet,” wishing for this huge gesture. But the whole time, they were giving her a flower every day – a small, meaningful gift regularly. From now on, she will appreciate them for the small acts of kindness and pray they will forgive her. It is a sweet sentiment that represents Morris’s past trauma and desire to move forward. this is how a woman leaves “this is how a woman leaves” is the last track on dreamsicle that was originally released on Intermission. The song is a devastatingly vulnerable track about breaking free from an unhealthy relationship. Morris declares the universal truth that when a woman decides to leave, her decision has been made up for a while, and there is no turning back. It is an empowering anthem about reclaiming your independence and joy. carry me through “carry me through” contains Morris’s iconic R&B sound paired with her sultry voice. The soundscape emulates gospel music, something Morris has utilized throughout her career (her first hit single was “My Church”). This is paired with religious lyrics such as “preaching to a choir of one” and “I haven’t heard a hallelujah.” However, instead of singing to a higher power, Morris sings to herself. She knows life can be hard, but she is the one who has the strength to push through. The track empowers listeners as they experience one of the hardest years of the modern era, encouraging them to hold on and believe in themselves. holy smoke Morris continues with the religious theme in “holy smoke.” The song explores religious trauma and navigating a world full of holier-than-thou Christians. As a spiritual woman who believes in God and Jesus, but lost faith in the Church, “holy smoke” impacts me differently than most. “But the world got less depressing when I finally left the house // Wasn’t locked out of heaven, I just had to look around.” Morris's joy came after leaving the church and focusing on the beauty in the world around her. Christianity has been skewed along the way to fit an aggressive, power-hungry agenda. It is no longer about loving thy neighbors, but controlling them. Morris intends to remind those people that they don’t actually know what happens after death, and trying to control others based on their personal belief is a waste of time – because in the end, we are all going up in holy smoke. Dreamsicle by Maren Morris captivates the audience from the first note and keeps their attention until the end. Dreamsicle showcases a new, more mature side of Morris. As the first album since her divorce and coming out as bisexual, the singer shares glimpses into the new chapter of her life while upholding her privacy. Every track consists of lyrics that perfectly complement her sultry voice and poetic lyrics – characteristics that made long-time fans fall in love with the singer. Morris will be going on tour to promote the album, so check out her website to see if she will be coming to a city near you and follow her on all social media!
