I’m not sure if I’ve ever been exposed to dream-rock before today, but I have to say, I’m definitely a fan. Ok Cowgirl recently released their single, “Forever”, a single for their upcoming album "Couldn't Save Us From Your Gut" which will be out on August 16th! “Forever” is a soft and meditative song about the “what ifs” surrounding ending a relationship. I especially love the lyric, “If I love you but still dread feeling I have to see it through / does that mean I shouldn’t stay / will this pass, is it a phase.” I won’t lie, when I first heard this song, it reminded me of the theme song for Grey’s Anatomy, so I was immediately interested in hearing more. I feel like I could sit and daydream for hours to this song. Like I said before, this song is perfect for daydreaming. I think it’s due to the dreamy, soft vocals from lead singer, Leah Lavigne. But also, I think the accompanying band only pushed things over the top, leaving us with this perfect example of how a song can make one ponder and reflect. I genuinely loved everything about this song, but I can also say that I’ve never heard anything like it, either. Most of the music I listen to is either by mainstream pop stars or opera tenors. But do I dare say I can now add “Forever” to my favorites playlist? Yes, and I absolutely did. Ok Cowgirl is a NYC-based band made up of lead-singer Leah Lavigne, along with Matt Birkenholz, Jake Sabinsky, John Miller, and Ryan Work. They began releasing music back in 2020, with the release of their debut single, “Get Gone”. Since then, they have gone on to release a handful of other singles, and two EP’s. The band loves putting on liver performances, and are even currently on tour! Ok Cowgirl has one of the most unique sounds I’ve ever had the pleasure to study. In 2020, LAUREL’s track “Scream Drive Faster” took over my life and became one of my most listened to songs of that year. While quarantining with my parents at the age of twenty, lost & confused about where things were going and how I felt, this song transported me to a place where I found comfort and joy. Since then, LAUREL’s music has been in my rotation quite often, and I’ve discovered that there’s always something fresh and different with each song she executes. With “Coming Back For More,” I was pleasantly proven again that LAUREL is doing something that deserves the pop spotlight alongside artists like Billie Eilish, Lorde, and Gracie Abrams. With both soothing and powerful vocals and electronic, yet naturally sounding, backing instrumental aspects to her music, LAUREL is an artist to immediately add to your dance playlist and keep an eye out for. In “Coming Back For More,"  LAUREL once again transported me to another place and made me forget my surroundings. While listening to the song, I was taken to different, exciting places that created energy in my feet and painted a smile across my face. I pictured places like the beach – where I can run, the front seat of my car – where I can sing and be myself, and the city – where there are endless possibilities, and anything can happen. It’s very special to have a song deliver you to another place as this one does, and it is one of the many reasons why I cannot recommend LAUREL’s music enough to people. Meanwhile, Roox’s voice guides the listener through the wistful storyline. “By My Side” shares the story of “a summer love that ended in tragedy.” The song details a whirlwind romance that occurred in the 80s between her late aunt and her aunt's lover—before Roox was even born. Tragically, the lover was killed in a motorcycle accident. “By My Side” contains lyrics told from her aunt’s perspective where she pictures her life before this heartbreak, when her muse was still alive. She tells him: “Every day I’ll keep you by my side// I close my eyes and try to picture you alive// The sizzling heat at this time of year makes me think of you.”  This brings to light the notion that your first love will always stick with you—even through death. With Roox’s captivating storytelling and heavenly vocals, “By My Side” was the perfect song to kick off the flawless project. Baby Blue “Baby Blue” begins instantaneously with Roox’s stunning voice and a soft guitar to introduce the listener to the melancholic message. The lyrics describe a special kind of heartbreak—one that happens slowly over time. And one day you wake up and realize that the love has expired. Roox describes the one thing that makes the narrator hold on—her lover’s baby blue eyes. In the pre-chorus, she introduces this with the lyrics: “But we meet eyes// The noise, it dies// They make me forget all of this.” The moment she catches their gaze, all her doubts fade away. She becomes transfixed by the ocean eyes that she initially fell in love with. “Baby Blue” is a unique storyline that showcases the inevitable fall of a relationship that is still hanging on by a thread, highlighting Roox’s remarkable songwriting. Pop Song The melancholic atmosphere continues with the soft piano ballad and stunning vocals. The production contains only these two elements for the first verse and chorus, establishing the gut-wrenching storyline. The extra sounds of the piano being played were kept in, enhancing the intimate vibe of the song. In the second verse, a soothing synth beat and electric guitar are added, slowly met by a subtle drum. The gradual build of the instrumentation accentuates the passion in the lyrics, as the story becomes more intricate and heart-wrenching with each stanza. The final chorus decreases back down to the initial soundscape, bringing the track full circle. Roox describes a relationship that always comes back for more, like a hit pop song that continues to play on the radio even after the hype dies down. No matter what she does to avoid this song, it will always find its way back to her. Roox’s clever metaphor is another excellent example of her undeniable songwriting talent. Garden Of Eden “Garden Of Eden” contains a more optimistic and whimsical vibe than the previous tracks. With a dazzling alt-rock and indie-pop blend, the track instantly caught my attention. The well-rounded song has a sultry vibe that complements the singer’s soulful voice while creating a soft rock soundscape that effortlessly resonates with her audience. The song shares a more hopeful message. One about a love that is a safe haven, a paradise—like the Garden of Eden. While the other tracks are woeful and grim, the fourth song does not share this theme. Roox reflects this with the infectious soundscape, making it an instant fan favorite. When This All Ends The final track sees the return of the somber atmosphere with a gorgeous ballad. The unique intro captured my attention as Roox’s beautiful voice sang the lyrics while stunning harmonies hummed in the background. This transitions into a classic indie-rock style with a soft piano and delicate guitar in the chorus, before decreasing to the piano in the verse. Roox’s vocal range is showcased, with stunning high notes and the use of her lower register. She chose to close the project with the most beautiful and intricate production, earning its spot as my personal favorite. From the vulnerable lyrics to the genre-blending sounds, “When This All Ends” is the perfect ending to a flawless EP. By My Side by Penny Roox packs a big punch for a smaller project. The singer has beautifully crafted an unforgettable EP filled with wonder, love, and loss. From the tragic story of the title track to the complex instrumental build of “Pop Song”, the project has something for everyone. Roox’s magnificent voice astonishes listeners, from her steady vocal control to the passion they display. “All These Angels” is created by them, a haven of peace and romance presented softly.  The song offers a glimpse into a relationship.  That one on one isolation that never feels lonely, but rather presents being alone as companionship.  The biggest theme of the lyrics is this abandonment of the rest of the world, even heaven, because they already have it.  Every low of life disappears with the sun as it sets and they take in a moment together.  “All These Angels” is truly about one, and the heaven he’s brought to with her.  When there seems to be nothing, the song is a reminder that there is someone to share the seeming misery with, and therefore there isn’t misery at all. The tone of the son fits its title, the instrumental being light, airy, and well, angelic.  The guitar is distant and high, sounding like a memory.  The storytelling and imagery of the lyricism ties this in even more so, echoes of the vocals making every statement have a dreamy after effect.  The setting of the song is beautifully developed and acts as a method for displaying roles in the relationship, for instance, “taking the wheel” on a road trip.  The chorus feels incredibly grounding, certainly more fast-paced than the rest of the song but in a way which connects the listener and allows for emotion rather than distraction from it.  The unchanging voice, calm and low presents another form of reliability and peace that fully develops the themes of the piece.
