Although Carson is too young to have lived in the 90's, he goes through something many of us have also experienced. The age old question: was I born in the wrong generation? Us old souls sometimes feel too mature to be a part of the culture the rest of the people our age follow. It's hard feeling like you don't fit in, and like you're too smart for you own good. Carson takes this relatable situation, mixes it with a little bit of romance, and twists it into a 90's pop-bop that'll get stuck in your head all day. With help from his collaborator and producer, Mykyl (who is also an incredible musician), they took a style we all know and love and made it their own. With some lyrical nods to some of our favorite icons and songs from the 90's like Brittany Spears' "Hit Me Baby One More Time" and "Bye Bye Bye" by NSYNC, you will feel like you're being transported back in time. The short track is filled with dreamy synth lines, light vocals, and soft guitar strums. Canadian pop singer-songwriter Jade LeMac just released her single "Grapevines." It comes as the second single off her upcoming EP, Confessions, that is set to release on November 3, 2023. The sultry pop track was centered around the word 'grapevines,' as LeMac saw a vine in the studio and considered how it would be a unique word to use in a song. She thought about the more seductive side of grapes, the way you might see them fed to someone in a film. Grapes are also, of course, associated with wine. She used the connotations as the inspiration for this commercial pop track about craving someone. The alt pop track "Grapevines" starts off with LeMac singing the sexy confession, "Feed me off of those grapevines / Let's make wine / Let's make love." Icy beats and synth-filled production back her vocals as she compares the sweet, yet bitter sensation of craving a person to the way that you would crave grapes, or a glass of wine. If you are anything like me, you have at some point in your life experienced the aching feelings of anxiety and depression. Usually, I tend to gravitate towards music that could potentially send me into a downward spiral, hoping that all of the negative energy will drain out of me at once so I can get on with my day. However, sometimes a song will come along that will make me feel empowered and worthy. “Let Me Go” is the latest single by singer and songwriter, Nikki White, and it has honestly changed a lot of my views on what kind of music I listen to and when. This song and the message behind it are so immensely special. White wrote “Let Me Go” to act as a sort of anthem to uplift, empower, and inspire anyone who may be struggling with self-doubt, toxicity, anxiety, depression… you name it! Listen to "Let Me Go" on Spotify! It’s been a while since I have heard a song that has resonated so well with me. There are a few upbeat moments in the song that really helped to break up some of the deeper lyrics. However, I feel the real star of the show was White’s voice. From the second she sang the first word, I was drawn into the beauty of White’s vocals. She has a slight rasp to her voice, and it really helped me to interpret all of the emotions in her words. I have not heard a voice quite like Nikki White’s in quite a while. It’s unique, and it’s going to take her very far. Nikki White, a Canadian-based singer and songwriter, has been creating her own music since 2021. She only has three songs released so far, but each of them is incredibly powerful in its sounds and messages. Her debut, “Under My Skin,” paved the way for the future of her career. White’s music all has a similar overarching theme: combining a dark message with upbeat pop beats. With each song she releases, White hopes that, as she conquers her demons through her art, she can help others tame theirs as well. Nikki White is new to the scene, but it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that she is going to go really far in this industry. I personally cannot WAIT to hear what she releases next. “Minute After Minute” by ZAM, featuring Maiva, is an upbeat pop track about the uncertainty of love and the connection you can feel with a person. Sometimes this connection takes a while, or sometimes it happens in an instant, but regardless this connection can be dizzying and confusing. As ZAM sings: “just takes one look to drive me crazy.” You may not know where you stand with this person, or even understand what this person makes you feel, but you feel the strength of that bridge between you and now you just have to decide whether to pursue it or not. His vocals are layered perfectly over a lilting electronic melody that keeps the tension rising as the song heads toward the chorus. The chorus is vivid and fun and has catchy lyrics that keep the groove of the song going before dipping back down for Maiva’s verse. The melody has more fluidity for her verse, matching her smooth vocals, but bounces back for another rhythmic rendition of the chorus and bridge. Overall in this song, Maiva’s and ZAM’s voices are well balanced with the glittering instrumentals, creating an engaging track that demands to be played again! ZAM is a pop songwriter and singer based out of Germany. With a sound compared to other artists such as Ed Sheeran and QuinnXCII, ZAM has created a distinct mark with his music, touching on the familiar and popular while adding his own touch. EMMY has officially released her third single “Crying In My Boots,” a soft and forlorn song dedicated to a very specific type of loneliness that everyone’s experienced at some point or another. It’s an all-encompassing sadness that you keep trying to run from, but no matter how far you remove yourself from its roots, it’ll always follow you like a ghost. You’ll somehow end up drunk and wandering the streets, crying on your own. The instrumentals certainly help in keeping the song’s tone. “Crying In My Boots” is more subdued than a regular pop song; the synth, strings, percussion– everything– retains a mellowness that allows for the song’s lyrics to shine through, supported by instrumentals that exist to build upon its message. It's chill, moody, and perfect for a rainy night spent inside; "Crying In My Boots" is the kind of song that just keeps getting better as the track wears on. Anxiety will get the better of you every time if you let it. Its consistent nagging about the worst-case scenario is just one of its many symptoms and it’s one I hate. Charlie PS feels similarly. Her newest track Down to the Devil touches on these feelings under a Southern blues rock instrumental that has me begging for more. With some intense vocals, ripping guitar, and booming bass lines, the track follows all the key steps of a blues rock track. The production is thick, adding a griminess to the soundscape that is needed for the genre. The track is so relatable and wrapped up in one of my favorite genres. If you're a fan of artists like ZZ Ward and Grace Potter, you’ll love Charlie PS. She takes the gritty sounds of southern blues rock and mixes them with the modern sounds of pop rock to create what can only be described as a sonic melting pot. Her powerhouse vocals alongside vibrant guitar riffs are a nod to the 20th-century artists who influenced her but also a unique take on the genre. Her latest track “Down to the Devil” is the perfect example of these influences. As Charlie rips through the blues rock genre with her vocal abilities she sings of her tendency to consider the worst case scenarios. Charlie is a monster of lyricism and creativity. Utilizing an industrial chain as a live sample to call back to the original influences of the song. She found herself enamored by the southern instrumentals used in prison shows and the main hook of the record mirrors this element. Down to the Devil is a dynamic track with layers of intrigue that can be unwrapped with each listen. Southern blues is a genre rarely touched nowadays and Charlie PS does it justice with this catchy track. Charlie PS is a Vancouver-based musician who has rock pumping in her veins. This track is the second single to come off her upcoming EP Even If It Kills Me. The EP is set to drop in November but until then we have some amazing tracks to get us through the coming weeks. We all recognize Medusa's iconic look, don't we? The popular figure in Greek mythology possessed unique powers, capable of turning people to stone by just looking at them. And of course, who could forget those unmistakable snakes in her hair? In JZMYN's new single, " Medusa ," she explores the theme of a breakup. However, rather than taking a typical approach to it, she sings it from Medusa's perspective. It becomes an anthem of empowerment. She reclaims her power and confidence. Thomas Day just released his new song, “I Don’t Wanna Leave Just Yet,” and it's definitely going to be his next big hit. The song tells the story of an unexpected goodbye with a partner, and how you don’t want to leave them or the memories yet. In the first verse, Thomas expresses his frustrations about the ending of his relationship, saying that one wrong spark went off and now their whole relationship is in flames. He wants to go back to the good times of his relationship, but can’t. Thomas tells his girlfriend in the pre-chorus that he doesn’t expect her to give the last of her, “but, selfishly, [he’s] hoping that [she’ll] stay.” In the chorus, he says that he wants to cuddle in bed one more time, to hold onto the moment for as long as he can. He knows leaving is going to be rough, and he’s scared, but he says “I don’t wanna leave just yet.” Thomas goes into all of the warning signs that he ignored in the second verse. He says there was writing on the wall, “but [they’ll] lay here and watch them fall.” Thomas apologizes for being too attached and for holding on for too long, but he’s “tryna take it in before you’re gone.” He repeats the pre-chorus and chorus, and then he lets loose of his emotions in the bridge with the lyrics, “If we don’t have forever, just give me tonight.” Thomas is an artful singer and songwriter and doesn’t shy away from writing emotionally-charged lyrics. “I Don’t Wanna Leave Just Yet” is a beautifully raw piano ballad. The track features Thomas’ amazing voice, which starts off breathy in the verses but builds in the chorus. He ends each chorus with a beautiful, emotional belt of the title. The chord progression on the piano has some dissonance, which helps portray the strong emotions that he feels. “Ghost” is a single off Cassie Henderson's latest EP "The Pink Chapter", and it is a breakup song to break them all. “Ghost” is a heart wrenching story about grief and losing who someone is before losing them. Her use of poetic symbolism and storytelling display this pain in such a way that it appears almost beautiful. She uniquely describes the unspoken feelings that arise when feelings have faded. There isn’t a connection, and the awareness of that on both ends creates a tension not seen before in the relationship. “Ghost” describes what it is to watch someone lose themselves, and to go on to be haunted by the memories of who they once were, and even more so, who you were together. The song begins with a haunting sound, fitting to the title. It envelopes the attention of the listener while a piano and Cassie Henderson’s voice slowly join in, sounding hymn like. Her singing grows in volume, everything else going quiet as she gains the stage to tell this story. She sings with a beautiful but raspy voice, perfectly displaying an honest and passionate pain. When the chorus comes, it is an echo of her own voice treated as if it belonged to background singers, a reflection of the detachment she feels from herself and this person. As the song goes on, her imagery becomes more detailed and each verse gains speed and volume. That is, until the very end of the piece which leaves off on a near whisper of her chorus. Cassie Henderson is a New Zealand based singer and songwriter who skyrocketed her career at just fourteen years old by appearing on New Zealand’s The X Factor in 2014.
