Remember watching rom-com movies about teenagers in the Summertime when you were a kid and dreaming about falling in love like that someday? No? Just me? "SUMMER LOVE" is a pop punk ballad through-and-through with a heavy and distorted variety of electric guitars and drums that make you want to dance. I can imagine this song being performed at an outdoor punk festival and it being a crowd favorite. When a guy tells his friend, “you throw like a girl,” it always has a negative connotation of not being good enough. It is unfortunate that some men regard women as weak, both physically and emotionally. The reality is that women are much stronger than men give them credit for. In their powerful pop track, “Good For a Girl,” ELERI and Eӓdyth use their musical gifts to change the narrative. They use every aspect of the song to show their listeners just how strong women are. I feel that this track will change the minds of both women and men. Women will feel more empowered, while men may think twice before using the phrase “like a girl” ever again. One element of this track that I really liked was the instrumentation. The Spanish guitar sounded defiant. It starts out slow yet powerful in the beginning when ELERI sings “you think I’m a token, so you play me like an arcade.” The music gets stronger as the chorus nears. After the phrase, “pretty good for a girl,” the music becomes thunderous with claps in the background and ominous background vocals. This stylistic choice was a great way to demonstrate power. In the second verse, Eӓdyth adds fuel to fire with another powerful verse about how women are outnumbered by “rich white guys” who call women whiny and caution them not to have too many kids. You can really hear the emotion in both of their vocals. It makes the song that much more authentic when the singers are as passionate as they are. ELERI and Eӓdyth are two talented artists from the United Kingdom. ELERI (AKA Eleri Angharad) is known for having a country/pop sound. Her work has accumulated over 750,000 streams. If you want to hear more of her, I recommend “Snake Like You.” It is a song with a great guitar sound that reflects on being deceived. Eӓdyth is known for an electro sound and soulful vocals. The elements are evident on her song, “Heal Yourself.” This song is an upbeat track about the freedom of clearing your mind. Both women are powerful together and apart. Even as mother nature tries to take over, leave it to Boygenius to stand against the weather and put on an incredible performance. This group of three, consisting of Lucy Dacus, Julien Baker, and Phoebe Bridgers, has been making quite the name for themselves recently, and it’s clear why. The band is currently on tour to promote their debut album, “The Record,” and their sold-out Houston date was certainly a night to remember. While there were setbacks due to Houston’s infamous weather, the boys and staff were able to pull through and put on an incredible performance. A Boygenius concert is certainly a show to remember, especially if you get to experience it with your best friend. As soon as we arrived at the White Oak Music Hall, the venue for the show, it was pouring with strong winds, and we were met with groups of fans trying to hide from the rain under any form of roof they could find. The show was set to take place outside at the White Oak’s Lawn, so there was a worry about the show possibly being canceled. Due to the thunder, the fans were asked to wait in their vehicles until the storm cleared up. This is when we were told that the show would be pushed back until further notice. Credit should be given to the staff at White Oak Music Hall for their effort to adapt to the harsh situation that took place Thursday. Around 7:40, doors were opened, and people began to be let in. Unfortunately, the opener, Bartees Strange, was unable to perform due to the concert time being set back. At around 8:50, the show finally began, starting with the screen showing the boys performing “Without You Without Them” offstage. The first song to be sung onstage was “$20,” which is a great track to break the ice and get the audience moving. The way the stage was set up was Phoebe on the left, then Julien center, and then Lucy on her right, while their band was behind them. As individuals, Lucy, Julien, and Phoebe are known for their phenomenal lyricism, so together, Boygenius is a powerhouse, and getting to hear these incredibly transparent songs live is very surreal. By the time we had gotten to “Emily I’m Sorry,” which is a deeply emotional track, tears began to drop from my eyes, and it was hard to stop from then on until the end of the show. It was clear the audience was feeling the same level of intense emotion based on the way everyone’s singing sounded that night. In terms of genres, Boygenius is known to not have super heavy music, so for the middle of the set, it consisted of people swaying and singing along as they stood in awe of the boys’ talent. There was some light banter on stage, while the boys also thanked the audience for their patience and cooperation with the complications of the weather. When they arrived at the track “Me & My Dog,” the crowd grew in excitement as it is the group's most-known song. After a couple more songs, “Letter to an Old Poet” was played, which is the sequel song to “Me & My Dog” and hearing both on the same night made the experience much more moving. One of my personal favorite moments of the night was hearing “Not Strong Enough” live, and clearly, I wasn’t the only one that felt that way, considering how loud the crowd got at that moment. After the encore, there was only time for one more song so unfortunately “Please Stay” and “Favor” were skipped. Instead, only “Graceland Too” was the final track, and the song had to be restarted twice due to emergencies in the audience and having to get a few people out. Luckily the band noticed and was able to make sure everyone was safe. When the song was finally able to be played in full, it became the perfect end to a memorable night. Boygenius, a band consisting of three best friends who sing love songs about each other. They’re the perfect band to experience live with your friends, and I was fortunate enough to experience it with my best friend. While the night didn’t go exactly as planned and there were a lot of complications, it was still incredible, and a lot of credit should be given to those who are able to adapt to situations like these. Additionally, the crowd that night was incredibly kind to one another and in situations where people needed help, the audience assisted each other. I haven’t been fortunate enough to see a crowd that kind in a while. Overall, Boygenius’ concert in Houston was one I won’t forget as it truly was a breathtaking experience. What do you get when you mix Fountains of Wayne’s “Stacy’s Mom”, Hayley Kiyoko’s “Girls Like Girls”, and a whole lot of grunge angst? Jules Paymer’s dangerously thrilling and latest pop-punk single, “Mommy Issues”. The single reflects on when Paymer found themselves involved with an older woman. Maybe it was for the experience - or maybe it was a way to heal wounds left by their mother. Until it does, listeners will just have to fantasize through Paymer's song. “Mommy Issues” feels like the logical aftermath of Paymer’s “The Daughter That My Mother Wanted (feat. Miki Ratsula)”. Growing up in a home environment where a parent loves the idea of you rather than who you actually are leaves a profound impact. It makes a person yearn to be seen as they are. And if they cannot get this visibility from their parent, this emotional need will be fulfilled in a different area of their life. For our artist, this fulfillment came later in life in the form of an enticing older woman. The opening verses make it clear that Paymer is physically separating themselves from any resemblance of the life their mother had and wanted for them. They’re not interested in a home with “a white picket fence” and “a pool”. But this older woman has got them changing their mind – “playing house” might not be so bad after all. This leads into the guitar driven chorus that makes a listener miss 90s grunge, as Paymer admits that messing around with the older playmate is drawing attention to their own parental troubles. They bring up an important point in the following verse: “I’m really trying to recover / But don’t wanna heal too soon / The second I get over it / then I’m not under you”. There’s a misconception within the greater dating scene that you must be completely healed from any and all mental and emotional distresses before entering into a relationship. This notion forgets that some past hurts run too deep and will always linger. What’s needed to enter relationships is emotional maturity; despite the satirical nature of the single, “Mommy Issues” highlights that having self-awareness and a commitment to being honest about your issues can build a strong foundation for a relationship. Native Los Angeles resident, Jules Paymer, has been dropping nothing but bops since coming onto the music scene in 2021. Their debut single “Therapy”, set the tone for the artist’s prolific discography and what’s to be expected from them: singles filled with emotional relatability, catchy choruses, and themes centering on interpersonal relationships.
