- Review: “History” - Joel Corry x Becky Hill
A homage to the history and stories created in previous relationships, "History" puts into words that "even after all the pain, I'd do it all again". It's easy to say after a painful relationship that it is easier to move on and forget, yet after being wrapped together in memories sometimes the history together is too much. Joel Corry and Becky Hill combine these feelings with upbeat electronic dance music to create a complementary sound to tell these stories. From its beginning "History" is extremely upbeat. While the beats and music as a whole have a more upbeat feel to them, the lyrics of the song detail a bittersweet revelation. Even after a painful relationship, given the history of the couple they would do it all again. Becky's voice perfectly complements the music giving a more soulful and. rich feeling to contrast the sharp snares within the music. The two aspects combine during the choruses, where both the vocals and music match up to create an upbeat and hopeful sound. Although beginning out bittersweet, the pair does an amazing job of keeping the song's atmosphere upbeat and happy. With over 18 million monthly streams on spotify, Joel Corry is easily one of the more influential people within dance music. After a breakthrough with his single “Sorry” Joel soon began collaborations with artists such as David Guetta and Saweetie. This RIAA Platinum Dj and producer has released this newest track in conjunction with BRIT Award winning artist Becky Hill.Coming to fame after competing on The Voice UK, her collaboration with Oliver Heldens topped charts. Beginning her career young as a teenerager with the group Shaking Trees, she began to become sought out by dance artists as a result of her soul-like voice. Together the pair has brought together an excellent combination of vocals and dance beats. Written By Gillian Mena FOLLOW JOEL CORRY: FOLLOW BECKY HILL:
- Review: "Coming Down" - Natalia Salter
Silken sheets bounce the soft light of flickering flames atop ornate candles but there's no supple love or bright romance when you are left all alone with your thoughts your only company. "Coming Down", the debut single by Natalia Salter, is rife with somber, indulgent imagery of the denial stage of losing someone you loved through every fault of your own. You might have recognized you are to blame for the abrupt end, but the vigor for the love you lived still moves in you. Natalia explores the complexities of this brutal emotion in-depth, revealing both beauty and fear. Introduced by simple piano and light, airy vocals, "Coming Down" builds slowly with the steady stacking of instrumental layers culminating in the full and vibrant emotion that takes us to the track's end. The indulgent lyricism is kept simple to allow the somber, indulgent message and fine-tuned musicality to sit in their deserved limelight. The understated piano and percussion combine to form the main body of the song's sturdy frame that allows Natalia's vocals to float along with ease. Natalia Salter is an English artist of Peruvian descent who splits her time between London and Valencia. In recent years she has worked on collaborations with various artists including Kygo, Tim Gallagher, and Rose Gray. Her affinity for melancholic, cinematic soundscapes, inspired by the likes of Sionead O'Connor , plants Natalia firmly in the same category as groups like Beach House and Big Thief . We sit and wait for the rest of her debut EP with some serious antici ... pation. Written By George McSherry FOLLOW NATALIA:
- Review: "Teenage Renegade" - Robinson
Many teenagers are excited for the freedoms that come with adulthood, but many also don’t fully realize the unique beauty of their stage of life. “Teenage Renegade” by Robinson elicits nostalgia for a part of your life when you were carefree and reckless, entirely present in every moment. She jumps back and forth between then and now–essentially between the stress and anxiety associated with adulthood and the wild hope of childhood–all while suggesting that joy and spontaneity don’t have to be confined to the past. “Teenage Renegade” opens with an airy staccato beat that builds towards the chorus, which brings an ecstatic explosion of drums and guitar chords mirroring those of the underlying backing track. It also showcases Robinson’s expansive vocal range as she reminisces about her wild younger self in lines such as “She was a blue hot summer in the middle of July/She wanted everything she couldn’t have/And nothing made her cry.” Directly following this is the titular phrase “I was a teenage renegade/I’d end up so afraid,” showing Robinson’s wish to recapture the spirit and livelihood of her younger self. The teenage years are often heralded as the last years of true youth–of living carefree and of pursuing fun and joy with abandon. While adulthood does bring its responsibilities, “Teenage Renegade” subtly shows that the two don’t need to live in complete juxtaposition. Hailing from New Zealand, 26-year-old pop artist Anna Robinson has made an impact on the music community since her debut single “Don’t You Forget About Me” in 2017. Her single “Nothing to Regret” is certified platinum in New Zealand and double platinum in Australia, and garnered her many nominations such as the 2019 New Zealand Vodafone Music Awards for Breakthrough Artist of the Year and Single of the Year. Additionally, she was one of Vevo DSCVR’s Ones to Watch 2019 and YouTube’s Artists to Watch 2019. Robinson’s impressive resume doesn’t stop at nominations, however. In addition to supporting touring artists like Hayley Kiyoko and Lany, she recently performed at Brighton’s Great Escape Festival and SXSW, and headlined a sold-out show at London’s Queen of Hoxton. Robinson’s successes are far from over, and it’s a privilege to get to watch them play out. Written By Adelae Norwood FOLLOW ROBINSON:
- Review: "Set Free" - Dr Jaymz
“Set Free” is an anthem about letting go to heal and comfort yourself. Though it seems like an easy concept to do, letting go is so much more complicated than it sounds. How can you just stop thinking, stop caring, and stop worrying about something that you’ve held close to your heart? But some things that are close to your heart are not necessarily healthy for you to have, and letting go is a normal part of healing from trauma. Dr Jaymz uses ethereal synths to add a more motivational aspect to the song. The stripped-down vocals enhanced with the wispy voice add a layer of mysteriousness and wisdom, imploring you to listen and let go. The pulsating bass adds a danceable and catchy nature to the song, reminiscent of house sounds from other artists like Clean Bandit or David Guetta. As a British minister who’s preached to 80,000 people, Dr Jaymz has incorporated the underlying sense of Peace, Love, and Unity in the harmonies and beats of the EDM experience. Gospel has roots in tons of other genres, but Dr Jaymz is determined to combine his gospel with infectious beats and soaring melodies, able to preach through music and lead the charge to a new dawn of fulfillment. Releasing a new track every month, Dr Jaymz is sure to serve up some interesting mixtures together within this new curated EDM experience. Written By Megan Cao FOLLOW DR JAYMZ:
- Interview: "Stories" - Stiles Brisson
I am obsessed with the vibe of your new single “Stories”!! Can you share the story behind this new track? Stiles: Thank you so much ! yeah, it’s definitely a feel-good vibe. It’s actually kinda funny to be honest; after releasing my first single “Monday’s” (which was honestly just cuz we could), I realised how much fun this music thing was and it got pretty serious. After that, I knew that I just HAD TO put out something else. At the time of writing “Stories” I was in my cute little “bedroom pop” and “bossa nova” phase, and that’s where the chords for “Stories” come from: bossa nova. There are 2 versions of “Stories”: the OG one that I put out about 2 years ago and the one we just put out (cuz the intro was too long haha). I'm pretty grateful for where the song got me so far though ! It’s the song that got me signed to Live Nation as a recording artist. A kickstart to the kick start of my career. Here's to many more. When did you start singing and playing the guitar? Did you instantly know music was something you wanted to pursue long term? Stiles: Music was always on in the house. We listened to everything ! If you grow up with music, it just makes sense to you. My mum would always tell us when we hit the wrong note, even at age 4, she definitely helped with how I view music. I've been singing my whole life but I think it’s just recently that I've been starting to sing professionally. I'm lucky enough to have been born into a music loving family. I feel like if you’d have to label my taste in music it’d definitely be hard; I listened to classical musicians like “Tchaikovsky”, all the way to “Rage Against the Machine” and “The 1975”, throw some “Nirvana”, “Shawn Mendes'', “Hozier'' and “Kirk Franklin” - all over the place. “Jimmy Hendrix” and I think it was “One Direction” were part of the reason I picked up guitar. I heard “Little Things” and went ‘I wanna do that’ then I heard “Smells Like Teen Spirit” from Nirvana and went like ‘YO I NEEEEED TO LEARN GUITAR’. long story short, I started playing at 13. Who is an artist you would love to collaborate with one day? Stiles: Can’t keep it to one there’s so many ! definitely Jacob Collier, DODIE, Gracie Abrams, Doja Cat and Tyler the Creator Congrats on performing at Lollapalooza Paris!! Can you tell us a bit about your experience there? Stiles: Lolla Paris was definitely something ! Being able to say that I played at the same event as Måneskin, ASAP Rocky, and many of the greats, is an honour honestly. I played at the Kidzapalooza stage so it wasn’t that big of a stage but we all gotta start somewhere. I’m down for every single Lollapalooza festival happening around the globe honestly, a cool festival for sure. What is the number one goal on your bucket list when it comes to your music career? Stiles: To only improve, no matter the point in my career - whether it’s musically, socially or mentally, I’d want to say that I’m happy with the material I put out. I can't wait for the day where I’m in an arena or stadium or ANYWHERE and have people screaming the lyrics I write and love. With that comes the ability to help people and that’s what I wanna do with my music: help people in any way and let them know that I’ll always be a safe space. I guess now that I think of it more, the number one goal is to create a loving and legendary community. What can we expect from you next?! I genuinely can’t wait to follow your career and see where this journey takes you! Stiles: I’ll be doing more rock and r&b, probably put out a few feel goods here and there cuz it’s fun ! I mean, I have over 30 songs just begging to be recorded, most of them are either alternative rock or r&b some are even folk and some are electronic. Rock or rnb will never die and that’s a fact. The songs in the works are definitely well rounded and different, in all the best ways and I can’t wait for everyone to listen. Interviewed By Sarah Curry FOLLOW STILES:
- Review: "Bloom" - Melanie Wehbe
Growing up in Sweden, Melanie Wehbe learned at a young age that music was her most genuine avenue of self expression. Since her childhood, Melanie has blossomed as a songwriter, with writing credits on multiple songs to reach the number one spot on both Spotify and the radio. Melanie has also written two songs for entry into Eurovision, as well as music for the winner of Swedish idol. Despite her acclaim as a songwriter, Melanie has only just released her debut EP, “Bloom” behind a string of singles dating back to 2016. Her experience within the music industry is apparent in the production of the project, as the beautifully orchestrated instrumentals and Wehbe’s immense vocal talent have led to her being proclaimed one of Sweden’s best hidden talents. “Bloom” is a project dedicated to growth and change as a person (blooming, if you will), a fitting topic accompanying Wehbe’s journey from a behind the scenes contributor to becoming a well known artist in her own right. The title track hits on numerous pitfalls of self actualization–the insecurity that accompanies freely expressing yourself and the struggle to find love for yourself beyond that of external forces. Despite her desire to find herself, Wehbe does seek comfort and familiarity, which takes the form of a partner. Wehbe makes it clear that this person is her safe space, her “paradise” where she can find her inner peace and grow as a person. Wehbe’s adoration for this person makes an important point about what bettering yourself truly means. It is not a process inherently reliant on stark individuality, but instead one that can depend on outside forces we cannot control. In this way, she likens life to a flower, needing the right circumstances in which to bloom. The instrumental supporting Wehbe is a gorgeously arranged composition. The instrumental is carried by a lush string section playing long, sustained chords, with a piano adding a sense of rhythm and motion in the background. The choruses see the majority of the instruments drop out, leaving only the strings, underscoring the raw emotion of Wehbe’s vocals. The verse then features the return of the rhythm section, with the addition of a chugging guitar and the initial entry of the drums. The poignancy of the strings and piano juxtaposed against the energy of the guitar and drums evokes a feeling of confidence despite the sentimentality of the song’s subject matter. There is a determination in Wehbe’s desire to grow and find herself, regardless of what that might entail. Written By Liam Dun FOLLOW MELANIE WEHBE:
- Interview: "Super Love" - June
Congratulations on the release of your new single “Super Love!” Would you mind sharing what past life experiences inspired you to write this new track? June: Super Love is about the manifestation of love, want and desire! I wrote this song based on past experience in the hope that someone feels the way that I do when it comes to dating. Subconsciously I wrote the hook, expressing how I internally felt about my doubts with new romantic relationships. Super Love is that awaking song filled with honesty! When did you start getting into music, songwriting and performing? Was it something you knew you wanted to pursue right off the bat? June: Music for me started at the age early age of four. I started playing classical piano and that slowly progressed into my singing. At age sixteen I had my first opportunity to work in a studio making music. June: He’s amazing and immensely talented as expected! Thankful to be working with him in all his excellence and patience. Super Love wouldn’t be what it is without him. What do you hope to accomplish in your career? And how do you hope to redefine the music industry? June: My goal in my career is to inspire other women of color to break specifically into pop music. I am so excited to see where this journey takes you!! June: I’m thrilled to show my versatility when it comes to writing! Expect the unexpected when it comes to my sound. If you need a new song to listen to and vibe with during the month of August, "August Skies (feat. Holly Brooke) by Fearn should definitely be added to your next shuffle. Accompanying the beautiful and petite lyrics and melodic passages were these amazing synths, electronic music and cinematic sounds that captivated the listener. If you were to close your eyes it truly feels like you are laying down on a hill staring at the beautiful 'August Skies!' "August Skies (feat. Holly Brooke) by Fearn, truly makes the listener picture the song in their mind. On top of the beautifully written lyrics, throughout the song it has these cinematic synths, electronic music and a few bird chirps that help create this movie-like-scene in the audience's mind, where they are watching the protagonist lay down on a hill staring at the 'August Skies,' specifically the sun, painting the sky with its golden stripes mixed with violet, pink and red. - Interview: "Promise" - Faith Louise
Q: This song is so upbeat and fun! What is the meaning behind it? Faith: This song is about being in a relationship and that partner cheating. This is about the realization of this and saying I'll do better and they'll regret it. Q: What is the songwriting process like for you? Faith: The songwriting process I would usually go for is hearing the track, choosing a topic and writing lyrics. For this track, I had a few lyric and melody ideas saved in my notes for ages and thought it was time to give them a whirl ! I sent them off with a few song inspirations and then wrote the rest of the song to the incredible track that was created. Q: If you had to pick a favorite song, which one would it be? You can only pick one! Faith: I always say I never have a favorite song! And that is true I can't possibly pick just one. But at the moment I am loving Hurricane Ella Henderson, Ofenbach. Q: Who are some of your biggest musical influences? Faith: Some of my biggest musical inspirations currently are artists like Becky Hill, Talia Mar and Chung Ha. These ladies are true inspo for the style of music I love and want to create. Q: What do you like to do when you’re not writing music? Faith: When I'm not writing music, I'm probably sleeping, eating or finding the next k-drama to watch. I have also just gotten back into musical theatre, so you'll probably find me there too! Always finding my way back to a stage. Q: What inspires you to continue creating music? Faith: The fact that people enjoy listening to my music definitely inspires me to keep doing it. I also love how natural it feels and the feeling I get when I step into a studio. Interviewed By Kendall Koval FOLLOW FAITH:
- Review: "Green Thumb" - Jet City Sports Club
Jet City Sports Club released their newest track titled "Green Thumb." This sunny melody is an excellent Indie Rock piece that combines cheerful guitar notes with warm vocals from Lilla Obradovic. This song is about when someone is moving away from you, almost as if your relationship with them is withering away. This song compares a withering relationship to gardening. Lines such as "I had a green thumb, maybe I should give it up" as well as "sorry that you're wilting why can't you tell me how you're feeling?" make this connection. This song creates a relationship between saving something that's dying, such as a beautiful garden, to saving a dying relationship. It's a really neat take on this topic and is a fresh angle on such an emotional topic. Despite the fact that this piece concerns the topic of a relationship coming to an end, it is a very bright and cheerful song. The strong guitar chords, as well as the prominent drum, beat animate this song. Another strong aspect of this song is Obradovic's voice. Her voice is warm as honey and has such a soothing sound to it. Her vocals mesh beautifully with the instruments of this piece. I also really enjoyed the story behind this piece. I feel like with love songs it's very difficult to write a track that will stand out from the rest, but Jet City Sports Club succeeded in creating a different take. I personally have never heard a song comparing the decay of a wonderful relationship to the withering of a beautiful garden. Then to compare the person salvaging the relationship to a gardener with a green thumb was such a wonderful idea. This song is truly enjoyable to listen to and embodies such lively vibes. Jet City Sports Club is an Indie rock band from the sunny city of Sydney. Their music is inspired by 90s guitar notes as well as Pop and Aussie Indie. This band got their start in the height of the 2020 quarantine and hopped in the studio the first chance they got to write their 5 track EP. In just under two years they have established themselves in the Aussie scene by heralding as Triple J's first 'Lunchtime Legends' of the 2021 Requestival week for their track 'Redfern Station' and with constant playlisting. Now with over 150k listens over multiple platforms Jet City Sports Club is prepared to continue their rise on the Indie music scene. Written By Melina Darlas FOLLOW JET CITY SPORTS CLUB:
- Review: "Denim" - Madison Deaver
In relationships, it’s important to have an equal balance of power and respect–but that’s not always the case. Madison Deaver’s new single “Denim” calls out the perpetrator in one such situation, brutally revealing his true nature and exposing him to be pathetic instead of powerful. Featuring strong, energetic guitar riffs, a compelling melody and amped-up vocals, the song deliciously demeans the ex-lover in question and places Deaver back on top. “Denim” opens with high energy garage-rock chords, immediately establishing itself as a striking rock anthem as it explicitly details one (ex) lover’s power trip and puts them in their place. In the lines “now he’s wearing me out does he think that I’m denim” and “he must think that he’s holy/tries to patch me up/with money like he owns me,” Deaver implies that he only saw her as an object that could be bought, essentially calling him out as “delicate.” This sentiment is fully vocalized later on in a thrillingly vengeful sequence including lines such as “pants down and he’s so embarrassed,” “baby we’re not in love/and you’re so full of shit,” and finally “you can go suck my dick.” The song is demeaning in the most satisfyingly possible way as Deaver vocalizes many sentiments that are often felt and more rarely stated. It’s cathartic in its controlled takedown of the man who thought he could buy love by the woman who proved he couldn’t. Madison Deaver has been passionately pursuing a career in music since a young age, and is no stranger to the industry. She works directly with producers to create and hone both the lyrics and the overall sound of her songs, resulting in a signature sound reminiscent of Ska, Indie Pop, and 80’s Garage Band. As represented in “Denim,” her lyrics are quirky and tongue-in-cheek as she unabashedly shares what she really thinks, refusing to pull any of her punches. Since the release of “Denim” she’s booked multiple gigs, further establishing herself as a rising voice in the music world that is here to stay. Written By Adelae Norwood FOLLOW MADISON DEAVER:
- Interview: "Therapy" - Love Fae
Congratulations on your new catchy single “Therapy”! Can you share the story behind this track? Love Fae: Why thank you so much 🧚♀️ First it was so fun to even name this track this because of how supportive I am for anyone seeking help for your brain. I adore writing storytelling music and with this track it truly captured the essence of what it is to feel euphoria, shame and acceptance all in one. With that being said, I take something that is truly deep like “heartbreak/grief” and make it into a bit more of a light hearted bop. When did your love for music begin? Was it something you always knew you wanted to pursue one day? Love Fae: The story began when my mother and father met at a concert…literally. So the moment I came into the world my whole musical family (Uncle and dad were in a band, brother played the drums, sister played the guitar, and my Grandad wrote and played country music) fed my ears with legends like The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Yes, Bon Jovi, Queen, Peter Gabriel..and along the way I personally got really into Motown and 1950’s swing. My parents have always told me I had a good ear and pretty much sang anything I could from a young age. After doing some theatre and vocal lessons, I found myself auditioning for the Voice and X Factor at 18/19 and almost making it on both of the shows. It was really around that time I realized “Hey I just might have a knack for this” and kind of just went from there. Can you take us through what your songwriting process looks like? Love Fae: I use to have notebooks and a tumblr filled with poetry (soooo hipster 😎😝) Some of my first songs began with me taking little pieces of my poems and coming up with random melodies in my head. I didn’t have any fancy equipment or anyone at the time to produce any tracks for me. Now when I finally got in touch with the right people and got creative with my resources, things really started to bloom (I always said I was a flower in a past life hehe 🌼). I find it really fun to collaborate and work with like minded people. I’m not the best at playing instruments, but I have a lot of musical knowledge..and my good ear comes in handy when deciding/coming up with a particular sound for an instrumental part. I was looking through your Instagram and you have such amazing fashion sense!! What person or era of fashion would you say is your biggest inspiration? Love Fae: I adore this question! I’ve always thought outside the box with my taste in fashion ever since I dressed up as Godzilla in my preschool parade. In Highschool I really adapted the 1950’s rockabilly look and wore saddle shoes to school, tied my hair in victory rolls and got bangs. Since then I’ve kept my bangs for over a decade and really just love to sport bright colors and quirky pieces; there is no denying I find inspiration more so from the 60’s and 70’s though. As far as people…Melanie Martinez is someone I really look up to as far as fashion and music..she’s the bee’s knees 🐝 What do you enjoy doing when you’re not making music? Love Fae: Daydreaming ☁️☁️ Haha! I’m a true Pieces though..my brain is always in another place! But really I just enjoy any kind of creative thing..I do hair for a living and call all my clients my “canvases” and have much passion for the industry. Being outside, going to live shows and rollerblading are also some other things I really enjoy doing. What can we expect next from you?! More music or even an album, I hope!! :) Love Fae: Not to be cliche..but lots of singles! I just released another track called “Homewrecker” and plan on releasing about two more in the upcoming months. I’m a late bloomer (spoiler alert 🚨 ) and I have a lot of catching up to do ✨ Interviewed By Sarah Curry FOLLOW LOVE FAE:
