- Review: "Leaves Fall" - Audrie Powell
In a new single that both revitalises Audrie Powell’s country roots and acts as an ode her lover, “Leaves Fall” tells the story of life and love. Powell grew up in a small town in Idaho, and after moving to Portland, Oregon, felt as if she lost herself to the more populated culture, forgetting about her small town roots. This new single explains her life now after reconnecting with an old friend, now turned boyfriend. She states “He brought me back to my roots, taking me camping, back to nature, and, most importantly, back to listening to country/folk music again.” This track is about living in the moment and appreciating natural things, the leaves falling in the colder seasons and the feeling of genuine love late into the night. Starting with a simple guitar strumming, she completes the soundscape and sets the scene with the sounds of a car starting and leaves crunching. In the chorus, she sings “Leaves fall can barely catch the moment / Never been a materialistic person / And I’m on the tailgate of his truck / The sun goes down but he lifts me up / When life moves fast hold on to what's important”. Her voice is emotive and rich, and pairs perfectly with a simple backing. Her lyrics are descriptive and tell stories, describing a scene the two shared late at night sipping whiskey and talking about wedding rings. Along with the beautiful storytelling within this track, there is a short film featuring Powell and her boyfriend, Oregon native Brady Deene Johnson. The film follows the two as their love grows, buying a house together, painting and decorating, and growing old in the place that fostered their young love. Audrie Powell doesn't remember a time when music wasn't a staple in her life. “My mother even says I sang my first words,” she says, and she remembers standing on tables for guests and impromptu performances in restaurants for anyone who would listen. After moving out of her small town, she fell victim to caring more about current trends in music and artistry than staying true to herself. She recounts feeling disappointed in herself after shows, knowing she was not being genuine. After falling in love with Johnson, she says he reignited her small town roots, and now she feels so much more like her old self. Thank you to Johnson for bringing out the best in Powell, and thank you to Powell for prioritizing genuineness over what sells nowadays. - Review: "deserve it" - Ofir Sandler
Ofir Sandler released her latest track “deserve it” on June 26, 2025. This song is about the hard truth that society faces when those in control of certain situations simply don’t care who gets hurt. We live in a world where things are changing every single day whether it's for the good of society and in some cases for the worst. These changes are becoming a huge issue to many as change is scary. But what’s even more terrifying is the effect it has on millions due to the lack of heart and understanding. If you have ever felt disconnected or unprotected in a world where you are supposed to be shielded from such actions, then “deserve it” is just for you and remember that you are never alone. Ofir Sandler has the most breathtaking and ear catching voice I have ever heard. I am in awe of her vocals every single time I listen to a track of hers. “deserve it” opens up with an amazing melody which quickly shifts into her outstanding lyrics and beat. I thought the upbeat sound of this track paired well with the message of the song, as it gives off a feeling of hope and better days to come. Not to mention how strong and intense the lyrics were with lines like “Oh but the hits keep coming / Oh can you see I’m bleeding out.” My absolute favorite part of the track was the drum solo towards the end as it was so different and all around powerful. Ofir Sandler is a singer/songwriter from Liverpool, United Kingdom. The artist is originally from the Middle East but moved to the UK and has been there ever since. She released her first ever single in 2019 titled “Shine” and has since released often. In the past year she has created three amazing tracks all of which fall under that of the alternative indie pop rock genre. If you haven’t already, I strongly encourage you to give her music a listen as you will not be disappointed. In everything she creates you can hear the vulnerability and honesty throughout. Also don’t forget to follow her social medias down below and never miss out on another fantastic release. - Review: "sad disco girl" - Matilda
The incredible singer-songwriter, Matilda, has released her latest song which is the ultimate catchy, sad girl anthem for the summertime. "sad disco girl" tells a story that is all too familiar and relatable for everyone. Sadness can come and go in waves for all of us, even during "fun times" when it is almost expected for you to be happy - like during the summer months. In "sad disco girl," Matilda makes it clear to listeners that its okay to not feel 100% your best all the time. Even if others or society may add more pressure to strive for emotional, physical, or mental perfection, Matilda acknowledges that this is not always possible, and that it's okay. Sometimes, one of the only ways to overcome summertime blues is by putting on a pretty mask, getting around people you care about, and dancing away whatever sadness is weighing you down. With lyrics like "I'm pretty but pretty sad, too" and "I wish that I'd be fine alone, but I can't stand the quiet, so anyone’s invited" Matilda makes everyone feel heard and supported while listening to "sad disco girl". While Matilda's lyrics tell a relatable, understanding message, the overall sound of "sad disco girl" adds to the message even more. The song balances a sound that is a perfect blend of dreamy, melancholy, and lively. During the bridge and verses, the songs leans heavily into this melancholy, dream-like vibe that builds off the impactful lyrics. When the chorus comes in, the tempo picks up with catchy background music and these rhythmic, pulsating beats that you can feel within you. The shifts between the slower verses and the more upbeat chorus resembles highs and lows: sadness being masked by exhilarating experiences while chasing after happiness. Matilda's powerful vocals add a lot of warmth to the song from the beginning until the very end. The lyrics are heavy with emotions and sticks with you while listening, but her voice as she sings feels hopeful, making it hard to resist singing or dancing along to fight away your sadness. Swedish singer-songwriter, Matilda, is a visionary who creates unforgettable and emotional electronic-pop music. Her upbringing in a small village, her experience with busking in Australia, and her time as a student at Berklee College of Music all greatly influenced her music. Matilda also draws inspiration for her music from powerful queer and female artists. All of Matilda's songs balance vulnerable storytelling and cathartic melodies. As an advocate for mental health within the music industry, Matilda's songs explore a variety of vulnerable, important themes, such as mental health, codependency, queerness, and self-discovery. Additionally, Matilda is a very talented, self-sufficient artist who creates her own stage outfits herself from second-hand finds. Currently, Matilda is finishing up a debut album, a fifteen track exploration of her life and her emotions. Written By Kyler Griggs FOLLOW MATILDA: Instagram | Spotify | TikTok | Facebook | YouTube

The mood of the song then completely shifts and goes into the most beautiful guitar strings being played. Pairing with the amazing sound throughout the track was her voice that was so gentle and caring at every possible second. - Review: "is there something (i don't know)" - kylekelly
kylekelly recounts meeting someone named Laney at a strip mall after the girl he liked put him “on a shelf”. He calls her a danger to his health as he becomes a part of a love triangle. When this leaves him in a rut, he copes with music and solitude. He sings “I’ve been staring at my ceiling/ clutched six strings” and “chugging alcohol/ still say nothing” becoming a danger to himself in a rush of false hope. The chorus fluctuates between “is there something I don’t know?” to “is there something, I don’t know” as he questions the state of his relationship with this person. He’s been “doing flips and rolls” with a conversation that’s “delusional” as he wonders if he has a chance. The song closes with little to no closure for the listener or kylekelly, which develops the authenticity of his emotional storytelling. “Is there something (i don't know)” begins with a cinematic indie-pop vibe with stretched synths and soft vocals. The track slowly increases tempo with rolling drums and a standout guitar pattern. When it gets up to speed, kylekelly adds passionate vocals that border on a light pop angst. He takes a break with an effective bridge that grabs attention for the next verse. kylekelly’s soundscape includes pop instrumentals with a punk vocal flair that balances the song and merges genres. Playful vocal runs demonstrate a commitment to the track that celebrates organic sound. kylekelly’s new release communicates the struggle of love triangles with bright tones and excellent production. Kylekelly is an upcoming artist with over 30K listeners on Spotify. His sound is light and catchy paired with sometimes punky vocals. He released his first single “my little heart <3” along with other single “HOW IS THIS GONNA END?” in 2024. - Album Review: "growing down" - salem ilese
On June 13th, 2025, salem ilese released her sophomore album “growing down”. She teased the release of this album with singles such as “I’M NOT SCARED” and “hahaha”. This album is written and produced by salem ilese as well as David Arkwright. She held an exclusive preview on June 11th at Licorice Pizza Records in Studio City, California. TRACK LIST I'M NOT SCARED hahaha if you love me... fridge growing down new in town dirty martini storm Born on August 19th, 1999 in Mill Valley, California, salem ilese is an American singer and songwriter. Her career began at the age of 10, when she took songwriting classes with Bonnie Hayes. She also attended Berklee College of Music, majoring in Hayes’ songwriting program for two years. Her first EP was released in 2019 under the label Homemade Projects. She is best known for her singles “Mad at Disney” and “PS5” which experienced social media virality. Other artists she has written for include Bella Poarch and Demi Lovato. I'M NOT SCARED This track depicts the bittersweet sensation that comes with a new relationship. Forming a new connection is scary, and you’re unsure whether or not they match your feelings or if they’re going to change their mind suddenly and leave you in the dust. “I’M NOT SCARED” starts with ilese trying to convince herself that she is secure in the relationship, but eventually admits in the chorus that she is actually terrified. The minimalist instrumental in the introduction and first verse is brought to an exciting climax in the chorus by electric guitars once she admits the truth. The different titling compared to the other songs on the album for this track complements the desperation and further develops the narrative value. The excitement from the chorus carries over into the next verse, driving the song to its end with powerful vocals. hahaha “hahaha” starts with exposed vocals over a single guitar track, pulling listeners into a different mood than the previous song. Life’s hardships can be discouraging in the moment. However, sometimes you get to the point where you can look back and laugh. That’s what salem ilese wanted to describe in the second song on her album. This track takes an optimistic outlook, saying that even if you are going through hard times, at some point you will be able to look back and laugh. The bridge experiences a mood shift, with the repetitive melody and lyrics about how bad things can get illustrating an anxious feeling. However, it returns to the optimism of the chorus, mirroring how things can get better. if you love me... The word that comes to mind when describing “if you love me…” is no doubt “vulnerable”. Ilese sings over an acoustic guitar, vocals exposed and isolated. The worst thing about amicable breakups is that sometimes they are harder to get over than the messy ones. You want to hate them, but you can’t, because they didn’t do anything to intentionally hurt you. With the instrumental emphasizing mainly guitar and harmonies in the vocals, it is able to mirror the vulnerability and grief present within the lyrics. This song maintains a consistent energy comparable to the rest of the album, making it mellow but not boring. The lyrics are something that will touch listeners’ souls as they reflect on their own experiences through the narrative presented. fridge Although most media in pop culture idealize the exciting newness of a relationship and the messy aspects that make it thrilling, salem ilese’s “fridge” takes on a new perspective. Ilese describes the beauty in domesticity, expressing the desire to intertwine lives on a personal and intimate level in each other’s home. The track begins with vocals over an electric guitar, but adds in background vocals and energetic percussion as her requests become more earnest. I find it incredibly beautiful that the backing track emphasizes various components and instruments throughout the song, acting as a taste test of ilese’s skillful artistry. growing down The title track of this album immediately presents a distinctiveness with its vocal distortion in the introduction. Ilese illustrates the feeling of being mature in childhood and childish in adulthood in her song “growing down”. However, she takes an innovative approach to this narrative, by describing it in an optimistic way. This is a topic that has been broached before, with feeling even more lost and confused as you gain experience and age, and usually focuses on the negative aspects of this experience. Ilese chooses to embrace is as a part of life, inviting others to join her with exciting percussion and guitars that create a sense of adventure. Various sound samples in the instrumental create a tastefully “messy” sound that adds to the overall narrative impact. new in town The introduction to “new in town” consists of vocals over synths that create a melancholic feeling. Ilese depicts the experience of watching the honeymoon phase fade away, and the person you’re with starting to look at you as if you’re nothing extraordinary. It’s a painful feeling, and you idealize the sweetness of the beginning while begging for another chance at it. Ilese urges her partner to look at her as if they don’t know each other, and to return to the effort they used to put in. The electronic background and lyrics ornamented with vocal harmonies add to the devastation. dirty martini The concept of the girls’ night out has been discussed and romanticized in the past, and for good reason. salem ilese offers us a fun track about wanting to party with friends with “dirty martini”. Upbeat vocals provide the melodic content and drive the energy of the song, which is refreshing to see, further demonstrating her innovative artistic style. My favorite part about this song is that the drum beats sound like the tapping of feet on a dance floor, complementing the imagery in the lyrics. This is the perfect song to play when you’re getting ready for a night out with your girls. storm The final track of this album, “storm”, has a sort of grungy sound. Upbeat, but with a certain intensity to it that matches the content of the lyrics. This song describes how tough life can get. Sometimes, the hurdles are too tall, and you get knocked down. However, just like a storm ends, you can bring yourself back after a hard time. This song is about embracing the bad days and knowing that an emotionally rich life has both ups and downs. This song is the perfect message to leave with listeners as Ilese closes out her album. As an artistic work as a whole, “growing down” is a comprehensive piece that indulges in the various emotions and sensations of the human experience. Especially beautiful is salem ilese’s emphasis on the idea that things get better. In a world where people want to constantly feel doomed, this is a refreshing attitude. The final song, “storm”, is my favorite. It has a beautifully constructed instrumental that complements the lyrics about things getting better. In the modern era, sometimes what we need is a reminder that life can be truly beautiful, even at its worst. - Review: "Anyway" - Jodie Austen
Jodie Austin’s “Anyway” explores the dynamic of creeping in and out of love with robust vocals and a springing soundscape. She sings “ your smile, your face, your cheekbones, your grace ” when “ recklessly ” falling for this person. She is exhilarated by the opportunity to “ love again ” as she communicates her fears in intimate whispers. Her new lover seems to hate themselves despite her love, and the light they give her. They told her they were “ going to be fine ” but led her astray and deceived her. Punched by the sour taste of betrayal, Jodie sings “I loved you/ and you choose to hate yourself anyway, ” still hoping they are okay. She triumphs through a series of “ anyways ” that deliver a carefree perspective on the situation. She ends with a sincere “ I hope you’re okay ” to restate her care. Acoustic guitar with knocking taps on the body introduce Jodie’s thorough vocals. A quiet background soundscape allows her to shine with her sentimental descriptors. She increases the volume to build up to the chorus, followed by growing instrumentals and humming vocals that resonate. The chorus serves as a breakthrough that slices through somber reflection. Passionate vocals immerse listeners into a state of understanding as lyrics drag them through Jodie’s account. Delicate vocal runs add complexity to the soundscape and showcase Jodie’s skill. This is paired with deep vocals that accentuate the message and sound of the track. Improvisation in the last few lines of the track lead to an abrupt ending that yearns for closure. Jodie Austin is an upcoming singer/songwriter that was raised in Australia and is based in the UK. Her debut single “Anyway” impresses with flowery soundscapes and strong vocals. This single was originally written as a love note, and was complete after the relationship ended, adding to her authenticity as a storyteller, and artist. The track was produced by Ed Graves, and Jodie notes that she was inspired by Joni Mitchell and Gracie Abrams to tell a moving story. Jodie is also working to build a global audience through her telling soundscapes and effective lyrics. I’m excited to see what Jodie does next. For more information, visit her socials linked below! - EP Review: "Bloom" - Raynes
British-American trio, Raynes, has released their fourth studio EP, "Bloom", which not only has themes of growth, but sonically and dynamically blossoms from start to finish. TRACKLIST Pulling Teeth (I Feel Like She Knows) Turn It and Twist Your Mouth Is a Garden Goldfish Rainbow Baby It's So Quiet Without You Say That You Want It Raynes consists of North Dakota natives and college buddies Mat Charley and Joe Berger, plus UK born vocalist Mark Race, who moved to the U.S. for the sole purpose of forming a band with Mat and Joe after they found a video of him singing on Instagram. Now based in Los Angeles, they signed with Sony Music Publishing in 2018, leading them to release their first official single in 2019 titled "Lemon Drop", which is pushing 18 million streams on Spotify alone today. Since then, they've taken the world by storm with hit singles, 3 EP releases, gaining attention from Billboard and People , and earning hundreds of thousands of monthly listeners. With a diverse range of musical backgrounds, the band mixes their knowledge to create a beautiful unique blend of folk, rock, and chamber pop with celtic influences. If there had to be comparisons, they're said to have some similarities to Mumford & Sons , Coldplay and Arcade Fire . Now, they're making waves with their brand new fourth EP, "Bloom", (produced by GRAMMY award-winning engineer Chris Sclafani ). Let's dive into these tracks. Pulling Teeth (I Feel Like She Knows) We open up the EP with the beautifully tragic track, "Pulling Teeth (I Feel Like She Knows)". Although super upbeat with a melody so cathartic you could melt, this song has a very detailed and heartbreaking story. Throughout the lyrics you'll find two characters that seem to be a married couple with a baby; though, they're both now very unhappy and just can't shake it, even though they want to. You're never told when you're young just how hard relationships really are. They take a lot of work, effort, patience and forgiveness. There are times that you will lose your mind, but when you truly love someone, you can't give up. "Pulling Teeth (I Feel Like She Knows)" is in the midst of those worst moments, when you're scared you can't make it. The soundscape of this song is a juxtaposition with it's energetic drum and bass playing a catchy rhythm, mixed with acoustic guitar and a bright fiddle and to really capture your attention. Turn It and Twist The second track is "Turn It and Twist", a deeply poetic but yet fun in it's tune track about that kind of person who is ironically nice to you only to make you feel bad about yourself. I feel like we've all experienced this type of relationship, whether it be romantic, with a friend or a with a family member, where they'd always have a condescending attitude after having done something nice for you. Afterwards you just find yourself thinking, "why do anything nice for me at all then if you're going to treat me like that?". There's nothing worse than having someone hold something over your head, especially when you didn't even ask for it in the first place. "Turn It and Twist" has a theatrical sass to it's tone, with a waltzing rhythm and beat. There's bar chanting vocals in the background with plenty of repeating choruses to get you singing along. Your Mouth Is a Garden Next, we have "Your Mouth Is a Garden". This song is full of hope and optimism, with promises to be better after having an argument with a loved one and willing to let it all go. The soundscape of this song is shimmering and sparkling with nostalgia. The energetic, upbeat pop/rock nature will have you wanting to move, but that's not all. The layers of vocals, stomping and crashing drums, bass, vibrant keys and more paired with the dynamic production work creates this incredible cinematic atmosphere that keeps you on your toes for the entire song. It's truly a beautiful experience that you'd almost kill for to hear and see happen live in concert. Goldfish "Goldfish" is about the realization that your partner isn't only just spending time with you. You can feel the jealousy and madness creeping inside of you, and you want to confront them about it - however, another part of you wants to just stay in denial, and pretend it's not happening. Maybe all the little things you're noticing really are just in your head, and there's nothing to worry about? Or maybe there is something going on, but you're just too scared to lose them. "Goldfish" is loud and bold in it's soundscape. You can hear the anger and hurt bursting through the instrumentation and vocals. What's special about this song is the string quartet which features a mandolin, bouzouki, and bodhran, giving the song a Celtic tone and groove. I also love the background vocals and harmonic arrangement on this one. It definitely pulls on your heartstrings, especially if you're able to relate to the song. Rainbow Baby "Rainbow Baby" is a beautiful song of hope to anyone who has gone through the loss of a child. With plays on words between nature and being a mother, this song sings softly like a lullaby. It starts with a duelling banjo and guitar, gradually growing into a symphony of strings, piano, a xylophone and a gentle, cinematic bass drum to really emphasis the emotional impact of this song. The dynamic shifts and gliding atmosphere create a welcoming, heavenly experience for parents out there who not only need a shoulder to cry on, but a boost of confidence and optimism. It's So Quiet Without You Next is "It's So Quiet Without You", a song with a special story. Written several years ago by Raynes, it was a song that stayed a demo but kept being revisited. Without even changing a lyric, just a couple instruments, Raynes decided it was time for this song to be shared with the world. "It's So Quiet Without You" is the song of longing and yearning, wishing the one you love was still by your side after too much time alone; whether it's because you broke up, or because you're long distance, anyone in a situation where they miss somebody can relate to this song. This song is so unique with it's falsetto vocals and dissonant layers of harmonies. The soundscape feels like nighttime in the summer, with crickets chirping in the background and the romantic orchestral instrumentation building so heavily with emotion as the song goes on. Say That You Want It Last but not least, we have the super atmospheric and cinematic closer, "Say That You Want It". This song is about a relationship with someone who is giving you mixed signals. You can't tell if they want to leave or stay, and you want them to just be open about what they want from you because you feel like you're losing your mind. This final song, which stands as the longest song on the EP at five minutes long, sonically defines what the EP "Bloom" is all about as it grows and flourishes with stunning instrumental moments and repeating choruses to emphasis the emotional impact. It's almost hard to put into words how beautifully done this EP is. The creative chemistry between these three is so undeniable, you can feel it in your heart when you're listening to their music. Every detail in every song is so intentional, from the thoughtful storytelling from start to finish, to the instrumental choices, to the vocal arrangements and harmonies... you start to get lost in just how stunning everything sounds. I truly believe Raynes coming together was fate, and the music they put out into the world is meant to be heard. It's not only relatable, but cathartic and healing. If you enjoyed the "Bloom" EP, I highly suggest diving into the rest of their discography. They've also got some shows coming up, so check and see if they're coming to a venue near you! - Review: "Mr. Incognito" - Naomi Jane
Photography: Matthew Patrick Donner Naomi Jane 's newest addition to her discography is "Mr. Incognito", a song that details mistreatment she suffered from someone else. She describes this person with virulent characteristics, as they created a life-changing moment for Jane that caused her great distress and pain, and this person doesn't seem to care about this, trying to convince her into thinking it never happened, and that they aren't a bad person. While the opposite is true, this person, who she calls "Mr. Incognito", continues to have devoid emotions, and a mindset that makes them think they're better than everyone else and can do no wrong. Listening to the song, a strong sense of power and musical intensity completely exudes from it during each second of "Mr. Incognito". From the production to Jane's incredible and distinct vocals, it is without a doubt that extraordinary amounts of creativity and musical and technological expertise when into all the elements of this single. The synths are dynamic and contribute to the compelling soundscape, as well as Jane's large vocal range and singing talents. This song feels as though you're trekking up a massive mountain, completely motivated as you reach the summit. Naomi Jane is a music artist that grew up in both California and New York. Since she was young, she has been known for her virtuosity, being able to sing and play several different instruments, as well as acting in musicals. Knowing who you are and your self-worth when it comes to a relationship is quite possibly the biggest power move ever. When you know yourself to the extent of not letting an immature person come into your life and play with your feelings and emotions you have this glow to you. It’s almost impossible for people to not be caught in the amazement that you give off. They are drawn to you because you have so much confidence and independence. You are simply an angel to hundreds, and they have to get to know you whether you want them to or not. Abi Muir released her latest single titled “On One Knee” on June 20, 2025. A song that brings us so much courage and trust to be ourselves and eventually time will play out as it should. “On One Knee” begins with a sound that is so ear catching and retro at the same time. The opening beat is so catchy and fun as well as the melody. Not to mention how euphoric her vocals were with such relatable lyrics. Especially with lines like “you can run away but / you won’t forget me” and “no such thing as you getting bored / i’m all of this plus more.” Every aspect of this track was so powerful and honest I loved every second of it. There wasn’t a moment where I didn’t feel empowered and strong. I immediately added this song to my everyday listening playlist. Abi Muir is a singer/songwriter hailing from Cairns, Queensland, Australia.
