To warmly welcome the summer season, Swedish singer-songwriter Alvin Weise has released the dreamy pop song titled ‘Feel the Same’. This track starts off calmly, with catchy guitar strumming to back Weise’s vocals and lyrics detailing that there is more than meets the ear. The lyrics begin to explain that there is a deep love present – but something is wrong. Although these are widely relatable feelings and the track could easily transition into a more melancholic sound, Weise surprises listeners by bringing in 80’s-like drums alongside his smooth and bright voice. The instrumental pieces of the song blend wonderfully with Weise’s voice and become more beautifully complex as it continues on. Electronic, retro-like piano and sound-magnifying layers to Wiese’s voice are added to the second half of the song, along with lyrics that feel like a happily familiar game of cat and mouse. This song reminds listeners that love may be messy, but it is also stunning. This message is what seals the deal on ‘Feel the Same’ being deemed a fully-fledged summer, coming-of-age, and celebratory of young love type of song. Weise’s track begins with a dedication to falling in love, detailing how he is “drunk” on his feelings and wishing that the other person feels the same way. Although his feelings are deep and strong for this person, the song begins to explode when Weise croons that there is “something missing”. He is indeed in love, but at the same time he experiences pain and is left wondering about the state of this relationship. This state of confusion and mix of emotions is shown cleverly through Weise’s blend of an upbeat tone set alongside lyrics that make listeners think more about what Weise is really experiencing in the song. You can feel the raw emotion throughout the song - especially during times when the phrase “even when I win, I lose” is included. Weise may be stuck between a win and a loss with this relationship, but I assure you -you will secure a win if you give this track a listen. Alvin Weise is a 25-year-old Swedish singer-songwriter and studies at Musikmakarna (The Songwriting Academy) in Stockholm, Sweden. Alvin began playing music at the age of ten in a music-loving home and has since then continued to expand his musical education and experience. Caleb Hearn’s songs have always let us in on his personal experiences by narrating stories of joy, heartbreak and everything in between. His latest track, “ Klonopin ,” is another, but it is his most personal song yet. Klonopin is the name of a medication used to treat anxiety and panic disorders. This song dives deep into him using this medicine in order to ease his mental health struggles, but also finding himself becoming reliant on it. He’s aware of how unhealthy his relationship with Klonopin has become, with lyrics comparing the need for it to a child’s need for a present father. Writing this single has become a therapeutic outlet for Caleb because it's allowing him to express and release all of his feelings, and recognize the importance of him overcoming his dependency on a temporary fix for his anxiety. The slow tempo, strong vocals, use of the guitar and how heartfelt this song sounds coming from Caleb, makes it sound incredibly emotional. It’s one of the most personal songs I’ve ever come across. It’s straight from the heart, as he’s being honest and detailed about his mental health struggle and the symptoms. It feels very intimate. He begins by describing how the anxiety comes about so unexpectedly while driving and the confusion affecting him so much that he’s unable to tell if this is what death feels like: “ I pull to the side of the highway. I can’t feel my hands on the wheel. I don’t know if I'm dying, but I think that this must be how it feels .” He continues, singing directly to the Klonopin that controls the anxiety, and compares his need to it to other important needs: “ And you numb the pain. Cause I just wanna feel okay. I need you like, I need you like water. A man in the desert. I need you like a child needs a father. You hold me together like a sitch in my skin .” His dependency on the medication is displayed here, but being able to admit that is hard. However, recognizing this, and how unhealthy it is, is one step closer to overcoming the reliance, and working on becoming triumphant over this struggle: “ It’s almost a fix ‘til I bleed again .” The lyrics are very heartbreaking, but powerful because of how honest he’s being, with lyrics pleading how he wants to feel normal again, and for it to all stop: “ God I miss feeling more than a heartbeat ," and “When will it end? [...] Make it end.” Fortunately, after the song was released, Caleb shared a statement that told how he was aware of the dependency because Klonopin can be addictive, and acknowledged that it really was just a temporary fix. However, he also shared a positive update on his journey and a message for those that may be experiencing the same thing:   “ I’m doing much better with it but writing a song like this was extremely therapeutic and difficult at the same time. The unmistakable sentiment of loneliness is entirely overwhelming. The feeling of loneliness can capture us when we least expect it. When we are surrounded by a cornucopia of people, when the noise of conversations drowns our senses– we somehow become tethered up in the paralyzing feelings of loneliness. To feel as though we are losing ourselves in an interminable battle between loneliness and freedom. Freedom– because we are liberated, and have the ability to drown out our burdens, and loneliness– because although we may try to mollify ourselves, we somehow always end up enmeshed in the crowded, and intricate emotions of feeling utterly alone. The song “Berlin Is a Liar” by BOVIY, her latest single, depicts a similar situation. In her song, she speaks about the topic of feeling desolate and lonely even in a city as teeming and ostentatious as Berlin. Although the city offers freedom and undying inspiration for its community, we still somehow fall into heavy and forlorn sentiments. The music video shows a montage of clips, many of which depict the city behind her, and I think these particular parts of the music video tell us about the freedom and beauty that the city offers. We watch as our singer, BOVIY, walks through the city, marveling at the scenery, yet, despite the innate magnificence, the loneliness still settles in. Although the lyrics tell a rather melancholy story, the sound is the complete opposite– settling for a more upbeat and light tune. This song has the kind of charm that allows listeners to nod their heads along to the captivating sound, befalling to BOVIY’s alluring voice, but when the lyrics finally register, listeners recognize how vehemently emotional this song is, and how many shaking souls it may touch with it’s resonating sound and lyrics. That’s what this song has done for me. I was slightly caught off-guard by the almost cavalier sound, compared to the importance of the lyrics. I did not anticipate such an insouciant melody to have such harrowing lyrics that touch my heart. Lyrics that are able to define my very confused feelings, that although I may have the world around me, with a plethora of people in my life, I still plunge into loneliness. “Superglue” by Holden McRae is the third installment to a three-song debut EP set to release this summer. It details the beginning of a new relationship after a difficult breakup in a delicate manner. McRae sings “I never thought that we would be here given where we started, you were my superglue when I was broken-hearted,” depicting the act of falling in love again. It has an air of the spring and summer seasons when new life blossoms from the cold, bleak, winter. There is a subtle caution in the lyrics “I’m a fool, I could speak too soon if you want,” showing that relatable feeling of being wary of vulnerability due to old wounds but still eagerly wanting to try with the person you are falling for. There is that universal feeling of remembering the pain you were put through but still finding hope through this new relationship forming before your eyes.     McRae straddles the realms of indie pop in a delicate and simplistic manner. His vocals are a soft accompaniment to the gentle guitar, drums, and piano. The song’s melody is delicate and sweet like honey it conveys the message of the lyrics perfectly. It truly feels like the moment you realize you’re falling in love with someone. “Elephant” described the resilient nature that derives from years of being tired of being the odd-one-out in every room. Wherever you go, you sense an overwhelming amount of eyes latching onto you. Years of tolerating their judgment have beat you down but you can’t bring yourself to accept the intolerance of others. It seems as though your life has been filled with painstaking instances of your own loved ones turning against you the second you show your true self. With those burning eyes locked onto you, you remember the sacrifices you made to finally be comfortable in your own body. After those long, long years of constant fighting, why hasn’t everyone learned to keep their seething opinions to themselves? The mountains you’ve climbed and the battles you fought are evidence enough of the respect you deserve. You finally realize that you shouldn’t have to hide your body, which unashamedly displays the years you spent fighting to be comfortable in your own skin. “Elephant” is an alt-pop dream-pop anthem that utilizes a low tone and register to effectively display the confidence gained over time by the narrator. Throughout this single, Miki Ratsula sings each line with a whisper-like quality. Even as the song picks up with its differing instrumentation, this whisper-register remains consistent. It reflects the self-assured confidence and comfortability explained in the lyricism. The narrator knows who they are and a consistent vocal quality displays this. The instrumentation is a fascinating aspect to this single, as it gradually builds from what it was in the beginning. We begin with simple guitar chords against the vocals. More instruments accompany the guitar and build a dreamy tone throughout. During the second chorus, a unique percussion is incorporated. This percussion is break–core inspired and, while seemingly sudden in the sweetly soft song quality, its slow buildup makes it feel completely natural.
