The threeway collaboration that is “Good Vibes Only” can only be described as the song of the summer. Hot Chelle Rae, Mitchy & André, and NASHUP have joined forces on the song released mid-March, and their fans are certainly ready for a fun summer with this track. It gives the vibe of a pool party, as the artists sing about taking shots by the water, surfing, and popping champagne. The track is upbeat and fun, and is impossible to sit still to. It feels similar to other EDM and dance music, and has synths, trumpets, and a catchy rhythm. A feel good song, the trio has certainly created a hit. The chorus is simplistic, driving home their point with absolutely no complications. They sing “Got those G-O-O-D-V-I-B-E-S / Got no stress / Got that sunshine flowing straight into my chest” on repeat. Spelling out the title makes the song fun and easy to pick up, and emphasizes their goals for their summer. Similarly, the outro simply repeated “it's good vibes only (good vibes only, yeah)” over and over, as the song slowly fades away. There is no doubt that their vibes are immaculate, and this is clearly mirrored in their words. This trio of artists is unmatched in vibes and skillset, and their styles perfectly blended together in this track. “Friends” is a self aware piece on the futility of trying to hold onto relationships that have had their time.  The song focuses on why it's over, why there cannot be a further relationship- and yet the title and the chorus beg the opposite.  Tales of the intimacy and connection once felt make even conceptualizing the relationship as being worth something less seem ridiculous.  The ironic structure of the song allows for the listener to gain better insight into the back and forth thought process of the narrator and therefore, make it that much more realistic.  In the rare case that this situation may not be relatable in itself, the way John Hugo approaches it certainly is.   Hugo immediately jumps into storytelling, offering maybe two chords of instrumentals before he starts singing, catching the listener by surprise and allowing space for his lyricism to be heard by avoiding the usualing dwelling on the structure of introduction.  Despite this upbeat start, the song doesn’t necessarily follow a quickened pace.  Its tone is conversational and in depth, prioritizing expression over sound.  Every line he sings brings back the theme of irony and cognitive dissonance, with either a real or metaphorical echo denying what he just stated.  At one point he even sings “that’s a lie” directly after what seemed to be a personal confession.  The writing and creative structure of “Friends” somehow takes its impact even further than its already striking subject matter. Leaving You Tonight is the latest single by the new pop princess from Los Angeles, Marissa McRoberts. This track is an independence anthem about breaking the constraints of a toxic lover and "leaving [them] tonight." The first verse sees McRoberts questioning her former partner on their gaslighting, manipulation, and infidelity in the lyrics, "All the things you keep denying/When I literally have it in writing/Tell me that you're not with her/Do you feel it in the way I hurt?" The chorus shows the singer's capability to take her life back when she snaps back with "You know you really let me down/I'm always coming back somehow/But not this time/I'm leaving you tonight." The second verse shows her shifting the narrative to be more in her favor when she sings, "I wonder how you did all this scheming/You really got me to believe that/You were never the reason/I always have the thought of leaving." McRoberts' lyricism on this song could make anyone feel like the most free-spirited baddie in the room. Marissa McRoberts starts the song off eerily with the first verse given on a dark instrumental complete with distorted voices in the background. McRoberts' defined alto voice is showcased very well here not only because of how beautiful her vocals are, but how well she shows emotion while singing. The song picks up with a dance-pop chorus with an uptempo drum beat and an unforgettable melody. I even got some vibes of R&B and Latin music. Though the chorus may have stayed mostly the same throughout the entirety of the song, it evolved as the song progressed. The second time around, an additional beat drop followed featuring down-pitched vocals reminiscent of Cry Baby era Melanie Martinez. The song's final chorus switches things up even further when she sings it on top of an acoustic guitar riff. You could've told me that this song was an unreleased track from Dua Lipa, Sabrina Carpenter, or Tate McRae and I would've believed you. McRoberts clearly pays attention to what works in modern pop and has put her fresh spin on it. Though she may currently be a college student, Marissa McRoberts is showing that she's already gotten her master's degree in making pop bangers. After dropping a series of covers on Soundcloud over the last decade, the singer released her official debut single, On My Way Back , last summer. After listening to both songs, it's clear that including themes of self-love and mental health in her music is very important to McRoberts. When talking about Leaving You Tonight , McRoberts said, "I hope that the song makes people want to dance with their friends, reclaim their power, and realize that they deserve better." I definitely felt empowered after listening to this bop. If you want to feel this empowered too, you should stream this song now and if you're in the LA area, catch one of her local shows. It may not be hard to get front row for her now, but I have a feeling that someday soon, you'll be paying Taylor Swift-level prices for her nosebleeds. The lingering pain that follows heartbreak is indescribable. It’s hard to put your pain into words, but Nina did it so effortlessly. This song is such a powerful anthem to all the people out there who have struggled to recover from a failed love. Nina’s lyrics express a sense of heartbreak and betrayal from a past relationship. In the pre-chorus she says, “You said you needed space and time, I gave it to you gladly, you’re falling for another, fell for them badly.” You can feel the lack of closure she got from this person and understand why it’s so hard for her to accept the relationship is over. Her mention of trying to move on with someone else shows how the attempt to heal, but this person still evades her thoughts making it hard to let go. Nina express feelings of hurt and confusion towards her past partner, questioning their intentions. She acknowledges her own struggle to move on and the emotional baggage carried from the relationship. There is a sense of empowerment towards the end as Nina declares her happiness and independence. She takes us on a journey of healing and self-discovery, letting the listeners know that it’s going to be hard, but it will be okay. Nina Brand is a singer songwriter in the indie-pop genre. “Blueprint” delves into the confusing aftermath that comes from realizing nobody can compare to the last person you gave your heart to. After your last breakup, you find yourself unable to move on in any significant way. Guys introduce themselves and your friends set you up on dates, but nothing seems to stick. The existence of other men reminds you that they simply are not him. They parade themselves as stand up guys who are worth your time, but are they really? Maybe the only way for them to compare is to behave exactly like he did. That intoxicating look about him always remains in your memories. However, they can’t just be somewhat similar to him. They need to be carbon copies of your past love, and maybe then you could entertain them. But you will always latch onto him and know deep down that other people can’t fit the blueprint he left. While first listening to this single, it is clear that the narrator is in a stump, unable to look at her other guy options. While it is difficult for her to find a new partner, she remembers her ex so fondly that he is now a permanent blueprint in her life. "You always laughed at all of my jokes," singer-songwriter Landan Ash sings on the chorus of his latest single, "Anyway." In the wake of a breakup, these moments render as stinging reminders. "You sure knew how to put on a show," he winces. Gentle, whirring synths, muted guitar, and layers of Ash's vocals all blend into a fountain of midnight blues. The LA-based artist writes with stunning intimacy, as though listeners are eavesdropping on a private conversation. With a marvelous, reverb-soaked guitar solo in place of a bridge, "Anyway" expresses the pain of memory like watching a fuzzy home video. The impression is still vivid and palpable, but nonetheless unreachable. It's fascinating to dissect the hints and details Ash decorates his lyricism with. What we learn about the ex-boyfriend he addresses in "Anyway" are the false perceptions the singer-songwriter held of him. "I thought you were a gentleman, but gentle men don't make me feel torn," reads the song's more scathing takedowns (and clever wordplay). Blanketed in background layers of his gentle falsetto, Ash's vocals sounds almost ethereal — illuminating the darkness of the moody instrumentation. "Like we never happened anyway," he repeats on the second chorus. EVALINA’s latest single is a multidimensional track containing several layers that flawlessly exemplify the complexity of human emotions. On the surface, "Happy You're Happy" is a nonchalant, carefree track about moving on and hoping your ex-partner finds happiness. However, when delving deeper, the infectious song contains passive-aggressive lyrics that contradict the positive title and bubbly soundscape. EVALINA describes how she wants to feel about seeing her former partner doing well and finding someone else. However, subliminal messages are sprinkled throughout the song that show that she could not be further from happiness-- but this is the last thing she wants the subject to know. So instead, she lies through the skin of her teeth, pretending that she is empty of envy and bitterness. In the first verse, her passive-aggressiveness is revealed immediately with the lyrics: "Heartache, thought you gave me heartache// Felt more like a headache// Used to be bitter but I’m so much better now.
" These lines may appear lighthearted, but in reality, they showcase the denial she is facing and the resentment she is feeling. As GUTS World Tour began, Olivia Rodrigo appeared on the main stage in a silver two piece set, opening up with her track, "Bad Idea, Right?" and then transitioning into the rock anthem "Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl." In the exciting first act of the tour, she runs across the stage, dances around, and welcomes everyone to their night of the fucking Guts World Tour. I managed to secure a VIP pit ticket for the show, and it was incredible to be right at the barricade, where it was clear that she wanted to take every chance to be interactive and share moments with her audience. After performing the emotional anthems "Vampire" and "Traitor," Olivia went backstage to change into a new outfit and set her piano up on the main stage for the next couple songs. The transition from "Driver's License" to "Teenage Dream" was complete with old videos of a young Olivia and felt so touching when looking at the successful artist that she is today. She delved into a speech about how she felt less scared of growing up, mentioning how she just had her 21st birthday the month before. The audience sang along to these tracks and held up flashlights on their phone, uniting us all together as we joined Olivia in performing the single that made her a star and the closing track to her sophomore album. For "Pretty Isn't Pretty" and "Love Is Embarrassing," Olivia and her dancers went into a choreography that was fitting with each song's lyrics and moved down the right and left catwalks. I was fortunate enough to be at the end of the right catwalk for "Pretty Isn't Pretty," and it was amazing to be up close as she sang a song so relatable right now. For "Logical" and "Enough For You," she transitioned from her butterfly-shaped stage to the moon, where she floated on a track across the arena. She stopped between songs to have different sections to scream, ask if anyone had attended her Sour Tour in Milwaukee, and even sang "Happy Birthday" to everyone in the audience celebrating. Coming back to the stage, she went into "Jealousy, Jealousy" and walked down the barricade to hold fans' hands and sing the track with them. For "Happier" and "Favorite Crime," she sat down right in front of me, and the audience once again held up their flashlights as she went into (in my opinion) two of the best songs off her Sour album. The next song was "Deja Vu," which she ran all across the stage to sing and had the audience screaming along with her, particularly shouting "I love you!" in between the chorus and the verse. Next, she stood at the main stage and went into two of my personal favorites, "The Grudge" and "Can't Catch Me Now." To close the concert, Olivia changed into a sequin red romper, ripped star tights, and went into her more rock-inspired tracks. For "Brutal," she jumped around and screamed, with a stage presence that had the audience moving along with her. She continued to rock out with next song, "Obsessed," ending the performance strumming power chords on an electric guitar. For "All-American Bitch," she danced around the stage and turned the lights off for a moment so that everyone could think of things that made them upset and scream. It. was loud. And a fitting way to end the concert, before she came back out for the encore. In a shift from Sour Tour, Olivia got a little raunchier -- switching to the original "perfect all-American tits" line in "All-American Bitch" and humping the air at the end of the stage for "Obsessed." For the encore, she sang "Good 4 U," same as she did for Sour Tour. Then, she ended with "Get Him Back!," starting off holding a megaphone and asking Milwaukee, "Are you still with me?" Olivia ended the encore by coming down and walking through the barricade, where she held hands, took gifts, and chatted with as many fans as she could. It was a sweet moment to end such an incredible show. As someone who attend Sour Tour, it was amazing to see the growth in Olivia's stage presence, vocal ability, and stage production since her first tour two years ago. Not only an incredible singer and song writer, Olivia is a performer and one that you cannot miss. If you have any way of still attending the Guts World Tour on this leg or the next, definitely check for tickets. As she sings about heartbreak, angst, and envy, it is easy to relate to her music and therapeutically get to scream the lyrics in an arena full of so many other people that get it too. It's a bright, poppy tune about how we all need self-care, especially after a hard day. It's sassy and upbeat, with just the right level of promiscuity. When you look at the lyrics, it's clear that Modal Split has a sense of humor. Some lines are certainly provocative, but subtle.
