With a shocking switch up from swing jazz to modern pop, Candace describes this duality as “essentially being aware of how messed up the world is and also wanting to just escape into some sort of cartoon land, where injuries don’t seem to have a lasting impact. It’s a very silly approach to writing about very real issues.” With ethereal and dazzling dreamy pop sequences, Candace emphasizes the desire to escape and look away from modern society’s figurative train crashes. Roses are beautiful. The flower comes in rich colors and smells good. When you look closer though, you’ll see the thorns. In her new single, “Dancing on Roses,” Linn Willner uses this metaphor to examine the human connection. It feels great to be loved, cared for, and wanted. Even so, all relationships have their imperfections, or thorns. They are inevitable and how we handle them can make or break the connection altogether. Willner wrote multiple versions of this track, each of them examining a different phase of a relationship. I really liked the instrumentation of this song because it is simple. It consists of a piano that is later layered with drums. This is a good stylistic choice because it really lets the emotion in the lyrics and Willner’s voice take center stage. There is raw emotion all throughout the track, but it is really prominent in the chorus. Willner sings, “the truth and the lies that you always told me, I dance on roses until I will bleed.” To me, this line is saying that we try to ignore the imperfections for as long as we can. Blood is also a common indicator of life, so it is like being snapped back to reality. With that being said, we shouldn’t ignore these imperfections. Rather, we should work through them to strengthen the connection in a relationship. Linn Willner is a singer/songwriter from Sweden. When she was just four years old, Willner wrote her first song and discovered her passion for music. Friendships are some of the strongest bonds a person can form in their life. And when it comes to best friends, sometimes there isn't anyone closer. It has a very upbeat vibe to it, and it made me want to get up and dance more than once. Though, as catchy as these lyrics are, I feel that Shockey’s voice is the true star of the show. Shockey has such intense clarity in her voice. Pair that with her use of her chest voice, and it’s hard to not fall in love with her tone. Despite only having started out in 2019, you would think Shockey has been singing professionally her whole life. Maria Shockey is a powerhouse of talent. As a completely independent artist with over 1.5 million streams and 25,000 followers under her belt, Shockey has proven herself to be both extremely talented and inspiring to other new and young artists. Following the release of her debut single, “You Don’t Get to Know,” Shockey has gone on to release numerous other singles, and even a full album titled “Composure.” Shockey gets around 5,000 listeners every month, but I can imagine that number will go up fairly soon. After listening to Rosie Meyer’s new single, “Deep Down,” I feel that she would relate to the latter. The lyrics tell the story of how she kept coming back only for them to turn around and hurt her. Fortunately, the song also has a second and more prominent layer. It is a “heartbreak anthem.” Meyer takes heartbreak like a champ, as I think it has made her stronger. Despite being about a breakup, this song is really upbeat. It consists of a well crafted dance sound that is created by the combination of a bass and drums. In the first verse, she starts by talking about her memories. Meyer was under the impression that the timing for a relationship wasn’t right. Toxic relationships can be summed up perfectly with Ben Ellis’ newest single, “Half the Time.” It’s a struggle when a partner, a friend, even a thing is only in your heart for half the time– there’s always a part of you that doesn’t trust them, but, like a bad habit, you end up back with them in the end. There’s jealousy, paranoia, and that constant need to chase down that old high you had when you first met– that first spark between you. You seem to always be crawling back either way. “Half the Time” is a dedication to that feeling, all-encompassing and entirely wrong but feeling so good. The instrumentals in “Half the Time” are phenomenally dynamic; while the song may begin tentatively, with quiet strings strumming in the background, the chorus will sneak up on you suddenly, like a tidal wave. It’s big, huge, and sounds amazing with a pair of good headphones; Ellis’ voice hums loudly, and it hits you like a truck when you first listen to it. The song just keeps ramping up in passion and energy as the track continues, eventually culminating in a beautifully poetic ending where Ellis’ voice fades out along with the strings you hear from the beginning of the song. The songwriting from “Half the Time” is equally poetic, elegantly illustrating the constant, toxic need to impress whatever or whoever you’re trying to get back with; Ellis sings, in the chorus, “I wanna have it, wanna have it but it isn’t right.” That desire, mixed with self-awareness, is exactly what “Half the Time” nails in its lyrics– contradictory feelings coupled with an extremely amazing soundscape. Hailing from Cardiff, Wales, Ben Ellis is a singer-songwriter who can't remember the last time he wasn't singing. In his childhood, Ellis wrote songs and began guitar lessons at age 14. One of art's most remarkable aspects is depicting diverse experiences. Singer-songwriter ARO aims to create music that authentically illustrates her experience with ADHD and mental health. Their willingness to be forthcoming and depict the challenges of mental health that many shy away from is commendable. Details like "half-finished projects" and "I fall in love too many times with versions of myself redefined / By all the things I could pour myself into" are illustrative and open. The cycle of becoming obsessed with something and making it part of a version of oneself only to forget or quit it is ubiquitous yet often disregarded. This genuineness makes the song significant. "I Fall In Love Too Many Times" is an important track, bringing awareness to shared experiences in a way that makes people feel less alone. Even those who may not specifically connect with the lyrics about hyper-fixations can click with lines like "A world too small / trying to have it all without a single sense." Closure is an essential element in all relationships because it provides a clear understanding of what went wrong, as well as ensuring that there aren’t any lingering feelings or unanswered questions. It signifies the end of a relationship and paves the way for both individuals to move forward. However, in “ Heartbreak ,” Audriix shares her experience of being in a toxic and abusive relationship and in an attempt of moving on with different methods, such as therapy, meeting other people, and going no contact, she was still unable to let go. She was holding onto her lingering feelings for him and holding onto the hope that the relationship isn't over. This struggle is oddly common, as many people find it challenging to move on from relationships where they deserved better. Closure is an important step in fully letting go. Without it, emotions linger, your mind is occupied with thoughts about them, your healing process is put to a halt, and it prevents you from finding someone new. Audriix makes it known that this wasn’t a healthy, happy relationship. It was toxic, and even therapy couldn't fully help her in moving on from him: “ Years have passed since you were good to me. You owe me for all my therapy. Now I know that you will never change .” Although he had damaged her mentally and emotionally, she still finds herself having a little piece of hope that they could rekindle their relationship: “ In my head, won't let go. I’m so mad at myself for having hope .” She acknowledges that this is wrong and that it’s preventing her from living life, finding happiness again, and moving on: “ I want the heartbreak, so I can cry and just move on. Give me a clean break, I’m so tired trying to hold on. Cuz I know it's not right from the way that we fight. But the fear of what's next is messing with my head. Just give me a heartbreak, so I can be glad you’re gone and just move on .” Audriix, and everyone relating to her, definitely deserves a happy, healthy relationship. You should never tolerate partners who mistreat you, and it's important to have the strength to leave those that do, and seek the happiness that you deserve. Singer-songwriter Alyssa Reid has just released “Sleep Without You”, her highly anticipated follow-up to her hit, “Die For Love.” Alyssa talks about the difficult few months after a relationship ends, and how isolating it can feel. In the first verse, Alyssa said that’s doesn’t go out until the sun sets and doesn’t go out with friends “cause I’m not a good friend to be around.” Alyssa is left in silence, and the silence is deafening. She reminisces on a time when she used to stay up late with her boyfriend, but now she’s awake because she’s not with him. Alyssa says that she wishes her ex was here with her, but she’s trying to not feel this way. Then, in the chorus, she says that she’s trying to go out and be busy, but she says “I’m drowning in pity/cause I’m missing you.” Alyssa then throws questions at her ex, asking if his new girl loves him the way she does, and she reiterates that she can’t “sleep without [him].” After the chorus, Alyssa brings back a memory of when he played their song three times when he drove her home one night. She then says, “I know you’re gone/but I haven’t moved at all” because she feels so stuck in the past. Alyssa asks if he still has her number saved, just in case he wants to call. Alyssa feels so attached to the good memories and feelings of her past relationship, and she just can’t move on. Alyssa blends experimental elements and instrumentals with a true electronic pop song. The song starts off with falling synthesizer notes, which listeners hear throughout the song. The percussive instruments aren’t the classic drum kit, but rather a fusion of tried-and-true beats with a variety of non-traditional percussion instruments that add a unique flair to the song. As Alyssa's voice comes in for the first, her use of the vocoder captivates the listener. A vocoder is a speech-coding device that analyzes the human voice and synthesizes it for a variety of purposes. It first became popular in the late 1970s, but artists still use the vocoder today. Alyssa’s voice is amazing, and the reverb applied to her vocals really adds to the track. She also used synth strings in the track at the end of the pre-chorus, which perfectly drops the listener into the chorus. Alyssa Reid has a long history with the music industry, dating all the way back to 2008. Alyssa got her start on the show, The Next Star, a Canadian reality TV show. Reid was signed two years later to Wax Records after co-founder Jamie Appleby saw her viral YouTube parody of Justin Bieber’s “One Less Lonely Girl.” In late 2010, Alyssa released her single “Alone Again”, taking lyrics from Heart’s 1987 hit “Alone”. The song entered the Canadian Hot 100 charts and stayed there for 39 weeks. “Back To Her”, Alice Pisano’s latest release, tells the story of being second to your number one. It seems to be a love song, articulating often how she feels she is falling for this person, describing their relationship. But just as these things happen in life, it consistently leads back to “her”. The allusive other woman is always at the end of these seemingly happy, loving roads. So, as the title implies, she tells them to go back to her. Nearly begs them to. Despite the pain it may cause her, it seems it cannot compare to the pain of watching them want someone else. Her own want for this person seems to reflect their want for someone else, both being something “wrong”. She speaks on feeling as if she should distance herself, who is she to want and chase someone who doesn’t feel the same? And it is the same story for them. It cannot feel right to desire someone else while having such a loving person an arms reach away. “Back To Her” is a story of unrequited love on both ends, despite them being together. The song begins with a slow piano and Pisano’s echoing voice. She starts by explaining the basics of their interactions involving her , the argument’s layout, to explain her frustration. “You got one foot in the past. I should step back, move on.” her lyrics reflect the similarities between the two relationships with seamless symbolism. As she then goes onto describe her spiraling affection, the pace of the song follows it, her voice and tone sounding panicked. The chorus is a striking example of Alice Pisano’s talent as a singer, her soft but strong voice carries her words with a passionate pain that marks the song as a heart wrenching hit. She puts a particular emphasis on the “her” in this portion of the song that, in hearing that single word, anyone could understand the role “she” plays in Alice’s life. And yet, at the end of the song it is the very last word and it is almost silent, as if she is too tired to even utter her name again. J8KE is a 24 year old pop singer/songwriter from Toronto, Canada, who has been cultivating his love for music ever since he was a kid and he stumbled across learning chords with his aunt. He makes music both alone and with his former band, Cardinal Chase, and has toured worldwide, playing at countless colleges, house parties, conferences, festivals, and clubs. His unique mix of off-beat reggae, laid-back acoustic roots, and pop, along with his skill with guitar, drums, bass, and keys, has enthralled audiences and made him a sensation across all of North America. He’s currently working on his newest mixtape, recently returning from Los Angeles where he worked with members of the band Magic!, as well as the Grammy Award winning producer Brian West, who’s worked with artists such as Nelly Furtado and Maroon 5.
