  • Review: "Do Your Worst" - Andie Mackenzie

"Do Your Worst" by Andie Mackenzie is a dreamy, confessional song featuring her angelic vocals balanced over a piano-heavy production. The introduction started with a gentleness that almost felt like a lullaby, but the lyrics came across as vulnerable and poignant, as Mackenzie sings about getting attached too quickly and falling for a person that will never want her. The honesty in her lyrics, rawness of her vocals, and simplicity in her music made the song feel like Mackenzie was reading us a page from her diary. It is the kind of song that reminds me of "Driver's License" by Olivia Rodrigo or "Ceilings" by Lizzy McAlpine. I am certain that Mackenzie will become one of my new favorite artists. Mackenzie begins her track with singing about ignoring warning signs, tunnel vision, and thinking about what a relationship could have been. The deeply personal and heart-rending pre-chorus includes lyrics "Nights are hard because I think of how we could have spent them / You're vague with words so I never feel rejected / But I need to" in a chilling tone as she expresses the complexity of falling for the possibility of someone that would never return your sentiments, but wanting them to cut you off, so you can let them go. The chorus is powerful as she sings "I need you to do your worst to me / It's the only way I can be set free" in an emotional voice, letting us as listeners to see how quickly and strongly she has gotten attached to someone that will not reciprocate these feelings. "Do Your Worst," a self-depreciating songs about the hope and pain of wanting someone, comes as the second single from Andie Mackenzie. This track released as the lead for her upcoming EP "Afterthought" that I am certain will be full of songs similar in the power and sincerity of this song. Mackenzie hails from San Diego, but she ventured into NYC in 2022. She has been writing songs since she was eight years old, which explains the strength and honesty in her lyrics. If you're also a fan of artists like Lizzy McAlpine, Olivia Rodrigo, or Gracie Abrams, I highly recommend checking out Andie Mackenzie for your next favorite artist. Her career is certain to be going far places. Written By SYDNEY GRAY FOLLOW ANDIE MACKENZIE:

  • Review: "Love to Hate" - Sumner Stroh

Sumner Stroh releases her first single that is an undeniable hot girl summer anthem. “Love to Hate” is about taking the power back in your own life, and letting the naysayers and cynics drive you to be unapologetically yourself. People will frivolously drag you through the mud with sharp tongues and no pause for repercussions, and that negativity and attention can ultimately make you or break you. Rather than taking it on the chin and letting the world dictate your self-worth and character, get loud, stop apologizing for being who you are, stay true and authentic to the person in the mirror, and pity the folks who spend their days with the permanent stain of your name on their lips. Sumner is in her “baddie era,” and wants her followers to emulate this care-free feeling of living unashamed and letting the haters be her greatest motivators. You may not agree with everything she does, but the opposite of love is not hate, it’s indifference, so if you’re hating, you’re actually one of her biggest fans. “Love to Hate” contains everything Sumner has been dying to say, and it’s finally all out there on her terms. Sumner Stroh took the world by storm in 2022 by going viral on TikTok with some controversy. She was ruthlessly shamed on a global scale, and now she’s using that negativity to fuel her fire, and follow her dreams. Stroh took to TikTok to explain that she wanted to be in on the narrative rather than let the mob mentality make her one more causality of cancel culture. This catchy, defiant self-empowerment banger is for all the girls who have felt forced to apologize for just being human and living their lives. We are no longer saying sorry for speaking our truth. Blast this song through your speakers, pour a tall drink, and tune out the critics as you get the last laugh of being confident in who you are and comfortable in the choices that got you here. • Review: "don't call me pretty" - GAYLE

In the classic GAYLE style, she lets out all her angsty emotions through cheeky lyrics and a fiery production in her latest single. “don’t call me pretty” is fueled by the frustration and anger she has experienced during the moments she felt objectified in her relationships, friendships, and by the world. In the first verse, she exposes the unacceptable behavior of people in her past that haunts her in the present. She sings, “Don't fancy things you know you shouldn't// Just 'cause you saw a couple pictures that reminded you of// When I would let you do things now I wouldn't// Your thoughts are out of my control, but get me off your fuckin' camera roll.” These lyrics hold nothing back. GAYLE tells the audience that this person has kept pictures that she consented to them having when they were together. Now, she is no longer comfortable with them holding onto the photos and is rightfully outraged that they continue to look at them. These lyrics enrage the audience and fires them up for the remainder of the track, as they support GAYLE in reclaiming herself and her body. In the chorus, she reveals the hook: “So don’t call me pretty// I don’t wanna be pretty to you.” With these simple lines, she illustrates that she wants to take back the narrative and stop them from thinking of her in the way the used to. She would rather them think she is unattractive and insignificant, than know the perverted thoughts that run through their mind. She is livid and she is tired of keeping her mouth shut. Through her music, she is not only speaking up for herself, but also for her millions of listeners—the ones that have experienced the same situation with their former partners. She sings a truth that empowers those that relate to the song and gives them a voice they may not otherwise have. At only 18-years-old, GAYLE has written and released an outstanding number of tracks that convey brutal honesty that so many artists keep hidden. She is authentically herself and it reassures listeners that they too can fight back against those that have wronged them. Before officially releasing this song, GAYLE played it for each show as she opened for Taylor Swift on The Eras Tour. As a member of the audience on the second night in Glendale, I knew that “don’t call me pretty” would be an instant hit. The energy that the track emits is infectious and made everyone in the crowd want to dance along. I could not wait for the fiery track to be available on all platforms so I could relive the moment I heard it for the first time on repeat. Staying true to her pop-rock sound, GAYLE kicks off the song abruptly with strong guitar chords and powerful hits on the drums, with a subtle bass in the background. Quickly, the song mellows out to the primary bass and drum beat to focus on GAYLE’s compelling vocals. There is a slight pause in the production before the song continues into the second half of the verse, where the bass is a couple octaves higher, adding another layer to the track. The chorus briefly features only vocals, before the listener is struck by the strong guitar power chords with intense distortion. Paired with the cymbal-heavy drums and the moody bassline, the production is an authentic rock anthem that proves GAYLE is a rockstar in her own right. After the chorus, the song lightly softens to some airy piano chords and angelic vocal harmonies. Then, the bass-heavy production returns for the second verse, with the addition of staggered feedback sound effects that prepare for the explosion back into the chorus. In the outro, the production switches to a muted electric guitar that draws focus on GAYLE’s flawless falsettos. The guitar builds before it reaches the final energetic eruption. The production switches from being muted to exploding between every other word sung. This provides an emphasis on the anger-fueled lyrics, before the production comes to a halt. As GAYLE sings the last line, “Cause I’m only just pretty to you,” the vocal harmonies involve several layers creating a classic vibe that beautifully closes out the song. “don’t call me pretty” is an incredibly dynamic track with multiple layers to it that showcases GAYLE creative songwriting and her meticulous attention to detail. Taylor Gayle Rutherfurd, better known as GAYLE, is an 18-year-old pop-rock singer-songwriter. In 2021, she signed with Atlantic Records and released her 3x Platinum single, “abcdefu”. Quickly the song went viral on TikTok and Instagram, gaining her a significant following on social media. Her hit single peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States and earned the number one spot in multiple international countries, including the United Kingdom and Germany. The massive success resulted in her earning a Grammy Awards Song of the Year nomination, a Billboard Music Award nomination, and two MTV Video Music Award nominations. In March 2022, she released her debut EP, a study of the human experience volume one, which included “abcdefu”. In October 2022, she released her follow-up EP, a study of the human experience volume two. Then in December 2022, she released a special EP, a study of the human experience volume two and a half, which included unique remixes of songs from both EPs. Currently, GAYLE is experiencing her craziest adventure yet. On March 17th, 2023, she was the first supporting act on opening night in Glendale, AZ for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, alongside Paramore. She is scheduled to open for Swift on 15 dates throughout the tour, including closing night in Los Angeles. She is also scheduled to be a special guest on the European leg of P!NK’S Summer Carnival Tour, kicking off on June 7th, 2023. Written By Karlee Skipper FOLLOW GAYLE:

  • Review: "The Daughter That My Mother Wanted" - Jules Paymer x Miki Ratsula

Jules Paymer and Miki Ratsula have joined forces to create a gut-wrenching track that details their experience as young non-binary individuals. “The Daughter That My Mother Wanted” illustrates the dark shadows that haunt both artists. Through detailed lyrics, they paint this emotional scene of a girl that looks like them, dresses like them, and acts like them, but is not them. And this girl is hiding a secret. In the chorus, they sing, “She lives like a ghost// In my childhood home// She’s setting the table// While wearing my clothes// Yeah maybe I’ve lost it// She’s everywhere I go// I think I’m being haunted// By the daughter that my mother wanted.” They are looking back at their past and seeing a stranger. Someone they never felt connected to—someone that was never authentically them. Every lyric describes the ghost of their former self in tragic details that shatter the hearts of listeners. In the first verse, Paymer sings: “And it’s a pity// Cause I was 15// The last time that she felt like me// I bet her parents tell her they’re so proud// I don’t ever really hear that now.” With these lines, they reveal the heartbreaking reality of coming out to their family: that they have lost their natural support system. Their parents may not have explicitly disowned them, but sweet, loving words of affirmation and affection are no longer given. They know now that this familial love was merely conditional. Although it is beautiful that they live in a world where they can now be their true selves, they still mourn the loss of their past. They want to be the perfect daughter for their parents, but that is simply not who they are, nor who they have ever been. These honest lyrics are a comforting voice for every non-binary listener, reassuring them that they are not alone. “The Daughter That My Mother Wanted” is a melancholy ballad that consists of a somber production to emphasize the vulnerable lyrics. The song begins with a haunting piano riff that immediately introduces the grim atmosphere. As the first verse continues, Paymer’s soft vocals gracefully blend with the melody, further enhancing the despondent tone. Before the verse ends, light synth sound effects are added to the background, creating an ethereal element for the song. Then in the chorus, there is a different piano riff paired with the harmonizing vocals and a light bass that highlight the vulnerability and emotional heartache that Paymer is enduring. When the second verse hits, the production changes as Ratsula’s powerful vocals take the lead. The piano blends to the background, while the synth beat and notes are added to the forefront. The last two lines of this verse, Paymer joins in by providing haunting vocal harmonies. This production continues into the chorus, with the synth notes becoming higher. In the bridge, the bass notes take control before returning to the full production in the final chorus. The song closes with only the vocals and piano chords, before decreasing to simple piano keys as the track completely fades out. With “The Daughter That My Mother Wanted,” Paymer and Ratsula beautifully encapsulates the heartbreaking thoughts and feelings through a haunting melody that will forever remain within the hearts of listeners. Jules Paymer is a singer-songwriter from Los Angeles. From a young age, they have had a strong passion for music. At only seven-years-old, they played bass for a garage band in their hometown, and then learned to play guitar and piano. By the age of nine, they were already writing complete original songs. After finishing high school, Jules moved to Nashville to hone in on their sound and make music that is authentically them. In 2018, Jules came out as non-binary to their friends first, and then their family. Growing up, it was rare for them to find music that they related to. As a result, they aspire to create songs that they wish they had heard in their youth and make young LGBTQ+ members feel seen. With only 10 singles under their belt, they have already made a name for themselves within the music industry and as an important representative for the community. Miki Ratsula is a Finnish-American singer-songwriter, currently based in Southern California. Since they were young, they have been writing music and using it as a form of escapism. They kept their hidden talent a secret until freshman year of high school when they uploaded their first cover on YouTube. Their music is influenced by a diverse mix of genres, including acoustic singer-songwriter, electronica, and R&B. Their music grew significantly when they came out as gay and trans non-binary and began writing songs about their girlfriend. Similar to Paymer, they felt their experience was under represented while growing up and they strive to be a voice for the younger generation of the LGBTQ+ community. • Review: "Biblical" - Sadye

Judas kissing Jesus would end his life. Although ancient, this classic story of betrayal can parallel the love we fall for, trusting those who weaponize our weaknesses and misuse our hearts. Drawing upon religious themes, Sadye’s debut single “Biblical” shares how we can, just as easily, return to those who hurt us, despite knowing better. The song raises interesting questions about self-blame, accountability, and victimhood, cloaked inside an upbeat yet contemporary pop song. She says “I take the bad to get the good from you”, enduring a situation because there is some good, some light. Many circumstances in life can feel like this—purgatory—stuck between something that could be worse or could, potentially, be better. Oftentimes, we must take a scary leap to find out. Starting with heavy-hitting drums, cello-sounding synths, and speedy violin arpeggios, Sadye’s voice has a light, airy quality, resembling well-known artists like Astrid S. and Kim Petras. The subtle reverb and delay on her vocals further add to the song’s intended message, almost like she’s speaking to herself, some words being lost in space. The song introduces the lines “Don’t go easy on me”, in a breathy whisper, followed by pitched-down vocals that create a sense of conflict, like she’s fighting with herself over who's to blame. The bridge transforms into a religious chant, proclaiming “Blind faith, lonely, hurt me”, a haunting yet beautiful element of the song, speaking to how anyone can be magnetized by “love” at their lowest moment. Already being featured in Atwood Magazine, EarMilk, among other topical blogs, Sadye’s celestial sound and cohesive aesthetic has quickly garnered the up-and-coming artist 33K streams on Spotify. Inspired by her struggles with cancer, toxic relationships, and up-hill battles with self-worth, her sound strives to bring a light, dancey energy to our deepest thoughts and insecurities. Sadye’s instagram features snippets of heartfelt piano ballads and funny captions, like “Life can be traumatizing but you are pretty and eternal” and “I’m delusional but it got me here so it’s fine”, revealing a witty, humorous personality that molds darker moments into ones of light. Inspired by The Weekend and Charli XCX’s pivotal electronic sound, I’m convinced she’s Paris Hilton’s long lost sister, aptly standing in front of the Scientology building to promote her new single (genuinely made me laugh). Although she’s just beginning, I believe her refreshing dark-pop sound will captivate many, creating, as she calls it, a cult following. Written by: Conner Pettit FOLLOW SADYE:

  • Review: "Woah!" - Lev

The standout production makes a canny, modern pop sound with an arrangement of idiosyncrasies. Listen to the first verse and you'll be left wondering just how he produced such sounds. The way he modulates vocal loops to sound like synthetic instruments is enthralling, breathing fresh air into the pop formula. Lev cleverly threads the line between destabilizing and hypnotic. The sticky glue holding "Woah!" together is Lev's impressive vocals. Double-tracked for maximum texture and impact, the singer leaps from smooth croon to airy falsetto with ease. When the song cracks open into a symphony of strings, percussion, and vocal layering, it feels like an epiphany. Click here to listen to "Woah!" Diving into the lyrics, it becomes clear why Lev takes pride in writing and producing "Woah!" entirely on his own. "Been a long road, guess that's how it goes when nobody lights the way," he remarks in solitude. Rather than filling the noise with the typical music of isolation, Lev creates a room-filling sound of his own creation. The fear of facing this alone may have scared him before, but not now. He finds himself thinking "there's no one left to save me, but maybe that's exactly what I need." It's in the moments when he can not afford to doubt himself that he discovers all that he is capable of. "But now I know exactly what I," the dizzying sound completes the thought. What he "needs" is to trust in his own skills and talent: as a writer, as a producer, as an artist, and as a human. LA-based singer/songwriter and producer Lev is showing his multi-faceted talent with "Woah!": 100% written and produced by himself. The artist has collaborated with many pop peers in the past, lending production and songwriting to the likes of salem ilese, Aimee Vant, Sophia Gripari, etc. In 2021, Lev released the EP A Year Underwater, which has accumulated over 1.5 million streams on Spotify. Since his return to music in 2022, after a year's absence to develop and grow as an artist, Lev has released several, thrilling singles. "Woah!" presents the artist as a fully-realized producer and songwriter with a bold sound. Written By Andy Mockbee FOLLOW Lev:

  • Review: "let me tell you" - DESTÍNA

My father is a trophy parent. Trophy parents are parents that gloat about their children’s accomplishments – by extension, their children’s success reflects how “fantastic” their parenting was. But my father was also an absent parent. He left my family when I was seven and numerous events since then have ensured our distance from one another. He hasn’t been present for any of my successes or the struggles I’ve endured in the process, yet he brags about me to extended family and friends. For the longest time, this aggravated me beyond belief. But I’ve realized that being a trophy parent (in his case) is how he copes with the insecurities of being an absent parent. And I like to think that’s poetic justice for the insecurities his absence instilled in me. DESTÍNA's "let me tell you" expands on this idea of poetic justice for the children of absent parents. Listen to "let me tell you" by DESTÍNA here. The vulnerable “let me tell you” serves as an open letter to absent and estranged parents. Specifically, this is DESTÍNA’s lyrical letter to her father that walked away from her family. The single opens with audio from home videos before it begins to fade into a light piano melody with synths overlaying. The first verse describes how the absence of her father affected her. The opening lines: “Like a lock without a key / Like a heart that doesn’t bleed”, showcase the overall sentiment of incompleteness. In the pre-chorus, the synths rise in momentum as DESTÍNA decides to write a letter to her father with the intent of divulging her experiences with growing up without him while providing herself with closure. When the chorus drops, the piano melody becomes more robust to emphasize the depth of emotion that’s tied to this event. The lyrics within the chorus break down the letter into three sections: the first section describes the pain of having an absent parent, the second section details how DESTÍNA did not let this effect the future she envisioned and achieved for herself, and the third section informs her father that she’s finally ready to let go. The second verse builds on this idea of letting go; within it DESTÍNA states, “And I can’t lose what I never lost”. It’s perplexing to a first-time listener but it offers a thought-provoking question. If a parent walks away from their family, can they truly be considered a parent to begin with? This insight places an absent parent’s role in your life into a well-needed perspective. By removing their significance, you rightfully place them where they belong – in nonexistence. A poetically just punishment. As the song progresses, the synths blossom and take on a lighter feeling to demonstrate the freedom DESTÍNA has loaned herself now that she’s letting go. The current Nashville resident, DESTÍNA, is no stranger to pop stardom or Pop Passion. After being one of the fan favorites on NBC’s The Voice, she pursued her own project. Since the beginning of it, DESTÍNA has brought audiences impactful and emotional singles to enjoy. Its also shown her impressive range and diversity in the atmosphere she creates, too. Her latest single, “let me tell you” is the fifth single to be released and is her most vulnerable yet. If you’ve enjoyed DESTÍNA’s open letter as much as I have, show her some virtual love in the form of streams, likes, and follows! It’s also the best way to keep up with the artist to hear details about her upcoming releases. Written by Giavanna Gradaille FOLLOW DESTÍNA:

  • Review: "Forever Boy" - Rosa Raye

Rosa Raye tackles the woes of modern dating with her new single, "Forever Boy." In this age, it's common for there to be a lack of commitment in dating as people like to keep their options open. We're in a frustrating phase of situationships and hookup culture, leaving people who are looking for love and meaningful relationships frustrated. Raye addresses this in "Forever Boy," refusing to subscribe to the state of today's dating. She makes it clear she's done listening to bad advice, like needing a backup guy or pretending to not be too interested in someone. Raye states, “I think sometimes our fear of missing out or making the wrong choice actually means that we are missing out. If we're not fully present, and if we don't go "all in", we don't get to experience those great feelings and things on the other side of that door. I think there's power in making a choice and closing doors." "Forever Boy" makes it clear it's time to throw away modern dating rules and to stop being commitment-phobes. "Forever Boy" is an upbeat, fresh new addition to the pop world. The track features funky guitar riffs and energetic beats, perfect for dancing your blues away. The catchy anthem quickly diffuses any pent up frustrations relating to modern dating, giving listeners an exuberant track to decompress to. Raye's smooth, mellifluous vocals deliver lyrics that will resonate with anyone tired of the modern dating atmosphere and/or cynical dating advice. The talented pop artist unpacks her exasperation from the dating world in the best way possible, providing an infectious song that will serve her and her fans as an outlet and escape from the modern dating nightmares. Hailing from Copenhagen, Rosa Raye is a rising singer-songwriter with an upbringing that adds a Scandinavian twist to her sound—a sound that could have otherwise come out of LA or London. The pop artist infuses elements of R&B, soul, and electronic music into her songs, creating her distinctive sound. Powerful hooks, smooth vocals, and catchy melodies define her sound, supporting the relatable lyrics present in her music. Raye, an ambitious, driven artist, works hard to deliver messages of empowerment in her songs, representing herself as an honest friend to her fans. She often turns her personal experiences into songs, keeping her music open and approachable to listeners. Raye has previously been supported by Soundvenue (DK), Bands of Tomorrow (DK), and music blogs around the world. Releasing her first single on Spotify in 3 years with "Forever Boy," 2023 ushers in a new chapter for Raye, and hopefully there will be much more to come. • Review: "Down For Anything" - Daniel Levi

There’s a Japanese proverb that goes: “Be like a bamboo. It bends, but does not break; it is flexible, yet firmly rooted.” You need to surround yourself with people who push you to take on new adventures and be the best you can be. While doing so, it is important to stay grounded. In his new groovy pop-R&B track, “Down For Anything,” Daniel Levi writes about this and how much more fulfilling life can be when you embrace whatever it throws at you. Levi took the title quite literally when you accepted an Instagram follower’s dare to jump out of a plane. You can go watch the video of how it all went down on his YouTube channel. The instrumentation of “Down For Anything” fits the chill and carefree mood of the title. The drums begin in the first verse as Levi sings, “I don’t mind a little rain on my suit.” I really like this line because I think it embodies the title and sets the tone of the whole song. Levi is ready to face the unexpected. He doesn’t mind getting his hands dirty if need be. I also liked the part at the end of the chorus when Levi sings “down, down, down” It gave the song a pop sound and made it catchy. Another aspect I liked about this particular part was the electric guitar in the background. It blended with the drums and matched the inflection of the vocals. Needless to say, I think all listeners will be inspired to adopt Levi’s carefree vibe by the end of the song. Daniel Levi is a singer/songwriter from Estonia who has started to gain international attention. If you want to hear more of him, his 2015 single, “On & On,” is a dance track that bears an inspirational message about fighting for love. The song has acquired over 600 million streams on Spotify and Youtube. “Down For Anything” is Levi’s first release of 2023. He is currently working hard on his first full-length studio album that is expected to be ready by October of this year. He hit the ground running with this first song and I can’t wait to listen to the rest. Follow all of his socials down below to be the first to hear of his new music. • Review: "Saints" - Agnes Hustler

Agnes Hustler wrote her newest single “Saints” as the first single in her upcoming debut album “Agnes Dei” which will be released on June 2nd. The song’s purpose was to “interlace the duality of being a queer, sexual feminine being and a virgin martyr-a saint.” She wrote this song as a celebration to all those in the LGBTQI community. Everyone is special, and all identities should be celebrated. It was Agnes’ hope that her message and music live on into the next life and all the lives after that; a commemoration and admiration of all the unique people that make up this world. This song sets up for the upcoming album beautifully, and we cannot wait to hear the rest. The eerie chimes and steady rhythm bring us into the first verse of the song, which is layered with more electronic beats for a very unique sound. Pop melodies are worked into a more soulful sound, mostly coming from Agnes’s voice. There is a lot of duality in this song; seemingly opposite things existing as one, from the lyrical choices to the instruments provided. They are combinations you would not normally think of, but they work extraordinarily together. The song’s overall electric feel is heightened in the chorus where Agnes makes it clear that saints will never die. Overall, the song is extremely fun and upbeat, a perfect addition to any high-energy playlist. Inspired by Lady Gaga, Trove Lo, and Rihanna, Agnes Hustler has been working throughout her entire career to craft her “orange universe,” that draws us in. Born in Luleå, Sweden, Agnes’ original interest in music sparked at the young age of just two years old. Throughout her entire young life, she performed in choirs and learned to play the guitar and piano. This led to her introduction to songwriting at age thirteen, and eventually the decision to start her own record label Agnes Dei at age twenty. Agnes has been referenced to be “well on her way to becoming a powerhouse in Swedish pop,” according to international music magazines such as Bands of Tomorrow. We are excited to see what the next steps are in Agnes’ growing career! Written By Molly Schiff FOLLOW AGNES:
