Ever become too overstimulated or overwhelmed with just life in general? Georgia Meek creates a step by step guide on how to deal with it in her new alt-pop single, “Lavender.” The invigorating track shares the struggle of a girl who is clouded with anxiety, and what she does to help cope with it. The instrumentals themselves are stimulating, with their upbeat chords and popcorn drums, almost acting like a coping mechanism to get out of a funk and feel as liberated as the electric music. On the other hand, the urgency of the lyrical beat in the chorus might suggest otherwise, as if we’re looking into her brain and are seeing the rush of thoughts pounding away one after another. Either way, Georgia Meek shows that we are not alone in feeling this way; and there are ways we can help to dissipate the cloud over our heads. Her main suggestion: take time and smell the lavender. Like a powerful windstorm, the song picks up incessant controlling thoughts and throws them into the lyrics and instrumentation. Almost instantaneously, the track cuts straight from the battle of anxiety in the pre-chorus to the fast-paced list of coping with it in the chorus, “Take a xanny, do some yoga/ Meditate and smell lavender;” just some of the things she lists. The production takes the song to a whole new level, with its sheer techno candied synths, bubbling over swinging drums that elicit Georgia Meek’s studded vocals. It’s the little things that tie the song together though, featuring micro clips of adlibs in the background to fit with the lyrics: the sound of a phone switching off, a bottle of pills pouring and the sound of a tv channel. It seems like the song is never-ending just like her thoughts, and it’s not until she yells “stop!” at the end, when the song comes to a halt. Suggesting that she has found some sort of inner switch to quiet her mind. After listening to “Lavender,” one may feel all of their worries disappear, emulating the benefits from the herb itself; which was most likely the point. The London based alternative-pop artist, Georgia Meek, has cultivated a grand following of millennials through the powerful messages that she integrates into her music. Joey Paradis' newest single is one pop song you don’t wanna miss out on. Known for mixing his bass-driven dance music, DJ and Producer Joey Paradis released his new single “MABY” featuring singer and songwriter Otto Palmborg. Listeners can pick up on his unique sound of deep disco elements in this new electronic pop song. Joey’s got a fun song on his hands that makes you just wanna get up, move around, and get lost in. Which is something that I learned this artist does really well, in other songs too. “MABY” was released this November and has already climbed its way to Joey’s top song on Spotify. I can envision this upbeat track being played on a Friday night during an evening out with friends. Infatuation can almost be an addictive feeling that we want to hold on to for as long as possible. Being absolutely drawn to another person and even going to the extent of having your thoughts revolve solely around them can be an exhilarating feeling. It almost feels like you’re high just off the thought of them. Almost Orange takes lyrics describing this exact feeling and pairs it with a techno beat to create their new piece “Infatuation.” This song sounds like what it is to be infatuated with another person. The intense beat, the lighter vocals, and the dance-techno melody translate the feeling of infatuation into sound. Almost Orange created a perfect “summer feel” song with this latest work and is the perfect dance-techno song. “Infatuation” is as exhilarating to listen to as the feeling of infatuation itself. This song is deep in the sense that there are a lot of different sounds and haptics that make up the piece itself. They use backup vocals, a very prominent beat, and different noises to create depth for this piece. Keeping the melody this diverse is what captures listeners’ attention and makes the piece very interesting to listen to. As for the lyrics themselves, this piece involves a very light-hearted and exciting topic. Any song involving good emotions and anything involving the happy side of love immediately makes it a happy tune. The vocals include those of Sanna Martinez, and her voice adds to the light-hearted theme of this entire piece. Her voice is very happy and light and stays prominent throughout the piece. Between the depth of the melody and beat with the overall vibe of the vocals and lyrics, this techno piece is very uplifting. Almost Orange is a duo comprised of the very talented Sanna Martinez and Maximilian. This group is very new to the music industry releasing their debut single “Waggle Dance“ within the past year. Just like “Infatuation,” their other two singles that they have released have the same upbeat techno vibe. Sanna and Maximilian do an amazing job at writing and producing intricate beats and melodies. All three of their songs are in the same genre and give the same vibe, but they are all very distinct from one another. This duo creates very different beats and melodies for each of their songs making each one very personable sounding. JHN and Heberlein’s November 2021 single received a creative facelift from EDM producers, Ched and Magnemyr. “High Then Low (Ched & Magnemyr Remix)” keeps the same incredible vocals of Heberlein and the catchy melodies of JHN. However, they add their own spin to the song creating the ultimate EDM remix. The song tells the story of a rocky relationship that resembles a rollercoaster. One minute, they are happy and in love and the next they are unsure what their partner is feeling. They want to be together, but are stuck in a never-ending cycle. They know that the relationship will inevitably end but they continue to ride this rollercoaster until the bitter end. They do not want to be without one another, but they understand this destructive relationship cannot continue forever. The lyrics perfectly capture the feelings of heartbreak and grief that factor into the tragic ending of a love affair. JHN and Heberlein brought in Ched and Magnemyr to spruce up their 2021 single. The new beats and electronic melodies make for an incredible break-up song. The production sticks in the listener’s head and stands out amongst other songs. Heberlein’s angelic voice flows flawlessly with the melodies her and JHN initially brought to the song, as well as the new additions brought into this version. The team of artists on this song work well together to create a song that sounds brand new, while simultaneously maintaining the integrity of the original. The EDM production feels so authentic to the genre that EDM legends would be thoroughly impressed with the song. “High Then Low (Ched & Magnemyr Remix)” is an incredible pop song that proves the talent of every artist involved. JHN, Heberlein, and Ched are Swedish artists all signed under the same label, Ninetone Group. “High Then Low” is not the first collaboration between JHN and Heberlein. In June 2021, they released a single together titled “Think About Us”. This was Heberlein’s first single. She then released her debut solo single shortly after. Heberlein has already released an EP in 2022 and is set to release a second one later this year. JHN has a prolific career as an electronic-pop artist, having a mixture of solo singles as well as collaborations with other artists. He debuted in 2019 and has been releasing hits ever since. Ched is an EDM producer and songwriter. He began his career in 2018 and has been collaborating with several artists to create fun, uplifting songs. His debut album was released in 2021. This album is filled with collaborations that showcase his talent and range. Magnemyr is a popular Swedish social media influencer with a massive following on Instagram and YouTube. Despite having only released a few original singles, he has already gained recognition in the EDM scene. He takes inspiration from artists such as Zedd, Grey, and many more. Jenny Baker sings a tale we know all too well in her new hit, “Called It Off”. This song is like an excerpt from the diary we keep hidden in the back of our mind. When two people have an indescribable connection filled with deep love and inexplicable passion, it can seem like a never-ending game. That mad love is like a carousel, whipping around, and no one is able to find the stop button, and someone is inevitably going to get hurt. It’s nearly impossible to get over someone when they’re never really gone, and that is the story told in Jenny’s chilling song. You convince yourself you two are destined to be together because you can’t imagine either of you ever meeting someone who would come close to rivaling the connection and history. You’ll meet new people; you might even fall in love, but your heart rests easy knowing it’ll never love them like they loved him, and if, and when, this fails, we can finally be together again. It’s a twisted level of comfort that we admit only to ourselves, and then the unthinkable happens, and they move on causing the only sentiment you truly believed to crumble in an instant. We know what we had, and we cannot fathom a world in which they would choose someone new over us and all our past, and suddenly we’re more hurt than ever because we become replaceable in an instant and all the consoling memories we held on to dissipate along side. “Called It Off” has an ethereal start with the instrumental mirroring drifting off to sleep and waking up in dream. Jenny Baker really paints a picture with her words, and you feel as if you’re watching a movie in the projector of your mind. From start to finish, you are right there along side her experiencing the pain from this breakup as if it were happening to you. Her lyrics are sharp and her pain is tangible through your speakers. In the intro she says, “I wish we’d crash and burned cuz the slow burn’s worse,” and in one line she sets the tone for the entire song and encompasses a relatable, sometimes indescribable feeling into words. Anyone who has gone through a similar situation with a partner will feel the weight of every line she sings. It’s almost as if she went into the file cabinet of every heartbroken woman’s mind and finally said the words we wish we had the courage to. “Called It Off” is a captivating pop song that will leave her audience hooked and hopefully help people heal when they realize this is a universal experience, and in her music, we learn we are not alone. Jenny Baker is an incredibly talented singer/songwriter. She yearns for her eclectic pop sound and raw, transparent lyrics to empower her listeners. Jenny is a recent graduate from Harvard, and she is a member of the Berklee College of music Dual Degree Program where she studied songwriting, performance, and music business. Black people tend to be placed in the box of RnB and Hip-Hop. Though many of these artists take heavy inspiration from these genres, they rarely participate in them. This leads to the lack of acknowledgment of black artists who create some of the most thought-provoking and iconic work out there. The world is blind to their talent because they would rather place these genre-bending artists into the category of urban music. This top 10 list highlights some of my favorite black pop artists that should be getting the recognition they deserve in the genre. 10. Morgan Reese Starting strong with some incredible vibes. Sometimes the track will sound chill and wavy; other times its bass guitar heavy and leaning towards pop grunge. Morgan Reese never sticks to one genre entirely and is always playing around with new sounds. Her music is kind of like Art pop with Alternative folky vocals but that isn’t always the case. That is the appeal of Morgan Reese. You never quite know what you'll get but you'll always love the results. Whatever you want to call her genre, it's always interesting to listen to. Morgan Reese steps out of the pop box and into so many different genres. Yet, she does it in a way that is compelling and cohesive. Morgan never misses a beat; each song is like a breath of fresh air. I can't get enough of her. 9. MAYA B Maya B is taking up well-deserved space in the pop genre. She has the voice, the fashion, and the personality needed to be labeled a star and she holds that title well. Her music is pop infused with RnB and a dash of sweet, sweet electropop now and then. Her lyrics revolve around some real intimate and sometimes emotional topics but they are packaged in beautiful pop bows. Things like feeling lonely, anti-materialism, and self-love are just a few of the topics Maya B touches on in her music. Her heart goes into each of these songs and it gives them a relatable feeling that is alluring to many of us. 8. Precious Do you miss 90s pop music? Me too, and Precious has us covered. Her cloud-soft voice tends to be paired with a bubblegum pop aesthetic that is so dearly missed. She mixes these aesthetics with K-Pop influences that mesh so perfectly together. Her sound evokes a childlike playfulness that only she can pull off. Precious stands out amongst the rest because of the hyper-feminine nature of her sound. Everything is soft and danceable. You just want to have fun with Precious. Her music feels like visiting Barbie's dream house in the best way possible. She’s bringing back the bubblegum pop sound the world has been missing and I am 100% here for it. 7. J $ensei J $ensei is such a cool artist. Where can you find an expert mix of indie pop, electro nostalgia, and a dash of Alt rock except for in J $ensei’s discography? Every song is a different journey leading to a similar destination. They all have the same underlying genre but the way they interact with that genre is ALWAYS new. He has a serious talent for creating something compelling and different with each track he releases. It’s hard to place his music into one box. He is an indie pop artist that simultaneously throws out the concept of the genre altogether. It is incredibly refreshing to come across an artist who blows off the genre and just makes something awesome in their bedroom. J $ensei expertly mixes 808 beats and natural instruments, such as guitar, into each track to create a truly distinctive sound. His sound is so recognizably his, it's chaotic and calm, unfamiliar and familiar, but utterly J $ensei. 6. Arlo Parks Arlo Parks is an endearing artist. She generates some of the most intoxicating and warm soundscapes heard in the industry. Her music seems so simple and unassuming to many but under the surface, the meanings begin to reveal themselves. Arlo Parks is a poet, this explains the gorgeously arranged lyrics that each song in her discography comes with. She can transform some of the saddest lyrical topics into empowering tunes. She creates a light at the end of the tunnel with every sad lyric she writes. If you're looking for an artist that is comforting and calm but deep and meaningful Arlo Parks is right up your alley. 5. Mora Michelle Mora Michelle is going down the path of alternative bedroom pop. With her quirky instrumentals, she compliments it beautifully with her dreamy vocals that drip with nostalgia. Mora's voice is light and airy, it leaves you suspended in a daydream with each verse. Incorporating jangly guitar plucks and synths that emulate the ever-popular sonics of the 80s, Mora is taking advantage of the decades' resurgence in the best ways possible. Mora Michelle doesn’t have much music out yet but what she does have will certainly make you feel something calm and reminiscent of simpler times. 4. Hemlocke Springs TikTok sensation sure, but Hemlocke Springs is even more than that. She is one of my absolute favorite pop artists out right now. The sheer risk-taking in each song is astonishing and done so well. She puts a twist on the newly formed bedroom pop genre with some avant-garde instrumentals and her unique style of vocals. It seems like once the novelty of her track, Girlfriend, died down she was forgotten about. We can not let that happen. So few artists are taking risks nowadays. Hemlocke Springs is doing it with such style. Though she doesn't have many songs right now, what she does have delves heavily into the Avant-Garde Pop subgenre. If you loved Girlfriend, I highly suggest you check out even more hemlock springs. 3. Isaac Dunbar I was genuinely enraged that I hadn't heard of this artist. When I say artist I mean ARTIST; Everything Isaac Dunbar touches turns to gold. It's a 70s funk rock dreamland luring you into a baroque pop dance hall. You can’t help but move when hearing his music but the moves are always unorthodox. My body was flowing in all different directions; each limb was mimicking a different instrument Isaac so cleverly placed along the instrumental. His witty use of lyricism imitates a fairy tale book at times. Telling stories through the lens of tall tales and fantasy characters like witches showcases his boundless brilliance. From Onion Boy to Fool’s Paradise Isaac treats us to imaginative soundscapes that only he can invent. I might be late but Isaac Dunbar needs his flowers TODAY. 2. Madison Rose Madison Rose is single-handedly bringing back the EDM pop sound of the 2010s. In a time where the music seems to be going in a darker direction sonically, we all can collectively turn towards Madison Rose for the summertime disco tunes that are desperately needed. Her production is always filled to the brim with opulence. Gagging us with her powerhouse vocals and ecstasy-inducing instrumentals. Her music is made for the club and the stage. Popularizing the sound of House music with both her natural voice and a vocoder. She adds texture and vibrancy to her already boisterous and extravagant sound. Madison Rose is setting herself up to be totally iconic. 1. Diamond White I could go on and on about how Diamond White is slept on. Her music puts you on a nostalgic high with every track she releases. I first heard her EP Summerland about a year or so ago and I have been hooked ever since. The instrumentals she creates feel like being transported to another world. Diamond White can paint vivid images in your mind and leave you breathless with each stroke of her pen. Her voice is like silk over the electro-pop instrumentals she pairs it with; it's inviting and comforting. I honestly have no idea how she isn’t a bigger star than she is now. She’s working on Marvel's “Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur" and has released some music for that as well, so she will be a household name soon. Do you listen to any of these artists? Laura Marano’s latest release is an ode to every situationship out there, perfect for the Valentine’s Day blues. “Arrow” discusses the phenomenon of having undeniable, magnetic chemistry with someone, but never following through with it. After running into her person, Marano wrote the song to describe this excruciating experience. It is like clockwork. They reunite by some happenstance, and instantly hit it off. Sparks fly, but neither of them makes a move. Marano tells the story in such vivid detail that the listener feels like they are experiencing it firsthand. The first verse kicks off the track with the lyrics: “Checkmate or checked out// Heart racing, head down// Your face and my mouth// Playing it in my mind// Known you a long time.” These lyrics set the stage of the track, showing the indisputable sexual tension between the two people, while describing the nerves that prevent either of them from making a move. She continues with this structure by re-counting the complicated game of cat and mouse they are playing. They meet up, they talk, they act like two lovers do. They anticipate each other’s next move, only to be left with nothing but disappointment and longing. In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, many would chalk it up to cupid not shooting his arrow, but Marano knows this is not the case. In the chorus, she sings, “Cupid’s in the air tonight// But he got an arrow in a gun fight// Too hard to resist// But we do it anyway// It’s stupid that he wants to try.” She knows that it is not up to Cupid, or anyone else, to bring the couple together. Instead, it is up to one of them to finally make the first move after years of endless games. The track consists of clever lyrics that accentuate Marano’s brilliant songwriting. With “Arrow”, she further highlights her rightful title as a Triple-Threat in the industry. “Arrow” is a remarkable track composed of a complex production and poetic lyrics. The song begins with an elegant, two-string chord progression that effortlessly guides the listener through the verse. Additionally, a synth beat is utilized with a reverb effect that mimics being in an empty stadium. This provides an ethereal element that causes the listener to feel like they are floating on air. When the chorus starts, the bass takes control and the production completely changes. The shift brings an energetic component to the track that pulls influences from multiple different genres. The newly added electric guitar and the fiery energy is reminiscent of the classic rock style, displaying Marano’s phenomenal range. Throughout the track, the listener is blessed with her enchanting voice. The melody is flawlessly paired with the vocal harmonies that further enhances the ethereal atmosphere. Listeners cannot help but be mesmerized by Marano’s impeccable vocals. Chloe Copoloff’s latest release is the perfect song for the broken hearted that have witnessed their former partner move on to their happy ending. “Happiest Day” was written after Copoloff’s first love got married to someone else, while she was still picking up the pieces of her broken heart. Six months prior to the wedding, he had told Copoloff that he still loved her. As a result, the marriage came to her as a shock and she was left devastated. In the chorus, she sings, “You told me 6 months ago// We don’t know what the future holds// But did you know the whole damn time?// There was no goodbye// I knew you wouldn’t let her go// But wish you would’ve let me know// Before all the papers got signed// It’s the happiest day of your life// But I wish it was mine.” These poetic lyrics paint a deeply vulnerable picture, sparing no details. The narrative Copoloff illustrates exposes her former partner for the emotional infidelity he committed against his current spouse. Her open honesty while writing the track was a cathartic experience for her. It allowed her to navigate these complex emotions and heal from the heartache. The song tugs at the heartstrings of listeners and brings tears to their eyes. “Happiest Day” is a beautifully written track that perfectly encapsulates the feelings of heartbreak, longing, and regret. “Happiest Day” is a melancholy ballad that consists of a soft piano production that complements the somber lyrics. Then in the bridge, the song reverts back to the piano-only production, as the song reaches the emotional climax. This accentuates the intensity of the return to the full production in the final verse. Utilizing the compositional muting throughout the track creates a unique dynamic for the song and evokes further feelings of sorrow within the listener. “Happiest Day” uses the delicate production and complex emotions to mesmerize listeners and highlight Copoloff’s remarkable talent. Chloe Copoloff is a 24-year-old singer-songwriter based in Los Angeles. At only 9-years-old, she began writing songs as a form of self-expression. When she was 12-years-old, she learned to play the guitar, which brought a whole new life to her songs. Between working and going to school, I don’t find any spare time for myself. It feels like those two spaces have consumed me whole. I don’t have the energy to dress up like I used to. I consume dangerous amounts of coffee to feel any excitement. And I’ve begun to prematurely gray – and not even in a cool spot, I’m graying in my widow’s peak so it’s much more noticeable. Ultimately, I don’t recognize myself anymore and it’s making me feel a little directionless. Thankfully, Carlay’s “silly sad girl song” makes me feel a little less alone in this experience. Carlay’s “silly sad girl song” is an alternative-pop ode to feeling aimless in life that utilizes heavy symbolism to express this sentiment. The song opens with airy synths that mimic a clock ticking. This is not only a symbolic reminder of how much time has already passed, but how we feel time is actively passing by us while feeling lost in life. It also helps establish some background for the first verse; it’s been some time since the artist has felt like themselves. Even when they do find the energy to build themselves up enough to go out in the second verse, they “trip on my clothes on the floor”. This is a double entendre: there is a literal and figurative meaning within this lyric. Clothes being on the floor perfectly capture the state of disorganization we find ourselves in when feeling aimless. It also represents the dissatisfactory relationship we develop with ourselves when in this emotional state because we’re fully conscious of the fact that we’re not ourselves right now. Carlay emphasizes on this relationship with ourselves in the third verse: “I hate the silence / Walking down the stairs / It all echoes backwards / Reminds me that no one is there”. This verse is powerful – it acknowledges how we no longer feel at home within ourselves when feeling lost. On top of already feeling aimless, we’re confronted with the fact that we’ve lost a piece of our identity, too. The chorus drops, and summarizes the notions we’ve become familiar with in the previous verses. But the melody suddenly takes on a bouncy mood – it’s an emblematic change in attitude to feeling lost. Whereas before we were quite self-critical, we’re now coming to terms with being in this state of mind. We’re now embracing feeling lost – the embracement of it eventually leads to finding our way again. Carlay is a singer, songwriter, and producer based in Toronto, Canada. Have you ever felt guilty for getting vengeance on someone? Edie Yvonne’s, Random Boy, reflects on a boy on the train that did something to make her upset. Although it is not clear as to what was done to make her feel this way, Edie does reveal that she did do something to get revenge. However, she constantly overthinks this act and goes back and forth between saying, “ I made a mistake ”, to threatening him with, “ Don’t forget, I know your name .” Edie uses this song as her way of speaking directly to this mystery boy, and realizing that she didn’t deserve what he did to her, and in order for him to learn that, she gets even. A lot of the time, it's the nicest and innocent people that get treated wrong, which makes sense seeing Edie go back and forth saying that getting revenge on this boy was a “ mistake ” and wasn’t. We see her call him out of his name multiple times and threaten him with more revenge if he attempts to do anything else because she says, “ I’ve been counting your mistakes” , as well as, “Don’t forget, I know your name.” Throughout the song, we hear a steady beat with the guitar and drums. We see Edie admitting to a “ mistake ” she made involving the boy on the train, but once she realizes that it was rather an act of fair vengeance, the beat slows down. This is when we hear her say, “ To a random boy on the train. Don't forget, I know your name. Random boy on the train. I wrote a little song .” Soon after this, the beat picks back up, the instrumentation becomes louder, she projects her voice and then says, “ Fuck you. Quit playing dumb, you know what you’ve done. You’re never going nowhere, but I really don’t care, you piece of shit .” This “ Random Boy ” on the train was at fault for starting some issues with Edie, and this song is a warning for him to never try that again. Edie Yvonne is a 14 year old singer, songwriter and actress based in Los Angeles, California. At the age of 13 and during the pandemic, she wrote an album titled, “ At Ease ” which is also the title of a short film that she starred in.
