- Review: "Dramatic" - Dasha
Dasha takes out all her anger in her new single, “Dramatic”. She wrote this song after her ex-boyfriend called her over FaceTime to end their relationship. He told her not to tell anyone about them, then went around and got back with his ex-girlfriend while they were together. Being her first love, she was heartbroken at first. Then she came to her senses and was livid. She called her ex-boyfriend out on everything he had done, just for him to say she “was being dramatic”. Throughout the track Dasha calls out the cheating, lying, and manipulation their relationship consisted of. She tells her ex-boyfriend that he can tell his friends she is “fucked in the head” and that she is “a bitch”, but whatever he does, the one thing he cannot call her is “dramatic”. He was the cause of all her pain and anger, and he does not have the right to tell her how she should be feeling. Women are constantly told they are overreacting, especially by the people that hurt and betray them. Dasha takes this narrative and pushes back against it. “Dramatic” is an incredibly powerful single that many women can resonate with. “Dramatic” is Dasha’s most rock song to date. The primary focus of the musical composition are the electric guitar and drums which create an angry breakup song. The rhythm is fast and upbeat; however, the lyrics are intense and vulnerable. Being called dramatic is degrading and invalidating. Dasha took this insult and turned it into inspiration to create her latest masterpiece. She wanted her emotions to be heard. Dasha has every right to be furious. Not only was her heart shattered, but the one that broke her heart is the same one that told her she was overreacting. Dasha takes her anger out in this song. It can be heard in her powerful vocals. Dasha is a singer-songwriter from San Luis Obispo, California. She has been writing and performing her own music since she was twelve years old. She works closely with her older brother, Brado, who helps produce her music. In 2021, she released her debut EP, $hiny Things. She has nearly 150,000 monthly listeners on Spotify and multiple songs with over one million streams each. Dasha thrives to make music that is authentically her own and does not want to hold back from her true self. Written By Karlee Smith FOLLOW DASHA:
- Review: "Boring People" - Sunny.
Sunny’s highly anticipated debut single has dropped, and it exceeds expectations. Their single, “Boring People”, is a gloomy ballad that tells the story of a specific type of heartbreak—One where everything changes in a moment and the breakup is inevitable. Melodie Wagner’s dreamy vocals take the listener on a nostalgic journey to the couple’s past, reminiscing on the times when everything was easier. She wishes they could go back to being “boring”, because “boring people don’t change”. Now, things are complicated, and they have problems. If they can just revert to how they were in the beginning, then maybe they can avoid the hard truth that the relationship has reached its end. This is an incredibly emotional and vulnerable song that moves listeners and highlights the complexity of ending a once loving relationship. Sunny’s members have been writing songs together for over a decade, so it is no surprise that their debut single is emotionally charged and flawlessly crafted. After writing this song during lockdown, they realized their potential as co-writers. From that moment on, they knew that their songwriting can be very honest and vulnerable. That when they work together, they can let their emotions lead the way. “Boring People” is the perfect debut single for the duo because it highlights Melodie Wagner’s flawless voice and Ben Tan’s brilliant production. The musical composition is simple, yet elegant. A song of this subject does not need to have intense production, but rather it should have a calming element to compliment the vulnerable lyrics. “Boring People” is beautifully crafted to emphasize the remarkable talent of both members of Sunny. Sunny is an Australian pop duo consisting of songwriters Melodie Wagner and Ben Tan. They split their time between London, Los Angeles, and Nashville. The duo has been writing together for over 10 years. They are both members of the Grammy-Nominated, international Christian worship band, Hillsong Young And Free. They are credited as songwriters on several different projects, showing off their versatility. Now they are ready to take on the world as their own artists, creating vulnerable music from the heart. - Review: "nevermind" - Jayde
“nevermind” is the latest release from incredibly talented artist, Jayde. This song discusses her own internal struggles regarding what she wants in this stage of her life. She was having an emotional battle with the little devil on her shoulder, telling her she should let go of the healthiest relationship she has been in so she could be single. She wanted the freedom to be with new people, but she did not want to be the one to end the relationship. She wanted her partner to mess up so she would have a true reason to leave. In the song, the lyrics highlight her internal battle. She is going back and forth between wanting to stay with her partner because she loves them, and wanting the relationship to end. In the chorus, she starts with saying she wishes they would ruin everything, but then they “get a little bit closer” and Jayde starts to think “nevermind”. She wrote this song while she was in a very stagnant place in her life emotionally and physically. She wanted to create chaos in her life to feel something, but her conscience was telling her not to. “nevermind” is one of Jayde’s most vulnerable songs to date. “nevermind” immediately captivates the listener with the dreamy acoustic guitar intro. Then as Jayde’s angelic vocals begin, the synth beats join her. The production is upbeat and lively, which departs from her previous releases. Jayde is known for her “sad-girl” pop songs, but “nevermind” has introduced a new era of her music. She has decided to take her sad subject matter and revamp it with an upbeat and energetic production. “nevermind” is accompanied by her latest music video. Throughout the video, Jayde is in multiple settings that are one distinctive color. This catches the attention of the viewers, as the bright moving colors create an ever-moving image. The most interesting visual is when Jayde is seen using a Magic 8-Ball. “nevermind” is about her being indecisive and not knowing what she truly wants. In this scene, she is shown turning to this object to make the decision for her. This was a very clever touch to the video, showing that Jayde has given up and has let fate decide for her. “nevermind” is an excellent representation of Jayde’s current music, leaving listeners craving more. Jayde is a pop singer-songwriter from Ontario, Canada. At a young age, Jayde was naturally intrigued by music. Once she became a teenager, she threw herself into her own original songs. - Review: "Overrated" - The Foxies
The Foxies have dropped yet another high-energy pop-punk hit. “Overrated” is their next single from their highly anticipated debut album. The song reflects on the emptiness felt when seeking viral fame. In this current era of social media, artists feel pressure from their labels and managers to partake in trending videos. Several artists have come forward to say that their label will not let them release music if it is not “TikTok worthy”. They are forced to follow what the algorithm wants, not what they want. Even then, a song may only be viral for a week or two, then it will fade. In the chorus, lead singer Julia Lauren Bullock sings, “It goes lights out then you burn out// You never slow down, you never slow down// You get so instantly overrated”. These artists work incredibly hard and never get rest, yet they only have their fame for a moment. Before they know it, their viral success is forgotten, and their hard work was for nothing. The Foxies wrote this song for every artist out there that views their music as art, and not a trend to be forgotten. “Overrated” is a classic pop-punk track with modern day lyrics. The song begins with the steady beat of the drums. In the pre-chorus, the guitar begins to pick up with the beat—no longer a background instrument. The production builds up for the beat drop at the chorus that adds a powerful emphasis to the frustration the band feels. This frustration stems from the pressure placed on them by the music industry. Throughout the song, Julia Lauren Bullock’s voice brings focus to the honest lyrics. Her incredible vocals support the intense lyrics and the catchy beat. Each member of The Foxies brings a different talent to the band, which naturally creates a team of hitmakers. “Overrated” is another song added to their belt that will have listeners jamming along in minutes. The Foxies is a pop-punk band based in Nashville. The band consists of three members: lead singer Julia Lauren Bullock, guitarist Jake Ohlbaum, and drummer Rob Bodley. They released their first single, “Floods”, in 2015. Since then, they have released three EPs and multiple standalone singles. In 2021, The Foxies toured with rock legend, Billy Idol. “Overrated” is the third single from their upcoming debut album, Who Are You Now, Who Were You Then?”, which will be released September 23, 2022. - Review: "Angel On My Shoulder" - Katelyn Butcher
Katelyn Butcher’s latest single, “Angel On My Shoulder”, is an impressive addition to her discography. The song addresses the battle between the good and the bad in the world. She touches on her own internal struggle of wanting to find the good in all the bad, and avoiding the evil surrounding her. This is a subject that is difficult to discuss, yet is very relevant in the modern world. In today’s political, social, and economical landscape, it is hard not to be sucked up into the pessimistic ideologies that come with it. In the pre-chorus, Butcher sings “So why did I let them talk me into all these bad, bad things// I never gave in before, but now I swear I’m losing me… losing me”. She is aware that she is letting herself fall down the rabbit hole of bad decisions—something she has never done before. The angel on her shoulder is screaming and stressing, while the devil on the other one is whispering persuading messages in her ear. It is only a matter of time before she finds out which one will prevail. The moment the song begins, the listener is immediately hooked. The smooth bass guitar sets up a moody, dark tone reminiscent of the 1950s folk rock genre. The production in the background makes for a creepy vibe that flows beautifully with Butcher’s soft vocals. The intensity increases when the electric guitar picks up and the synth beats escalate. The lyrics are vulnerable allowing the listener to feel every emotion. Butcher’s vocals are soft, yet intense. Her voice is made for this edgy, folk rock that is rare to find in the modern era. “Angel On My Shoulder” exceeds every expectation from listeners and is written flawlessly to fit the mood Butcher was wanting to express. Katelyn Butcher is a singer-songwriter based in Los Angeles. In 2018, she released her first single “Darkness to Light”. - Review: "Why Did You Call?" - Sky Katz
Sky Katz recently made her directorial debut with the official music video for her latest single, “Why Did You Call?”. The video is set up as a short film, with dialogue scenes throughout it. Katz has expressed that she has always wanted to make a short film out of one of her songs, but never felt like any matched what she was wanting. After releasing “Why Did You Call?” she realized the vulnerable lyrics told the perfect story and the concept for the video came naturally. The song highlights the aftermath of a relationship that fell apart. The former partner that caused it has now come back, acting like nothing is wrong. In the chorus, Katz asks “Why are you worried how I’ll get home?// Why did you kiss me? You don’t even miss me? So why did you call?” She is questioning her former partner’s motives. Throughout the verses, Katz recalls how in love they both were before things ended. Many of these lyrics are directly paralleled in the music video, creating a complete story that is bound to shed some tears. The story follows the relationship of two young women: Sky, played by Katz herself and Sav, played by her Surviving Summer costar, Savannah LaRain. At the beginning of the video, the relationship seems happy and healthy, until things begin to fall apart. Sav continuously hurts Sky emotionally. After sticking up for herself, Sav calls Sky dramatic for reacting to the pain. Evidentially, this causes the couple to break-up. Fast forward a month later, Sky is seen alone in her room, still mourning the loss of the relationship when she receives a call from Sav. She answers and Sav says she misses her and wants Sky to attend a party she is at. After reluctantly going, Sky finds Sav dancing with an unnamed male. Sky storms out of the building visibly hurt. Sav runs after her and kisses her. It makes for the perfect ending to an emotional video. Katz intention for the video was to normalize a gay relationship that is not often seen on screens. She wants more media to have healthy and happy LGBTQ+ representation. It is hard to believe that this is Katz’s first directorial project because every detail was meticulously thought out and she creates a video that is memorable, leaving audiences wanting more. Sky Katz is a 17-year-old actress and musician from New York. She has the starring role in the new Netflix Original Series, Surviving Summer. Additionally, she plays Tess O’Malley, the spunky neighbor in the That’s So Raven spin-off, Raven’s Home. She was also a contestant on the eleventh season of America’s Got Talent. - Review: "August" - Eliza Harrison Smith
Eliza Harrison Smith’s latest single is a dreamy summer ballad about love slipping away. Her song “August” reflects on the feelings of regret when a relationship ends, and the nostalgia that comes with it. Smith thinks back to a time when she was still happy and in love with her partner. Back in the month of August, their relationship was hot like the summer sun. Now, it is a cold November night and Smith is alone with nothing but her thoughts and a broken heart. She sings, “But I can’t shake the thought that if somehow// I could relive August one more time// I think I’d get it right.” She wishes she could hit rewind on the relationship and take back the words that led to the ending. August was a time of happiness and sunshine, but now all Smith experiences are gloomy days. “August” is a beautiful indie-pop ballad that captures the essence of summertime. Smith’s intention for the song’s production was to “capture the light, breezy vibe of the end of the summer.” She flawlessly succeeds as this song sounds exactly like the feelings described. The soft, indie production showcases Smith’s emotional lyrics without overpowering them. - Review: "Hate To Love You" - Eliza Bennett
“Hate To Love You” tells the story of Eliza Bennett’s move to sunny Los Angeles, California from the small town in England where she grew up. She has a love-hate relationship with her new home, along with the trials and tribulations that come with it. L.A. has become the “bad boyfriend she couldn’t leave." This is an all too familiar story to so many artists that come to the city of angels to chase their dreams. Bennett admits that she has tried to hate this city that has broken her, but she cannot give up on it. In the chorus she sings, “I’ll hate to love you//City of broken dreams// And yet you mend my tattered seams." This city has continuously beaten her, and yet it has also built her up. Her relationship with this city is an uphill battle, leaving Bennett wondering if her dream is worth the pain. “Hate to Love You” has a freshness to it that cannot be replicated. The track compliments Bennett’s ethereal vocals with a production that is simultaneously unique and familiar. It feels like a comforting hug from a friend, but it is something not quite heard in modern music. The song starts with a soothing piano and violin melody, fitting perfectly with the vocals. The chorus begins with this classical influenced melody, but then switches to a modern pop beat that lights up the song. The song continues with this structure, which highlights the unique attributes of the song. “Hate To Love You” is an incredible addition to Bennett’s discography, continuing to show off her impressive ability to captivate audiences. - Review: "She's Got You" - Jennie Harluk
Artists often use songwriting as a form of escapism. Many times, songwriters will put themselves in the shoes of another person, whether fictional or real. In Jennie Harluk’s latest single, “She’s Got You”, she reimagines a different version of herself. She often wears her heart on her sleeve, leaving her emotions out in the open. However, in “She’s Got You”, she lives vicariously through a version of herself who acts extremely cavalier about heartache. Rather than showing her hurt, she fights back with “nonchalant comments” about her ex-boyfriend. In the first verse, Harluk drops the bombshell when she sings, “She seems nice// We look alike// And I know that’s just your type”. Her ex-boyfriend replaced her with a new girl that could be her carbon copy. She then spends the rest of the song dropping more snide remarks. However, her hurt slips out when she sings, “And I’m haunted by the thought of you// Cause it’s all I got when she’s got you.” Through all the sass and indifference, Harluk still allows heart wrenching words to creep through. This song is eloquently crafted with lyrics of hurt, betrayal, and resentment. “She’s Got You” is a catchy pop-song that highlights Harluk’s strong vocals and emotional lyrics. The verses are steady and calm, slowly leading up to the faster tempo in the chorus. Although the bridge continues the steady and calm structure of the verses, it hits the emotional peak of the song when she sings, “I’m still yours, but you’re not mine.” These lyrics are a punch to the gut because despite all the sarcasm, Harluk is clearly hurt. The music takes a back seat at the end of the bridge, honing in on the lyrics as the chorus returns. Right before the beat drops, Harluk’s voice beautifully harmonizes showing off her insane vocal range. “She’s Got You” showcases her powerhouse vocals that listeners fall in love with her for. Jennie Harluk is a singer-songwriter from Calgary, Canada. From a young age, music has been her passion, and this passion has followed her into her full-time career as an artist. She is involved in every step of the creative processing. She writes, composes, and produces her own music. Her songwriting process is very unique to other artists. With her talent, she has already been featured on several Spotify playlists and has performed at big events, such as Calgary Stampede and Country Thunder. - Review: "Closer" - Hunter
Sugarland crossed with breezy pop sums up Hunter’s latest single. With the intention of capturing a relaxing, summer afternoon vibe, “Closer” captivates audiences and overwhelms them with joy. She explores the exciting rush one feels when experiencing a new relationship. With catchy lyrics, and a hook that sticks, this track is destined to be on everyone’s budding romance playlists. Leading up to the chorus, Hunter works up the courage to ask if the person she likes will “give it a shot.” Then the chorus hits, and the song bursts to life. She tells this potential lover to move “Closer// Move on over till you can’t get closer to me.” She wants to fill the emotional and physical gap between them, and be together at last. Coincidentally, this song has a double meaning for Hunter and her co-writers. The song has evolved into a metaphor for the aftermath of the global COVID-19 pandemic. Now that the world is slowly transitioning back to normal, we can now “get closer to our loved ones.” This makes the happy, upbeat vibe of the song stand out even more after the past few years of isolation and heartache. Hunter’s intention was to bring joy to listeners which she implements flawlessly with “Closer”. Hunter wrote “Closer” with Grammy nominated producer and mixer, John Alagia, and prolific songwriter, David Ryan Harris. Their collective talent effortlessly blends together to create an outstanding track. The song has an upbeat melody that resembles what could be heard during a romance movie’s honeymoon phase montage. The musical foundation is in the muted acoustic guitar that is complimented by the electric guitar that comes in later. The drums provide for a nice, steady beat that strengthens the cheerful ambiance. A keyboard can be heard in the background giving the song character that it would be lacking without it. The song would not be complete without Hunter’s unique vocals that show off her incredible range. She pairs the song with a fun, lighthearted music video featuring her adorable dog and colorful aesthetics. The peppy, joyful mood is perfectly captured in this video, further spreading the happiness. “Closer” is another remarkable single that makes fans anticipate her upcoming EP. Skylar Lee released an energetic pop anthem about female empowerment and self-confidence. “Modern Art” is intended to lift women up who second guess their worth. Often times, women write themselves off as not being good enough. Whether it is romantic relationships, friendships, or careers, women question if they were overlooked by someone because they are not worthy. In “Modern Art”, Lee flips this narrative and encourages women to see themselves as they truly are: a work of art. Rather than believing they’re not good enough, Lee wants to remind women that they are a masterpiece. To remind them that if someone does not see their potential, then it is probably because they only appreciate dull modern art.
