- Review: "Dangerous" - Madison Beer
Madison Beer’s latest single takes the listener on a journey of heartache, vulnerability, and self-discovery. “Dangerous” reflects on her previous relationships, including her own responsibility in their endings. The heartbreaking ballad is the beginning of a new era for Beer—one that is exceptionally more honest and mature than her previous chapters. Though the background of the song is rooted in multiple relationships, the lyrics focus on her most recent break-up. Throughout the song, she questions where the relationship went wrong and what she could have done differently. At the end of the chorus, she drops the hook by stating, “Guess I make love too dangerous.” Beer is blaming herself for their relationship ending, and questioning if she is “unlovable.” This song perfectly encapsulates all the feelings of self-doubt and anxiety that happens after a break-up, especially one that ended abruptly and inexplicably. “Dangerous” is a hauntingly beautiful work of art that emphasizes Beer’s extraordinary talent. The musical composition is led by a string orchestra that resembles elegant Broadway musicals. Beer’s ethereal harmonies add an additional element of elegance that, combined with the production, takes the listener to another world. For the four minutes of the track, the listener is transported to a dreamy landscape that allows them to escape from their troubles. Likewise, the accompanying music video is a breathtaking masterpiece. Beer is seen wearing a gorgeous glittery black ball gown, standing on a platform surrounded by the beautiful orchestra. The simplicity of the video is crucial, highlighting the vulnerability and heartache in the lyrics. The pain and longing Beer is feeling is evident in her performance. The old Hollywood aesthetic makes the video appear timeless and classy. At the end of the music video, the orchestra exits the scene and the lights turn off, leaving Beer alone. This gloomy finale in which Beer is left alone with only her thoughts resembles the feelings brought on after a sudden breakup. Madison Beer is a singer-songwriter from New York. After massive viral success over the past few years, she was signed with Epic Records in 2019. Then in 2021, she released her debut full-length album, Life Support. Beer has seen immense support from big names in the music industry, such as Billboard, V Magazine, Nylon, and NME. Prior to the release of “Dangerous”, she released “Reckless”, the lead single to her upcoming sophomore album. Beer is not only a musician, but an ambassador for Fenty Beauty and the face of Victoria Secret’s Tease Fragrances line. With a high following on all platforms, partnerships with top brands, and music that sticks with listeners, Beer is on a quick path to becoming a household name. - Review: "god has a sense of humor" - GAYLE
Up until now, GAYLE’s releases have been high-energy, angsty rock anthems. However, in her latest single, “god has a sense of humor”, she brings out her emotional side. The song tackles one of life’s hardest questions: what is the reason for existence? GAYLE wants to have hope for the future—hope for eternity. She is teetering off of a thin line, trying to balance the pessimistic and optimistic outlooks on life and why we are put on this earth. When the song starts, GAYLE does not waste any time on letting the audience know what the song is about. She begins the song with the insightful lyrics, “When I was 13// A friend of mine died// That’s when I realized// That we don’t live forever.” The passing of someone her age, especially when she was so young, opened her eyes to the philosophical questions about life. In the chorus, she leans into the optimistic side of her ideologies. She believes that people are not inherently good nor bad, but that we are all just trying to make it through this scary world in one piece. At the end of the chorus, she drops the incredibly clever hook that, “God’s got a sense of humor// And I’m not in on the joke.” GAYLE makes listeners reconsider with “god has a sense of humor” and reevaluate their own opinions on the matter. Rather than a high energy anthem, GAYLE slows down her traditional vibe to match the melancholy lyrics in “god has a sense of humor”. The opening of the song begins with a beautiful piano melody that sets the tone of the song, instantly putting the listener into the intimate scene GAYLE has painted. As the song progresses, the bass guitar subtly begins in the background before the drums make their entrance. The drums, eventually led by the ride cymbal, add to the light airy production. The lyric video that accompanies the song provides for another thought-provoking addition to the track. In the video, the lyrics are written in a font that is similar to what a young child may write. The resemblance to a child’s handwriting symbolizes innocence—the kind that GAYLE lost at thirteen years old. “god has a sense of humor” is an emotional addition to an overall angsty discography that highlights GAYLE’s impressive range. Taylor Gayle Rutherfurd, better known as GAYLE, is an 18-year-old pop singer-songwriter. In 2021, she signed with Atlantic Records and released her single, “abcdefu”. Quickly the song went viral on TikTok and Instagram, gaining her a significant following on social media. Her massive success resulted in her earning a Billboard Music Award nomination and two MTV Video Music Award nominations. In March 2022, she released her debut EP, a study of the human experience volume one, which included “abcdefu”. - Review: "Die In LA" - Hunter Daily
Hunter Daily’s debut single dives straight into the vulnerability that many artists have a tendency to avoid until their later releases. Instead, in “Die In LA”, she eloquently tackles the struggles of living in Los Angeles and the feelings of wanting to leave the city. This love-hate relationship with the city of Angels is a common theme found in many songs, but Daily’s perspective is unique. Born and raised in Los Angeles, L.A. has always been her home. Many people in her industry previously lived another life, in another city, while Daily has not been able to experience this. Having been stuck in L.A. her entire life, she is now yearning to experience life on the other side. She desires to make a risky move to follow her dreams like her colleagues did when they moved to her hometown, but she is already where she needs to be for her dreams to flourish. In the second verse, she struggles with this notion when she sings, “It’s not a home if you’re a hostage// I wanna see the other sites// Held up by everything I want// How do I leave it all behind?”. She feels trapped in L.A. and questions if her dream is worth living and dying in her hometown. With all these existential questions in mind, Daily knows that no matter what, L.A. will always have a special place in her heart. “Die In LA” is a powerful piano-led ballad that completely immerses the listener into the emotions experienced by Daily. The track begins soft and slow, drawing focus on the lyrics and introducing the melancholy scene. As the song continues to the chorus, the music erupts into a whimsical synth production that brings out the life in the track. Paired with Daily’s ethereal vocals, the composition expresses the strong emotions that are overwhelming her. In the accompanying music video, Daily is pictured in multiple scenes, including a busy party and driving around L.A. in a vintage car. The video parallels the lyrics throughout the song that are making her want to leave, while simultaneously highlighting the beauty of the city that is compelling her to stay. “Die In LA” is a clever musical debut that tells the listener exactly who Hunter Daily is, and the kind of artist she is destined to be. Hunter Daily is a singer-songwriter and actress from Los Angeles. She is the daughter of the prominent voiceover actress, EG Daily, and famous poker player, Richard Solomon. - Review: "I Don't Wanna Want It" - The Foxies
A part of being human is having an insatiable appetite for things that we may not need—even things that can harm us. The Foxies address this self-destructive phenomenon in their latest single, “I Don’t Wanna Want It”. Despite knowing that what they are craving is toxic, they still invite it in and revel in the danger. Although this song could be about anything, The Foxies hone in on toxic relationships with people they care for deeply. “I Don’t Wanna Want It” is composed of lyrics that highlight this “self-destructive lust” that they want to resist, but for some reason cannot let go of. In the chorus, the lyrics reveal these hazardous behaviors. The band sings, “You give me scars, I let them bleed// You lit the match, I’m gasoline// It’s making me numb, is that what you want?// ‘Cause I don’t wanna want it.” Not only are they aware of this toxic one-way street, but they believe this person actively wants to tear them down. “I Don’t Wanna Want It” addresses a sensitive topic and allows listeners to release their emotions. “I Don’t Wanna Want It” is an upbeat pop-punk song with a dark background. - Review: "Back To You" - Alexander Stewart
When a heart is broken, the smallest reminder can trigger a person, causing them to revert back into a state of sorrow and longing. Alexander Stewart is no stranger to this experience and pours his broken heart out in his latest single, “Back To You”. He is reminiscing on the love he lost eight months prior and wondering why everything always leads him “back to you.” The emotionally vulnerable song was inspired by a moment when he was driving a friend to the airport, and remembered that same drive with the former partner. This moment is mentioned within the second verse when Stewart sings, “And that drive taking you to the airport// Why did you tell me you’d come back?” He is now in California, wishing that the distance would heal these wounds, but instead simple favors for his friends reminds him of the love he once had. Stewart’s heartbreak is evident in the lyrics, and the hurt behind his voice. In the first verse, he sings,” But late at night I start to remember// All the times you told me forever// Just to leave without a fight.” After all this time, Stewart is still completely shattered after his partner left him abruptly without any reason. “miss u” is an ode to best friends and midnight drives. Lyncs wrote her latest single after moving away from her hometown to pursue her dreams in Los Angeles. Once she was there, she began to miss her childhood best friend and realized they would never have the same late-night adventures again. The touching song recalls the times they shared while they were still young, with no responsibilities. In the chorus, she sings, “What fun it is to joke that we’re gonna die young// Sixteen living like we’re kings// Until seventeen when we know what it means// I’m gonna miss you.” When it was just the two of them growing up and having fun, it was easy to take these moments for granted. Now that the two of them are living their separate adult lives nearly 3,000 miles from one another, they realize what those moments meant to them. “miss u” is an enchanting track that evokes a feeling of nostalgia in the listener and makes them want to call up their best friend. - Review: "Final Girl" - Eva Rose
Eva Rose latest release is a grunge-style, horror themed track released right in time for Halloween. “Final Girl” takes the story of a previous relationship and twists it into the dark, horror movie trope of the same name. Being a final girl in a horror movie means the character is the only one that survived the killer’s terror and lived to tell the story. Rose comparing this trope to a former partner reveals the relationship as the nightmare it truly was, and the dark place she was in while with them. The second verse contains a string of lyrics that paints the toxic relationship in a very morbid, yet clear image. Rose sings, “And I swore I would mean more than the trophies you hide in your floorboard// I always believed I would make it to the summer// I guess there’s a reason the rest of them were runners.” She references the previous girls that her former partner used and disposed of, like a serial killer in a slasher film. When Rose got into this relationship, she was unaware of these “trophies” from past relationships, but now that she knows their true character, she understands why all the other girls ran. “Final Girl” instantaneously catches the attention of listeners and leaves them astonished by the absolute masterpiece Rose created. “Final Girl” mixes alternative-rock and ethereal-pop sounds to create an infectious track. Filled with dark and mysterious imagery, the song is expected to have a grunge atmosphere to it. The track begins with a single electric guitar that is soon paired with the smooth drums. As the chorus begins, Rose adds a distorted electric guitar, creating the unique multi-layered guitar effect. Rose’s heavenly vocals guide the listener through the story of a twisted romance. The end of the chorus is topped off with the soothing bass guitar that compliments the grunge style. Consisting of an upbeat melody, the production remains steady throughout the majority of the song. Then at the bridge, the song explodes with a vocal effect that highlights the climax. The entire track is full of life and imagery that fans cannot help but to fall in love with Rose all over again. Tilsen’s latest single is a whimsical track full of uplifting optimism and wholesome sweetness. “From A Distance” was created from the heartbreaking moment that Tilsen realized that she had met the right person, but at the wrong time. She loved this person wholeheartedly, but they did not reciprocate those feelings. Rather than dwelling in the sadness, Tilsen flipped the script on the regular approach to this unrequited love by looking forward to a future where they will one day be ready for her love. In the chorus, she sings, “Tell me when you’re ready// Darling I’ll be waiting// This is something you must do on your own.” Tilsen is willing to wait for this person to figure out that their heart truly desires her, so for now she is going to love them “from a distance.” When listening to this song, the audience cannot help but feel overjoyed by the positive energy that Tilsen put into the song. - Review: "Liar Liar" - Ceara Cavalieri
Ceara Cavalieri is coming for blood in her latest pop-punk single, “Liar Liar”. The song is her fiery response to discovering that her boyfriend was cheating on her. Cavalieri’s subconscious tried to warn her when she had a dream that he was cheating with a good friend of hers. She received confirmation when a friend of his showed her screenshots to prove it. After uncovering his infidelity, the rightfully angry singer turned to songwriting as a cathartic release for her emotions. The song is not only meant to be a release for Cavalieri, but for anyone who is experiencing these same feelings. Consisting of angsty lyrics such as, “Guess I should’ve known the person you were// A sorry excuse for a narcissist” and feisty lyrics like, “Liar liar, big fat liar// God you’re such an ugly crier,” Cavalieri efficiently takes her heartache and fashions it into an infectious rock anthem. “Liar Liar” is a flawless addition to not only Cavalieri’s discography, but the pop-punk genre as a whole. The song begins with an intense guitar that is reminiscent of early 2000’s pop-punk. In the background, the bass effortlessly complements the guitar, tying in the pop sounds. Within the second half of the verses, Cavalieri brings in a second guitar to harmonize with the first one. Throughout the track, the intense drums lead the song, compelling the listener to hand bang along to the beat. In the pre-chorus, the production is muted. This adds to the intensity of each chorus, including the final chorus when Cavalieri is ready to drive the song home.
