  • Review: "Both Sides" - Maura Whitman

Perhaps one of the most widely sympathized struggles in the last few years of pandemic mayhem has been mental health. It’s no surprise that many artists have begun to express their battle and share their experiences through their craft. A brilliant example of this storytelling is Maura Whitman’s 2022 EP Introspection where she intertwines sensitive and personal topics through catchy pop tunes and uplifting instrumentals. The EP’s closing track “Both Sides” explores one of the many aspects of mental health struggles: the constant battle between our own inner dialogues and beliefs. “Both Sides” begins with uplifting synth pads before Whitman opens the discussion of her struggles through beautiful vocals. When you think the chorus has hit with “all I ever wanted was for both sides of my heart to feel the same way”, the song keeps ramping the energy up in an almost unexpected fashion all the way to the climax of “both sides, caught in the middle of my mind”. It's like the song continues to defy your expectations, almost metaphorical for how Whitman has persevered through her struggles despite hardships and self doubt. The production of the song compliments the EP’s themes with the intentional choice of leaving out sampled percussion in exchange for only electronic and synthetic sounds. This gives the track an ethereal feeling, representative of how the struggle Whitman sings about happens in a place inside of us that we can’t show to the real world. Maura Whitman’s talent is no joke, and her discography of ambitious singles is only heightened by her EP. Nova Scotia’s most promising young songwriter has proven herself in her time sharing the stage with notable industry names like Neon Dreams and Loud Luxury, as well as collaborating with Grammy award winner Gordie Sampson. This Acadia University singer/songwriter definitely will be catching eyes and making waves as she continues forward with her musical career. Written By Ari Schweitzer FOLLOW Maura Whitman:

  • Review: "Touch" - Jameson Tabor

“Touch” is about love at first sight and the joyous feeling of falling in love. Jameson does a captivating job of capturing the feeling, and his song is actually from his own experience; that being one of his love at first sight for his wife- Jenna, who co-wrote the song. The song does its magic, transporting you into this scene of dancing at a party and seeing someone who you just instantly fall for. It's about putting yourself out there and being ready for love, and it's really beautiful. It’s romantic and pop-y, and with Jameson’s vocals, you are in for a treat. Touch is wonderfully produced and written by Jameson, who does an amazing job of doing so. The track itself is produced so well and the production is something you can tell was very intricate and meticulous, as the song just slots together perfectly. The lyrics are catchy and relatable, and the chorus itself has you jumping around and dancing. Though, the bridge is absolutely stunning with Jameson’s vocals. It takes almost a choral note, and the layered vocals in the background add so much to the song itself. It’s genuinely heaven in your ears. All in all, it’s a great song that will be being streamed for the ages. Jameson Tabor is a singer-songwriter and producer from Portland, now residing in LA. • Review: "Regrets" - Emei

Sometimes thinking about what we’ve been through can lead us to spiral. It’s like falling down a rabbit hole filled with the mistakes and lessons we’ve learned—and honestly, sometimes it feels like they didn’t serve us with any good life lessons. They build themselves so high in our heads, making us scrunch our faces and try to shake the memory away so it’ll never come up again. So late at night, with these regrets rushing through our minds, it can feel frustrating—which is precisely what Emei explains in her newest single, “Regrets”. In a light-hearted sarcastic list with a fun vibe, she brings us a view of what it’s like in her head, going through the chaotic thoughts she can’t change. It starts like a slow ballad, simply starting with the words, “Shouldn’t have gone to college, should have been born a millionaire” sending us on her slow descent into pesky regrets. Things we know better about now always seem like the stupidest decisions we’ve made. She slowly builds the frustration in her words, going deeper by harsher regrets like, “The way I never listened/the way I should’ve tried to/ones I tried controlling/the ones who left me hopeless”. The song dives into an alt-pop/pop-rock mood, hitting the feeling of how hopeless it is to dwell on these things we can’t change by keeping the chorus soft and slow. It’s a dump of every regret Emei has had, dumping it all out with her frustration in the form of a song. Emei is an alt-pop singer-songwriter based in Los Angeles. With this newest single, “Regrets” we’re getting the last single leading up to her upcoming debut EP that is set to come out October 26th. She’s known for her witty and charming lyrics paired with lingering melodies. Still, she might have come across your feed once or twice when she released her single, “Late to the Party”—one of the many fantastic singles the artist has written since starting to release her music on American platforms during the pandemic. • Review: "Meet Me On The Lake" - Emma Miller

“Meet Me on the Lake” by Emma Miller deals with loss, grappling with grief while learning to accept the loss without moving on entirely. It’s very aptly structured; the melody and production amplify the aforementioned themes while maintaining a dreamlike soundspace. The song is hauntingly beautiful, demonstrating Miller’s artistic prowess while retaining its artistic integrity. The song is ethereal and slightly melancholy. Miller’s graceful vocals are backed both by a vocal overlay and echoing piano notes, eliciting an atmosphere that is achingly melodic. Her poetic lyricism adds to the ambience of the song as well, demonstrated in lines such as “Meet me on the lake/Meet me in the night sky/Meet me when I’m at home lying awake.” In the song Miller deals with loss, continuing to search for and call out to someone who’s gone, mourning their loss while working to accept it. This can also be seen in the line “For it’s you I’m dreaming of/And I know you’re the one giving me the strength to move on.” Here Miller voices a very particular kind of peace wherein she is aware her loved one is tangibly lost but maintains a sense of hope that they’re still with her in some way. • Review: "Fish Tacos" - Space Nat

Space Nat recently released her latest single titled "Fish Tacos," a piece about remembrance of the good and the bad. We all experience undeniable happiness, fear, and contentment, all experiences that give us life. This song captures the powerful and raw emotion which we feel in these moments. "Fish Tacos" encapsulates the calm before the storm and translates that sort of stillness into wonderful melodies and lyrics. Most times people only remember the good or bad aspects of past situations, but Space Nat makes it a point to keep every single experience locked in your memory. Kicking off with calming piano keys, Space Nat introduces her vocals to the piece. Calm and soothing, her voice beautifully captures the pure love and pain that she wrote this song about. As she sings, she tells the story of wonderful memories of her love and how it all came crashing down. "I remember eating fish tacos talking about God," "Now that we said our goodbyes and moved away from the neighborhood," and "Could have run should have run but I chose to stay with you there." She also makes this incredible connection between their love and the sun. She sings about how they were "flying too close to the sun," eluding to their eventual demise. Her lyricism is so graceful and perfectly expresses the love and pain she endured in this situation. Space Nat makes indie-pop music that exists right where the night sky and the horizon meet. Equal parts dreamy and grounded, she sets intimate moments to soaring, emotional instrumentals a la Kacey Musgraves with a little bit of Dawes and some St. Vincent sprinkled in. A child of Los Angeles and an honorary resident of Nashville, Space Nat lives for a contradiction. She twists her classical training with a singer-songwriter’s vulnerability and her own synth-pop sensibilities. She has played staple LA venues like The Mint and The Hotel Cafe. Her latest single, “hit me up”, is a hard-hitting indie rock ballad about love and loss. Nat combines classic songwriting with indie rock elements to deliver a unique yet timeliness sound. "Till We're Fallin'" illustrates a carefree, dance-infused vibe akin to previous singles released by Carmelsoul. Alluring vocals and a catchy melody elevate the song's rhythmic beat. Lyrics of longing and intimacy compliment the dark, cryptic mood of the instrumentals. Impressive shifts in tempo carry the song through emotional flows, making the single an effortless club hit. Self written and produced, Carmelsoul's latest single layered celestial vocals over an electronic percussive bassline, consistent with the house DJ's previous releases. A mysterious intro bears lyrics of remembrance against a slow building beat before the song dives into its first bass drop. • Review: "Drowning" - Sarah Anne Fernandez

Love for yourself can sometimes be a hard thing to achieve. There are so many factors that can play into that love that we desire to feel for ourselves. The beginning of that is understanding and coming to a conclusion that there is an issue, and to take that challenge head on. This is the topic of singer Sarah Anne Fernadez's new track "Drowning." In the track, Fernandez takes her emotions head on. The track has a dreamy instrumental, featuring drums, synths, piano, and some strings. The synths sound almost aquatic, playing off of the theme of the track. The cymbal hits, remind the listener of the feeling of breaking through the surface of the water. However, at the forefront of the track, Fernandez's magical voice flows over the surface of the instrumental. Her voice is beautiful, and ridiculously powerful when that chorus hits. The lyrics delve into topics of self doubt and self love. Fernandez croons over the chorus "When will it ever be enough // I'm drowning // Under my tough exterior // Feel so inferior to all that I see." She discusses how she feels on the inside, and how things around her have caused her to feel less. She then questions whether it's herself holding her emotions back, "When will I finally be, enough for me?" That's a question Fernandez leaves to answer for herself. Sarah Anne Fernandez is a multi-talented actor and singer. "Drowning" is Fernandez's first original single of 2022. She previously released a pop-punk cover of Olivia Rodrigo's "deja vu." Fernandez has also toured the country in Wicked: The Musical. With a range that "defies gravity," Fernandez has proven herself to be a vocal powerhouse that has a bright future ahead of her.
