Love for yourself can sometimes be a hard thing to achieve. There are so many factors that can play into that love that we desire to feel for ourselves. The beginning of that is understanding and coming to a conclusion that there is an issue, and to take that challenge head on. This is the topic of singer Sarah Anne Fernadez's new track "Drowning." In the track, Fernandez takes her emotions head on. The track has a dreamy instrumental, featuring drums, synths, piano, and some strings. The synths sound almost aquatic, playing off of the theme of the track. The cymbal hits, remind the listener of the feeling of breaking through the surface of the water. However, at the forefront of the track, Fernandez's magical voice flows over the surface of the instrumental. Her voice is beautiful, and ridiculously powerful when that chorus hits. Your single “Dark” is the perfect way to show off your incredible, powerful vocals!! What is the story behind this song and what inspired you to write it? Maria: Thank you so much! I wrote "Dark" while going through tough relationships with friends and people I thought loved me. I was in a lot of pain and it motivated me to express that in a song. When did you start performing and writing your own music? Maria: I have been singing at open mics and restaurants for a couple years now but this past year is when I started professionally. I just recently performed at the Life is Beautiful Festival which was my first live performance as an independent artist. I was listening to some of your covers on your IG and they are soooooo good!! Before the chorus the vocal rhythm accentuations the lyrics being sung, with a pause after sections that accentuates their meanings. The chorus picks up the overall feel of the song bringing in more of the rock aspects of the song, especially within the instrumentals of the song. The new rhythm brings together the rock pop feel of the song through the increased use of the guitar and drum aspects. Has there ever been someone in your life that plays such a meaningful role to who you are? They mean so much to you, that even a small piece of their heart makes up your whole puzzle. In “Lose It All”, Sam Tompkins talks about how if he loses that special person, he’ll lose himself completely. If you are ever having those feelings of fear and loss, “Lose It All” is the perfect song for you. Sam Tompkin’s style throughout this track reminds me a lot of “Justin Bieber” and “Sam Smith” while adding his own unique flare. This intimate pop ballad style of this song perfectly complements the ideas and feelings that Sam is trying to carry. The lyricism that he uses, presents itself in such an endearing way, it makes me feel as though he is speaking to me directly. Pleading for this person to never leave him, for he cannot be able to bare it. The power and rasp that comes from Sam’s voice in this track faultlessly top it off making it all the more appealing. UK-based artist “Sam Tompkins” started his rise in the music industry by posting covers on YouTube further putting him into a bigger spotlight. Q: ‘Supervillain’ has such a chill vibe, I love it! What is the meaning behind the song? Holly, Ivoris, & Zhuli: Thank you! It’s basically about embracing the narrative of being painted as a villain. We were talking about how it’s unfair that women can be painted as crazy and hysterical, and how it makes them the villain of other people’s stories. This is our version of taking back the power in that situation in a cute and fun way. The whole song is also just not taking that situation seriously, making it fun and whimsical almost! Q: What did the songwriting process look like for this song? How did you guys decide to collaborate on a song together? Holly, Ivoris, & Zhuli: We actually wrote this at a writing camp that Ivoris organized in February! This was one of our collective favorites to come from the camp. I think we all knew we wanted to release it as soon as we wrote it, before we’d even written the second verse. It was inspired by the conversation we were having at the time, which was about people painting girls as crazy and branding them the villain, and how much we didn’t like that stereotype. From there, the song flowed really naturally. We all knew which bits we wanted to sing, and it was all already decided during that session. Ivoris and Holly then produced it up and then Zhuli flew down to record and finish the track. It’s been a great excuse to hang out in person as well, and we’ve all become really close because of it. Q: What is your favorite part about being musicians? Holly, Ivoris, & Zhuli: Being able to collaborate creatively with other musicians and create music is one of our favorite parts of it. Collaboration feels like connecting with someone. The idea that other people can connect and relate to our songs and experiences is also one of my favorite things, that music could create emotions and feelings or help someone get through something. Q: Who would you say are your biggest inspirations? Holly, Ivoris, & Zhuli: We all have so many different inspirations, but collectively we love Taylor Swift! We’re also heaps inspired by icons like Charli XCX, Phoebe Bridgers, Benee, Doja Cat, Cxloe, Telenova! Q: Do you have any hobbies outside of music? Holly: I love doing anything that’s creative– I love reading poetry and painting. I also love going op shopping and grabbing coffee with friends at the beach or something outdoors like that! Ivoris: I love the process of creating things - like doing watercolor paintings, or baking! I also frequently go to the beach and on forest walks. Like Zhuli, I binge watch shows in my spare time but it’s always the same shows on repeat: Gilmore Girls, Hannah Montana and The Office. Zhuli: Music honestly takes up most of my time - when I’m not writing and releasing music, I’m usually playing at weddings and events. In my spare time i like to binge watch TV shows. Recently I’ve been watching Bobs Burgers, Rings of Power, and the Boys. Ask me next week and I’ll have three different shows to tell you about. I also love second hand shopping so before gigs on the weekends I’m usually browsing through markets! Q: What is some of the best advice you have received? Holly: The best advice I have been given is that you’re never too old or young for something. I think sometimes I have felt intimidated at times in this industry and a lot of that has been to do with feeling young and maybe not as wise as other people in the room. I’ve been trying to get better at knowing who I am as a musician and valuing that over age. Everyone has something to bring to the table! I think that’s really important to remember when you're finding your way in an industry where progress and success isn't linear. Ivoris: I once heard Brooke Fraser say that “good music will find ears that want to hear it”, and that’s stuck with me ever since. It reminds me that music is subjective and that it’s okay if your music doesn’t resonate with someone, because it will find the ears it was meant for. This is a song you would hear playing in a club and quickly pull up the Shazam app on your phone, desperately hoping the chattering around you doesn't disrupt the app too much so you can find this song. After leaving someone you were involved with, you realize that it is time for self-discovery and independence instead of searching for new love.
