It’s no wonder that we crave physical affection, for it releases good chemicals in our brains that reduce stress. Everyone knows how nerve wracking having a crush can be. You try to get them to notice you and wonder if they have those same feelings. When your efforts pay off, it is exciting to get a simple touch or something more. The lead up is thrilling. It’s like inching up the first big hill on a rollercoaster. Your heart beats fast out of pure excitement. Once it happens, you obviously want more. GAELN knows this and he writes about all these emotions in his fun and fast-paced new single, “Beat Slow.” The instrumentation of “Beat Slow” perfectly matched the title. The song is about fast-paced love. After all, the main line in the chorus is “can’t tell these hearts to beat slow.” Therefore, it is only fitting that the music is upbeat as well. The instrumentation consists of a jazzy electric guitar, drums, and background vocals. It sounds thrilling, just as it would if your heart was beating fast. The lyrics touch on how addicting physical affection is with lines, such as “I want more” and “pure sweet bliss.” My favorite part was the second verse when affection is compared to a drug, a good kind. The most telling line here is, “no crash or backlash or that sickly feeling.” Near the end of the song, the bridge tells of two warring feelings: wanting to rush or savor the moment. Pink Navel)" is a funky, new-wave house song about running on low battery. "vertigo" is the interlude that ends the light pop-tones and transcends us into the darkness for the second half of the album. During his own experience of vertigo, he had never felt so dizzy or nauseas, and this is the first time he's sharing that frightening story with the world. He's grateful the situation wasn't worse, and it is a persistent reminder of how important it is to take care of himself. Working hard and chasing after your dreams is admirable, but nothing is more essential than tending to your physical and mental health needs. After his family came to the rescue, he remembered what it felt like to be taken care of again, but that care also has to come from within. "Sleep When I'm Dead" (ft. If you have at any point in your life struggled with mental illness, you know how difficult it can be to handle at times. This song had so many elements to it that drew me in deeper and deeper. As always, I want to talk about the instrumentals first. The song opens with the steady sound of the piano, quietly accompanying Leire’s stunning voice. It’s later joined by the drums. It’s so simple, yet so perfect for the lyrics. Then, there’s Leire’s voice, which I can only describe as hauntingly beautiful. She goes in and out of using her head and chest voice as she sings, but as she belts out, her throat lets out these tiny rasps. Honestly, it’s what really sold the song for me. Those rasps are a result of the raw emotion in her voice. Leire is a London-based singer and songwriter rising in the ranks as an artist. At the start of her career, Leire busked in the streets of Leicester Square. Flash forward to now, Leire is gaining loads of attention from TikTok and Spotify. She also has shared the stage with artists such as Tom Walker, Rag’n’Bone Man, and Gang of Youths. And currently, Leire is collaborating with the song-writing competition, Eurovision! If you don't know who Maisie Peters is, you should. I desperately wanted to see this show ever since I listened to her latest album, "The Good Witch" (which I reviewed right here). Unfortunately, the closest show to me was over 3 hours away in Columbus, Ohio and was sold out for months. Then, the luckiest, craziest thing happened to me. I just happened to check on Ticketmaster the day before the show, and there were tickets available! So, of course, I bought them; and just like that I was going to go see Maisie Peters within the next 24 hours. The day of the show, me and my fiancé woke up early and drove almost 4 hours from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to The Bluestone in Columbus, Ohio. The Bluestone is a gothic style church that was converted into an event venue; and lets just say, it matched the aesthetic of "The Good Witch" perfectly. When we first got there, we sat in the car for a while and across the lot was Maisie's 12 bed tour bus. When we were the only ones left in the lot, to our shock and surprise, we actually saw Maisie leaving the bus to walk into the venue; I could've totally said hi but honestly I didn't know if she knew we were there and I didn't want to scare her. We waited outside for about another 4 hours to make sure we could get close since the tickets were general admission. 1,000 people crammed into the venue; and I won't like, we were packed like sardines! I swear I've never sweat so much in my entire life, but it was worth it. If you love Taylor Swift, you'll love Maisie Peters and it's clear that the fanbases collide. While we were waiting for the show to begin, there were three Taylor Swift songs that had played over the speakers. Have you ever heard a room of 1,000 people all collectively do Karaoke together? Well I did, and it was such a cool experience. The crowd singing "Anti Hero" by Taylor Swift. The show started with Maisie's opener for her North America leg of the tour, Grace Enger. It was just Grace and her guitar on that stage, but she made it her own. Like Maisie, Grace is also a lyric-driven artist who can use her words to make you feel all sorts of emotions. When you can fill an entire room with just your voice and an acoustic guitar, that means your talent level is out of this world. GOOD WITCH in big, white and bold letters filled the background of the stage. The song, "The Good Witch" began to play as Maisie's band walked out onto the stage. Still me here, do you think I forgot about you? - which are the first words in the song are sung with Maisie out of sight, and the crowd goes absolutely wild. The song continues until Maisie sings "I guess when it kicks in" and she appeared on the stage. It was the perfect opening for this show. However, if you did want to hear "Want You Back" and a few other fan favorites, Maisie plays an acoustic set for VIPs before each show where she does play those songs. I had a pretty awesome view and had so much eye-contact with Maisie throughout the show. I think she made it her mission to look into every single persons eyes as the night went on and it made me feel really connected to her. She is an absolute firecracker on stage and gave this performance her all. A lot of her songs are also crowd-interactive which is something else I've never experienced before until now, where there's moments in the song where you can sing back to Maisie like you're responding to her. Like in the songs "Watch" and "You're Just a Boy (and I'm Kinda the Man) which you can see the videos for below. "Run" "BSC" Maisie is a superstar, and she deserves SO MUCH more recognition; not only for incredible music, but for her ability to put on an A-Grade concert and her kind-hearted personality. This is a night that I will never forget. Especially when she sang my all-time favorite song, "There It Goes" and at the end of the song she told everyone to think of someone or something that you want out of your life and sing with her "there it goes..." several times in a row. It was such an emotional and spiritual experience in that moment. "There It Goes" After Maisie sang "Cate's Brother", she and her band left the stage to make it seem like the show was over. For over the course of a minute (or maybe even longer) the crowd cheered and began to chant Maisie's name. Maisie and her band returned to the stage for two more songs. The first one being, "The History of Man" which if you haven't heard yet and you want a good cry, you should check it out. It was such a beautiful and highly emotional performance that it needed to be mentioned. If you love heartfelt lyrics and nostalgic soundscapes, you'll absolutely love Maisie Peters. She has the songwriting abilities of Taylor Swift and the instrumental craftmanship of Ed Sheeran. There is no set-in-stone genre to place this album in; I feel it has mixtures of mainstream-pop, 80's synth-pop, folk and singer-songwriter. The album is about growing up, falling in love, getting your heart broken, experiencing life in your early twenties and following your dreams. So if you're up to the emotional rollercoaster ride that is "The Good Witch", let's start listening! Track #1 - The Good Witch The album begins with the title track, "The Good Witch", which acts as an introduction to the rest of the album. Maisie describes where she was in her life while she was writing this album within this track. She was 22, recording at Kings Cross and still learning her way through life. "The Good Witch" is her coming of age story; she has fallen in love, she has gotten her heartbroken; she has discovered her dreams and has grown, but is still the girl who doesn't like to play the black keys on the piano. The whole last minute of this song consists of cenematic music intertwined with audio from videos and voice recordings within Maisie's adventures while writing this album. Track #2 - Coming of Age As I mentioned before, this album is Maisie's "Coming of Age" album where she begins to understand herself as a person. In our 20's, we come to a lot of realizations about ourselves. Sometimes we look back on the past and think, "why did I do that? I would never do something like that now". Track 2, "Coming of Age" describes this scenario, particularly when it comes to relationships. Maisie finds herself wondering why it took her so long to realize that the problem was never her, but rather the person she was with at the time. Track #3 - Watch "Watch" was the first song Maisie wrote for "The Good Witch". This particular song leans more towards an early 2000's pop punk vibe which is a sound that Maisie has touched base with before in her incredible song, "Cate's Brother" which was written around the same time as this song and released as a single last year, but didn't make it on this album. "Watch" is about having an ex that moves on easily while you just sit and watch them be happy but you can't help but still have feelings. Track #4 - Body Better "Body Better" is the lead single for this album, and one of my favorites. Filled with reverb, synths, guitar and a 80's beat, it impossible for me to sit still while listening to this song. I'm up dancing around and singing along like I'm performing in front of a crowd of 50,000 people. The lyrics touch on the struggles and thoughts that come with insecurity. These are the anxious questions that run through your head when someone you loved leaves you for another girl. You start to wonder what is wrong with you and why you weren't good enough for them, though the truth is they weren't good enough for you. Track #5 - Want You Back "Want You Back" is lyrically one of the best songs on this album. It talks of wanting back an ex even though they've broken your heart. A theme within a lot of the breakup songs Maisie writes is knowing that the person she dated was bad for her, but still has trouble letting go of them. It's hard to fall out of love with someone, even if they did you dirty in the worst possible ways. Described as her saddest and most personal song, "Want You Back" is the All Too Well of "The Good Witch". If you love a song that feels like a listening to a story and makes you cry, this is for you. Track #6 - The Band and I Maisie describes "The Band and I" as a song that gives the feeling of making music a sound. She wrote this song about her experiences while touring with Ed Sheeran in Europe as well as her own tour in North America on a twelve-bed bus, gaining close relationships with her band members and the euphoric feeling of performing live in front of a crowd. She also says it's a song for the fans, and how "if we're living the dream, then I hope we never wake up." Track #7 - You're Just a Boy (and I'm Kind of the Man) As a fan of country music and female legends like Shania Twain and Dolly Parton, Maisie wanted to make a fun song that is a tribute to her favorite strong-headed country artists. This song is definitely a female empowerment song that has hints of 90s country-pop in it's instrumentation. "You're the man" is used as an expression when someone does something that is worth praising. In this song, Maisie refers to herself as "the man" and says she's on a one way trip to take over the world, but the person she is in love with is just a boy; implying that he's too immature to be a fit for her. Track #8 - Lost the Breakup "Lost the Breakup" is the second single that released before this album. Starting with just a TikTok that featured a snippet of this song, "Lost The Breakup" went viral before the full song was even released. It's an incredibly catchy and nostalgic pop song that brings heartbroken hopeless romantics confidence to pick themselves up and move on from the past. One day, that person you used to love won't be a thought in your mind anymore. You'll be living your best life while they sit and wonder why they let you go. Track #9 - Wendy "Wendy" uses the classic fairytale story of "Peter Pan" and uses it to help describe a relationship that never positively progresses. Maisie sings, "behind every lost boy, there's always a Wendy". In society, if a man is loses himself, his girl is expected to be the one to put him back on the right path. "But What About Wendy?", Maisie asks as she explains that you could either be stuck in Neverland where nothing ever grows or changes, or you can make the hard decision to take your own path in life without your "lost boy". Track #10 - Run "Run" is soon going to serve as the fourth single of this album, with a music video releasing on June 30th. This song has a very different vibe than the other songs on this album. It's very percussion forward and is inspired by 90's pop similar to Britney Spears and Gwen Stefani. "Run" is about all the red flags that you should avoid when talking to a guy, like them telling you they love you after only knowing you for a couple days kind of red flags. Maisie warns you by giving examples of her own personal experiences. Track #11 - Two Weeks Ago "Two Weeks Ago" is a sad girl piano ballad that embodies the same kind of sadness as "Want You Back". It's a soft song but the emotion builds throughout and it just might bring a tear to your eye. It's about reminiscing on a moment in time where everything was perfect, but it brings you sadness knowing you can never go back and relive it again. It's crazy how much life can change in such a short amount of time. Track #12 - BSC Short for "Bat Shit Crazy", this is probably the most unhinged song on this album. There's a constant flow of lyrics and yelling in the background during the chorus. This song is basically a big "F-U" to anyone who has ever broken Maisie's heart. You thought she was sweet and fine with you hurting her? It may seem like it on the outside, but in this song she admits to be being "mother-fucking bat shit crazy". If you don't want all the bad things you've done to come out in lyrics within Maisie's very personal songs, then don't be a bad person. Track #13 - Therapy The perfect song after listening to "BSC" is "Therapy". This song is also one of my personal favorites on this album. The soundscape just completely takes over your body; the groove and melody will captivate you and it's definitely a song I've had on repeat. "Therapy" describes loving someone who drives you so crazy to the point that you have to go to therapy for help. Track #14 - There It Goes "There It Goes" has the best chorus on this album in my opinion. It's just so incredibly crafted in a way that you can feel the music grooving within yourself. The bass line is the star of the show as the melody and rhythm take you through a euphoric journey. Although this song is also about a breakup, it sounds like a sense of relief and finding peace within yourself when you can finally let go of all the things that happened in the past. It's a great song to put an end to the era that is "The Good Witch". Track #15 - History of Man We're finally here with the closing song, "History of Man". Just like how the album started with "The Good Witch", this song pulls you through an emotional cenematic experience, like it's the song they're playing during the credits at the end of a movie, if the movie was the stories we're experiencing throughout this album. This song is simple, yet beautiful as Maisie uses references to historical places and mentions stereotypical, clueless mannerisms that men are known for when they're unknowingly breaking their lovers heart. "I tried to rewrite it but I can't, it's the history, the history of man". I hope you enjoyed listening to "The Good Witch" with me, because I am absolutely in love with this album. Maisie has such a way with words. She's able to write lyrical stories that are genuine and raw, and it makes you feel like the songs are meant for you. Her voice is so soft and sweet that it is calming to listen to her sing. She has diversity in her style and sound so anyone can find a song they like and relate to. I believe Maisie Peters is one of the most underrated artists of our generation and she deserves to be heard. "The Good Witch" will easily become one of my favorite albums to be released this year, if not one of my favorite albums of all time. Fox Revett's newest single, "That Bad," is a synth-pop ballad reflecting on a toxic relationship. Lyrically, the track explores the cyclical nature of these romances. Revett writes about being unable to let go of someone despite knowing it's unhealthy. In the chorus, they sing, "Pressure point's starting to show / I'll forget them in a day or so / Tell me what you did to make it that bad." The single accuanates Revett's capabilities as a songwriter. It is an honest and realistic portrayal of how these relationships manifest. The constant breaking-up-and-getting-back-togethers, the unfulfilled promises, and the hopes that it will be different this time, only to stay the same, are all depicted. They delve deep into the complicated feelings and messy situations that come with a relationship of this nature, making "That Bad," a cathartic listen for anyone who has ever experienced something similar. Revett recalls writing the track while running, which, when listened to, makes complete sense. "That Bad" is a pumping, synth-heavy tune with a booming beat--it is perfect workout music. The production and structure of the song are immaculate. Revett begins by crooning over a quiet instrumental, gradually adding faster and faster drums until the driving, high-tempo chorus kicks in. Everything works together to build momentum and make the refrain soar. The song sounds massive. Then the bridge takes it up an even bigger notch, with a brief beat switch, autotuned EDM vocal snippets, and an 80s metal-inspired drum solo. Revett keeps the listener engaged with these various experimental details. Yet the track still feels cohesive because every decision emphasizes the narrative written about. The emotions of the relationship are immense, so naturally, the instrumental is as well. "That Bad" is an ambitious single--with a fun, lively sound, and a strong emotional core. Fox Revett is a singer, songwriter, and producer from Toronto. A self-described "choir boy gone rogue," Revett combines his background in classical and a love of the hyperpop genre with his music. “Nothing Left To Lose” is about all that has been lost. It’s Julia Alexa’s latest release and it is a heart wrenching piece filled with ingenious lyricism breaking down the hypocrisy in losing everything except what you want to most. “If I fell in love with my sadness would it leave me too?” she asks, she is pleading to rid herself of what burdens her and is in the process only burdening herself with more loss. The concept of losing people after opening up to them is a heavy one here, but the truth of it is, those who leave after hearing those feelings don’t take them as they go. She wishes to give her heart and her troubles to others and finds again and again that those feelings are the only thing that stay. The song begins with a melancholic piano and a distant echo in which Julia whispers on repeat, “you don’t have to hate me, I already do”. Needless to say, it sets the tone for the particularly depressive song. When her voice becomes louder, the music becomes more modern. Her theme of vulnerability is reflected when, again, her whisper joins the background music. The lyrics feel like a diary entry, the way she responds to herself in this echo and states her understanding of her pain. The pace increases as she falls into these words more and more until finally she states “I rip out my own heart till there’s nothing left to lose”, and on that “lose”, the music smooths over and it’s a purely emotive chorus where she seems to want nothing left. The song leaves off on another rendition of this. Julia Alexa has been making music for a long time, she grew up playing the piano and singing. She began investing in her abilities, though, at just thirteen when she started taking singing lessons, which were evidently a worthwhile pursuit. She started to make her work public in 2019, first by posting it to YouTube. It took only a year or so before she was making a name for herself in her genre and collaborating with other artists. Now, she’s 21 and holds over 230k listeners as well as upwards of 40 million streams on her Spotify. " Faulty Wiring " by Sam Short delves into the challenges of grappling with mental illness, as she seeks solace in a combination of medication and therapy to aid her journey toward healing. However, the medications and therapy don’t seem to help as expected, due to the medicine not working, and her therapist deciding to give up and part ways with her. This leaves Sam helpless and questioning the point in living if she feels like she needs assistance in “fixing” herself, when the assistance isn’t working. This new song, which is included in her latest EP “ Faulty Wiring ,” is an extremely personal one, but one that will reach those that can relate to her situation and know that they’re not alone. At the start of the song, Sam notifies her doctor that the medication she’s been using hasn't led to any improvement. Instead, it's keeping her in the same stagnant state. She calls this an “ error ” - a glitch within her system (“ Oh doctor, doctor, there's an error in my system. Medication couldn't fix it like you thought ”). This “ error ” then led her to have a hard time understanding the point of living if both of her forms of treatment were being rejected (“ Is it really living if I’m just surviving? ”). Feeling helpless, struggling to “fix herself” and continue without working meds or a therapist, she asks the doctor: “ Why do I bother when my therapist just left me? Said I’m too far gone to help, so what you got? ” The last line of the song (“ Oh, I’ve just got faulty wiring ”) shows Sam coming to the realization that there wasn’t anything that she needed to fix about herself all along. Rather, she just needed to accept the fact that she was just wired differently. Sam Short is an indie/pop singer-songwriter from Oregon, but based in Los Angeles, California. In 2022, she made her debut as an artist with her single “ Already Mine ” that went viral on Tiktok, and became an empowerment anthem. Since then, she has released the singles “ Taste It ,” “ Naked ,” and her EP “ Faulty Wiring ” which just released on August 18th. It is nearly impossible to be in a relationship without comparing yourself to your partner’s ex. Emphasizing where he sleeps at night after listing two things that his ex has over her feels just like Katie is having a discussion with her listeners - two girls just debriefing the situation. She lets her audience into her head and gains their trust, as well as their sympathy. She continues on in the second verse to say “If you were lyin', I would never know / You could be lyin' on her couch again”. Her trust is strong, at first she wasn’t even thinking that the ex could be an option. But again the thoughts seem to creep their way in. What if he's with her right now? What if he’s lying to me? She begs for an answer. The outro of the song repeats “And it's all that I think about / And you're all that I want now / But if you wanna try, I will / Do you feel it still?” She gives herself to this new relationship. It's all that she wants and thinks about, but all that she can do is worry about how he feels about the past. What if he still loves her? She can’t get the thought out of her head. Katie Gregson-Macleod is a singer-songwriter from the Scottish Highlands. She has over 760k monthly Spotify listeners, and is taking the world of songwriting by storm. She has been releasing music since 2020, but truly blew up in 2022 with the release of her song “complex”. This track was first discovered on TikTok, and simply skyrocketed Katie’s career.
