  • Review: "Baby Come Back" - Thomasina

Photo credit: Tristian Parks “Baby Come Back”, Thomasina’s latest release, is a true “instant classic”. Between the catchy lyrics and the unforgettably melodic beat it only gets better with each listen. Thomasina expresses a consistent internal debate on old romance and its value. She undeniably misses the subject she sings to, but recognizes the harm they have done to her and will likely do again if she lets them back into her life. Their memory burns in her mind, but as she says “knew you’d burn me down one night” she creates the sense that she would be ablaze regardless. The sentiment she ponders throughout “Baby Come Back” is whether it is better to be in pain with or without them. And as the title alludes to, she decides with. At its core, this is a song for anyone who misses anyone. It’s a general subject, and yet, Thomasina manages to make it feel personal and intimate. The song begins with a sort of mechanical sound backed by a static version of the music, then a click, before the song picks up. The sounds of tangible music here, a record or cd player for example, are small but incredibly reflective of Thomasina’s message. This is something she holds on to, something she’s said, or heard, a million times and yet it plays again. She’s restless, as expressed by what we hear next. “Dreams of you are the reason I wake up, I try to fall back to sleep but I’m stuck” her voice is crisp and introduces the listener to the high quality found in the remainder of the song. The lyrics that follow are poetically rhythmic, following a structure that is in sync with the beat. It is almost asking for participation, impossible to resist singing along with after one listen, but this is only her introduction. It is her chorus, in which Thomasina’s euphonious, perfect, voice repeats again and again “baby come back” which is truly captivating. After the first chorus, she is lost in her thoughts of her subject. Old photos, their smile, their mind. Though it is clear they hurt her, she offers them nothing but compliments. The song seems to end with the same plea, “baby come back to me”, but as the music disappears the listener can hear one last whisper of “come back”. It is details such as this that make “Baby Come Back” such an endearing and dissectible song, Thomasina’s creative ability in production and songwriting is displayed beautifully in every piece of it. Thomasina began making music at only ten years old and has been expanding on her prodigal talent ever since. Following every aspect of the songwriting process, she studied audio production at Northern Vermont University, working towards her ability to be a self-sufficient creator. In 2018, she released her first single “You Don’t Deserve This”, opening her up to her current style of pop music. This and her other singles have been largely reflective of her personal experience and emotions. But “Baby Come Back”, which she began producing two years ago, is different. In this single, she explores her storytelling ability by creating a character to narrate the song and focusing it around a convincing, but actually fabricated, breakup. With such new approaches I’ll definitely be coming back to see what else Thomasina has in store for us. Written By Hailey Schap FOLLOW THOMASINA:

  • Interview: "Be The One" - Kevin Silvester, JVCQUI

Congratulations on the release of your new single "Be The One"! I am so beyond impressed! What is the story behind this track? And can you take us through the production of it? Kevin: Thank you so much for the kind words, Sarah! The song is a story about a tarnished and adulterous relationship. It takes us through the multi-dimensional emotions and insecurities surrounding the situation. The lyrics outline some of the bizarre places your mind can go to during such adversity. Initially, I approached the song as a guitar ballad, but the delivery of the song's meaning would be too superficial. I wanted the production to evoke a sense of frustration, desperation, as well as recklessness - not just slow pondering. I think I ultimately achieved that by mixing different genres that had various roles in conveying the meaning of the lyrics. You can hear punk-rock and dance-pop influences, as well as elements from guitar-ballad, classical music and early Charli XCX. What inspired you to make the transition from playing classical music on the piano and cello to the production side in the electronic genre? Kevin: While studying classical music at a young age, I experienced what felt like an extensive amount of competitiveness and elitism - which is actually embedded into the history of classical music at its core. I had always wondered what the world outside of classical music was like, where you can just freely express yourself for the sake of creating art and not conformed to any societal standards. I started listening to electronic music during my teenage years, and I felt like the music was highly expressive in its own way. Being able to design your own instrument with a unique timbre and manipulating samples into something that's never been heard before - these things were all inaccessible in classical music. What did you find was the hardest part of breaking into the music industry? Kevin: Being an independent artist continues to be a challenge. There are many intricate things to know, and I had to learn many the hard way. I've done everything alone for years and learnt not to depend on others. It'll be nice to eventually get some help from a major label. I mean, if Beyoncé would take me under her queen bee wings, I wouldn't complain. How did your collab with JVCQUI come along? The two of you working together was a perfect match! Kevin: We had been friends for a while and had been talking about collaborating on a song together. I feel like we give off pure crackhead energy when we're together. Be The One was conceived when we put that energy into a song. Around the time, we had both been heartbroken, coincidentally, by boys both named Christian. We bonded over that and put some of our experiences in the lyrics. Thank you, Christians, for your service. The hook line, "Is it selfish of me if I just wanna be the one?" popped into my head one day, and I thought it was an interesting question that carried a heavy sentiment. When I brought it into the studio with JVCQUI and our close friend Seetali Mack, all the melodies and lyrics just flowed out of us so naturally. We wrote so much during that session; we were just having fun and using our imagination. More than half of what we wrote ended up being cut out - including a queer, ménage à trois narrative and a bloodshed confrontation at the end. We joke that we could make a 10-minute version of this song as Taylor Swift did with All Too Well. If you could go on tour with any artist, who would you pick and why? Kevin: My dream is to open for Krewella. They were (and continue to be) my musical heroes growing up and rescued me from classical music. Although if I met them in person, I would probably respectfully pass out. Opening for David Bowie would also be cute, but there are certain limitations. What can we expect from you next? After listening to some of the work you put out so far, I'm dying to see what's coming in the future! Kevin: Please don't die, Sarah. I'm putting out my album this year, which I've worked really hard on. It'll touch on themes surrounding escapism and grief, as well as some subject matters that I've never talked about in my songs before. Also, more content, more music videos, and more shows! • Review: "Constant Static Noise" - Elektric Animals

Do you deal with feeling overwhelmed by the amount of things you have to be responsible for on a daily basis? In ”Constant Static Noise” by Elektric Animals, the vocalist sings about feeling as though there are surrounded by chaos and that everything around them feels like a sensory overload. The singer specifies that a partner is the reason for the constant buzzing in their head, however, he is so devoted to this person, that he welcomes the distraction. The angsty lyrics and the singer's moody tone are kept light with the fun melody and upbeat instrumental that brings a refreshing vibe to the track. Altogether, this single has a wicked sound that has revived 90s alternative grunge. The song begins slightly distorted as though you are listening to it from another room until you are transported into the full sound. The single has a funky synth and bass that complements the melancholic lyrics of the verse. The bridge is where the vocalist and guitarist shine with an intense and impactful few chords as well as the emphasis on the singer's vocals. In the final chorus, the singer is joined by harmonized layered vocals which ends the single on a phenomenal note. Overall, you need to add this track to your next playlist because it is a catchy song that you will be stuck in your head and playing on repeat. Elektric Animals is a Denver-based band that consists of keyboardist Will Hubert, bassist Jerrid Vans, drummer Eric Everhart, guitarist Oscar Jara, and vocalist Nick Sanders. The members began making waves in early 2018 for their 90s post-grunge sound, releasing their first single titled, “Obsessive”. Since their debut, the band has released a slew of singles and one EP named “Chanels”, which aligns with the group's cool alternative vibe. Although Elektric Animals has not yet released an album, they have amassed over 2,000 monthly listeners on Spotify and have close to 100,000 streams on one of their most popular singles, “Come Clean”. • Review: "Greed" - Auti

Auti’s “Greed” unapologetically calls out the upper-echelon society for their money hungry ways. Some people will do anything to look like they are of the wealthiest elite, and they’ll use every last penny to persuade a false persona of prosperity. It’s like spending thousands of dollars to keep a manicured lawn while the paint is chipping in your kitchen. As long as the people who pass your house think you’re well-to-do, it’s easy to ignore the crumbling walls inside. There’s that age-old-saying, “money talks, wealth whispers,” and that is the basis of frustration in Auti’s new hit song. People get a little change in their pockets, and think they immediately have to show for it, with something flashy and opulent nonetheless. In a world full of instant fame and overnight success, it’s perplexing to think how little of that money goes to a good cause. Along with catchy lyrics and lively music, Auti touches on such an important topic of using fame and fortune to better mankind. You can’t help but get up and get loud from the moment “Greed” begins. The song is reminiscent of a movie when people have finally had enough, and they decide to fight for themselves because no one else is going to, and we’re left with nothing but anarchy and chaos, but that’s when people finally get the message and society begins to change. Auti is determined to use her platform for good. She uses her music as a vehicle for change and a positive impact for her audience and the world. She proudly proclaims that she won’t let greed define her. It’s refreshing to see an artist call out society, and with this captivating, dynamic song, people are sure to not only hear her, but truly listen and make a change. Auti is an up-and-coming singer/songwriter who has a deep passion for speaking about mental health and changing the narrative. She gives people a safe space within her music, and she is using her platform to make a stand and influence the world. Auti is a nationwide Mental Health Ambassador, and she draws on personal struggles and past experiences to inspire her music, and she wants to engrain a message of hope in her audience. She is the embodiment of resilience, and in the face of adversity, she wants her listeners to know they are not alone, and they can endure anything. Auti first rose to stardom when her cover of “Shallow” from A Star Is Born went viral. She has accumulated many fellow change-hungry fans across her social media and streaming platforms, and she continues to release new music with a fresh outlook and diverse instrumentation. Auti’s raw talent, refreshing vulnerability, and enthusiasm for the underdog makes her the voice of her generation, and we feel greedy to keep her all to ourselves. • Review: "cool like frozen yogurt" - ÊMIA

Breakups are not easy. Especially if you still have a lot of love for the person you're losing. Learning to accept and forgive is the best option regardless of what the outcome was. It’ll be easier to move on that way instead of holding a grudge. You’ll be the only one hurting. Having that acceptance is part of growing. ÊMIA’s song, “cool like frozen yogurt” is about accepting an apology from an old love. She describes this song as her “olive branch to her ex.” People cope differently after separating but in this case, there’s a light-hearted spin on it which is sometimes needed. ÊMIA starts “cool like frozen yogurt” with an appealing hook that draws the listener in. You’re sat there wondering why this song has such a catchy vibe with it being a breakup anthem. That’s what makes it unique and different. She has a pleasant voice that ties in with the upbeat tempo which creates a harmonious melody. Her high-spirited tone makes a heavy situation into something less serious. The effect ÊMIA has on the listener with her vocals and music is to make them feel content through her lyrics. Throughout the track to the end, the lines, “We’re cool like frozen yogurt / bitter sweetness on the side” are sung a few times which is the best way ÊMIA describes the relationship after forgiveness and becoming civil with each other. ÊMIA is a singer, songwriter, and producer based in Brooklyn. She’s been featured in Logitech’s for Creators Campaign and appeared in Netflix’s Ronny Chieng Takes Chinatown. Some of her inspirations are Taylor Swift and Avril Lavigne which she looks up to in the industry. Electronic music, R&B, film scores, and musical theatre are some of her music influences. She self-wrote and self-produced her debut EP, “Little Secret” and has been featured on countless Spotify playlists and on Starbucks’ playlist, “Coffeehouse Pop.” She’s landed placements on New Music Friday Belgium, Spain, and Norway working as a songwriter and vocalists for producers such as DUUMU, Imfinenow, and SVDKO. Her latest EP, “VIDEO CALL:AM” was released back in September with five singles; two of the songs, “fake scenarios” and “heard it on the internet” were featured on Spotify’s Fresh Finds playlist. She’s now working on a full-length album that’s anticipated and is surely an artist worth following! Written By Lyndsey Cheng FOLLOW ÊMIA:

  • Review: "With You" (feat. Morgin Madison) - LINNEY

It’s common to feel alone in the world. Sometimes, this lonely feeling can lead to even more negative and destructive thoughts. We have to learn how to keep that mindset away even though it can be hard. LINNEY, Morgin Madison and Luxtides wrote the song, “With You” to remind us that we’re not on our own; we have our friends, family, and people who support us. There are still so many things we need to achieve in life. Leaving mistakes and regrets in the past will help us move forward and see the brighter side of things. If you ever feel unmotivated or lost, play this song to feel lifted and to remember that there are people out there rooting for you. The song starts off with a space ambience and ad lib that immediately will catch the listener’s attention. The track has an EDM tempo that carries throughout which makes you want to jump to the music. The style of this music reminds me of a Tove Lo or Ellie Goulding song which LINNEY mentions both artists as influences; it’s a mix of electropop and dance pop. The tone creates motivation for people who feel left out in the world to show them that they’re not alone. Although with its upbeat rhythm, the lyrics are still showcased to get the important message across. LINNEY’s vocal style fits in this EDM tune which is captivating to the ears. The instrumental at the end has the optimistic and jumpy sound which then ends in its space ambience. LINNEY is a singer/songwriter based in LA. She has collaborated with electronic producers Gareth Emery, Tritonal, Ummet Ozcan, and ARMNHMR. She is John Lennon’s Songwriting Contest winner; her music has been heard on New Music Friday, mint, Dance Rising, and many more. She’s been on Top 10 on the Apple Music Charts in Finland, Ireland, The Netherlands, Thailand, New Zealand and has been featured on TV shows like Riverdale and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Morgin Madison describes his music as a “unique style of atmospheric dance music ranging from chilled house beats to dramatic, hard-hitting set pieces.” Mau5trap signed Madison after hearing a couple demos and wanted to support him. Madison joined LINNEY to work on the song after he invited her to share the stage with him, opening for Deadmau5 on the We Are Friends Tour at Red Rocks, CO in November. • Review "Inside Joke" - The Kantors

The Kantors have released their second enchanting single, Inside Joke. Kristin and Dan Kantor make up the indie duo, alongside other friends. The song Inside Joke takes you on a journey and allows you to sit and think for a moment. It lulls you in and cuts deep when you realize what the lyrics and warning you with. This song is written from a personal experience and allows you to reflect on experiences you have had in your own life. As you listen you feel the sense of confusion switch to anger, realizing you are in a bad situation and that the joke is not funny anymore. This can be interpreted as the words of a survivor who is strong. This indie rock song prepares you to fight the common injustices that plague the world today. Inside Joke has a euphoric melody that strums softly and lures you in. Immersing you into the song like you are watching a key scene in a dramatic movie. The way that the sound moves is fluid and allows you to begin to float, until you are struck with the deep lyrics. Inside Joke makes you feel frustration, arming you and taking you though battle. There is a quick transition from a solo to more of an angry echoed voice. This song picks at the chorus, adding several other instruments then fades back to a mellow tune. The contrast between the anger with more rock undertones against the violin and the soft melodic intro creates for a great listen and immersive experience overall. The Kantors are a family band, composed of Kristin and Dan Kantor and their closests friends; Nate Sun, Jamie Redwood, Sam Adams and Rachel Clark. The talented crew is based in Chicago, and have a strong focus on being close knit. The indie folk-rock group now has two songs streaming everywhere; Linda and Inside Joke. With these powerful songs, the group already has a few shows this year on the forecast, and hopefully more soon. In the end The Kantors create meaningful music about deeply personal messages and I cannot wait to hear more of them. Written By Cate Schnoebelen FOLLOW THE KANTORS:

  • Review: "My Friends Are Sober" - James Julian Villa

Life hands us endless reminders of our own aging. Baby shower invitations might as well be harbingers of youth's fossilization. On "My Friends Are Sober," James Julian Villa has this darkly humorous realization through the well being of his peers. Everyone's too busy getting their act together to have fun! The sharp wit of Villa's lyricism is matched impeccably with the colorful production. There's a vivid personality imbued in the deeply-textured instrumental: playful record scratches, dirty bass, and a bright drumbeat. The reality of "My Friends Are Sober" is melancholic beneath the humorous surface, and the production seamlessly integrates that as well. The lofi countermelodies from acoustic guitars give the affect something of a wry edge—like a crooked, toothy grin. Listen closely, however, and they leave you with a distinct sadness. We can laugh about getting old, but the longing for stability is no joke. Much of Villa's lyricism coils between cleverly comical and disarmingly sobering (no pun intended). "Who needs friends when you've got heinekens / and three more years to spend until the kids start calling you old," he sings with either a smirk or a cringe. As everyone around him seems to be straightening up and moving on from the preoccupations of youth, Villa struggles to escape. "Life's such a bitch and then you die / Why waste it getting drunk and high," he croons, before sheepishly tacking on, "like I do?" He knows what's best for him, but knowing and doing are two different battles. Just as age might make one feel left behind, self-improvement can be just as isolating: feeding into the cycle of negative personal affect. "Why do I bother asking why?" The humor in "My Friends Are Sober" makes chilling moments like this hit like a bucket of ice water. James Julian Villa is a multi-instrumentalist, producer, and songwriter based in Portland, Oregon. "My Friends Are Sober" is described as his first major release, but Villa has been making a name for himself producing and co-writing for local artists. His tiktok and youtube pages share insight into Villa's production process. Prior to moving to Portland, he studied music composition and piano in Canada, touring and performing in bands since his teen years. Villa's production has been finely tuned under the mentorship and collaboration with Lewis Childs. The two have been forming an ever-growing community of musicians and creatives at Groundswell Studios. Written By Andy Mockbee FOLLOW James Julian Villa:

  • Review: "I Already Told My Mama What You Did" - Evalina

Most of us have gone through tough breakups. We tell people who we are close to about what happened and what the other person did that hurt us. “I Already Told My Mama What You Did” by Evalina is a song we can relate to when the person we used to love betrayed us. The sentiment is relatable: there are no second chances since the damage has been done even though we’re willing to forgive. There’s no point in excuses because the relationship is over, and everyone knows. Once the secret is out, it would be impossible to break through the cement wall of distrust and win another chance back. Immediately at the beginning of the song, there are beautiful guitar strums that introduce Evalina's raw and powerful vocals, capturing the emotion of her lyrics. Bearing a tough breakup can make you go a bit crazy but realizing afterwards that you’re willing to forgive is part of a learning experience. The passion Evalina brings to this track is sensational, subtly contrasted with her upbeat, pop soundscape. The scenario in this breakup anthem is tricky: since she can’t make up with them because she's already spilled her feelings to her mama and about what they did; it wouldn't be ideal to get back together. The sternness of the lyrics continues to the last lines of the song, “No we can’t make up / Cause I already told my mama what you did” brings the dedication of not going back on your words which Evalina did not. Evalina is a singer/songwriter from the UK. She has worked with some established names in the music business that makes her an exciting name in British pop music. Her debut single, “Side Effects” was released in July 2022 and gained reviews from Pop Justice, Earmilk, Celeb Mix, Pop Musik, and many more. Her debut single was on BBC Introducing’s Track Of The Week which was an exciting accomplishment! She also released an acoustic version of the song which debuted at her sold out show for Sofar Sounds. Evalina’s latest single called, “Vivid” was personally chosen by Becky Hill to launch the groundbreaking female led label Lady Of The House as their debut release and to perform the song at W Hotel Amsterdam. “Vivid” was named Track Of The Day on BBC Introducing which received a mention on BBC Radio 1, press coverage from Music Week, Skiddle, Resident Advsior, DJ Mag, Mix Mag, and was put on Spotify’s New Music Friday and New Dance Revolution. Evalina is an artist you definitely don’t want to miss! Written By Lyndsey Cheng FOLLOW EVALINA:
