Using the idea of trying to get a distraction from something that can only distract you for a little bit is something that almost everyone can relate to. “No Angels Below” is Soren Hansen’s latest individual release, its statement as a more personal, more independent piece is followed through in its lyrics.  The song is about letting go, and the fear of doing such.  Hansen speaks a warning of and reports ‘ups and downs’ and holds a consistent anxiety seen in the title that there are no more angels.  The intimacy of the piece, though found in any of his songs, is here a particular nostalgia based on the way the story is told- that is, in the context of a familial conversation.  This in itself, the childlike nature of it, ties again into his ever present theme of moving on.  The missed person needs to be let go, as does this aged conversation about them. Rob Eberle far from disappoints with his latest single, Half of You – an emotionally-charged alt pop ballad that touches on the intricacies of being in a one-sided relationship. Eberle pulls at listeners' heartstrings as he touches on the timeless themes of heartbreak, feelings of personal inadequacy, and unrequited love within his lyrics; carefully crafting a vivid storyline in which the song's protagonist is left emotionally crippled after his romantic interest rebukes his impassioned advances within their relationship. Half of You opens intimately with a roomy piano and Rob's solo voice – eventually ramping up in the first chorus with a cascading crash cymbal and more full-sounding piano/vocals combo. The track's second verse adds layers of synth arpeggios and Eberle's backing vocals, which are melodically emphasizing the phrase "gold". This verse also introduces a big acoustic drum sound with unique slapback delay processing, helping to open up the song in contrast to the more intimate first verse. As the song enters its climax towards the end, the production really starts to take charge by brilliantly piecing together live drums, swirling synth leads, bass, piano, acoustic guitar, and layers of Rob's vocals further emphasizing his own words. Half of You comes full circle by tastefully bringing itself to close with simply a piano and Rob's mesmerizing voice. As a parent, you neve want to be your child’s first source of heartbreak. Yet, there are still millions of children around the world who will grow up without one of their parents. In “how to change a tire,” singer and songwriter Zach Hood sings about his lack of a father figure in life. Hood states that the inspiration for this song came when his father randomly showed up when his brother needed help changing a tire, and he realized he was never taught how to do it. I think this song’s lyrics were written exceptionally well, and you can truly envision the pain that Hood must have felt his whole life. I especially loved the chorus, “But I'm on the side of the road and I'm all alone / With this flat ripped up reminder / That you left and let us down / And you never showed me how to change a tire.” Genuinely, I am so obsessed with Hood’s voice. It’s soft, yet powerful, and made understanding and interpreting his emotions a breeze. I also want to give a shout out to the music video, which was so simple, yet so impactful. In the video, you see Hood walking down the street as he sings. But in the back, you catch a glimpse of a car on the side of the road, Hood not knowing how to change the damaged tire. I think Hood has a gift for writing songs that fill us with emotion and longing. “how to change a tire” is no exception, I loved this song so much. I’m not sure how I’ve never stumbled across Zach Hood’s music until now, but I’m glad that I can now confidently call myself a fan! Hood is a 22-year-old musician from Los Angeles who has been releasing his own music since 2021. His debut single, “Flashbacks,” is only one of his many songs to get millions of streams. This is a feel-good song and the intricate detail to each aspect of the single is openly displayed, from every word to each instrument to the timing of each. PEPTALK knows their way around pop songs. According to PEPTALK, “”Forrest” is an ode to long-term relationships.” The lovers in question seem to be in-tune with each other (“We both hate it when we can’t see eye to eye.”), however, relationships still require work and are never without their difficulties. Laced with beautiful traces of early 2000s nostalgia, this song entices the reader with reference to the movie ‘Forrest Gump”, a melody and lyrics that are hard not to catch onto, and a love story withstanding the test of time in a world where some relationships are over before they even begin, never quite making it past the “situationship” phase. Although the song does speak about lovers quarreling, it also touches on the life of their romance and how it has blossomed over the years, which leads PEPTALK to state that they wouldn’t change their love “for the world.” I found myself anxiously awaiting the beat drop from the first line and the chorus didn’t disappoint, this song is pop royalty. Speaking about the song, PEPTALK stated that “We wanted to capture a realistic vantage into those less-than-perfect moments with your ‘perfect someone’. “We haven’t talked until the sun rose in a long time.” is a definite example of the raw honesty PEPTALK sought to bring the listener in “Forrest”. This is the evidence of the long-term relationship the group spoke about, speaking of what they haven’t done in a long time, cluing the listener in to the fact that they’ve been together a long time. “Forrest” serves as a gentle reminder to hang tough in relationships that are worth hanging onto, sometimes, the love is enough. In this instance, these two lovebirds are in it for the long haul and seeking to stay together, even if they haven’t talked until the sun rose in a long time. “Just like Forrest telling Jenny, “You’re my girl.”.” is a lyric in this song worth remembering, the love story of Forrest and Jenny is one of many twists and turns and even seeming as if it was over many times throughout their story. However, in the end, Forrest and Jenny cement themselves as endgame and marry. PEPTALK is letting their lover know that they see them as endgame also. It's the tragic lament of someone watching someone they love deteriorate from substance abuse and their journey to finally letting them go. We never hope to experience this scenario, but for those of us who have, it's an uphill battle. The stress from constantly worrying about someone puts a lot more strain on the body and mind than you might imagine. And deciding to leave can be even harder. "Breathe Out" brings to light the internal struggles of a dark situation that aren't always visible on the surface. Musically, "Breathe Out" is an airy, reflective, minimalist instrumental wrapped up neatly beneath SATRE's strong, gravelly vocals. It's a vulnerable sound that brings the deepest emotion to the foreground. The song begins with the natural voice of acoustic guitar and just the right amount of reverb. It builds slowly, adding ghostly background vocals and somber piano. Midway through the song, we're hit with uplifting pop-style drums, a gentle reminder to listeners that there is still hope yet. The vocals in the bridge and onward feel so luscious and real as SATRE rounds out the track with one last emotional chorus. The story focuses on power dynamics in the music industry. She says in her own words, "It's about the complexities of power, the facade of success, and the personal compromises one faces in the pursuit of fame." Her siren character experiences the manipulation and vapidity of the industry. The track's commentary is a necessary one, and Isla de Luca takes lyrical risks to convey this. I mean, the chorus is literally, "He said if I sing like I f--k / I'm gonna be a superstar." She shows herself to be a fearless songwriter willing to write boldly to get her point across. Isla de Luca has a strong artistic voice--and "he said," proves that. "he said" is currently Isla de Luca's only single, but not for long. The track is an introduction to the artist's music to come, and if it's anything like "he said," then it will certainly be worth the wait.
