Perfect Time is the latest single and the first collaboration from EDM producer, Blume, and electro pop singer, Mikara. This is Blume's first release of 2024 and he kicks off the year with a banger. The song is about being thankful for a person who may not have been in your life forever but they "came at the perfect time." That lyric is repeated in the chorus several times and grants more power each time Mikara says it. I've found that so many modern breakup pop songs play into the idea that you need to hate your ex and I was pleasantly surprised by the alternative message found in this one. Some may say that it came out at the perfect time . A favorite lyric of mine that relates to this theme was "counting all the reasons you'd walk away/but you still understand me all the same." CHILLS! I'm a huge fan of the fact that after the pandemic brought us a slew of "I hate my ex" songs, there's finally another great breakup anthem with some positivity. Blume's opening of this song resembles the classics... a melancholy electric guitar riff followed by a voice clip of a man trying to reach his ex over the phone. This is followed by Mikara's vocals (which I found to be reminiscent of the legendary Dua Lipa) and some light hi-hat drums. The pre-chorus is what sold me on Mikara as the next pop it-girl when she hits some impressive falsetto notes. The chorus builds to an epic beat drop that really shows off the intensity of Blume as a producer. His EDM style reminded me of the radio hits of Summer '16 which is strangely looked back on as the 'golden age' for my generation. I heard some Zedd, DJ Snake, and Major Lazer influences in there. However, it mostly reminded me of Flume's Never Be Like You . Flume. Blume. I wonder who the next breakout star of the -lume family will be. The song wraps up nicely in an outro where the guy on the phone returns to state, "some people come into our lives for a reason/they don't always have to stay forever to make a difference/sometimes, they get you through when you need someone the most like an angel at the perfect time." Blume and Mikara have great chemistry on this track and I definitely would be tuned in if a producer/singer collab album between the two was announced. Blume started publishing music in 2021 under the Future Daydream record label with his first single, Over Again , which featured vocals from singer Audrey Chan. He later released Heal , another collaboration with Chan, and Something Real featuring Aydren, which is currently his most streamed song on Apple Music. Distractions come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. For Tinsley’s “Distract Me”, that distraction comes in the form of romance, self-sabotaging through dating bad boys with the justification that it’s all “for the plot.” It’s a different kind of damage that dating the wrong people can do, but sometimes it’s hard to help it when all they provide is a warm body as a diversion from your real problems. They occupy your brain and your attention, and, even if all they want is to take your clothes off, you sometimes don’t care if they’re the entertainment you sorely want, but probably shouldn’t. This latest single of Tinsley’s is soft and contemplative with melancholic undertones that helpfully heighten its genre’s dreamy effect. What initially struck me about “Distract Me” was its hazily airy instrumentals. Through the track’s interlaced mellow percussion and strings, you get immediately transported into Tinsley’s world. It’s a soundscape overfull with both whimsical and somber tones, emphasized so fantastically with Tinsley’s gentle vocals. As for its songwriting, “Distract Me” is simultaneously painfully truthful and melodically catchy– allowing yourself to be used and using other people in turn to fill a void in your life, this song reveals what it means to lose yourself in meaningless romance. I especially love the line “You’re like really, really hot / So I’ll do it for the plot”, with a touch of humor and truth, Tinsley shows how easy it is to choose to use people as a distraction, as long as they’re attractive and as long as they provide you with enough attention. Puppeteer is the latest single from FXRLY, an alternative artist who is sure to bring back vibes of the good-old early 2000s punk pop days. Also known by his real name, Dylan Frederick, this is the latest single off of his upcoming album, Winter Blue , which is set to release this Friday. Puppeteer  is a modern throwback indeed down to the themes of rebellion in its lyrics. The opening line, “I’m a goner, but I don’t really want your help/From your savior, I need somebody else,” introduces the audience to the idea that FXRLY may be lost and alone, but he is certainly better off without the person that once controlled him. Juxtaposing rebellion, this song also contains the overarching theme of destruction. The chorus sees FXRLY confessing that he’s “looking for a bombshell to bring [him] pain” and later, comparing his feelings to “the bang of a drum or a blast amongst [his] head.” The metaphor of the titular Puppeteer shows that he is ready to cut off the ‘strings’ of the toxic person that’s been holding him back. He ends this song off with a simple, yet powerful “hit the road”. Upon your first listen to this song, the first thing that will take your attention is the heavy hitting drums. The “eerie yet upbeat soundscape” as the artist describes it is for lack of better words, headbanging. I can picture FXRLY’s first live performance of this song will have fans moshing as if they were transported back to Panic! At the Disco’s first tour in 2005 and hearing I Write Sins, Not Tragedies . FXRLY also proves that the guitar solo is not a dead art form as Puppeteer features a nearly 30-second shredder in the middle of the song that will make the electricity flow through all listeners. However, this song would be nothing if it wasn’t for FXRLY’s nostalgic voice. It took me a while to realize who he reminded me of. It wasn’t Brendon, Patrick, or Gerard. Then, it hit me… he’s Billie Joe Armstrong’s long lost son. After this, it came as no surprise to me when I found out that Green Day was cited as one of FXRLY’s biggest influences. In my opinion, Puppeteer could’ve been a lost track from the American Idiot  record. It takes the sound that has been missing from music for the past decade and freshens it for 2024.  FXRLY started publishing music under the name Farley Drive in 2019 with the release of his first EP, Slightly Uneasy . Originally releasing under the labels No Rival Records and Palm Mute Records, he has been with Wilhelm Records since 2022 and his collaboration with fellow pop punk artist Penny Bored, Girls Like You . His two previous full length albums, Daydream in a Parking Lot and Echoes + Icons  precede the aforementioned Winter Blue which is releasing this Friday. The album will feature Puppeteer as well as the previously released The Other Side and The Heart is Strange which both also took me back to the early 2000s. It will be available both on streaming platforms and on physical CDs. The latest single by artist Edie Yvonne, “Delusion,” is a fun indie pop track about the complexity of being young and learning more about yourself. The song has fun with itself, but there is still a level of youthful angst that pairs nicely with the self-awareness within the song. The pictures painted by the lyrical content are fun to explore and they bring color to listeners. Yvonne’s voice works so well with this song style and her vocal performance on this track is executed perfectly. A lot of parts of this song are so well put together, from the production to the instrumentals. Edie Yvonne shows a lot of talent on “Delusion,” and it certainly is a fun experience to tune in. The introduction of the song does well in presenting the tone in which this track takes place. From the beginning, listeners can agree on how catchy this track is and how easily the beat gets stuck in your head. What’s interesting about the lyrical content is how on one end we have the speaker “making potions” which expresses their want of control over the situation, but we also see the expressed confusion later in the chorus. This complexity represents very well what it is like to be young and on the path of finding normality. Going back to the chorus, Edie Yvonne sounds great on it, and it uses elements of not just indie pop but some indie rock as well. It’s fun how the song ends in a similar fashion as it started, and it brings the story to a nice full-circle moment. Overall, “Delusion” is a great track, and it was fun to see what kind of artist Edie Yvonne is. Edie Yvonne is a 15-year-old LA-based artist who not only works in music but in film as well. She has done really well for someone so young, as her past releases have cultivated a great number of streams. A lot of Yvonne’s songs come from a very personal place and it's clear how much of herself she puts into her craft. She is currently working on an album to be called “GIRL CODE.” Edie Yvonne is certainly an interesting artist and a true breath of fresh air as she brings something so bright and real with her music. Listening to “Delusion” was such an enjoyable time and it was wonderful to get to know Edie Yvonne.
