"Flavor" is the lead single from alt-pop duo Rags to Riches' newest EP, "I NEED A HOLIDAY." Their latest release recounts the band's fun, happy-go-lucky sound with a holiday twist perfect for listening to this December. Throughout the EP, Rags to Riches blends their staple humor with genuine heart, and "Flavor" exemplifies this. The track is about something we can all relate to: not being able to dance, as the duo declares, "I got flavor in all the wrong places baby!" in the chorus. Some might liken love to magic, but the act of disappearing is just another form of deception. In collaboration with Toniia, "Sapphic Magician" is Jamison’s latest single with vocalist Karis, vocal engineer Sunnie Williams, mix engineer Zach Golden, and master engineer Gabi Grella. “Sapphic Magician” is all sultry and dulcet tones but with a touch of melancholy. Throughout this year, Estella has managed to release 10 singles and 3 remixes. She worked her butt off to built her career by releasing as much as she could during this incredible year of music. Now with over 100,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, there's no doubt that Estella Dawn will take over the mainstream music scene. 3. Lexie Carroll Lexie Carroll is a young emerging artist from London, UK who has been winning over the hearts of singer/songwriter and folk/pop lovers everywhere. Elle Coves Elle Coves is a brand new artist who just debuted her career this year, but has already taken the pop world by storm. Her first single, "Before I Fall Apart" has gained over 1 million streams and went viral on TikTok already, and she has over 90,000 monthly listeners on Spotify. She also released three other singles this year, "Summer", "Headcase" and "Lost Cowboy", and was featured on a track by Corey Harper titled "Pink Razor". Born in Germany but based in Ireland, Elle Coves has had one incredible, magical year as a new artist. She toured with Lewis Capaldi, Moncrieff and Wild Youth as well as had her first ever headline show at Notting Hill Arts Club. Her sound is comparable to Taylor Swift, HAIM and Maggie Rogers. 6. Gigi Rich Gigi Rich is a fiery artist who is all about being herself. Inspired by eccentric artists like Freddy Mercury and Lady Gaga, Gigi has put herself out there and is not afraid to be different. Creating to-die-for pop bop tracks with unique vocals and ear-catching lyrics, Gigi is an artist to keep your eye on. She debuted her career in 2017 with her first single, "Same Kind of Crazy" and is no stranger to the music industry. She released four singles this year, including a collaboration with HALLIE titled "If I Saw Your Ex". Each song from 2023 had me blown away; you can tell Gigi is finding the sound that is right for her but also strong enough to get a crowds attention. She has another new single coming out before the year ends titled "Chaotic Good" which you can pre-save here! 7. Meg Smith Meg Smith is a pop artist who debuted her career in 2020. When she released her single, "Cross My Heart I Hope You Die" in 2021, her career skyrocketed. Fast forward to now, the song is pushing to 14 million streams and has been featured in Apple TV's EZRA and Netflix's Ginny and Georgia. This year, Meg Smith recorded a spooky verison of the song in collaboration with Chandler Leighton. Aside from that, Meg has released six singles this year, some with alternative versions, and an EP titled "Rom Com Pop". Meg is a firecracker that you can't stop from shining. The amount of work that she has put in just this year alone is impressive to say the least. 8. LULLANAS LULLANAS is a twin sister duo project created by Pennsylvania natives, Atisha and Nishita Lulla. The girls grew up surrounded by a family who loved music, naturally they took on that trait and have been singing for fun since they were kids. Their true music journey began in college, when Atisha and Nishita discovered their magical and musical chemistry together one day when Nishita was playing a guitar her father had gifted her. Atisha started singing and making up words to go along, and then LULLANAS was born. They've been releasing songs since 2016 and have gained millions of streams, their most streamed song being "Bloom" with over 15 million. After a little break in 2022, they came back stronger than ever this year. Starting with their first single of 2023 in collaboration with Luke Sital-Singh, "Cheap Silver Lining", LULLANAS' sound is more developed than ever. There's not a voice or style out there that is like hers, and everything she writes and sings is literally music to your ears. This year alone, she released 5 singles AND 2 EP's, "part one" and "part two". This included a tear-jerking love ballad in collaboration with her fiance, Caleb Hearn titled "Think I'm Gonna Love You" and a unique take of the classic Frank Sinatra song "Something Stupid". If you're looking for an authentic pop artist with a priceless unique sound, you'll love Michal Leah. 10. SAPPHIRE British singer/songwriter SAPPHIRE has been putting herself in the public eye since she was 7 years old when she started posting covers on YouTube, now holding over 600k subscribers. There’s one thing I love about music, and that is how it allows the artist to bare their emotions to their audience in a raw and genuine way. In Alexander Stewart’s newest song, he explores just that. “if you only knew” is the titular song off his new EP, and goes into his struggles with relationships and his mental health. It is a painfully beautiful song with lyrics that tugged at my heartstrings in just the right way. If his voice wasn’t the best part of the song, the lyrics definitely were. Stewart has a unique way with his words, and managed to create lyrics that many could likely connect with, resulting in a song that shook up the emotions of every listener. “If you only knew / What my mind is tellin' me I should do / That I'm drunk and all alone in my room here tonight / I'm too sad to cry, it's true, oh / If you only knew.” Like I said before, this song is gorgeous to listen to. Aside from the lyrics, Stewart’s voice is one that has got to be recognized. He manages to switch from using a soft head voice to belting effortlessly. You can even hear a soft rasp in his voice as he sings the lyric “Take me out of this hell.” I also want to give props to the backing instrumentals and vocals. The sound of the piano pairs beautifully with the quiet violin. And you can even hear some angelic “oo’s” in the back. It’s so simple, yet perfect. Alexander Stewart is a 24-year-old singer and songwriter based in Los Angeles. He was born in Canada, but moved to LA to pursue a career in music. When an unknown artist messaged Nashville-based music duo Skout, it was clear that it would soon grow to be a hit single. That is exactly what CELINE did, and the result is her new release “hate somebody”. Produced by Skout as well, the song details the feeling of getting too deep in a relationship that has in turn made you lose love for yourself. It also takes the listener on a journey through CELINE’s mind and their own breakup, of how at first she was unsure of the reasoning but came to realize how right this choice was. It emulates the feeling of falling back into love with yourself and knowing that you can be better. The indie pop vibes fit perfectly with the message of this song, and it is overall extremely well crafted. At first, CELINE seems lost while singing, as if she does not know how to handle the situation. The pre chorus states “I can only write when I hate somebody / I can't have somebody be you. I can only feel when I'm broken hearted, run run now so you.” It almost seems like she is trying to protect her ex lover, which is a respectable feat when you feel like you were self sabotaging. However, throughout the song she builds in confidence, and soon realizes that the end of the relationship is for the better. The pre chorus after the second verse states, “I can only stay when I trust somebody / I don't think somebody is you / I can only fight if youre fighting for me / run run now so you.” The song is stacked with harmonies and amazing vocals between the two parties, along with a bridge buildup that rivals some of the best bridges in the music industry. This song is CELINE’s first release, which is truly shocking. It all started with a direct Instagram message to Skout, stating that she had an idea for a song and would love Skout’s collaboration on it. The two were strangers at the time and had never spoken, but two years later they created a work of art. She recently hosted the first SOQUEER SOUNDS, an event that serves as an open mic night for queer individuals in San Diego. Her social media is filled with gracious thanks for everyone involved in this release and who has helped her along the way, and she promises many, many more releases that I am sure will hit just as hard as this one. Alec Benjamin’s latest song, “I Sent My Therapist To Therapy”, is a dark comedy in which therapist after therapist seek their own help after simply hearing what he’s been through.  The irony of the piece allows for a certain humor and word play but the underlying truth behind it is depressing at the very least.  A direct interpretation of the song allows the listener to relate to problems within getting professional mental help, feeling they are beyond it and even more so that the therapist is unequipped to deal with such extensive issues.  The piece addresses using therapy as a cure all when, in reality, therapists are just people and some things are beyond treatment.  A broader take on “I Sent My Therapist To Therapy” extends to all who one may go to seeking help, feeling the burden of their own problems on others.  Either way there’s an obvious theme of being shut out and feeling alone in these issues, but in playing the song itself there is a sense of laughable relatability and community. The piece begins by setting the scene, telling the story like a repetitive anecdote in each new therapist's office.  The pacing is extremely quick, with Alec rattling through lines, almost mocking how he knows them so well due to how much he’s done this- slowing down only when he says “I’ve heard it all before”.  The instrumentals match that storytelling theme set at the start of the song, being minimally used to keep the pace with quick, electric beats but not much beyond this.  Alec Benjamin uses his voice as an instrument in this case, playing the therapist, himself, and a narrator, and adjusting his tone accordingly.  It’s not until the first chorus that a real change in the music itself can be heard and it's an impactful one because of it, cementing that clever line “I sent my therapist to therapy” in the listener’s mind. This song, “locked in july” by Savanna Leigh, is an emotional song all about wishing that things could be different, that you could go back to a time where things were perfect, before they went wrong. Tapping into that feeling of regret, Leigh has crafted a perfect song that showcases what it feels like to know that it’s too late to change things and that what you want, who you want, is now out of your grasp. With lines like “How’d we go from lovers to nothing, felt like just the blink of an eye” and “Even by the time that I’m twenty-five, I’ll still be looking for you in his eyes”, Savanna Leigh’s lyricism captures that longing for a specific person who you can no longer call your own, no matter how much you wish you could’ve stayed locked in July. “Locked in july” is a soft, piano based track that carries the emotions and lets Savanna Leigh’s vocals shine throughout the entire three and a half minutes. Starting simply, with quiet piano, Leigh leads you into the song with a simple first verse, before building up to the chorus with layered vocals and a heavier melody. The pace slows back down for the second verse, but with richer instrumentation in the back, including a louder beat and the addition of harmonization with the piano. The bridge rounds out the song with a new peak in the energy of the track before smoothing out to a calm finish. Situations like this are so toxic for our minds; we may be pleasing everyone else, but at the end of the day you're not happy because you're stuck being somebody you're not. "Silhouettes" by Jacob Frohde is about finding someone you can be yourself with in the midst of this challenging time. When you're with them, you can be comfortable, happy and all those outsiders who wouldn't accept you just fade away from your mind; becoming those unrecognizable silhouettes. It's like nothing else matters when you've got a person who loves you for just the way you are. "Silhouettes" by Jacob Frohde is a soft, delicate, and beautiful modern pop ballad. With minimalistic but gorgeous instrumentation, Jacob puts his uniquely stunning voice at the forefront. You can feel the emotion in every note he sings, and it's a very cathardic experience. The chorus is my personal favorite part of this track because the melody, harmonies and the piano blend so well that it almost brought me to tears.
