  • Review: "fell in love" - dee holt

Photo Credits: Gaëlle Leroyer The so-called “honeymoon phase” is an exciting time in a new relationship. The two parties are on Cloud 9 and want to give all their love to one another. All relationships would be easy if we could stay here forever. Unfortunately, we can’t, for the rose-colored glasses will soon come off. When this happens, the relationship is put to the test. Will all that love remain when the exciting feeling of new love fades? It is great when the answer is, “yes.” This is not always the case though. Dee Holt sings about the other outcome of this situation. Her song, “fell in love” is a pop ballad that reflects back on a relationship that didn’t make it past those blissful first moments. One thing that stood out to me about “fell in love” was the intro. The lyrics are repeated in the chorus. At the beginning, they are sung a-cappella and have an echo. I interpreted this as being the beginning of a flashback. As for the song overall, The instrumentation is sad which perfectly goes along with the lyrics. There is a steady beat during the verses that reminds me of rain. It keeps repeating as Holt sings lines such as “all that made me love you more has disappeared along with you it feels so wrong.” The music becomes more intense on the chorus. It is a harsh flashback to reality as she sings words from the intro. The heavy feeling of heartbreak is very relatable, and Holt is showing her listeners that they are not alone in their sadness. Dee Holt is an alt-pop artist from Montreal, Canada. “Fell in Love” is just one of the songs on her 2023 EP, I'll be there .” It is a collection of breakup anthems and you’ll be able to find one to suit whatever stage of heartbreak you’re in. For instance, the EP’s title track is similar to “fell in love,” as it is mourning the end of the relationship. On the other hand, “sober” is about the freedom of having a toxic person out of your life. Holt has done some great work with this group of songs, and I can’t wait to see what else she has in store. • Review: "GET a GRIP" (feat. Lance Redeker) - Anderson Hao

Anderson Hao’s track, “ GET a GRIP ” is about a relationship that has ended, and the complicated feelings that come with it - the ones where you find yourself struggling to understand what happened. The singer feels guarded, due to being hurt from the cause of the relationship ending and also now has a “ nagging feeling ” about this breakup. The lyrics seem to be about the struggle of letting go of a past relationship and the pain and confusion that came with its ending. The singer is grappling with her own emotions and trying to make sense of what happened. With her angelic and soothing voice, the singer shares this relatable song that can help her listeners that are going through a breakup feel less alone and more understood about navigating a harsh breakup. Breakups are tough, especially the part where you try to move on and leave the past behind. This song features a calming guitar, and in the chorus, Anderson and Lance Redeker sing about passing by someone who looks like her ex while trying to forget about them: “ And I passed you on the street. Could have been someone who looked just like you. Just like you. I’m face down and on the ground again. And I’ll think it over ‘till I don't see you in them.” However, seeing someone pass by that looked very similar to her ex just made the moving-on process harder because it brought up old feelings and memories. The intro suggests that Anderson did make an attempt at moving on, but may have made a mistake by being intimate with someone: ” I hide my neck for two weeks, that’s what I get for sex after honesty .” The combination of this, and later seeing someone who resembles her ex made the moving-on process worse. In the second verse, Anderson acknowledges her pattern of self-sabotage and being taken advantage of: “ My self-sabotage is see-through. You deny it all. Tell me that you didn’t mean to take advantage of my patience. And we’re past the point where I can fake it .” She was no longer able to pretend that everything was okay. She also wonders if things would have been different if she had seen the warning signs and red flags earlier. She wishes she had known what was coming so that she could have avoided the pain and not let her patience be taken for granted: “ If I had seen it, would it have been any different?" Anderson Hao is a pop singer and songwriter. “ GET a GRIP ” was released late April, and she has recently released another single, “ Hand2bible ” this past Friday! Her other songs include, “ 246 ” and “ After U .” Lance Redeker is an alternative artist who grew up in the Bay Area. He currently has over 35,000 monthly Spotify listeners, and his most popular track is “ Truman ”, which surpassed 1 million streams. His latest single is “ No Sense ”, which was released back in February. • Review: "Don't Talk" - Cheska Moore

We all know it's wrong but sometimes we are more attracted to the passion that comes with toxic behavior. A healthy relationship is a nice but raw affection after an absence is better. Most of us pretend it isn't the case but Cheska chooses a different approach. She lays it all on the table and expresses why she likes the bit of toxicity. Intentionally choosing to be toxic to get the results you want from your partner is not the best choice for a happy relationship. But, acknowledging what good can come out of it is all Cheska wants us to do. Don’t Talk urges anyone who enjoys a little bit of toxicity to stand up and say what they feel. Don’t Talk is an eerie dark pop banger. Centering itself in a moody edm soundscape that benefits from heavy basslines in the chorus. The mood of the track is high energy and provocative. Cheska knows what she likes about the relationship is wrong. Enjoying the lack of presence from her partner because of the makeup afterward is so exciting. The relationship is bringing out the worst in her but she keeps pulling for the bad parts of the relationship so she can cut to the passion after the storm. Don’t Talk is a rather unique track because of its subject. The exploration of intentional toxicity is so uncommon. Paired with the unapologetic nature of the track you can’t help but bop your head and relate to the lyrics in some way. Cheska Moore is a South London dark pop icon. She has been working in the music industry since 2019. Making a name for herself with her moody instrumentals and relatable lyricism. She began her journey with Billie Eilish as the main influence on her sound. After playing with different vibes she has ultimately made the genre her own. After a brief break from the spotlight, she has come back to show the progress she's in her absence. Playing with different moods and tackling uncomfortable subjects in her music has become her new frontier and she fits perfectly in the space. Written By Kaiana Lee FOLLOW CHESKA MOORE:

  • Review: "One Summer's Day" - Lucy Crisp

Photo Credits: Ralph Barklam There’s something almost cinematic about finding that special someone in the middle of summertime; they become such an essential in your life that you can’t help but associate them with that euphoric feeling of summertime. It’s a special thing you never want to let go of, so much so that the relationship feels like it could last a lifetime. The latest single by Lucy Crisp, “One Summer’s Day,” captures a special relationship where two people are so fond of each other that it feels like an everlasting summer. The song is a fun pop anthem that is perfect to play this summer as you ride in the car with your special person. Lucy Crisp’s voice shines bright in the song, and it helps perfectly paint the lyrical contents of the track’s story. “One Summer’s Day” is a wonderful summertime love song and should be the next song you add to your playlist. The way the song begins feels like the beginning of a fairytale, with the use of just the piano in the first part of the verse. It perfectly captures the beginning of a new relationship. It also creates a nice contrast from the much more upbeat chorus. The chorus is a nice little explosion that fits so well with the emotion of the song. Lucy Crisp’s vocal performance during the chorus helps contribute to the emotion as it is very powerful. The bridge of the song really captures how important the relationship is and how it’s not just a summer fling, but a much more serious situation. The part where the music stops, and we just hear Crisp’s vocals and some backing vocals. It changes the dynamic of the track and makes it much more interesting. The outro is the perfect way to end a track like this one, the repetition isn’t excessive enough to be annoying, but it’s enough to perfectly wrap up this love story. “One Summer’s Day” is a stellar track, and it really shows off what kind of artist Lucy Crisp is. Lucy Crisp is a pop artist from Nottingham who began writing and playing music at a young age. She likes to get personal in her songwriting and explore moments from her life through music. She began to really explore her musical journey in 2018 when she attended the Confetti Institute of Creative Technologies. In 2020, she released her debut single, “Feet,” which gained over 3,000 streams. Since then, she’s released a few other tracks that have gained her some recognition with BBC and Fresh On The Net. It’s clear that Lucy Crisp is making a name for herself and the works she creates are impactful with their storytelling. There’s a clear passion for what she does and it’s what makes her music great. Lucy Crisp’s debut EP “65 Roses” will be released later this year so keep an eye out for this star. Written By Chantal Charles FOLLOW LUCY CRISP: *Sponsored Post - Discovered on Musosoup. • Review: "Storage" - Conor Maynard

Wouldn’t it be convenient if the memory operated like a filing cabinet? Picture it: memories that invoke a particular emotion could be stored in the same drawer. The memories that invoke pleasant memories could be placed high while the unsavory memories are placed very low – lower than the eyesight would bother to see. But most importantly, a memory couldn’t be retrieved unless we chose to open a particular drawer. It would prevent those pesky memories that have a mind of their own from imposing their presence on us when we least suspect it. And it would certainly help Conor Maynard with his broken heart in “Storage”. “Storage” is a contemporary pop single about how we retain and ruminate on the various memories of a relationship after its end. The last thing we want to do is reminiscence post break-up, but these memories tend to occupy all the space within our mind. It makes the weight of the current heartache being experienced all the heavier to carry. The single opens with deep piano notes to reflect this weight, while Maynard divulges some of the memories from his previous relationship that are intruding his mind without warrant. But the depth of the heartache Maynard is experiencing is heard in the song’s chorus. Here Maynard pours his heart out, making listeners wish they could give him a big hug. As the song builds in momentum, listeners hear the addition of more instruments to convey both differing emotions as well as the contrast between reminiscing and the reality at hand. The beginning of the second verse recalls more memories to upbeat guitar plucking, signifying the nostalgia Maynard still holds for these memories during these moments of recollection. However, the pre-chorus that follows brings Maynard back to reality as forlorn violin strings play – these are now memories of someone he once loved and called his own. The music video also stresses another noticeable contrast; the one between physical stagnation and an overactive mind. Within the video, we see Maynard physically stagnant as he sits on a bedroom floor against a bed while singing “Storage” which serves as an outlet to voice the copious contents of his overactive mind. After winning 2012’s MTV Brand New, Conor Maynard was signed to Parlophone Records and became one of the first artists to successfully transition from online fame to pop-stardom. Under the guidance of Ne-Yo, Maynard released his debut album Contrast in the same year. Since then, the artist has had a steady stream of released singles that highlight his growing vulnerability and maturity within music. In 2018, Maynard showcased his pipes on Broadway’s Kinky Boots, taking over the role of Charlie Price. His rendition of “Soul of A Man” is my personal favorite and it’s a crime that an official version was never released to stream. In 2020, Maynard departed from Parlophone Records to become an independent artist. Now, the independent pop icon’s upcoming album +11 Hours is set to be released on June 9th, with “Storage” featuring as the third single on the album. The album is centered around the difficult breakup Maynard experienced last year, with the album’s title being the time difference between the artist and his former partner. If you've enjoyed Conor Maynard's bittersweet ballad as much as I have, show him some virtual love in the form of streams, likes, and follows. Written by Giavanna Gradaille FOLLOW CONOR MAYNARD:

  • Review: "Hunting Games" - Amelie Blake

Amelie Blake's "Hunting Games" is an exciting, seductive-sounding track about a cat-and-mouse chase relationship. Her lusty, dream-like vocals are captivating, drawing the listener into the depths of the rich lyricism. As a fan of artists like Amy Winehouse and Lana Del Rey, I was instantly sucked into the inspired-sounding track. It felt like it could have fit amongst Del Rey's "Born To Die" or another well-establish pop album. But still, Blake has crafted a sound that is quite her own. Her soft vocals and drum-filled production made it an easy, but rich listening experience that I was drawn into from the first notes of the track. The descriptive, metaphorical lyricism in Blake's "Hunting Games" kept me hooked. She compares a man and wolf, crafting a bit of a dangerous feeling with lyrics and production. Lyrics like "He's deadly" and "Big bad wolf and he calls me" left me transfixed by this back and forth 'hunting game' that Blake describes in her song. Balanced with both well-crafted harmonies and lyrics, it is a femme fatale track that anyone looking for an explorative and feminine song can enjoy. The song explores the feeling of 'being prey' in a soft, ethereal sense that made it an alluring track. Amelie Blake, a UK singer-songwriter, has significant experience in the songwriting realm with credits that range from Netflix to BMG. This songwriting experience shines bright on "Hunting Games," the second single released as part of her independent artist career. The first was "Let The Worlds Unfold" in 2020. She has already gathered a decade of experience under her belt, but it is clear that her career will travel even further as she steps into the spotlight. If you are looking for a soulful pop singer with a rich voice and luscious songwriting, look no further than Amelie Blake. Written By SYDNEY GRAY FOLLOW AMELIE BLAKE:

  • Review: "Stain" - Edie Yvonne

Edie Yvonne’s latest release, “Stain”, explores the concept of not only surviving through, but living with one's differences. The title refers to Edie’s experience living with her birthmark, feeling permanently stained. It is one thing to feel isolated from society in such a way, but as she explains, it is more than this. She endures a sort of ridiculed isolation, being alone and yet too noticed. Edie bravely addresses this topic, offering insightful commentary on the comments of others and on her own response. She knows you're “supposed” to be unphased, to be proud, she gives herself directions throughout the lyrics on this. Yet, it is only through the rehearsal of this and the repeated circumstances she finds herself in that she comes to genuinely feel self acceptance. And this is what her story tells, not the journey of self acceptance for the sake of social acceptance, but rather, for herself. The song begins with an intense, cinematic sounding piano. It’s classical and full of drama, immediately sparking emotion. Edie’s voice begins far away, echoing, as if we're listening to her very thoughts. String instruments join and pick up the pace, swelling with her rapidly piling thoughts. And then it is silent. “Walking into a room” she sings, bringing the listener back to reality with her now clear voice. The beat remains steady and slow, rejoining Edie’s singing with a pace that makes it surprising each time. The instrumentals seem to mimic her footsteps and anxious heart, this tension completely immerses the listener in the scene she describes. But when the music picks up again, it isn’t full of the overwhelming emotion it was, instead it is light and relieving. “The things you say will fade away” she sings with pride, implying her birthmark won’t. Those who mock her will disappear, but she will always have herself and she won’t be ashamed of any part of her identity. Edie Yvonne, the just fourteen year old singer, began making music in 2020 with the release of her first album “At Ease”. Her entrance to the public eye, though, was originally as an actress, starring in Chloe Sevingy’s “Kitty”. Her first single “With the Light” was based on the character she played there, intertwining her talents. Since, she’s continued acting, but has largely focused on music, releasing three singles on Spotify in the past year alone. In the past three months, she’s gained more than five thousand followers on Spotify, and continues to draw attention with her unique sound and beautifully crafted music videos that match it. “Stain”, the latest of these projects, was written after re-entering a public atmosphere following quarantine. The piece was written about finding her own self confidence, but is truly meant to inspire such feelings in others, she’s even gone so far as to donate a portion of the song's profits to the Vascular Birthmarks Foundation in search of helping those who may relate to it.
