  • Review: "30" - Zach Hood

When things get difficult and begin to build up in our lives, it often seems impossible that the dust will one day settle and a better future exists. Zach Hood, like the rest of us, has experienced times in his life when he felt stuck in the present, yet also had an incredibly difficult time fully living in it. His new single “30” is reminiscent of the time Zach spends at home with his mother, and how sad he becomes each time he has to leave home. When he sings that he hopes she sees him at thirty, it is not because he doesn’t think he will make it to that age, but he genuinely hopes that she will one day see him at thirty. It is “walking through life one step at a time,” and making it to thirty years old is a great step in the right direction. The song opens with a beautiful acoustic melody, which is quickly accompanied by Zach’s crisp voice. There is slight harmonization and voice layering throughout this verse to emphasize certain points in the song. He keeps this consistency throughout the entire song, with some slight builds to the guitar rhythm in the chorus. In the second verse, there is a chorus in the background harmonizing with both Zach and the melody, which adds to the pure nature of the song. This all quiets down when Zach begins to talk about his mother, which again stresses the importance of the subject. It picks up once again when he begins to sing that he hopes his mother sees him at thirty, as the guitar begins to slowly fade out. Alabama is Zach Hood's home. Always will be. Daphne, Alabama is the place he began to discover his love for singing, and also where he believes he found his purpose in life. Once he started gaining more success in music, he moved to Los Angeles where he has since accumulated over 40 million streams, hundreds of millions of views on his videos, and many popular singles to his name. In 2021, his first-ever single titled “Flashbacks,” an emotional punk-pop ballad about the wounds of his family, got over 4.8 million streams on Spotify. His following song “Isabelle” blew up with over 12 million streams. Every song he has released has meaning, and Zach hopes to continue making music that you can take something out of. We are excited to hear all of his upcoming songs! Written By Molly Schiff FOLLOW ZACH:

  • Review: "Stumbling" - Sarcastic Sounds

Nobody has their finger on the defeated pulse of young adults quite like Jeremy Fedryk, AKA Sarcastic Sounds. Like the plant spilling from its pot on the cover (as well as the music video) of his latest single, "Stumbling," any progress can be wiped away in an instant. With immaculately-produced beats, live drums, and plucky guitars, the sound of "Stumbling" is undeniably current. The breeziness to the production allows for space to breathe within its weed-soaked soundscape. This makes Sarcastic Sounds' latest single the perfect sound for blissful afternoons on the couch, parking lot hotboxing, or late night comedowns. Lyrically, "Stumbling" follows the trendy, of-the-moment sound with self-deprecation, humor, and reference. "Think I'm too stressed to be blessed," he remarks. These bars color the single with personality, tapping into a very current mood of malaise. Ultimately, "Stumbling" hits its stride when Fedryk flexes his sharp wit and wordplay. "Every hit that I take's a knockout blow," he sings, equal parts funny and confessional. These moments highlight the unique perspective his Sarcastic Sounds moniker suggests, but also hint towards the person underneath. The reason "Stumbling" succeeds as an emotionally revealing song is because the goofy references ("every L that I take, I smoke one,") brings out the startling honesty behind its more direct admissions. "I don't know how I do it, but I find a way." Sarcastic Sounds balances it all on the tightrope of optimism. Sarcastic Sounds is the creative project of Canadian producer and singer/songwriter, Jeremy Fedryk. Signed to Columbia, he has a stacked resumé. Learning production in his teen years, Sarcastic Sounds has had a remarkable breadth of experience at such a young age. Prior collaborations include the likes of Powfu, Rxseboy, and Sista Prod. Notably, Fedryk even coproduced the track "Mahogany" on Lil Wayne's 2020 album Funeral . The young producer has released a myriad of singles, each showcasing his impressive and versatile skill alongside his love for lo-fi hip-hop. "Stumbling" releases ahead of his forthcoming, debut album. Written By Andy Mockbee FOLLOW Sarcastic Sounds:

  • Review: "Acting Up" - Renon

Photo Credit: Studio Sans The popularization of hookup culture has commonly had a negative effect on romantic relationships, social behavior and expectations in our modern society. Renon’s new single, “Acting Up” is an alt-pop track that perfectly communicates the frustration and anger that may arise in manipulative encounters with potential hookups. “Acting Up” is a catchy and confident anthem that showcases themes of empowerment, rejection, honesty, anger and self-respect. The song celebrates womanly power and the ability to act up when needed. Renon’s passionate lyrics such as, “Baby I can give myself a kiss, see you need me, I don’t need you, do I have to spell it through?”, express self-love and independence, and communicate the idea that you should never depend on a man for your happiness or satisfaction. Renon’s excellent vocal range, ethereal voice and expressive instrumentation make “Acting Up” the perfect anthem for self-confidence and feminine rage. “Acting Up” contains stunning instrumentation. The blend of driving bass, edgy guitar riffs, pulsating synths and powerful vocals mix perfectly to create a fierce and empowering track. Renon’s expressive voice conveys both ferocity and vulnerability, which helps to successfully communicate the ever-changing emotions that rise to the surface when someone’s self-worth and dignity is shaken. Renon utilizes creative music production techniques to ensure the instrumentation aligns with the message communicated by the track’s lyrics. For instance, “Acting Up” is introduced with a simple guitar riff that sets the tone and introduces the theme of the song. The song then builds up with more instruments and layers, creating a fuller and richer sound that matches the intensity and emotion of the chorus. The bridge features a groovy electronica inspired instrumental break with hypnotizing vocalization. The instrumentation and vocals then accelerate again in the final chorus, creating a sense of resolution, feminine rage and empowerment. London Based, Canadian singer-songwriter, Renon is a self-proclaimed “emo jazzy popstar” whose music touches on topics of love, heartbreak and mental health. Renon is a persona created by musician, Emma Grenon. Inventing an alter-ego allowed Emma to open up about her emotions and speak her mind through songwriting and style. • Review: "Nothing" - Jess Meilman

Jess Meilman’s “Nothing” is a gut-wrenching track about the aftermath of a relationship when all love is not lost. Sometimes, the hardest breakups are not from betrayal or toxicity, but the sad truth that someone you love with all your soul, just isn’t the one. A person came in, took a piece of your heart, and is now gone without a trace, but every word they said, kiss you shared, and hope for a happy ever after still lingers. They move on to the girl they swore up and down meant nothing and subsequently seem happier than ever. Now, every place you went together reminds you that you no longer are enough. You’d die for someone who could move on so easily, and you’re left with nothing. You feel like nothing, and you want to call them, but you have nothing to say, There’s a magnetic pull between two people who were in love, and that pull does not just disintegrate because one person decides to leave. A breakup can be amicable until the aftermath sinks in that someone is inevitably going to move on before both hearts are healed. You’re left with scars that the best doctor in the world couldn’t heal, and yet, there they are seemingly happier than ever with a new girl and a fresh start. You can convince yourself it was never real and they never even cared, but the 1% of you that is not cynical and self-loathing knows they still love you… they are just way better at pretending. You can avoid all the places you went, compare yourself to the newest notch on his belt, and blame yourself for not seeing it sooner, but you should never be ashamed for properly mourning a relationship that molded you and showed you real love does exist. People are never going to handle things the way we would have, and that’ll drive you crazy if you let it. Give yourself grace; give yourself time to heal. Soon enough, you’ll be happier than ever, and he’ll just be a guy you used to date. You’ll see him at your favorite restaurant that you used to avoid, and as he’s hit with everything that was and how much he wants you back… you’ll feel nothing. “Nothing” is the quintessential indie-pop tearjerker. Jess Meilman’s therapeutic release acknowledges all the words we left unsaid after a devastating heartbreak. She wrote this song from a place of confusion after her own run-in with heartbreak when there is still that palpable, magnetic love between the two parties. Her music comes straight from the heart. She uses her past experience as a guidepost for her artistry and lets us read the secret diary she keeps in her mind. Her song plays like a movie, and we’re instantly transported to our very first heartbreak. This is the breakup song where you’re allowed to be sad and give yourself time to mend what you didn’t break, so we’ll turn it up, roll down the windows, and take the long way home with “Nothing” on repeat until our hearts start to heal. This New York bred singer/songwriter launched her career with powerhouse bops, “Guilty Soulmate” and “Plenty.” She combines thought-provoking lyrics with ethereal vocals to create a sonic masterpiece. She honed her craft from a young age in the family’s piano room where she would spend hours on end writing songs and performing them. Inspired by the soundscapes of SZA and Tame Impala, her deep soul and wisdom bleed into every track she touches. Jess uses her music to connect with her audience, heal herself, and understand the world. Jess is an indie soul who has a creative outlook on the world and the heart and intuition of an empath. Constantly in the studio in Los Angeles, this is just the beginning of what’s to come for Jess Meilman in 2023! Written By Grace Chapman FOLLOW JESS MEILMAN:

  • Review: "PROM" - DALBY

"PROM," the newest single from DALBY, narrates an entertaining, fictional story about a mean girl stealing DALBY's prom date. As DALBY tends to write more mature lyrics, she was encouraged to write a song that sounded more like her young age. "PROM" is an amusing song filled with teen angst and slightly sarcastic lyrics, giving a fun take on something that might not feel so fun in real life. This track comes right on time as we're currently in the midst of prom season. "PROM" is an upbeat anthem for all the teens going through one of the most fun and stressful times of their lives. Even if you're well past your prom days and they are a distant memory for you, "PROM" is still a fantastic listen you'll want to play on repeat. "PROM" oozes punk rock energy, combined tastefully with contemporary pop. DALBY's fierce vocals are reminiscent of Avril Lavigne, filling the song with a proper amount of attitude and angst. Though the lyrics are spiteful and a little angry, the upbeat track keeps things light and fun. "PROM" is full of catchy melodies, edgy guitars, and energetic beats, creating a song perfect to jump around and dance to. The lighthearted anthem is a great listen for anyone looking to brighten their day or shake out any negative feelings. "PROM" is a fresh addition to the pop punk world and is a must-listen for any pop punk fan. At an impressive 16 years old, DALBY is a talented singer, songwriter, and activist. She chooses not to label herself with genres and states, “I really don’t like labeling myself to any genre, because I hate feeling like there’s no room for me to expand or grow…hopefully, if you like one of my songs, you like one of my songs, and it shouldn’t be a matter of genre.” Harry Styles, Ed Sheeran, and Taylor Swift are a few of her inspirations. DALBY's first professional project was an independently produced album at the age of 12; in the past 3 years, she has written hundreds of songs including "blanket" and "bitter." • Review: "Outta My League" - Andrew Ash

" Outta My League " by Andrew Ash is a catchy disco pop song that draws inspiration from the 80s. The lyrics reflect on Andrew approaching someone that he perceived to be out of his league. However, the song goes on to show that Andrew took a chance and engaged with this person, resulting in an adorable exchange where there was mutual affection! By taking a leap of faith and believing in himself, Andrew's confidence was elevated, which we see him being thankful for. The encounter between the two individuals was both unexpected and surreal for Andrew, which he describes as a magical moment. His willingness to take a chance on love has led to him and his significant other being in a state of euphoria. There was an individual whom Andrew found attractive, perceiving them as someone who was probably popular and out of his league. At first, Andrew lacked the confidence to approach them, but they ended up meeting anyway and he felt a reciprocated energy and connection, causing him to do a double-take. Andrew was taken aback and felt as if he was experiencing a magical moment. He expressed his disbelief and admiration by singing, “ It felt a lot like magic. How did this happen?” As well as, “Damn you're so stunning. Are you just a fantas y?” The message of the song is to inspire and encourage listeners to embrace confidence and take a leap of faith when pursuing love. Initiating a conversation or making the first move with someone that you find attractive can be scary and nerve-wracking, especially if you feel like they wouldn’t even bat an eye at you if you walked up to them. However, the song urges listeners to follow Andrew’s example, as he took a chance and experienced a positive outcome! To discover the possibilities of love for you, you must believe in yourself and go for it without a second thought. Rather than avoiding it, take the opportunity, as it may not present itself again! Fun fact, his personality was a 10/10 as well! Andrew reveals this to us by sharing, “ You’re so much more than a face and a body. Well rounded inside and ou t.” He also expresses how extremely happy he is to have a positive outcome with someone he could’ve missed an opportunity on by positively bragging about it by singing, “ Please forgive me for staring, this isn’t usually me. You’re just a miracle, it's hard to believe. I can’t stop thinking about it baby, I thought that you were outta my league . Look at me. I got somebody outta my league! Ain't ashamed about it. Want the whole world to see!" You can also catch a lovely electric guitar solo after he repeatedly mentions this verse. He does this to flaunt how proud he is of himself for taking a leap of faith into love, having a positive outcome, and scoring a cutie, just as he should! He won! Andrew Ash is a pop singer and songwriter from Portland, Oregon. A cute fact about this song is that it's based on a true story from 2005! At the time, Andrew was dating somebody who he felt was out of his league. He jotted down his feelings into a journal, which then turned into song lyrics, and now this pop jam! Years later in 2019, he re-discovered the journal and all of the memories and emotions from the year had returned back to him. This song was released today, so make sure to check it out on streaming platforms! And be sure to follow Andrew Ash’s musical journey by clicking on the links below! • Review: "Gimme (It Girl)" - Drugs Cosmetics

Summer is steadily approaching, and I’ve got the perfect song to get you ready for it. It’s got sultry vocals that never lose enthusiasm throughout the single's runtime. Mixing that keeps things interesting while keeping you on your toes. A stringed instrument to make you fawn as it keeps up with change in tempo and dynamics. An overall vibe that encapsulates pure excitement. And leaves you wanting more - for it to never end. But if you put it on loop it doesn’t have to end. Let me introduce you to Drugs Cosmetics latest single, “Gimme (It Girl)”. Listen to "Gimme (It Girl)" by Drugs Cosmetics here. “Gimme (It Girl)” is a high-energy banger that’s determined to play on repeat in your head and on your playlist. The song opens with Max Steger’s guitar plucking that mimics a ticking bomb moments before it blows. This is building up towards something explosive and listeners are bracing themselves for it. Alongside the strings is Shi la Rosa’s alluring and provocative vocals that are calling in for love. But love always seems to come knocking at the door at the wrong time. That’s okay, though - just because it’s the wrong time doesn’t mean we still can’t have a good time. And if Drugs Cosmetics is providing the good time, I’m more than happy for love to be placed on the back burners for now. The bomb’s finally detonated as the chorus bursts into the single. It gives listeners endless guitar riffs to get addicted on when they’re not transfixed by Pete Cho’s mixing or Shi la Rosa’s energetic delivery. The song repeats this sequence as it progresses, making the high listeners get each time greater and greater. It also transforms the “Gimme just a little bit” lyrics in the latter half of the chorus into a double entendre: we don’t want just a little bit of love - we want a little bit more of the song, too. We’re craving more. And I’m especially craving a music video! If “Gimme (It Girl)” already has me this delirious from an auditory experience, I can only imagine what accompanying visuals could do. The alt-pop band, Drugs Cosmetics, was founded in Chicago but came together in Los Angeles. The group consists of Pete Cho and Shi la Rosa, with guitarist Max Steger joining with the release of the group’s single, “Car Crash”. They make unique blends of pop music that have elements of alternative, dance, indie, and rock in it – satisfying the palette of any casual listener. But each member has an impressive discography outside of the group, too. Pete Cho’s 2020 EP, CHO, features some fantastic dance-pop singles – “Talk (Make Up My Mind” is a personal favorite of mine. Shi la Rosa’s 2017 EP, Sometimes I Think of You, is bedroom-pop that’ll have you hooked for days. And Max Steger mixed and mastered the recent, soul-filled R&B excellence that is “Candlelight” feat. D Smoke by SHERIE. If you’ve enjoyed the collective creativity of Drugs Cosmetics as much as I have, show them some virtual love in the form of streams, likes, and follows. You just might be able to catch them create and produce upcoming music on their live Twitch streams, too. Written by Giavanna Gradaille FOLLOW DRUGS COSMETICS:

  • Review: "I Wish I Was This Girl" - Mauve

Envy is a hell of a drug and too many people let it take over their lives. Mauve wants to embrace that little bit of bitterness. I Wish I Was This Girl is a cheeky play on jealousy. Seeing someone through the lens of the internet and wishing that was your life is a common experience. It’s normal to feel jealous but it shouldn't be taken so seriously. Mauve refers to this track as an ode to Nepotism babies. That may seem strange to most. Nepotism is a hot topic currently and most don’t take too kindly to those who seem to skip through the hard parts of life. It may not be fair but it can't be changed so, why not blow off some steam with this track? I Wish I Was This Girl is a danceable bubblegum pop track made to help with the ache of bitterness and envy. The track opens with a beachy guitar and the playful tones of the mauve’s voice. The song immediately elicits a sense of nostalgia. Its instrumental is similar to the iconic bubblegum pop tracks of the 90s. The nostalgia is only a fraction of what makes this track so addicting. Mauve does her best to create vivid images with her lyrics. Each lyric paints a picture of what Mauve herself is seeing that makes her so jealous. Though this track is meant to soften the blow of jealousy Mauve spends a good bit on this track cheekily describing the girl who seems to have everything. The object of Mauve's Jealousy is living it up on beaches and red carpets while Mauve watches. It’s bittersweet because on one hand she wishes he had this life on the other she knows the images she sees may not be true. The lyric “the IG carousel obstructing my view" is a line that points out self-awareness in Mauve. She knows what she is seeing on this girl's Instagram may not be real life but she can't help but feel envious of the lifestyle this girl portrays. The track is fun yet deep and worth multiple listens. Mauve is a Canadian pop star with so much under her sleeve. With each song, she reveals a part of herself that is relatable and unique. Her songs capture ideas that not many have covered which make her stand out so well among the crowd. She loves dabbling I’m different genres but consistently brings the playful electro-pop she is known for. Mauve sees music as something more than storytelling. She feels as though music can take you to a whole other reality and she perfectly shows this through her sound. She is a unique soul who wants to share her essence with the world through song. She began her journey at 14 years old and has since gained a massive following online. She has been nominated for many awards and this is just the beginning. Mauve can only go up from here and her talents will certainly take her to the top. Written By Kaiana Lee FOLLOW MAUVE:

  • Review: "In Between" - SOZI

Love is not something that’s meant to be simple; with that, there’s a guarantee that it will not be easy. The relationship will be far from absolutely perfect in an indisputable way, but it will also be far from imperfect to you. Thus, this ideal love will exist in the in-between. SOZI’s new single titled “In Between” details this sweet spot perfectly, incorporating instrumentals to draw out the exact feelings of the in-between. SOZI utilizes the layering and addition of sound, beat, and tempo leading up to an explosive chorus to show us what it feels like to be in one of these relationships, and how amazing it is when you experience it for yourself. SOZI’s soft voice brings us into the song's first verse, where she sings about all that she wants with the person she loves. A lot of echoey instrumentals are introduced into the background of her single as the first verse continues, which is to illustrate the buildup of feelings in this “in-between” spot in a relationship. The chorus incorporates these same sounds at an even higher intensity; something you would hear in a movie or a club. With this, we as the listeners get a sense of the euphoric feeling this relationship causes, which is what makes it so addicting. And just like this relationship, the way SOZI’s voice and the instrumentals work together in this song will make you want to listen to it again, and again, and again. After entering the Los Angeles music scene, SOZI is making a big name for herself. Growing up surrounded by music in her family, it was inevitable that she developed a strong love for singing, dancing, and entertaining a crowd. SOZI has been classically training in the piano since she was seven years old and started writing songs just three years later at age ten. She stands out among the other budding musical talents already, with her debut single “Drinking For Two” released on December 20th already amassing over 20,000 streams on Spotify. She has performed on the sages of the Viper Room, Hotel Cafe, Bar 20, and many more respected establishments. We are excited to see where SOZI’s career takes her! • Review: "Pretty Eyes" - KID TRAVIS

Being in love is a feeling that can put you on Cloud 9. Even though it is great, this powerful feeling can get in the way of your better judgment. You put on the rose-colored glasses and can see no wrong in your object of affection. You may not even realize you’re doing it until it’s too late. When the glasses break, you may be left to pick up the pieces on your own. KID TRAVIS' new upbeat pop song "Pretty Eyes" details this experience. More specifically, he hones in on the fact that pretty eyes cannot be trusted. The prettiest eyes caused him to believe the "prettiest lies". In KID TRAVIS’s song, “Pretty Eyes,” the elements are very contrasting. On the one hand, the instrumentation sounds like a daydream. This is fitting, as KID TRAVIS sings, “I took one look and lost myself” in the chorus. It is very bright with a strumming acoustic guitar and drums. The background vocals also contribute to this mood, especially the “la, la,la…” and the whistling sounds. On the other hand, the main vocals seem like they are reflecting on a past experience. In the opening lines to the first verse, KID TRAVIS sings, “Baby, you’re my weakness, but your love was pretense.” He later says “maybe we can meet up in another life.” These elements work well together because they are contrasting the good and bad parts of love, being on Cloud 9 and coming back down again. KID TRAVIS has a huge passion for music. His work is very diverse, and he does not restrict himself to the creation of a single genre. Travis has built a huge following with his original music and visuals. He has even garnered praise from some big names in the industry, such as Post Malone and Dominic Fike. If you want to hear more of him, I recommend “Strawberry Skies,” the title track off of his 2020 album. Similar to “Pretty Eyes,” it has a pop sound. The instrumentation also matches the title, as it sounds smooth like a sunset drive. The lyrics reflect on the joy of spending time with the one you love! Written By Kelli Dixon FOLLOW KID TRAVIS
