Q: ‘Indifferent’ is so catchy! What is the meaning behind the song? Kayla: Thank you! Indifferent is a song written for those who have been hurt by someone over and over but used that pain as ignition to become a better version of themselves. This song can be interpreted in many ways, it doesn't have to be about a significant other. It's about reaching your full potential on your own without anyone holding you back. Personally, when I listen to this song, it inspires me to keep striving to be the best I can be. Q: What was your favorite part about creating this song? Kayla: My favorite part of making this song was how creative I was able to be with it. Nowadays with technology, anything in music is possible and there are infinite sounds and vibes you can create when it comes to the production. Q: Who is someone you would love to collaborate with? Kayla: I would love to collaborate with Banks because I feel that we have many things in common and I love the uniqueness of each of her songs. Q: How does music make you feel? Kayla: Music gives me an opportunity to express my feelings and it has always been a very important part of my life. If I’m ever feeling low, listening to my favorite songs can brighten my mood! And on the flip side, when all is well, listening to music, keeps me in a happy place. Q: Do you have any hobbies outside of music? Kayla: Growing up, I played soccer and although I haven’t played in a while, I would really like to get back into it. I also enjoy cooking and often make a variety of dishes for my friends and family. Q: What are you most looking forward to in terms of your musical career? Kayla: I am most looking forward to being able to have a positive impact on others through my music. I hope they will be able to connect with my music sonically and lyrically because when I write, I bring my deepest emotions to the songs. - Review: "Dancing Alone" - Emma See
Beginning with an almost ominous-sounding synth, "Dancing Alone" by Emma See is an enjoyable dreamy-pop song. Emma's soft and wispy vocals immediately relax the listener. This track takes you through an array of emotions, doing it perfectly. Starting with loneliness and longing but evolving into realizing that maybe you'd rather be without the person. I am in love with this song. The production and vocals hook me, and I'm sure every other listener. The design of the chorus is addicting to listen to, coupled with the tranquil instrumental, which makes this track impossible to not like if you are a fan of pop. This is a song you would hear playing in a club and quickly pull up the Shazam app on your phone, desperately hoping the chattering around you doesn't disrupt the app too much so you can find this song. If you like artists like Ellie Goulding, Troyve Sivan, or Melanie Martinez, you are going to love "Dancing Alone" by Emma See. Dancing alone is a song for people who are finding themselves. After leaving someone you were involved with, you realize that it is time for self-discovery and independence instead of searching for new love. Emma See describes her previous love as a "love placebo that was born to die," letting the listener know that this was a feeble attempt at love in the first place. The songwriting on this track is incredibly unique; there's a tangible style that you can pick up on. It reminds me a lot of the indie artist Clairo. Emma See is a London-based up-and-coming pop artist. The most streamed song she's in has an impressive 8,000 streams. Originally from Denmark, the young Danish artist has been featured on several albums where she co-wrote and sang. She's an active user of Instagram, promoting her music and live performances often. Emma has released three other singles on her Spotify account, dating back to 2019. She posts covers on her TikTok account, along with videos of her performing live. - Review: "Wake Up and Find" - AIRBEAR
Bringing an upbeat, melodious sound to a song about miraging emotions, AIRBEAR's newest single, "Wake up and Find" describes the combination of fear and excitement that accompanies a new bond with someone special. The artist lays all emotion on the table with a confessional, relatable insight into the highs and lows of crushing on someone. Unapologetically, AIRBEAR's crush is the first thing on his mind every day. The song rhythmically immerses listeners in the sweet, frustrating, youthful anxieties of growing affections for a new infatuation. "Wake Up and Find" is not only one of AIRBEAR's first released singles, but also the artist's first published music video. Both musically and visually, the song and video capture the happy-go-lucky energy embodied in the lyrics and AIRBEAR alike. The song, reminiscent of an early 2000s angsty high school anthem, opens with soft guitar and clear, honest vocals that lead into a catchy chorus crafted with a dancing spirit. Full of romantic pop-inspired sounds and authentic, relatable sentiments, fans will find the artful single stuck in their heads within their first few listens. Though an experienced performer, AIRBEAR is relatively new to the independent music scene. "Wake up and Find" is the third single from singer-songwriter AIRBEAR, aka Aaron Gugino. With incredible beats, production, and lyricism, MaeLeigh has managed to excel in all parts of the song making process to create a song that connects with listeners in many different ways. - Review: "Perfect Lie" - TONICA
Bringing a darker edge to an 80s-inspired electro-pop sound, TONICA brings us a song to reflect on the frustrations of being put in situations that weren’t ideal. We’ve all dealt with our plans being uprooted either by this recent pandemic or other events, but we can relate to the pain of not being able to go for what we want because of circumstances out of our hands. But we have to grin and bear it, hoping that we’ll be able to go for it soon. “Perfect Lie”, this newest release by TONICA, aims to talk about the lie we dream about—the daydreams that take over when we’re left to our own devices with nothing to do but imagine what is yet to come. A fantastic retro-styled music video pairs with this meaningful track, bringing us along on the journey of how the band came to be with visuals akin to an old-school cinema and B-movie horror vibe. In the meaning of dreaming of what they could become, “Perfect Lie” holds that in its lyrics. The song sings, “Do you believe in a perfect lie?/Keeping the faith as your dreams pass by/Because I do, I do” The duo brings this alternative pop track with a euphoric feeling to enrapture listeners. It’s guided by the track’s vocals, leading into a beautiful chorus filled with a guitar and a pleasant synth wave. It’s a track that stands in the face of struggles and tells it that we’re not backing down. TONICA is a Manchester-based electro alt-pop duo that stuns fans with a contemporary, hook-heavy, electronic sound that takes from a darker side. They’re inspired by the classic 80s synth and alt bands like Depeche Mode and The Cure, also taking from more current acts like Lauv, The Neighbourhood, and The Weeknd. The duo is made up of Amory and Sam, Amory taking on the singing, writing, and guitar while the latter works heavily with the writing, producing, and instrumentalist side of things. “Perfect Lie” is TONICA’s third single; with it, they aim to attract new listeners with their creatively stunning sound. - Review: "Rather Be Lonely" - PHNTMS
We’re in this new age of technology, letting new devices and social media platforms rule our time and attract our attention. We’re pressed to our phones, not even daring to go a day without them, and we’re losing valuable human connection because of it. Now we can say that we’re gaining friends, people, and connections when pressing our eyes to our phone screens but are we? This new track by PHNTMS titled “Rather Be Lonely” addresses the idea that people nowadays would instead make connections through our social media platforms than embrace everything we love in the real world. There’s something utterly satisfying about connecting with others face-to-face, enjoying their presence, and ignoring this constant urge to be tuned in to everything happening in the world. However, in “Rather Be Lonely” PHNTMS mentions the way people choose to ignore that satisfaction by singing, “Are you searching for that thing you never find?”. They show how people would rather sacrifice their human connection for a day on the internet, not understanding that what they’re looking for isn’t on their phones. This song is wrapped up in a pop-rock sound, energetically pushing this opinion into the world and shedding light on this realization that society likes to ignore. PHNTMS is a Philadelphia and Los Angeles-based LGBT+ alternative rock group that desires to enamor people’s minds with funky and captivating tracks. They collaborate to create the perfect ratio of emotion, grit, and unforgettable lyrics to bring in an audience that won’t leave. They like to hone their sound somewhere between arena rock and the classic feeling of 60’s soul singers. While doing that, they’ve managed to create mind-capturing music such as this newest release, “Rather Be Lonely” and the one that preceded it, “Paper Flowers”. Written by Jane Katryn FOLLOW PHNTMS:
- Interview: "red letter" - Rivka Chaim
Your single “red letter” is so unbelievably beautiful, I can’t get enough! What was your inspiration for writing this track? Rivka: Thank you so much! My inspiration was nothing more and nothing less than my own insecurities when it comes to relationships of all kinds. I constantly overthink things and doubt the people around me when they say or act like they care about me. And it isn't anything they're doing wrong, I just let my anxiety get the best of me. When did your love for music and theatre begin? Did you know from then it was something you wanted to pursue? Rivka: I was raised with music, film, and theatre all my life. It was something I constantly experienced in my home with my family. It was everywhere ever since I was born, and I've always known that that was what I wanted to do with my life. I got over the "magic" of movies pretty early on and was very aware that everyone up on the screen was playing pretend, and I was always fascinated by how they did that and knew that was what I wanted to do. Songwriting is actually a very recent addition to my artistic journey, being the hobby I picked up during quarantine like most everyone else. And it soon became another passion of mine. Who would you say are your biggest inspirations when it comes to your writing and music style? Rivka: Anything from old classics to modern music. I was raised on bands such as Led Zeppelin and Queen, and those will always be my personal favorites. But I'm also a proud Gen Z and grew up experiencing all those iconic songs on the radio that everyone my age knows and can sing along to. And even very recent artists such as Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo have been inspirations as well. To see people my age, especially women, be so successful in their artistry is such an incredible thing to witness, and they've become voices of an entire generation. How are you liking studying at the Tisch School at NYU?! Rivka: It is a whirlwind. It's intense, but so rewarding. To be in an environment where I can cultivate my love for performing and keep growing as an artist is an immense privilege, and it's so gratifying to be among peers who not only share the same passions as you, but are also so incredibly supportive. Professors have a hard time controlling us when it comes to clapping and cheering after one of us performs in front of the class, and it's such an incredible feeling to feel that support as well as give it away. Since you’re a musical theatre student, what’s your favorite production you’ve ever been in or role you’ve played? Rivka: I was a part of many incredible productions when I was in high school. That was where I tested my grounds, pushed my limits, and grew as a performer in preparation for college auditions. Some of my favorite shows I did were "The Addams Family" because it was my very first time doing a musical, "The Medium" because it was my very first experience performing opera and was such a great process, and "The Secret Garden" which we unfortunately weren't able to perform due to the pandemic, but it was a student-led production which gave us so much creative freedom. It is also a beautiful show, and it was written by women which is a rare but incredible feat. What can we expect next from you?! Any upcoming projects you can discuss? I’m so excited to hear more from you!! Rivka: Right now I'm in my second year at NYU, so that keeps me pretty busy, as well as doing student films to add to my screen acting experience. But I'm also of course working on new music, so definitely keep an eye out for new songs in the future. Meanwhile, my new EP "Lost&Found" is out now on all platforms. Thank you so much! - Review: "All My Friends Are Getting Married" - Trey Ewald
“All My Friends Are Getting Married” by Trey Ewald explores the deep-rooted fear, uncertainty and anxiety of feeling behind in life and being surprised by it. Everyone’s timeline is different, but feelings of moving at the “right” or “wrong” pace are often dictated by the collective timelines of those in your inner circle. Ewald dives into his anxiety regarding being the last one of his friends to have found his person despite taking the same steps as them, openly struggling with the dichotomy of feeling like he wasted his time on the wrong person but also with the reality that moving at your own pace isn’t a waste at all. The melody is catchy and apt, elevating the themes of the song through its production. This is most evident during the chorus when the backing track, which contains higher notes, drops to a consistent base during the chorus where Ewald fully discloses his unease. In lines such as “I'm just getting over girls that aren't right for me/I don't know why I can't keep up with reality” and “Now I'm chasing after something that's ahead of me,” he candidly addresses two closely related roots of his disquiet–initially the lack of having found the right person, and more deeply the realization that he’s at a different stage in life than his friends and wants to be where they are but isn’t ready yet. He then dives deeper, showing that this juxtaposition between where he is and where he thinks he should be–especially considering that he tried, just with the wrong person–is affecting him greatly in the line “Making me think I'm broken/And I'm starting to think it might be true/Now I'm losing my focus/'Cause I gave everything I had to you.” Though the subject matter is somewhat heavy, Ewald lightens the mood with a clean, dancy production, encouraging listeners to find humor and fun in their situations. “All My Friends Are Getting Married” is intelligently written and relevantly produced as it wholly discloses genuine fears that many people today struggle with. Trey Ewald is a Los Angeles based singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer. Although he’s participated in numerous bands and projects over the years, Ewald relaunched his solo project after discovering like-minded collaborators to hone a new sound that draws from more wide-ranging influences than any of his previous endeavors. The combination of his polished-pop mastery and lyrics taken straight from his self-aware, humorous notes app is reflected in his newest single “All My Friends Are Getting Married.” This single exemplifies the sound he considers to be the most “him” as it incorporates an extremely wide variety of musical influences while demonstrating the potential of his future trajectory. They sing, “Can we just listen to Holocene/and shut out all the noise that’s been keeping us down lately?/Cause lately it’s been too much”. It’s a lyric that holds the entire song’s meaning, telling us how they want to stop with the chaos—not focus on the big picture and realize that they have the time now to enjoy what they have.
