"I deserve to be well," David Wimbish sang on "Medication," the lead single of The Collection's forthcoming album, Little Deaths. While the band continued to point towards a ray of hope, their return was notably softer in its vulnerability than their previous record. The group's 2023 EP, How to Survive an Ending, saw them embrace bright and colorful indie-pop to find new beginnings in a post-pandemic world. "I'm redefining what is good," they asserted triumphantly on "Rose Colored Glasses." With their upcoming record, however, these powerful forces — joy, growth, hope, and loss — escape clear definition. "The Weather," their latest single, is their most complex recognition of internal experience. The Collection reground themselves in their folk beginnings, layering lush layers of Wimbish's vocals overtop fingerpicked acoustic guitar. With a gorgeous chorus bedded in horns, sparkling keys, and thumping drums, "The Weather" is as sonically stunning as it is lyrically rich. Over ten years into their careers, The Collection have come to champion Aristotle's famous quote, "the more you know, the more you realize you don't know." The song begins "You'd better learn to grovel, get down on your knees." Jai is putting her lover on notice and letting them know that her forgiveness won't come easy. This song represents a wronged lover who is now faced with the chance to make the accused pay for what they've done as they seek possible reconciliation. The person in question is on trial, in the hot seat, but with pointers. "I want you to grovel." Jai repeats as she details the full gravity of the situation, even plainly stating "You messed up." When discussing the idea behind the song, Jai has stated "After the success of "Morally Grey" I realised my audience was hungry for more music influenced by fictional characters, I love when I read scenes in romance books where men grovel so I just knew I had to write a song about it." Jai combined her own personal love of literature and gauged it with her audience's reaction to it and crafted this anthem for us. "Tell me how you're about to change." Jai dares them to try their played-out lines on her now that she appears to be fed-up with their version of "love". You find yourself singing along and feeling empowered, thinking about your own trials and tribulations in rocky relationships as you deep dive into Jai’s newest single. Her soulful voice adds to the overall powerful feeling of the song. “Breaking News: More Promises. New and improved, well I’ve heard all of your shit.” Jai sings about her lover and details how this isn’t the first mishaps that they’ve had her deal with. The “heard it all before” phase has been reached in this relationship and Jai is establishing boundaries and letting them know that they’ll be leaving if they don’t get their act together. “Suck it up and say it to my face”, Jai has some advice for her lover as she navigates through her thought process surrounding this situation. She continues “I want all the tears streaming down your pretty face, telling me I’m someone that you can’t replace.” Her lover has the full blueprint for what to do to win her affections once again, but, ultimately, will it be enough? We don’t exactly get an answer to that question as the song ends with Jai still coaching them on not only learning to grovel, but, how, exactly, to do so. However, they do, seemingly, have all the tools for success. Based upon Jai’s stance throughout the song, however, in the end it’s completely up to her whether she chooses to forgive them or not and it's not looking too good for them. We never really know how good we have it until the time’s behind us. In SAINT PHNX’s latest release “Good Old Times”, the Scottish alt-pop duo combines their magnetic instrumentals with reminiscent songwriting to create a vast soundscape through their musical stylings. Lingering on nostalgia, this track is about looking back at your past and searching for those good old times. Wanting to reach back, trying to, but eventually acknowledging that you’re here in the now and that those moments are far behind you. It’s a bittersweet thing to realize, but “Good Old Times” colors those times brightly, by finding that you can create more of those happy moments in the present. “Good Old Times” is, in a word, big. There’s something about the soundscape, with its humming strings and deep, pulsing percussion, that makes listening to it feel similar to standing on a cliff’s edge, wind in your hair. It’s vivid nostalgia and reminiscence, especially through the beat drops; additionally, the quieter, in-between moments in their mellowness emphasize how high those beat drops feel. In a way, they're a bit like cresting over the top of a rollercoaster; that adrenaline is synthesized into SAINT PHNX’s instrumentals in the best way possible. The songwriting, too, entwines that motion with melancholy tinted with hope. “Good Old Times” is all about looking back at what you once had, and searching for them once more in your life, always trying to retrace your steps, but missing the pathway. I love how the song begins with that painful nostalgia and realization that you can never get those days back, but finally seeing that we can create new “good old times”. The line “I see them in your eyes / They’re not so hard to find” is such a poignant lyric, the idea of finding those moments in another person, along with them being easy to discover with and in them. “Good Old Times”, with its awesome instrumentals and songwriting, is both a love letter and goodbye to those times that are far behind us now, and it’s fantastic to see that grow and evolve as the track runs on through its lyrics. Late Bloomer is a new indie pop single released by EMME. The hook is incredibly catchy, and the beat of the song gives you the feeling to clap and sing along. Late Bloomer talks about the universal feeling that you are at the heels of life because others around you are hitting milestones you haven’t hit yet. Cold Hearted is the latest single from pop singer-songwriter, QUIETLOVE. His first release of 2024 after a slew of drops in 2023, Cold Hearted tells the story of QUIETLOVE falling for someone who started off as a rebound and eventually, ended up breaking his heart. The short, but sweet first verse sees him exclaiming "Love me in a crisis/Play me like a psychic/Used to be my side chick." It's clear that even though the singer once used this person as a remedy for his pain, they are now the cause of it. The second verse then elaborates when he admits that "loving [this person] is violent." The chorus is an absolute earworm and got stuck in my head after just a few listens. I can see crowds putting their lighters in the sky and chanting the relatable line "Can I be honest?/It's kinda cold hearted." QUIETLOVE starts off Cold Hearted with some sound effects of a woman crying and a car engine starting up. As the first verse begins, the singer introduces us to his soothing voice with a quiet drum loop in the back. Though it starts off relaxing, it livens up rapidly when the chorus comes in. The drums, which were seconds earlier just a background piece, slap you in the face as they get louder and take over the song. QUIETLOVE turns from regretful to raging as he puts a bigger emphasis on his words here. The guitar in the background was just the cherry on top of a pop chorus that's sure to be glued in listeners' minds for weeks. I was reminded of Lauv's I Like Me Better and Justin Timberlake's Selfish .
